You can buy Liberty off of Amazon or their website direct and get the original good shit from the original employees. It's more spendy but it's made by the same people in the same place with the same equipment just a new label on it.

We got a /0 set for our wedding. It started rusting in under 15 years. If you really want it for life and are not allergic to nickel, you don't want /0. Do not buy metal stuff you use to eat on Temu, Alibaba, etc. Those sites are known to sell products containing unsafe metals (like lead), and you don't want to be eating off lead utensils. Go with a trusted brand (Oneida, for example) with a good warranty that you like the size and pattern. Utensils do tend to be bigger these days, so pay attention to that if you care about anything.

My Oneida 18/10 is still in daily use, is not marked up , except 1 fork that has bent tines ( and when I find out who….) is 40 years old. Raised kids on this stuff, so it was not babied ever in the least.

This is solid advice, the weight thing is huge. I made the mistake of buying some fancy looking set online without feeling it first and it was way too light and flimsy feeling. Ended up returning it and going with Oneida after testing at the store - night and day difference

I splurged on a set from Oneida and have zero regrets, they've survived tons of washes and still look brand new. I’d say stick to 18/10 stainless steel, it makes a huge difference in durability.

I picked up some of these open stock individual Oneida Solefield forks from Walmart last year to pack in my kids' lunches because I don't want to risk them taking my good matching Lenox flatware that is hard to find these days. I encourage you to hold the flatware to determine if it’s comfortable and well weighted for you. it makes all the difference to use comfortable silverware/flatware. 18/10 Oneida and Lenox are BIFL.

I always buy Oneida. But like others say, it’s important to look at the weight. Check dept stores and their website for sales. Also some of their patterns have been around a long time and you can buy additional pieces when you lose some which always happens.

Cutlery which is lose-proof
I mix and match cutlery and dishes that are classic and easily replaced, Oneida, Reed and Barton for cutlery, fransicanware desert rose, ivy and apple for dishes. I can pick up pieces easily at antique or thrift shops and it looks purposeful.

We use Oneida. They do rotate out their designs every few years but I haven't had too much trouble finding replacements, either direct from them or second-hand through Ebay/Etsy/Amazon. Been using the same set for 20ish years and have definitely lost & replaced several during that time.

Go for quality pieces over sets for sure. No knife set, no cookware set. Here’s my recommendations so far. - Duralex Picardie glasses (timeless, still in production, super durable. - Corelle plates and bowls (they make strange designs, but they also have simple white rounded and squarish plates) Le Cruset maybe if you prefer the style. My grandma handed some down, so they last. -Oneida flatware if there’s a style you like from them. I think they have a lifetime warranty and my parents’ has still lasted my whole life, although I have had a couple table knives rust from the dishwasher. (Haven’t tested their warranty) - All Clad stainless 12in skillet D3 (I got the D5 because of a sale and I liked the brush metal). - All clad or Demeyere 3qt-3.5 range saucepan…something with a lip for easy pouring - Demeyere 10in saucier? (I got this massively on sale and it’s super heavy, but it kinda bridges the gap if I need a smaller skillet like surface, or a larger saucepan surface. The rounded edges make it perfect for, well…sauces lol. - Le Cruset Dutch oven (although, the saucier has a lid and can go in the oven…even fits a sourdough loaf!) - Asahi professional line cutting board. Natural color is cheaper than black. Maybe not quite for life, but it’s the closest thing besides an end grain cutting board which is much more maintenance. They’re beefy. They’re rubber with some wood in it, so avoiding the microplastics and the bacteria growth of other boards. You can fairly easily sand off a micro coating of it and haha a completely new surface as needed. - Get a quality chef knife (or Santoku or something if you prefer), paring knife, and serrated knife, and learn how to sharpen the former 2. (I’m currently learning on the Sharpal double sided sharpener…maybe practice on a cheap knife before your nice BIFL ones though lol.) - Nordicware sheet pans, bread pans, cake pans if you’re into baking. - Pyrex 3 piece measuring cup set (sorry I broke my rule about sets lol) - Kitchenaid stand mixer (if you’re into baking) - Hario V60 Pour Over Coffee Starter Set (the one with the plastic pour over piece) if you’re into coffee Might have other recommendations for rice cooker, coffee stuff, and cooking utensils, but it’s probably not as BIFL. Hope this helps! I know people love cast iron and carbon steel. Go for it if you like, but I really do prefer a stainless steel pan myself.

