Another vote for Osprey hydration packs. Have a larger one that I use for mtbing and one year I did a Superman impersonation and tore up the hose and bite valve. At that time they had changed the hydration bladder style and so they no longer had the parts for my old one, so they just sent me out anew bladder with everything and a couple extra valves free of charge.

I just bought an Osprey hydration pack for my marathon training, and it is definitely legit. So many pockets, I can carry everything! The only downside is that it's so sturdy, I can't wear a sleeveless shirt or it chafes my shoulders.

I second this. I own two for cycling, a hip bag for all mountain riding and a commuter cycling rucksack. Both done 5 years and will easily do much much longer - the fabric quality, thickness and strength from Osprey vs other well established brands I’ve bought from is a cut above the ‘cool’ brands, so much so that I believe rucksack companies that are well respected in other markets for instance like Osprey should really be selling better and making inways. There are a couple of brands that mountain bikers normally stick to that don’t offer that quality. Impressive.

Which Carry On is the Best?
My favorite carry-on is osprey sojourn porter it comes in a domestic carry-on size (46L), and a personal size (30L). Features, build quality, organization, compression/strap system. It also comes in a 2- wheels included option, but I don’t believe either would work with 100% of the international airlines.

osprey from your list makes quality stuff - they're reliable if you want smth that works for both travel and outdoor use. timbuk2 is worth looking at if you want smth more urban/casual, tho the organization isn't quite as dialed in as some other options. for nomatic, [this one](https://d3oc4tmn8qmbnq.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO1784) might work - it's the 20l expandable version. should handle carry-on no problem. main thing tho - don't go bigger than you acc need. if you've got a 13" laptop, get a bag sized for that instead of going oversized 'just in case.' makes a real diff in comfort and weight.

I've been using the osprey daylight for a few years (the older 6L), has held up well. Size has worked well for me, I found when I had a bigger bag/sling I'd end up carrying more stuff and making it too heavy. But it's big enough to put like a water bottle in as needed - some of the smaller 2-3L bags felt stuffed. But very much personal use case

I agree. I used a shitty Walmart carryon for years until someone bought me an osprey bag and it lasted tons of commercial flights and I even used it on my military flights as a pilot so that means the absolute goons in the back securing it were manhandling it. It was like $40 and is still put together fine. Rolling on a floor isn't going to destroy shit as fast as everyone thinks around here. If you're regularly going through like European tourist city centers with stone sidewalks then maybe upgrade but rolling from security to a gate isn't demanding.

TravelPro, if not this then Briggs and Riley. Osprey backpacks work pretty well, the Dayk Lite 26+6. Tumi was my bag of choice for the better part if a decade but really went downhill when they went Nylon and dumped the lifetime warranty. For two decades I flew every Sunday Wednesday and Friday mostly US Air. It was TUMI then. I'm a casual now, maybe 10 flights a year. My BnR Garment bag looks brand new after 5 years. I swapped out my Osprey for the BnR XL backpack 3 years ago with similar results. Osprey was starting to fray at the seams and straps but man it held its own.

I have an Osprey roller going 4 years now. Mine’s discontinued, but they have a few they sell now that are super similar. I’ve travelled once very 1-2 months with it. It’s so well made and rolls really nicely. It fits effortlessly into the bag sizer, and soft shell means you can cram a bunch of stuff into it. I love the pocket at the top, too. Super handy.

I have used a Osprey Farpoint and a Muji carryon. Osprey speaks for itself, works well and i like the design. Muji is not expensive but far more practical than my Samsonite carryon. I also like that it has a button to lock the wheels and prevent it rolling.

I travel to rougher places, do a lot of backpacking and outdoor activities. I have never had a problem with anything Osprey. I have never personally used but have friends who have successfully used their lifetime warranty without issue from the company. Travel pro gets almost overwhelmingly good reviews from the few aircrew members I know but I didn’t have that kind of money and I’m not a business traveler.

Osprey Arcane Extra Large Day; it has a padded laptop sleeve that easily fits my 16 inch MacBook, it has a easy access water bottle pocket good for bottles up to ~1 L, a small “quick access” pocket on the front, one medium sized compartment with internal organization, and then the main compartment is absolutely massive. I like mine, only complaint is the straps could use more padding.

