  What are the best BIFL quality products that are being made today?

  seconding le creuset cast iron. also SEBO vacuums, ecm espresso machines (though most italian esp. machines are similar quality), bradley mountain wallets, peak design bags. not sure about true BIFL status due to the inclusion of software, but my nikon DSLRs have held up very well over the years

  What’s something you’ve bought once and never had to replace?

  Merrell hiking boots, my LL bean parka is going on 25 years and my pullover fleeces 30 years, mid 90s cuisinart food processor, my mom’s Nikon D2020 film camera. Even from my first job I really tried to invest in quality.

  10 hours of “research” just to buy one product… this is the real problem in e-commerce.

  I spent a year before deciding to buy my Nikon Zf. I'm really patient and enjoy just buying something that fits my needs.

  Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  There are no forever digital cameras but there are forever lenses. Check out Nikon lens line up - they will last decades and outlive several generations of cameras. Some of them will sell 10 years later for same price you bought them new.

  A few things I would suggest looking for. I'm not especially into cameras, but I do use a lot of older tech: * Make sure third party batteries are available * Make sure third party lenses are available * Bonus points for lens mounts that have been around a relatively long time like Sony E (2011), Micro 4/3 (2008), Fujifilm X (2012) Canon RF and Nikon Z should also be great options

  Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  Digital cameras last a long time, probably bifl if you treat them well. I have had a couple die from abuse but never just normal wear. I really like the Sony point and shoots, but most Nikon and Canon are going to be nice and in budget. Assuming you want a moderate zoom, Canon powershot, Nikon coolpix, Sony alpha 6100, or old/new old stock point and shoot are all solid options. Most will take better raw images than a phone, newer ones will be more competitive with processing the image data into better looking shots.

  Nikon, Paul Stuart, American Giant, Look, Shimano, All-clad, and Mauviel are brands I always trust as compared to anything else with which each brand competes (yes, I know they overlap with one another).

  A list of BIFL not made in the USA

  I can only comment on things made in Japan, but here goes: Mac Knives - Very good quality yet reasonably-priced (if price is no object, then there is an endless supply of other makers, including famous ones like Misono as well as small-volume shops that only sell locally) Makita - Power tools Miyazaki Seisakusho - Their "Geo" line of stainless steel pots and pans is very high quality, similar to All Clad Mont-bell - Outdoor gear and clothing Zojirushi - Rice cookers, hot water dispensors, insulated bottles, etc. And of course, Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. all make great quality camera gear (though they all make cheap stuff too). Stationery isn't exactly BIFL, but Japan is known to have high-quality pens, pencils, paper, etc. Similarly, towels don't last a lifetime, but Imabari towels are really high quality. There's even a Towel Museum in Imabari.

  What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?

  Nikon D7000. Only because that's the only thing i have owned for long. Now my mentality is bug once cry once. Bought a Vitamix ascent 3500. Planning to buy a Bosch 800 dishwasher and a long lasting Couch (not sure of the brand yet). We'll see.

  They're special and awesome in capturing important events. It's good to create memories with Nikon.

  I've still got a D70, D80 and D300 - inherited from my father as well. I wish I had as much time for photography these days, but my priorities are elsewhere. I've got an array of lenses, speed lights, filters, etc and they're just taking up space at the moment. Solid gear that I really appreciate; perhaps I'll be able to devote some more time to the hobby this year.

  Old Nikons are beasts. My D600, bought in 2013 and heavily used, needed servicing after a bad fall from my backpack onto solid rock - not a problem on the outside, but the mechanism inside got jumbled up. Had to substitute it rather than repair, but kept it just in case. Bought a D750. This was 2017. Last year I had them both repaired at an official Nikon repair centre in Rome. For less than €1k I now have two brand new Nikon DSLRs, 11 years and 7 years into owning them and using both professionally. Absolute tanks, and they’re not even pro models. I since switched to Fuji as I am not shooting professionally anymore - although I keep my Nikon gear stored and ready for anything. They’re just too good. One day I might buy a D3X (them colours are real) or a D4, just because they’re stupid cheap and I’ve wanted a flagship since I was a teenager lol

  I inherited this NikonD50 from 2006 from my dad as a kid and still use it over a decade later

  I picked one up along with two kit lenses, and a camera bag for just over $100 back in early 2023. Despite its limitations by today’s standards, it’s cheap and reliable, and good to learn the basics on. It can still make nice images. I have since gotten a D7000, and some nicer lenses, and don’t feel like I’m missing out with anything newer or with higher specs.