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
Refrigerators Washers Dryers Manual tools Power tools Before my time, a wood board actual sizes were larger than today. A 2x4 was a actually closer to 2x4. They keep getting smaller despite the name saying they aren't. Corelle Oneida Revere ware They were made in the statrs with lifetime warranties. Then 25 year warranties. Then 2 year. I have no idea if they have one at all anymore. Tge websites have a lot of complaints at the quality differences. Pyrex measuring cups. Now, the measurements eventually fade. They used to be almost baked on. Steel cars. Oh, there were garbage ones. However, they were expected to still be able to work for decades if maintained. Composite board furniture was still heavier duty. Today, it has cardboard backing instead of composite board. Furniture as a whole. I'd still prefer to pay more and buy something that won't be useless quickly. Couches were made to reupholstered instead of scrapped. Today the frames collapse almost as quickly as the cushion gives up the ghost.

What BIFL items would you add to your wedding registry?
Ours included plain white bone china—I did a lot of research and even though it feels more fragile, it’s the toughest stuff you can get. I have two sets of ‘good’ china from grandmothers (their wedding sets) that have to be hand washed due to gold and platinum detailing, so I wanted to invest in our everyday dinnerware. I looked at all of the major places (pottery barn, department stores, etc) and noticed that the stoneware and similar was all chipped in-store, so I didn’t think it would hold up well with daily use. We went with Wedgwood White, which has now been discontinued. I loved the simple lines and that the coffee cups were footed (meaning I don’t have to worry about coasters or saucers every single morning). It is an absolute joy to use something so nice every day! We just throw it all in the dishwasher and every single piece is still pristine. We also selected a stainless flatware pattern and asked for two full sets along with steak knives (Oneida Deauville, it goes beautifully with the Wedgwood White). It feels up to the challenge of a lifetime of use and is also completely dishwasher friendly. There are different tiers of flatware within a brand so definitely try to check it out in person before you register for it! We did Waterford Elegance glassware, which is stunning. We aren’t big drinkers, otherwise I likely would have chosen something dishwasher safe with a shorter stem for more regular use. We do plan to have them for life though! We purchased large drink dispensers for the wedding itself which have ended up being amazing items to have for entertaining. We have 2 Crate & Barrel hatch dispensers for cold beverages (and I’ve been eyeing a third), and 3 vintage coffee urns off of eBay for hot beverages (we use one for tea, one for coffee, and one for hot water). I’ve since pulled these out for baby showers, milestone birthdays, and graduation parties. They also look great in the top glass cabinets in my kitchen! So food for thought if you’re having a custom punch or coffee bar—you could invest in the machines themselves and get a lifetime of use out of them! Congratulations!

Calphalon stainless steel set of pots and pans, set of Cuisinart knives, and Oneida flatware. My grandma bought me a huge set of each 20+ years ago, and everything is still going as strong as it did the day I got it. I know she spent a good chunk of change on them at Macy's as a b-day present for me after I bought my home. I'm 99% certain they will last me until death, haha.

We got Belgique stainless cookware (pots mostly) from Goldsmiths (aka Macy’s) when were got married 29 years ago. Use them daily & they still look and cook great. Also have several cast iron skillets that were my grandmother’s, so they are probably pushing 100 years old. Oneida stainless flatware that was my mom’s and is at LEAST 40yrs old- i remember using it as a kid. My sister & i had the same Oneida pattern so i gave her mine & kept Mom’s. She’s been married 35 years and still uses it every day. (Mom is an active 80-something, but we bought the house when the ‘rents downsized 8 years ago and much of the stuff stayed with the house) 😁😁😁

Farberware stainless steel pots and pans (oven safe to 350°) Kitchaid stand mixer Pyrex pie pan Cheap aluminum cookie sheets from Walmart Henkel Four Star knives Corningware casserole dishes No-name carbon steel wok Oneida 18/10 stainless steel flatware and serving pieces All bought in the early 1980’s, so 40+ years old. Everything goes in the dishwasher, except the wok. I’m careful that the knives don’t touch each other, but that’s it. I also have a well-seasoned cast iron pan, but I never use it because I don’t like the metallic taste.

