Looking for a winter coat
Canadian checking in here - I'm from rural Ontario and hubby grew up in Winnipeg. Both of our go-tos have long been Columbia. They have various warmth configurations, but I am partial to any of their "omni-heat" line. My current jacket is from that line and I have never had a lighter, thinner or warmer jacket. Outside of their brand, a lot of people in our circle rely on Eddie Bauer or North Face. Stay away from Canada Goose. There are better down jackets made by more ethical companies that will stand up just as well at a reasonable price point.

I have Patagonia Black Hole Wheelies and North Face rollers that have taken a beating for my checked bags and are still holding strong. They are meant to handle a lot of rough handling. I just use compressible packing cubes and throw them in there. I also had 2 Tumis that lasted a long time, but literally every zipper pull on both bags eventually got sheared off, so I gave up on them.

Best winter jackets that are worth the price
This is where it's at. A lot of people don't pay attention to the fill power. Couple years back I swapped out my cheap stuff for high quality used gear that's all 700+ fill. Layering it along with good shells has been an absolute game changer. I'm in love with North Face Summit Series stuff. Warmth without bulk. Stuff can be insane retail but there's a ton on the used market.

Cabin bag that last for years
I have two of the XL version of that North Face Base Camp bag and those things are indestructible. I use them for camping, including driving with them on the roof of the truck in all kinds of weather (rain, snow, etc). I also use them as checked bags every year when I go to Japan. Both bags still look completely new. I love them.

Everyone will tell you Canada Goose, and they are correct, but any high quality down filled parka will be the same. Woolrich. North Face. Fjallraven. Rab. Jack Wolfskin. Patagonia Many many others. Canada Goose and Woolrich will set you back big bucks...well North of 1k. The others will be slightly less, but still pricey.

I am also partial to Big Agnes, but my current car camp tent is a North Face, and it is built very well. Go to REI and have a look at their various offerings. Nemo, MSR, Big Agnes, the REI brands (half dome series of tents have a great reputation for value) Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, etc... all have great products.

Of course there are good tents. They aren't sold at WalMart and will cost more than $100, but there are tons of options out there. I'm still using some I bought in the 1990s or early 2000s, including Marmot, North Face, REI, Kelty, and Eureka. (We own a lot of tents, from a 1-person bivy to a 12x16 cabin tent.) If you're just a casual camper you could do worse than stopping by REI and asking for help there. Or if you're camping from a vehicle and want comfort, look at [WhiteDuck ](https://whiteduckoutdoors.com/collections/wall-tents)or similar. I've used those elk hunting and for work sites in Alaska, they will last a lifetime for family tenting.

Yes there are good tents. REI co-op branded tents would be a good place to start - quality tents with good warranties ranging from beginner level to ultralight. Any other brand sold at REI will also be good quality though probably more expensive. You might also look at Kelty - they tend to be on the less expensive/ entry level end of the market, with heavier but more robust tents. Big Agnes, North Face, Marmot, MSR, Nemo, Eureka! To name some of the higher end brands. Even the baseline products here will be MUCH lighter than what you can get at a big box store, but get very expensive as you add features and reduce weight. There are a ton of boutique companies out there that mostly cater to the ultralight market but it sounds like that’s not what you’re after.

Duffle Bag Recommendation
Does it need to be waterproof? If it does not, then I recommend the Roadtripper from REI. If you need some water resistance than The North Face Base Camp has held up very well for me. I got a yellow one that is about 10 years old that is still going strong.

Men's rain jacket that's actually waterproof
Any name brand outdoor gear will be BIFL _if maintained properly_. Even the best North Face or Helly Hansen professional quality jacket will fall apart if it's worn for years, heavily abused and never washed, repaired or maintained.

Men's rain jacket that's actually waterproof
If it doesn’t work, there’s a spray on applicator that you can use and then throw in the dryer. I think you apply it after a wash when it’s still wet, then toss in dryer but forgot. I bought a three in one jacket from north face and they sent me a bottle of the stuff since I was a newbie and tried to warranty it lol Everyone should try that approach before throwing away something that claims to be waterproof/water resistant.

A good winter coat if youre in a climate with cold winters. I bought my North Face coat at 18 and had it until I was 31. It was still in good shape, but I lost a bunch of weight and needed a smaller size.

Good backpack (like Jansport or North Face), a solid stainless steel water bottle (like Hydro Flask), and a decent chef’s knife were my best long-term buys. Still use them years later and they’ve held up great.

Ahah well that’s why I posted here - to sense check my expectations . My previous jacket was a north face and lasted me 10 years - wasnt the GoreTex, so wasn’t waterproof anymore by the end.

In the advice of my brother, I bought a navy blue North Face bag in 1980 when I was 10. By the time I was a raging goth in 1986, I was hating that blue bag so much but refused to get rid of it because it was still in great condition. (Dye would have fixed it but tts only option back then was RIT for natural fibers.) It kept going until I was in college and I was begging it to fail in some way. In 1994, I finally just stopped using a back pack and donated it. I hope it’s still out there making some goth unhappy with a blue backpack.

Duffel bag go with Patagonia black hole or north face base camp. I got a used north face base camp I got cheap on eBay. Patagonia seems like it will last forever and the new color schemes are much subtler than thanks ones. I have a small rei roadtripper and love it. Both my road tripper and Patagonia black hole pack up in to a small cube.

Looking for a warm jacket
I swear by my North Face, but really, any jacket with down feathers is going to be warmest, and anything with a slick exterior is going to cut the wind the best (however, the NF I have right now is a cloth exterior and still does an absolutely phenomenal job at keeping me warm). Lived in NE Ohio for 10 years, couldn't have gotten through without down jackets.
