  I don't know if they are still making them but the Olympus Tough series of cameras was great. They worked under water, frozen, dropped. And they took great pictures.

  What’s something you’ve had so long it feels like it’s legally part of your family

  I’ve got a beautiful old Olympus OM1 with a motor drive! Long story short, my father “bought” it in his youth while on a work trip by bartering some work equipment which got “stolen” in transport xD, then illegally smuggled it into the country, which is a huge deal back in the communist days as you couldn’t buy anything non-Soviet practically. It still sees regular use for all family photos and has become a meme. Plus it’s pretty versatile and can still trigger brand new flash guns and such (albeit in full manual mode).

  Digital Camera - any forever cameras?

  A digital camera will ultimately age out, just on software alone. The best you might be looking for is a solid ruggedized digital camera, and for that I'd point you toward the Olympus Tough series. I have a TG-4 from that line that still works perfectly, though it uses a proprietary data connection cable that I know I will eventually not be able to find for sale should I need it.