Eagle Creek & Osprey are my favs. I've had great customer service with Thule as well but they just don't have the same quality as Eagle Creek and Osprey. I've checked bags on airplanes and travelled tens of thousands of kilometers with these bags and they mostly still look brand new.

Travel packs usually die from blown zippers or shoulder seams. The fabric is almost never the thing that quits. For a couple weeks in Vietnam, 30 to 40 liters is the sweet spot. Big enough for clothes, small enough that you’re not hauling luggage on your back. Look for YKK #8 or #10 zippers, coil or Vislon. Anything thinner or off brand is what fails first. Shoulder straps need real bar tack stitching at the load points. If you see loose decorative stitching, it’s a fashion bag, not a travel bag. Body fabric in the 500 to 1000 denier nylon or Cordura range holds up. Polyester at this size stretches, sags, and wears through faster than people expect. A simple HDPE framesheet works better than flimsy wire rods or nothing at all. Keeps the load from collapsing on your spine. Secondhand is the right move with your budget. You can actually pull on the seams and check the hardware before buying. Osprey Farpoint or Fairview 40, or the Montane Torque 40, usually tick most of these boxes without getting too precious about things. Avoid the ultralight travel stuff using thin 210 denier fabric. Hikers love it, city abrasion destroys it. Same goes for bags covered in hidden pockets and fancy panels. Every extra seam is another place that rips. Simple bags with decent hardware last longest. Load it up before you commit.

I love my osprey sojorn duffel. I love all the osprey stuff as I do a fair amount of hiking as well. Truthfully the airlines are going to eventually break everything. You're better off knowing the rules of how to make a claim before you leave the airport, with the airline is liable for (The airline would have you think that damaged or lost luggage is just a bare minimum what can get you by replacement, but it's not, it's $3800 per trip) have good travel insurance or a good credit card that backs up the primary liability of the airline for any damage and then get was convenient and works well for you. Generally speaking hard shell cases with zippers are the best of both worlds that are durable but expandable. Hard closures are difficult to deal with and soft sides don't protect the contents very well (coming from a person who loves his duffle which is soft)

tl;dr Osprey, Briggs and Riley. In about 25 years I have gone through one set of checked luggage size Samsonite roller bags and am on my second set. Airlines will eventually be rough enough on checked luggage that they fail somehow. Airline damage is not covered & warranty is I think 10 years. I have had a Briggs & Riley international size rolling carry on since 2009. Warranty is “we don’t care who did what, we will fix it.” It was not inexpensive. I have checked it probably a dozen times and gate checked it even more and it’s held up perfectly. If it got lost or stolen I might not spend the money to replace it with the same. I have several Osprey bags and I would cry if my Porter 65 went missing. It’s basically a duffle bag with good zippers and storable backpack straps. Super easy to pack, lightweight, and great for road trips. This goes on most of my non-business trips, both car and plane. It looks like they have an updated version of it now with Sojourn in the name. Osprey have a “Any reason, any product, any era.” warranty and a global support network. I don’t own any of their wheeled luggage but would happily buy anything they make. They’re one of the BIFL products that’s made well enough that you may never need the warranty - my everyday backpack has a bazillion miles on it and shows no signs of wear and has no problem.

Didn’t realize how attached I was to my old backpack until it finally started falling apart
The osprey's holding up quite well. Theres padding everywhere so it's very comfortable to wear. I've taken one international trip with it for two weeks and had to stuff the backpack into many lockers at train stations, threw it in overhead storage on trains and planes, traveled with it every two days or so, and it still looks brand new.

I still love ospreys - lifetime warranty and heavily padded straps with good back support (some with the thin mesh to spread support along the back). They repair so efficiently. I got the transporter for myself as I cycle and I use it on my bike and on my back - there’s straps to spread across the front but it looks sleek for office. I had awful back issues as I’m an architect and I carry a fairly hefty laptop and books, so I still find them great. I got my husband a few hiking bags with metal and mesh support, really distributes well.

As someone who used to do this, it took over a decade to fix my back. If I could have my current all around backpack when I was younger I would have loved to take it everywhere. Osprey has lifetime warranty, but also support systems for the weight and they're amazing. My hiking pack can be loaded up with like 20-30lbs and It feels like nothing. They make good stuff.

