i bought a used Ortlieb messenger bag 22 years ago. used it daily for a decade, used it for a 17k mile motorcycle ride. built out a frame to carry my laptop in it. it’s got small holes where it wore through the bottom corners. otherwise fully functional. great how you can remove and replace any and all of the hardware too. not that i’ve had to though. 10/10

Some other great things about them: they are waterproof and the manufacturer has a wide range of spare parts (all attachment hardware, etc.) and the actual bag material can also be repaired, at least some materials with the same stuff you patch tires with.

Looking for a waterproof storage container small enough to fit in a backpack that can hold things like USB batteries, pencils, etc. Waterproof but can also take a beating.
As a fellow bike commuter I highly recommend getting a pannier or set. Outlieb are great but many cheaper ones come with rain flies. Backcountry.com often has pretty decent sales.

Water Resistant Question: Stubble & Co Roll Top vs Ortlieb Commuter Urban
Not exactly what you're asking, but Ortlieb is a reputable German brand and well-known here in Germany. All of their equipment is said to be incredibly durable. I've seen the commuter daypack urban around but haven't used it personally. I have the Ortlieb vario 26l since I'm an avid cycler and am very happy with it (https://de.ortlieb.com/products/vario?variant=49067116331340). Both a 13.3" and a 14" inch laptop fit in the notebook compartment within their felt sleeves, so without a sleeve, there's plenty of room to spare. Good luck with your decision-making!

Duffel bag and other luggage suggestions?
I would go with Ortlieb. They are made of tarpaulin and available in different colors. They also have a urban line, where the tarpaulin has a textile outside texture. They are waterproof and quite sturdy. I have a big (80l) duffle bag for approx 15 years and it is still in use after several flights and motorcycle trips. If you don’t like the roll-top closing, they have a waterproof zipper. We have a whole set of different sizes and colors for the family. When we are on a flight, it is very easy to spot the bags at the baggage claim.

BIFL Metal Carry-on Luggage?
Haliburton, Nanuk, and Pelican if you want hard sided cases. Just remember that they tend to weigh more than their cloth counterparts. They also have a finite storage space and do not expand. If you’re willing to forgo the metallic/slab-sided bags, I would look at Patagonia, Ortlieb, and other high-end outdoor companies. While their bags are not necessarily targeted toward airplanes, their PVC/vinyl alternative products are extremely durable and meant to take abuse. You get what you pay for when purchasing performance-oriented storage for travel.
