What are the up-and-coming companies known for quality goods?
I've heard a lot of negative press since Whites was sold to LaCrosse footwear. Which itself was bought by ABC-Mart out of Japan. Granted from what I understand they're still high quality. But not necessarily as reliable as they used to be. That ended up being the deciding factor in me buying my Nick's which are phenomenal.

Frank’s boots , white’s boots and Nick’s boots all make fantastic boots but expect to pay for it they are pricey and most are made to order so they take some time keep an eye out for Black Friday deals I believe Nicks has a 10% off on some models now. I went through this exact same struggle for years. High instep plus wide forefoot is brutal for finding anything that fits right. After trying everything from Allen Edmonds to custom orthotics, I finally bit the bullet and got fitted through IAMBIC's app - they do custom dress shoes based on 3D foot scans. Complete difference from anything off the shelf. For sneakers though, New Balance 990v5 in wide has been solid, and for boots check out Nicks or White's - they do custom lasts if you need it. The break-in period is rough but once they're broken in they last forever.

Buy fill grain leather. Buy a belt from a hand made boot maker like these: Whites Viberg JK Boots Wesco Nicks Or buy a belt from a raw selvedge denim shop like Blue Owl, Standard & Strange, Self Edge, Blue In Green, 3 Sixteen, Iron Heart America, Division Road, etc. even Gustin makes good ones that will last forever. Any menswear place that specializes in heritage workwear will sell you a belt that is bulletproof. Could also get a good one from dress shoe stores like Alden or Allen Edmonds.

If you want a pair of boots that are built for life, it’s tough to look much further that the Pacific Northwest boot-makers. Nick’s, White’s, Frank’s, and JK all make some seriously tough boots that will last for decades with proper care. But they are also not cheap. So you get what you pay for. If PNW boots are too pricey for you, consider Red Wing or Jim Green. Both are well made. I think of Jim Green as PNW light. The leathers aren’t the same but still well made for a fair price, and many are double lasted. And a lot of first responders seem to like Redbacks if you’re okay with a slip on Chelsea style. I didn’t think I would ever like a Chelsea boot. But I now own 3 pairs because they’re just so comfortable. Waterproof can be a quirky thing. Most waterproof boots have a waterproof liner. Those make your feet sweat and stink. And once you get a hole in them, and you eventually will, all waterproofing is out the window. In fact it’s worse because any water that gets in at that point is trapped and makes a nice swamp in your boot. I would rather have a double lasted boot, leather outside and leather lined. And treated with a good waterproof conditioner like Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP or Huberd’s Shoe Grease.

Redwings are great, especially the heritage stuff imo, definitely a jumping off point as far as boots go though lol, Red wings are good, a pair of Nicks are levels beyond, but I think once you are into that real deal tier like nicks, most people aren’t going to use it hard enough to make it work right.

Stuff you will continue buying for life
Red Wing Heritage line, sadly their work line has gone far downhill. I wore 2216s for years and my most recent pair had the heel cup separate after a rather short time. They wouldn't do anything about it and it couldn't be repaired. Thorogoods weren't any better - their steel toe plastic support cracked after just over a year and caved into the boot. Check out my post history for both of these. Now onto Jim Greens. Options for lighter weight safety toe BIFL boots are slim. The PNW bootmakers (Nicks, Whites, JK) are all very good but far too heavy duty, hot, and overkill in design for indoor work on cement.

Buying a resolable and rebuildable boot is the way to make them BIFL-ish. I’m partial to handmade PNW boots, specifically Nicks (because they make women’s boots just as well as mens and offer our sizes on almost all of their builds). They’re expensive and I’m glad I saved up for my pair.

Actually, I would agree that the out of box comfort of the Danners was pretty good. But 14 hour work days mostly six days a week was challenging, especially for the waterproof ones that started to leak after 3 months. Granted, my Nicks are not waterproof, but fairly water resistant with plenty of leather treatment. They do dry out while wearing them, though. Whereas once the waterproof membrane has been breached on the Danners they would hold water until they came off at the end of the day. I’m not knocking them for what you and others like them for. I just needed to level up for my needs.

These boots will last you a few years before a resole is needed, and depending on how tough you are, maybe even 7-10 years before a rebuild is necessary. If it's light work, these boots are absolute tanks and will outlast any boot on the market. They make redwings look and feel like child play boots

Winter boots that actually fit me. I’m a 6.5EE by brannoch standards and have usually had to size up to get department store shoes to fit me width wise. Then had to stuff extra gloves/socks in to keep ankle rub away or use athletic tape. Got made to order boots from nicks for the last winter. No regrets.

I would say you need good arch and ankle support, and you want to wrap your feet in leather instead of synthetics. Also, for your knees and back you want something supportive. Also that taken into account, I think you want a pair of Nicks boots, with a honey Vibram (or if you really must, a blown rubber wedge) sole. Get at least the 6” height. These will require some break-in, but after that, you will be golden.