If you’re using it for school, Swissgear makes affordable, versatile backpacks with a lot of pockets for one thing or the next. I had one that lasted me 10 years before starting to rip. Ogio makes really good backpacks for office and school too. Mines lasted 5 years so far with a good amount of abuse and weight. But I find their stuff to be more expensive. There are plenty of other options that make more specialized backpacks. Outdoor/travel brands: osprey, north face, Cotopaxi. Travel specific: aer, tortuga, matador, evergoods,: the list goes on. I find these aesthetic but I think I would have preferred the extra pockets and all where I find these other brands make really nice bags for large compartments with some organization pockets that might be good for minimal use of office supplies and more packing space. Some of the smaller commuter backpacks might be good to use for school. But I still love my Ogio renegade for standard use with way too many pockets. I have a glasses case on top for my safety glasses. Two zip pockets on each side for everyday carry stuff. Water bottle pockets. One of the water bottle pockets holds zip ties and twisty ties. Laptop and folders of course. Main pocket holds all my bulky stuff. Two secondary pockets: one holds all my Office supplies. I have a 3rd bag for day hikes that is about 10 years old and an everyday backpack that’s going on 12 years. +1 for osprey. I'm rough on bags and mine has held up really well. You can get $10 off if you can find someone to refer you. I love my tropos. Super comfortable, has a frame to stand up on its own, and a mesh air gap in the back. I'm a hot person so wearing a backpack in summer means a sweaty back, this one gives a nice airflow. The daylite 26+6 is the ideal single travel bag IMO

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
A few things that really come to mind with no particular order or genre: - Tires and windshield wipers are two consumables that really are worth what you pay for them. - Quality hand tools will always make life easier. (Fluke testers for everything and Leathermans get honorable mentions here.) - Good appliances that you don’t have to worry about will give you peace of mind. Invest in your fridge if you have to pick just one. - Vornado fans are a favorite. - Single-function drip coffee with a gold tone coffee filter. - Running ethernet through your house to every room saves headache, and will always outlive whatever wireless/mesh system you’re currently using. - Wrought-iron outdoor furniture. - Anything that involves entry/exit to your house. Screen door mechanisms, handles/knobs/locks, garage door openers and remotes, gates. - A set of jumper cables, ratchet straps, and an *organized* toolkit for the car. - Hardware hardware hardware. Keep track/stock of nails/screws/turnbuckles/toggle-bolts/etc., and always restock when you notice you’re low. It’s hard to source carpentry materials at 2 AM. Make sure you have it for indoor and outdoor ratings. A small stack of tarps is a must in this category, too. - Grocery-getter shoes. Thoughts on the Osprey Flare 27? It seems to have most of the features I want but would love to know your guys' experience. I'm looking to use this backpack daily for college for the next 5 or so years, at least.
I have the older flare, love it. It's the perfect lightweight bag, Right now some of the mesh has torn, the bottom back fabric is worn off and the lining is flaking. but it's been with me, everyday, for everything. Groceries, hiking, daywalk, commute, work, school, everything. currently it's my diaper bag. nothing ever broke on it, it just got worn. If I could buy it again, I would.

so only real issue is almost no bags are made for 40oz bottles (the 40oz bottles are literally designed large enough to be something you have to carry and thus show off). How does he spend time outside? If he’s into hiking, get him a good pack for day hikes. I have an Osprey Daylite Plus that has been on dozens of hikes with me since 2021 and still looks new, plus they have a lifetime warranty that’s supposed to be pretty great and covers virtually all damage. They’re a bit on the pricey side for day packs, but they’re totally worth it in my opinion. Gregory and Deuter are good too, I don’t have any personal experience with them but I have friends who swear by them. Get a day pack since they’re smaller and don’t need to be fitted so it can truly be a surprise.

I sent my discontinued Quantum pack in for repair and got a similar message. They said some parts couldn’t be replaced, only patched. I told them to do what they could and asked to have it rushed back before my trip to Sicily. They got it back to me much quicker than estimated and even replaced the parts they said they couldn’t! I took that pack above the clouds on Mt. Etna! This is why I have 3 Ospreys, plus the one my wife got for the trip!

