  Why do charging cables die so easily?

  On my side I still have OnePlus One + OnePlus 6T charging cables... they are the cable I use evrey day for all my devices and still works as expected after many years. I keep them home, and I use cheap ones when I'm travelling.

  Any small everyday tech that actually holds up long-term?

  I've been using Chinese phones since 2016. I only had OnePlus devices. For two years now I have been using the one plus 12. Prior to this I had the one plus 7 pro. Before this one plus 4 or something. I kid you not this phone is usable 5+ years. Besides the fact that it is Chinese and they spy on you (fu... them for that by the way). I like the device, android is best, everything still functions etc. This current one I have, the 12 version is really good. Battery life is awesome, charges insanely fast and lower cost than the iphone. With the price difference compared to iphone, I bought an anker 737 for travel, 24k ma, I get 4 charges of my phone. Anker is also an extremely good brand. I got also an anker powerhouse 250 kw for my laptop, although the 737 can also charge a 60w laptop no prob. Lastly I bought an anker solix for camping. My advice, avoid iphone, buy cheaper by reputable brand phones and get anker batteries.

  Idk if it's still the case but OnePlus was good for me. My pixel OLED has a green tint after 3 years no idea what's causing it and has left a sour taste for me. Never had a Samsung flagship before but some friends swear by them.

  I had been using my OnePlus 7 for about 5 years when Zi replaced it this summer. It was working great except for the camera, which was my fault. Using the phone on my motorcycle without a vibration dampner ruined the camera. I use it as my dedicated car navigation and music device now.

  The answer you're looking for is OnePlus. It's just top shelf hardware with no bullshit. They will run smooth and keep pace for years. I'm on my 3rd OnePlus I've had the 13 since it came out and only upgraded previously out of desire not necessity. I have no intention to change brands for my next phone either. They just shut up and work.

  I had a very good experience with a One Plus 7 pro. Lasted 5 years before and unfortunate run in with a car door. However I have not heard good things about their new phones.

  4 years for a phone is the least you can have for it !, for a flagship, you will get full OS updates and very good performance, never notice shutters.. it could be up to 7 years for good iphones With that sead, i think if you can accept not having the latest cutting edge tech, you can keep your phone going for 7+ years, up to 10 years or more sometimes ( especially with newer phones ), with good care and some hacks ( roms and such ), you phone can last a really long time ( if you want it to ) I have a Oneplus 9 pro, bought it in 2021 when it launched for around 1000 euros, will be receiving last security update this year, probably will be using stock software for 3-4 more years, then Rom it to the latest android of that time ! Very good value You will need to replace your battery, speakers and such eventually, for good performance.

  Yeah you're right, OP is specifically concerned with phones. I have had phones that didn't work so flawlessly even after just 1 or 2 years. But I (and you perhaps) use Android and the variety is much wider than for Apple, so OP probably doesn't have to worry about that. I think a lot of the time what does a phone in is the lack of software updates. That's great that you've kept a note for 8 years. I kept a OnePlus phone for five years until battery life became a hindrance and software started breaking. That experience was so great I replaced it with another OnePlus.

  Chinese Huawei Honor S1 smartwatch from 2016. Battery life is still extensive and the watch still works like new (unfortunately I need an old phone to pair it)

  The closest thing you can get in the west are OnePlus phones. They're made by BBK instead of Huawei, but they're the only high end Chinese phones available in the west

  Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  Some phones are better at this than others. I had a OnePlus 5 that lasted roughly 5 years, and worked as beautifully as it did on day 1 right up until the chip that makes a phone a phone died catastrophically and wasn't repairable, forcing me to replace it. My current Samsung A53 which replaced it had noticeably slowed down even after a single year, and has only gotten worse since. It will randomly close apps because it can't handle keeping them open (this with all of... 2 apps open, I might add), I press the camera and wait 5+ seconds for it to actually pull it up (I have lost SO MANY photo opportunities because of this), etc... and it's only halfway through its window of promised security updates. At this rate, the phone probably won't survive to reach them. I am never buying a Samsung phone again and cannot recommend them to anyone else either.

  Cell phones - what's the closest brand to a BIFL?

  I am a heavy user and I was gun shy about a 4 year old phone dying on me due to 2 Samsung deaths exactly at the 2 year mark (S3 and Note 4, respectively -showing my age). I dabbled with a LG G4 and traded it in for the 6T. I stopped using that after 4 years because I thought it would eventually die on me prematurely (which it hasn't). I got a Galaxy A53 and the performance was lackluster. After 2 years I again didn't trust Samsung and got the OnePlus 12R. I love it. I just wanted to know what people are using that lasted for far longer than they expected them to.