Geologist here, I mostly work from a home office now, but I did several years of field work in the deserts in the middle east and during the dry season in India, a year in New Mexico, years here and there. My advice is to get something with good ankle support. You very easily can roll an ankle if you go light duty. I had a friend that I was surveying some of the North Anatolian Fault with roll and ankle so bad that she broke 3 bones. I had to carry her out, 3 surgeries and over a decade later and she still has a limp. She was wearing trail runners, and had until that incident, made fun of my heavier boots. If you are in dolomite, you want something heavy duty. Leather and over the ankle saves your ankles and your skin. I used to buy the all leather Danner mountain pass boots, but they have gone a bit down hill in quality control (you might get a decent pair, but you also might not). I had some all leather Lowas, but they stopped making their heavier leather. Unfortunately, the majority of the hiking boot world has gone to styles that you will shred in short order. What I have and am satisfied with are a pair of Limmer Lightweights (not the customs) for when I am covering a lot of ground and not carrying a ton of weight and a pair of Nicks Ridgelines for when I am carrying a lot of weight and covering less ground. These are both high end boots, but are bullet proof. I have owned the Limmers for over a decade and they have been resoled a few times. If you can swing a pair, I would recommend either whole heartily. The Nicks are great too, but they are really a more specialized boot and unless you are carrying 75+ pounds of geophysical equipment, really unnecessary. Oh, your feet are going to sweat, a lot. You will be wearing boots to protect your feet and that protection unfortunately comes at the cost of breathability. Do yourself a favor and get in the habit of bringing a spare set of socks or two with you on field work and change them when you stop for lunch or other convenient rests.

Not a woman but I bought my wife a pair of boots from Nicks. They are expensive and they have a break in period, but any boot worth having will require break in. You don’t want the “cloud” feeling. Your foot needs a firm surface that molds to your foot to provide support and also has enough space to flex naturally. The PNW brands like Nicks, Franks, and whites are top of the line. It’s an investment for sure

I'm fairly surprised no one has mentioned PNW style boots like jk boot or nicks. They're expensive and require a pretty substantial break in (2-3 weeks walking 10k steps a day or more), but once they're broken in they're going to be the most comfortable boot you'll ever wear. I work in Healthcare and walk 9-12 miles a day over 13 hour shifts, and I won't go back to anything else now. Shrunken bison options require a lot less break in to be comfortable. My jk boot Christy soled OTs were comfortable for me day 1, and by week 2, they felt like an extension of my foot. Durable, comfortable, and rebuildable and resolable. But, as I mentioned, the price is eye watering. I spent 650$ and waited 3 months for my boots. And they require break-in. There's no free lunch with quality boots I'm afraid.

I own both. Nicks are excellent work boots for those that are doing labor. You get Vibergs when you make your way up to being a foreman or project manager and are both in the office and in the field. Both are excellent quality, but the Vibergs are of a finer quality of leather and more graceful design that won't take the abuse that Nicks boots will thrive in.

Hiking shoes - all my footwear gets a worn out heel from the inside and I am desperate to find something that lasts.
This is quite simple: hiking shoes/boots with fabric lining on the inside have this for waterproofing. However, the location in the boot that gets most wear is the heel counter. You may want to look for hiking boots that have a leather heel counter. Nicks has recently broadened its gamma with some very interesting hiking boots, that are almost BIFL, at least re-soleable / re-buildable multiple times.

Never in their wildest dreams…. Until you do. Then give it five years and tell me how many pairs you have in your closet. If you don’t know, you just don’t know. I used to only be able to afford a couple hundred for boots. But I grew so sick of spending 2-400 a year on boots that would disintegrate, or destroy my feet. I get all my pnw boots off eBay. I had severe plantar fasciitis and got a pair of nicks builder pros, and it was an absolute game changer. My feet have NEVER been healthier. Then I got another pair of nicks, then a pair of whites, then a pair of wesco. The whites and nicks I never spent more than $450 on eBay. All practically brand new. The Wesco boots are engineers, and I cringed when I bought them but I had to have them. $875😂 when you know you know.

There are a few boot manufacturers in Spokane, Washington... Nicks, JK, White's. All top notch, handmade, custom fitted. I want to take a motorcycle ride up there and have some made.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
PNW boots have stayed high quality and the options for them have increased a lot. Nicks, White’s, Frank’s, Wesco.

I have a Nicks and a Hanks and one other hand made. The nicks I have worn daily all year and it looks new. I’ve lost weight and need new holes but it’s just a great belt. I will probably buy a smaller one. They really make amazing stuff. All my other belts seem to just wear out and maybe it’s just less leather or the quality of the leather. Something is definitely different.