I can basically fit a weeks worth of clothes in the main pack and all my accessories and iPad etc in the smaller pack. Zip them together for walking through the airport or onto the plane. You'll be hard pressed to find a waterproof all in one...if you look at timbuk2, Arc'teryx, maybe some paddle bags with roll top like NRS; that may have something. My go to is Osprey packs. Use a rain fly or some have one built in. I have used there warranty multiple times with very good success and support. My backpacking 85L is going strong 20yo.

Backpack recs-Lands End ended up disappointing
If stretchy water bottle pockets are non-negotiable, I'd go for a hiking-oriented pack like an Osprey (lifetime warranty) or Gregory. They are meant to take a beating, literally. IMO stretchy mesh pockets, especially on the exterior, are just not very durable. Those old L. L. Bean and Jansport backpacks could last for decades, but they don't have any elastic or mesh.

I had three things break on an overnight trip. Plastic buckles, sternum strap, and a strap connecting to the hipbelt. 3 of the other straps connecting to the hipbelt were frayed from rubbing against the frame. Filled out the form online and was given a number to write on the package. You have to pay to ship it to Colorado. They pay to ship it back fixed or send you a new one. You also have the option of getting your original pack back if they can't fix it. After they inspected my pack I got an email saying to pick a new Aether 65 from the website in an available color.

Talon 22 was my first Osprey in 2015. The original without the helmet holder. I used it for everything. Absolutely used and abused it. The outer pouch finally teared a couple years ago and the elastic everywhere was pretty much gone. Sent it in asking if they could patch the hole and do something about the elastic, didn’t need to be pretty, I’d pay for it. They offered me a brand new replacement Talon 22. Keep in mind I paid ~$50 on sale. Love them and have about 8 of their bags for this reason.

I have a Talon that’s about 10 years old and has seen far too much action. I’ve crashed on bicycles and mountain bikes with it several times, and the thing just will not give in any way. Easily one of the best values of my life. The thing is pretty nasty looking now, but structurally sound. I also have an Aether 75 which isn’t my favorite, but I bought at an REI garage sale for next to nothing. I’ve only used it a handful of times up until now, so I expect that will probably last me my lifetime.

(Please keep in mind that some of these models may no longer be available coz it's been so long. The specs/volume may have also changed) 1) Talon 22: the first daily beater that I got. I found it on sale at a local department store thrown in a bargain bin. Didn't even know the brand nor its All-Mighty Guarantee. I just bought it because of the lightweight sheer material--fully expecting it to not last. I've since flown with it multiple times as a carry on. 2) Atmos AG 65: bought this for actual camping to carry a tent, a sleeping bag, cooking utensils, and supplies. Super tough and the "anti-gravity" weight distribution system works as advertised. Haven't used it as often as I'd like, but the times I did use it, I absolutely abused it in the wild. 3) Farpoint 40: bought this as upgrade to the Talon 22 for when I fly and can sleep in a proper bed (not camping): with the Talon 22, I could pack maybe 3 days of summer clothes. But any longer or if I needed to pack winter clothes, it's just not big enough. Atmos 65 isn't really suitable for that purpose because it's a camping pack, so it's got a lot of padding and \*structure\*. Also it's got a lot of loose straps, so the airport conveyor belts might eat them. With the Farpoint 40, there's a compartment in which you can tuck all your straps in and turn it into kinda like a "loaf", so you can check it in or throw it in the overhead bin without all the crazy straps sticking out. It's big, but no one has ever asked me to put it on the scale at the airport coz it looks tight. 120% satisfied with this purchase. 4) It's a sling bag but I can't find it on the website anymore. I used it extensively between 2010-2020 when I worked in an office downtown before I moved abroad and left it in storage. I no longer have it in front of me, but it's 100% functionally useable last time I checked.

I have 2 Osprey’s one is very old and held up great. The other I bought in 2018, and I have used plenty, but not like a crazy amount of use (maybe half a dozen times/year). The inside lining which they said is the waterproofing has been peeling off, and on my last trip, it was so bad that all my contents were covered in this brown grubby substance that I had to keep brushing off. I reached out to them, and they recognized it was a defect and are sending me a new pack, so that part is awesome. But similar to the guy above, I would like to see it last more than 7 years/40 uses.

Osprey Farpoint with a detachable daybag. Was able to clip my daybag onto my main pack and it all worked as one singular item at check-in. When you're living out of a suitcase and traveling having a second backpack helps tremendously. Osprey's detachable daybag is great for that without increasing total bulk. It can also be attached to the front to equally distribute weight.

