Why did we accept that security cameras need monthly fees to work properly?
It's more profitable to sell these cameras, so they got more marketing, so people think "oh, I'll just go buy a Nest camera" but you are so much better off buying a system with local storage NVR. If you need to run a wire for power, you might as well run a CAT6 cable. If you use an internet camera system: 1. Giving up privacy, because almost none of these systems encrypt data. 2. Using a lot of your internet bandwidth. (I only recently got internet speeds fast enough to even entertain this idea) 3. You're getting lower video quality because the video needs to be compressed enough to upload to the internet. 4. You're paying more money. 5. You're vulnerable to internet disconnection attacks. (many burglars cut phone lines, etc.) (on the flipside if they break in, they can steal the NVR) but you can have an NVR that uploads a backup, or have a secondary storage device hidden.

My nest thermostat paid for itself over about a year ago. We hadn’t adjusted the programming of our Honeywell in five or six years so we were missing out on seasonal and just in time adjustments to our bill based on usage and outside condutions

What's are home office purchases you've made that have more than paid for themselves?
Ice maker, Yeti lunchbox, cast iron cookware, ceiling fans, dual-fuel generator, solar panels. Super firm Otis futon mattress (on a Room & Roard steel frame with no box spring) has saved my husbands’ back. Got a Nest thermostat for free from our gas company back in 2018. Its energy save mode is super helpful.

Smoke alarm LISTENER that's BIFL
If you have any nest cameras, there used to be a feature that would alert you if any smoke alarm went off and the microphone could detect the sound. Not sure if this is still the case, but if you want to stay in the ecosystem, this would be a way to do it with normal smoke alarms.

What smart home automations have actually made your life easier?
No, it looks like as long as you have a Nest thermostat, you can access settings and connect your phone to it under Home/Away Assist. You just need to have location services on your phone active so the thermostat knows when to switch to Eco.

Depends on your definition of BIFL. I've been using the same Philips Hue bridge for almost ten years and feel like I've gotten a reasonable lifetime's worth of usage out of it. I also have a fleet of various Google Home / Nest devices and all are still working, regardless of the generation or model. Same with my Nest / Dropcam cameras. That said, I bought a new washing machine a few years ago that has a mobile app for remote controlling it, which is completely useless to me and I've never installed it or connected the washer to my wifi. I'd also avoid any other connected appliance because, literally, no good can come from that.

Watch the black Friday, etc deals. The more expensive ones have "learning" capabilities, but it doesn't sound like you would utilize those features. If you link the nest thermostat to the Google home app, it disables those features anyway. I got a pretty basic model from lowes around black Friday for around $80 Like 3-4 years ago. (I keep forgetting that the economy is wild and I'm getting older)

It depends on your preference. I have quite a few smart home devices and one of the biggest issues I’ve faced is pairing. My internet (Spectrum) is pretty awful so I sometimes have to re-pair my smart devices with a hub, echo device or an app. That is the only downside side though. Nothing has broken down, everything works the way it’s supposed to. Except echo devices, they are absolute trash. For context I have the following smart home devices: - Roborock robot vaccuum & mop - Phillips hue smart bulbs - Yoolax blinds - Leviton motion sensors for lights & fan - Treatlife smart switches (So everything can be switched on or off remotely) - Nest thermostat You don’t need any of these things but they sure do save us a lot of time and energy (both physical and electric).

The one I have is Nest Protect as well. It warns you if it detects smoke, and you can tell it not to make noise because you're just cooking. It also tests itself regularly and warns you before it does that.

I've had my Nest thermostats for years and they're worth it. I like controlling them from my phone or Echo. I do not have a lot of smart lights or anything like that. I wanted that when I was younger, but with so many people in my house these days, I think they would be frustrating. One interesting thing I have: my special needs daughter likes to fill the bathtub and flood the bathroom above our kitchen. When we remodeled that bathroom I had two ball valves installed on the bathtub/shower, that I wired to a timer above the light switch (I finished it at 11 pm the night before the workers were coming to finish up - using AI to help me figure out the wiring). She figured out the timer, so I swapped it for a smart switch that's covered up but is controlled by Alexa because she's non-verbal. So, now the kids ask Alexa to turn on the bath - but that's a lot better than her flooding the bathroom or removing the knob and the kids always hunting for the knob (and forgetting to take it back off).