I bought a house two years ago so there is a theme but.. - good sawhorses. I got whatever the top rated was on amazon iirc. everyone loves them. it makes me more likely to work on house projects because setting them up or taking them down is so easy - vintage silverware. not actual silver, stainless steel. like old oneida. - buy the slightly nicer stud finder. WOW it’s life changing. I did, and I knew it was great until my brother showed me his, same brand, and it was not so great. he went with the budget option. - TBD on how BIFL this is but, stainless steel water fountain for my cats. it doesn’t get slimy like the plastic ones do, and my cats love it. bonus, mine is totally silent until the water starts to get a touch low which helps my ADHD remember to refill it.

I snagged a huge Oneida silverware set at an antique store for $25, complete with the wooden felted box to store them in. It is missing a couple of the serving pieces, but otherwise was fairly complete, just needed a good polishing. I see a lot of silverware pieces in antique stores, sometimes organized in sets, and sometimes thrown in a pile in a drawer. I highly recommend checking out your local antique stores (the ones with stalls rented out to different vendors, not the boutique ones) and focus on the stalls that have a lot of old kitchen tools or glassware/serving plates, bowls, etc.

You are not gonna find an Oneida set for $100 unless you are damn lucky to find someone ignorant selling. I've been expanding our Oneida set over time and currently looking for Oneida Bordeax teaspoons and them janks are like $20 each used. Used Oneida pricing is shocking. And its flatware....unless you are constantly dropping them into the garbage disposal, pretty much all flatware is BIFL.

My wife and I bought Oneida in 2001 and they guaranteed the pattern would exist for life. Of course, what they failed to say was "the life of the company". They don't make them anymore and they're hard to find even on eBay and Replacements. Granted, what we have is of excellent quality, but it pisses me off that finding additional pieces is such a pain. Edit: If anyone wants to get rid of their Oneida "Astrid" pattern, let me know. I need teaspoons and iced tea spoons (the long ones).

Flatware is about how it feels in your hand, the balance, the weight, the thickness, the shapes, the angles. It’s very personal. Basically any 18/10 SS set will be BIFL but if you choose blindly it may well be Hate It For Life. This is shopping that should not be done online. Go and fondle all the cutlery. Balance it on the edge of a bowl—some spoons will flip out, causing a huge mess when the bowl is full of cereal milk or soup. If you’ve got a partner you’ll both need to go, as if you’ve got vastly different sized hands you need to find a comfy fit for you both, or buy a set that has both appetiser and entree forks & knives. Brands that I personally enjoy the feel of: TableKraft, Villeroy and Boch, Oneida.

The trick to flatware is getting high quality. 18/10 only goes so far. You can get 18/10 that bends if you look at it funny. Fine flatware quality is where you want to look. I’ve had Gorham Studio flatware for the past 8 years and they still look new, no bending. My brother has Oneida Moda for the past decade, had a box of it fall off the roof of their car after a picnic, got run over after falling on concrete, and only one of the knives has a VERY slight bend to it. It’s not cheap, but I don’t expect to have to buy a new set for the rest of my life. Look at Lenox, Mikasa, Ginko, Reed and Barton, etc. If they come as a five piece place setting, that’s a good clue they are higher end.

If you can find Oneida silverplate from the 1900-1950 in good condition, it's generally shockingly cheap, and it is just amazingly well made. Just watch out for burnished spots where the silver has worn through. You do have to care for it very specifically - no dishwasher, they get pitted and tarnished.

Kitchen knife for personal use
I started with an Oneida 8" chef's knife before moving on from there. Both my Calphalon and Wüsthof knives are solid, but between those two, the [Wüsthof](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005MEGC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_suTxwb0D9QJ8Q) is the one I could see using decades from now. It's a 10" knife and feels like an extension of my arm when using it. With regular honing and sharpening as well as cleaning it outside a dishwasher, I think that one will last a long, long time.