I have used my Osprey Porter since 2011. I've been to >50 countries with it, including three different warzones because I was younger and stupid. ...just this past Spring I sent it in for repair, as the top handle was becoming torn due to airline staff using my bag as a frisbee (I've seen them do it multiple times). Got it back two weeks later, good as new, only cost was the shipping from me to Colorado. No "send your original receipt" BS -- just a photo of the damage, roughly when I bought it, and a code number that's hidden in the interior (I think it tells them exactly which model it is). Osprey now and forever. If they can't execute the repair, you get a free replacement.

Sorry my comment is unclear. I was referring to the Osprey. It's not the cheapest brand but I do find it to be a very a good price for the quality. I've tended to steer away from Samsonite, they look well made but seem geared more towards the business market rather than travel/hiking.

Osprey has says on their website they will repair or replace their products at no cost to ensure their products stand the test of time but it's so well built I haven't had to use their warranty system. My girlfriend and I both use Osprey, I have the farpoint and she uses the porter. We've traveled internationally multiple times and our bags have held up amazingly well over the last 4 years. We do throw a waterproof cover on it when we have to check it with an airline but that's it.

Leather is really more of an aesthetic choice... Especially these days. The designs are rudimentary due to it's limitations, it requires regular care and maintenance in order to last, and you're just missing out on a lot of usability.... Many modern fabrics/materials are just as durable, if not more-so... A few brands that come to mind for me are Osprey, Fjallraven, Peak Design, and Gregory. They all make a very wide range of different bags that are built for maximum comfort, durability, and usability

Need Help Choosing a Backpack
Osprey makes quite a few different 30l or smaller packs. Some with internal frames. My Talon 22 is very comfortable for hiking, but not great for carryon. The frame and belt makes it awkward for underwear/overhead. Also the stretch material on the bag snags and has already torn. I still love the comfort, but compromise seems inevitable

Parent daypack/backpack for hot weather
Second this! I tried a Mystery Ranch pack last year and wish I’d done it sooner. The back panel design really does make a huge difference for air flow and comfort on sweaty days, especially compared to the typical “breathable” options out there. Best Practical & Stylish Backpack for Teachers?
Osprey Arcane. Professional looking but also suits an urban environment, enough but not too many pockets, sturdy but in nice colours and doesn’t look like you’re going for a trek in the woods. Roomy enough for a waterbottle, actually has a sleek external bottle pocket that holds a multitude of sizes from a coffee cup size to big waterbottle size. So the fundamental question that matters with a backpack is what do you intend to carry (and the related question is for how long). I have had several backpacks but I finally have one (two-ish that I like). Tom Bihn, Synik 26 (middle size but holds a laptop in its own compartment). Most important features of this bag to me, it can take a hip belt and it has a luggage handle passthrough. While not the biggest, the hip belt helps with a full backpack. Also it has a boat load of pockets. Tortuga laptop backpack - bought this before Tom Bihn release the Synik 26. It is a good back but misses the hip belt and the luggage pass through was a bit skimpy. The wife uses this as her normal work bag and she seems to have warmed up to it. Patagonia Refugio 26. It works as a backpack. Not my favorite though but it works well in a hurry, especially if we don't feel like unloading our work bags. However the most important question is how much do you plan to carry. My primary use case is day use, but I bought the Synik 26 to pair with a rolling carry on for travel and also for a day hike in the mountains. The others are fine bags and all my bags hold about the same amount of stuff, change of clothing and creature comforts for a long flight (as I said, the rolling carry on does he heavy lifting). Would honestly recommend all of the above. From your list Osprey makes great bags (they were bought in 2021 by Helen of Troy which owns other brands that seem to have maintained their quality but there is definitely a push to scale) as I have several of them for hiking. My carry on is a Briggs and Riley and it is a great bag, and I know they make backpacks too, they just weren't my cup of tea, but I would expect their quality to be great (and an amazing warranty). I think Tumi is a poor allocation of resources. I looked at the Nomatic and Aer bags, and they didn't check my boxes, but people liked them.

