  I know I'll get some hate for this, but I just wore On Clouds on a trip to Italy and was very impressed. Despite walking around 20,000-30,000 steps per day on cobblestones I had no blisters, no foot pain, and felt like I could keep walking as much as needed without any issues. This was in stark contrast to many similar trips when I wore different shoes and always experienced many issues. They aren't BIFL but definitely the most comfort I've ever ever felt on a trip.

  What Are the Best Travel Shoes That Are Actually Worth It?

  I really don't think there can be a single answer to this question, but I'll tell you what I do, with roughly a two shoe rotation depending on the travel. If I am not going to be walking or hiking on unpaved surfaces, I'll generally take a pair of "walking" running shoes. That is, something that's fairly sturdy and well-cushioned, and *not* meant for running fast. Currently, that's a pair of On CloudEclipse and was On CloudMonsters before this. On makes reasonably "fashionable" sneakers that you can get away with wearing in restaurants, tourist attractions, etc, and the ones that are not aimed at running fast are reasonably durable (will last a year or so). If I'm traveling in summer and need a sneaker that's really airy, I keep a pair of black Altra Escalante Racers (fully mesh, almost, and collapsible) for that purpose. For trips where I need shoes that will work for hiking, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my La Sportiva TX4 approach shoes. In fact, just like someone else suggested Lems, I highly recommend considering approach shoes as a semi-BIFL walking shoe option, and if you pick a suede/leather option, they're frequently not too bad looking. Super-comfortable, highly durable, waterproof options, and good for street & trail. Just not cushioned like a traditional sneaker. If you need something that's more "business casual", consider something like Mephisto, Allen Edmonds, Danner, etc. None of any of this is BIFL but you should have many options for shoes that both look good and are well-suited to your travel needs. Fwiw, nothing I am suggesting is so expensive as to be considered an "investment", either (like a handmade boot or sneaker would be), so just pick a general category you like, then a style you're aiming for, and narrow down the brands that sell something along those lines.

  Hey there. I have a similar build, and I'm a teacher. I'm on my feet all day too. All feet are different, but I use On Cloud shoes. I find those work best for my feet.

  Best walking shoes for men: which ones do you recommend?

  Yep, simple and not pricey. I went to a store that specializes in walkable city shoes and they recommended it over On shoes for my 3 week tour of Europe where I was walking 10 miles a day, and my feet never got tired.

  What's everyone's go-to sneaker?

  They aren't bifl - no sneaker ever will be - but I really like my on clouds! They're excellent for trail running & hiking/walking with my kiddos. My husband loves his brooks ghost sneakers. He gets a new pair annually bc he runs ~3mi/day on average so they get a LOT of miles.

  If for fashion and comfort, Hoka or Made in USA/UK New Balances are built well, and the Hoka's in particular are extremely comfortable. ON's are also very comfortable, but I've not worn mine enough to test its lifespan, and they only have a few good looking models. However the more 'comfortable' a shoe is, the more softer and therefore quicker wearing the materials are likely to be. So they won't be a 'BIFL' in that respect. You can get sneaker shoes with higher end materials and build, like with Visvim, but I think that's for a totally different category of buyer. There's also a company called Neutra that are sneakers handmade in France.

  They’re expensive, but I love my On sneakers. They are incredibly comfortable and have proven to be very durable - my last pair lasted nearly 2 years with daily use!

  Name your top 5 BIFL items

  +1 for Darn Tough. For work, I walk around 8k-10k steps daily in trainers, and only had one pair had a hole. Warranty claim isn’t an issue. Going on 5+ years so far. However I do trim my toe nails often, wash them by putting them in a laundry bag, And very low dryer heat cycle. I think people should be using laundry bags more, since I feel and experience that my clothes last much longer. Separate bags for shirts, underwear, socks, etc. and don’t put way too much in each bag. About a week worths is good for my usage. In addition, I found that I was wearing improper fitting shoes and switched to wide feet sizing shoes. Went from Nike and Adidas, to New Balance wide/x-wide, Hoka, On Cloudtilt

  Best alternative to the Brooks Ghost 13?

  My coworker loves his On Clouds. I love my Brooks Ghost 16s, sorry you aren't having the same experience. I've had to warranty my Hoka Transport's twice after 2 months of wear due to the tread separating from the shoe. Which is sad since it looks like they just glue the tread on. So ymmv but I won't be buying Hoka's after 2 pair have had the same issue after a short period of time.

  Wide sneakers suggestions

  Funny you say last a long time. The soles on the 2 pairs of Cliftons I’ve owned, 8 & 9, both wore out after less than 6 mos. Will never buy hoka again. Have started buying Ons, they make a couple of shoes in wide, look way better and I prefer the stability to hokas as well. Wish they offered more styles in wide but unfortunately, they do not.

  I love love love my On Cloud 5's (now they're selling On Cloud version 6, which I haven't yet tried). I also have a Asics Gel Nimbus which I quite like, but they’re older and an earlier version. But actually I don’t think any shoes are BIFL!

  New shoes for every day walking and gym?

  Running shoes are not BIFL as shoes need to be replaced every several kilometers due to wear. For comfort, especially for walking, look into Hoka Bondis. I'd trust a chiropodist's opinion too. The one I see recommends shoes from Asics, on, and Hoka.

  Welcome! Yeah, screws in the foot don’t mix well with anything other than sooooffffffft and good support. Good luck! Also, if you do go to a running shoe store (like, actual running shoes, not just a bit of everything), they can let you try several brands. Hoka, On Cloud, Saucony, etc. works great for some folks, not me. Brooks Ghosts. But not Brooks Adrenaline. You get the idea. But yeah, that’s the route I’d go. [Here is and example.   I don‘t think Trainers are bifl in general, but I like my ON Cloudmonsters a lot. Even after almost three years of use, almost daily, they look good. Also those are pretty confortable

  It's ok to have sports sneakers like Hoka, Nike, etc if you're going to walk a lot. Want to be more European? Go Adidas, Puma or On. But if the "average" American tourist wants to go unnoticed in Europe then better also change clothes to European style (buy them there though). To be honest you're going to end up in touristic areas anyway so you'll be noticed anyway. And in those touristic areas just don't give to beggars, don't sign any paper in the street, beware roms, scammers, watch your pockets, etc. Touristic areas are not like the real life areas. And that's also valid for local tourists.

  Yeah I'm in Europe and a lot of people are walking around in On Clouds and Hokas. Depending on where you go you can buy local ones when you get there, I know the Danish and Germans always have some interesting trainer-style shoes, and a lot of Spanish wear Camper
