  the OG commercial Oreck or Kirby vacuums can be had, used, for cheap at vacuum repair shops. I managed to snag a 'broken' miele for practically nothing at goodwill that I just needed to extricate a sock from, I'd recommend that if you have the option

  Finally stopped buying cheap vacuums and invested in a better one, does it actually last?

  My Oreck U2000 has been going for about 15 years so far.  I replaced the beater bar twice and the impeller twice (both around $12).  Simple, lite, and it works.

  I know fancy or overbuilt vacuums too the list but oreck xl is pretty damn good. I used to have to vacuum a retail warehouse everyday with one. Think 30 minutes of continuous work every single day. It was 5 years old when I got there and when I went back years after i quit they were still using it. Does it have the best suction, no. Does it have the best brush, no. But does it work insanely well and never die. Yes. It’s the best bang for the buck I believe

  I'm just going to add Clarke and Sanitaire to your list for the commercial options. Windsor is also a good choice, because they are often rebranded Sebo's at half the price. Orek is a good buy if you want something lightweight. My mom's XL has been going for 28 years now without needing repair. It's very easy to do stairs with, except it has no hoses or attachments for nooks ans crannies. Shop vacs (and rigid) are also built like tanks. You can use those for nooks and crannies as well as cleaning up liquids and larger chunks that would kill typical vacuums. They are cheap too. The only thing is you have to set them up for their purpose. You can dual filter with a bag and a HEPA filter to get just as precise cleaning as you get on a house vacuum, despite what some people say, but you need to take those off for liquids and use the sponge filter instead.

  > Miele or Sebo bagged canister vacuum cleaner. Both are amazing, made in Germany. We had a couple of Swedish Electrolux cannisters. Google says those are made today in Hungary, where some of my Bosch power tools are also from, so I'd bet the quality is still there. For bagged upright, Oreck Commercial XL all day. Unlike modern consumer/prosumer vacuums, the Oreck Commercials don't try to be everything to everybody, with all kinds of heavy attachments. They're very lightweight and built durably to do the one task.

  In between buying two vacuum cleaners- help me decide!

  I use a Oreck XL with the LONG red cord. It’s terrific, commercial janitors use these, lightweight and it’s definitely good on multi surfaces. Since they are commercial they’re made to run for several hours per day!! We have two cats that shed and it does the job very well. You’ll need a handheld too. For that we have a Bissell series with a rotating brush head and crevice tool. They’re for animals in homes. That’s good for furniture, corners, along baseboards and great for my cats and my cars. All in these are under ~$280 for both. And Oreck parts and bags are easily found online. Well worth the money and they last for years. These are sold to hotel housekeeping maids which I why I own one. E bay has the Oreck brand new from distributors.

  Best vacuum for pet hair?

  Honestly I would recommend just getting separate two vacuums, people sell Oreck X21's on facebook marketplace that are really good for carpet and then you can get a canister for the hardwoods like a Henry 160. Both of those together should fit your budget and give you the versatility to clean whatever floors you have.

  Vacuum at my 90yo grandmother's house. "Works better than all the newer crap" - her quote.

  I have a 49 year old Oreck I got from Craigslist about 6 years ago, works great. Significantly better than any vacuum I’ve used in my life, it’s more of a beater with some vacuum than most, and that seems to be the winner.

  What Vacuum for $150 and under? or maybe $200

  Check out thrift stores for a few weeks - you're sure to run into vacuums like old Kirby models from the 50s-70s that, while they weigh 50 pounds, will suck an egg through a straw. Edit: and Orecks come up a lot too. Grabbed one for $10 and it's completely replaced my Shark. Saw a professional model for $50 at a goodwill today actually.