I had similar needs as you but i also needed to carry gym clothes and shower stuff with my laptop and my work related stuff. I got the osprey daylite 26 + 6 and i absolutley love it. The clamshell design lets you access and pack everything efficiently, the lapotop pocket is well protected and easy to access and it's a great bag for weekend trips. it can be expanded to 32 liters wich for me is plenty for a week and it can, not expanding it and not filling it to the brim, fit in a free personal item airline slot. It's not canvas but the fabric feels sturdy and osprey is famous for the 30 year warranty that comes with every backpack, i know a dude who asked for a repair on a broken zip on a 5 yo bag and got a band new one. ThisTumi bag was stupid expensive but it's seen a dozen countries and been kicking ass for 11 years.
I've been using the same Jansport Hatchet regularly for 9 years. I want to say I spent maybe $60-70 on it. I stuff it to the brim every time I travel, used it for school for a few years, regular hiking, and grocery shopping. Still going strong, plus they have a lifetime warranty. Nothing fancy. I did opt for an Osprey for a duffel bag over a Jansport, but mainly because the Jansport lacked the storage compartments and convertability to a backpack (we've had the Osprey for a year and a half and love it, and the lifetime warranty was what sold me). To be fair, I can't speak to the build quality on Jansport bags 9 years later since I haven't had to replace mine, but even an Osprey doesn't cost $600. Ridiculous.

5.11 Tactical Are their backpacks worth the price?
I have a 5.11 12 hour and I love it, although I lost one half of the sternum strap and they're hard to replace (in the UK). But other than that it's lasted me very well. I have an osprey day bag and that's great too, but it's comparing apples and oranges. The 5.11 is basically a bug out bag containing everything I might need (including a little MOLLE) first aid kit and the osprey is a light bag to hold a couple of things while I'm out for a walk.

It has been on many flights and is really rugged. It is huge and holds so much stuff so the only concern is going over the airline luggage weight limit. It has a boot compartment for dirty boots and it has large rugged rubber wheels that can handle any rugged terrain or stairs. Highly recommend.

The first was my everything bag: hunting/fishing, living homeless for a few years from 17-19, etc. there wasn’t a day it wasn’t with me. From there it was continuing the above minus being homeless, then having kids, then landing chronic illness that wound up with the original pack (since it had a bladder space) becoming a TPN pack for a few years, worn 12-13hrs hrs a day while working as an aerospace mechanic along side of it. Literally came here to say this. I got my first Osprey used at 16 from my grandad. By 20 I had beat it so badly I sent it in for a repair evaluation and they just sent me a new current model of the pack instead. That pack lasted till I was 30 and sent in for repairs, fully repaired and replaced every pull, zipper, etc too. I got another when I was late 20’s that got repaired around 37, both my kids (now 17 and 15) have had one since starting high school and my eldest is hitting the point where we’re sending it in come summer. They’re literally one of the only companies I’ve found to have a warranty this transparent, and support their products even beyond what the warranty covers. I will always buy osprey when it’s an option for bags.

So this is a little niche, I love osprey for hiking but I’m a journalist and when I’m in the field I need a more internally structured bag to protect my kit. I really love Peak Design Bags for that. Great camera bag, very sturdy while being light. Can be customized and the dividers are totally movable. I am an environmental reporter, so my gear takes a beating. But this bag has held up. Also recommend the Sony a7R series. Even with my constant abuse it only needs servicing every 2-3 years

In the EU I love my osprey stuff. Got three packs (backpacking, day hiking, and laptop/commuter) and a washbag and they really last. The only thing I don't love is my day hiking pack, a Talon 22, because of how it never quite seems to fit what I need. Plus the air foam pattern on the back has come loose (though that's fine, it's still entirely in place, and doesn't hurt performance at all). Honestly this one looks more fashion based than genuinely rugged. It's pretty hard to find a good canvas rucksack with modern ergonomics, especially an inbuilt frame. Almost none of them will have a decent hipbelt. If you really want to satisfy hiking specs, buy a frame and rig it up. Takes more effort for sure, though. Probably easiest for you is just to stick to Deuter or Osprey and get a black one, if you care about the aesthetics.

I’ve always been a Makita guy without knowing anything about the corporate side. My tools always just felt more solid and durable than coworkers’ Dewalt or Milwaukee. Then I saw this in r/construction.
I just usually come here and see what the subreddit's opinion is. It's why I got an Osprey backpack. If it has a great warranty I'm sold. Patagonia and LL Bean are other great examples. LL Bean did away with their Lifetime Warranty in 2018, switching it to 1 year, but if there is something defective they will still replace it after 1 year, so they realllllly didn't change it much. Before it was like Patagonia warranty-ing wear and tear, and now it isn't, which is okay with me because LL Bean is cheaper.

Honestly, I suggest you lay out what you need to carry to get a weight/volume estimate. Then hit up MEC (Canada) or REI (US). Try on the various day packs and hiking packs. Fill them with the provided sand bags and walk around. All packs will fit differently for different people. There’s no one size fits all. Brand wise, Mystery Ranch, Osprey, Fjallraven are generally great. Do you need it to be water proof or have a cover? How much organization and pockets? Padded laptop section? Separate area for gym clothes?

I’ve got an Osprey daypack as well as backpacking backpack and I have to say they’re just the best. Their frames are comfortable and durable and Osprey will repair the packs for life. even the daypack is sized, so make sure to measure yourself and buy according to the size chart, and it also has multiple points of adjustment, including the height of the chest strap and distance between the shoulder strap and your upper back, much like a through hiker backpack. For my daypack i went with the women’s Sirius 36 in black, which isn’t too hiker-y and also does me really well on weekend travels and still fits under most airline seats. Very comfortable to walk (or run!) fully loaded through the airport. i don’t worry about waterproofing because even my daypack has an integrated rain fly that works really well (it’s been on multiple trips to the rainforest with me).

I am currently using an Osprey Arcane, and really like the size for EDC for my work laptop and other bits. Osprey has lifetime warranty and repair on their products, but probably good to have a second one so you aren’t without if there are issues. Tom Bihn is nice too, doubt you will blow through any of those bags.

My very dull and old-fashioned take on it: Buy your backpack for carrying comfort. All the clever solutions in the world don't mean a thing if the bag is uncomfortable to carry. I'd buy Osprey in your case, and only have positive experiences with Osprey. I have a Farpoint 40 for shorter trips. It's great to pack in if you use packing cubes, and has a very good laptop compartment that's easy to take the laptop in and out of, like when you're going through security. Very good carrying comfort, well thought-out solutions (love how you can pack the straps away), probably overkill for a school backpack. I've also got an Aether 85+ for hiking trips, and also has great carrying comfort. Used it last summer, was amazed at how comfortable it was when it was fitted properly. The packs themselves aren't waterproof, you'll need a rain cover for that. Lucky for you, they pack down very compact and are very light, so you'll hardly notice them at all. For your consideration, there's also Kuiu's day packs, the Venture series. They're hunting day packs, but the carrying comfort is the best I've ever experienced. It's like getting a nice hug from behind. No laptop pocket, but you could use the hydration bladder pocket for it if you have to. Some of them come in darker shades of gray, brown and green, otherwise it's camo for you. Might be a bit expensive to get from the US if you're in Oz, I don't know about that. Some features you probably won't need in school, like attachment points for their very lightweight gun carrying system. Same as with Osprey, you need a separate rain cover. For your zipper problems: Could it be that you're over-stuffing your bag, causing extra stress on the zippers as you close it? If so, you might want a bigger bag than the one you currently have, and take care with how you load it.

I really wanted a Bellroy because of me seeing all the office workers using them, but I went into Milligram today to check the quality and tbh it didn't feel as spectacular as I thought it would. The aesthetic is super super super nice but if it does end up looking lumpy like that maybe it isn't for me. I have a farpoint which is why I thought about an Osprey for an everyday uni backpack. Osprey for me is BIFL although I haven't bought a new one in 10+ years bc the ones I have withstand so much beating. However, I have bought other brands that look more professional for work. I have the bellroy classic backpack premium, and tbh I found it to be overpriced. It's a similar shape to the lite backpack you're considering. I'm not a fan of the shape bc even though it looks nice, it's harder to fit more things in it and when it's full it looks lumpy.

I used to spend 150 nights a year in hotels traveling for work. I'd spend about $150-$200/yr on new backpacks and luggage because I always got medium quality. I got my first Osprey bag in 2010, myself and my kids still use that one to this day, and our other 3 are going strong. My kids who wanted more fashionable bags for school have had 6 bags each over the 11 and 10yrs they've been going to school respectively. Exceeded the cost of an Osprey bag. I'm hard on things, I can afford to replace them if they fail, and my Ospreys ( Sojourner specifically) have been the most durable bag I've owned by a long shot.

I have an older version of this backpack, before they added in the zip pockets on the front of the bag and in the second compartment. It's a reliable laptop bag that can hold a lot of things. Just check that your laptop actually fits into the sleeve as my legion 5 pro 2021 model barely fits. My only issue with this bag is that on my version (2021/early 2022) there is a hydration bottle port right above where the laptop sleeve is and I am always paranoid about it leaking during rain and use a rain cover, I am unsure if this version shown above has that.

I've been using it as a college bag for two years now, and it's in great shape. I'll second the other comment that the only damage its gotten is some tears in the water bottle mesh, both of which still work fine. One thing I will note is to be careful using the primary laptop pocket, as it doesn't have any cushion between it and the bottom of the bag. Over the course of a year or so of drops, the corners of my laptop have gotten a little dented. Not a huge problem though, as it has 2 other sleeves that work with most size laptops and don't have the same issue. Overall, would recommend :)

I can't speak to that exact model, but I have a similar older Osprey backpack that I got for Xmas...I'm honestly not even sure any more but it's been at least a decade. It travels with me to work every day, it's one of my carry-on bags every time I fly, it's by day trip bag when I go to festivals and stuff for a weekend or overnight, it goes pretty much wherever I go, frequently stuffed to the point of bursting with all kinds of crap strapped to the front and through every kind of weather. The sum total of wear that that bag has recieved is one of the pieces of mesh for a water bottle on the front is a little torn. Never broken a buckle, never broken a zipper, never ripped a seam, NOTHING. Osprey bags FUCK. Worth every penny and more. I don't know if I'll ever need to replace it but if I do I'm buying another Osprey. BIFL classic brand, can't go wrong. Literally my only complaint is that I don't love the colour but that's it.

My dog (when she was a puppy) chewed through the chest strap, 2 buckles, and 2 zipper pulls. They sent replacements no questions asked, no arguments, no BS. That alone gives them a big thumbs up from me.

I used a daylight throughout college and still have it. Any osprey will be awesome but go to REI and try some on first just to get what you like.

Backpacking with Back Pain
I would just get a backpack that has a waist belt/strap (and not one of those skinny ones. Ones with padding and some structure. That way most of the weight can be carried lower on your body. It really reduces the load. Osprey has really changed over the last 20-ish years. I had to check their website for dates - 2002 production started to shift from the US to Korea and Vietnam. And in 2021 Helen of Troy purchased Osprey Packs. I personally LOVE my older packs, thicker canvas and webbing, they feel like a different brand than what Osprey currently makes and the materials they use. I have a couple of newer things - the compression bags are awesome! - but always go back to my faves.

Get Osprey if they're available in Canada. I got a backpack there over 10 years ago that I used for cycling/commuting. It wore out after 5 years or so but their warranty is insane. Essentially you can send any of their products back and they will repair or replace, no questions asked. No proof of purchase needed. I think a plastic buckle broke on my first one so I sent it back. They didn't make that model anymore and it wasn't repairable so they sent me a new one for free. All I paid was the shipping to send it to them. I may never have to buy a backpack again. Get an Osprey backpack like the faraway 40. You’ll get much more use out of it than a suitcase. Try Muji. The wheels glide on their suitcases and also have a lock to stop the case rolling.

I bought an osprey bag especially for Disney. It holds 2l of water and we’d fill it everyday with ice before going to the parks. It also carried phones and small stuff we bought along the way. Super comfortable too!

Love Osprey but whatever high end bag you get, go to a store to test drive it. Your height and body size matter a lot for comfort. Even within the Osprey bags made for women’s bodies, I found some of them rubbed my neck. I did end up with a perfect fit for me.

Another vote for Osprey. I bought a day pack about 5 years ago and use it as a laptop bag/travel pack/hiking pack and it’s excellent. Has straps/buckles to make it slimmer when I’m not carrying much, but fits enough clothes to use it for overnight airline travel.

I use Osprey for hiking and TimBuk2 for work and both have been very comfortable! I have obviously lugged my Osprey day pack for miles at a time (I back trampoline is amazing) and I have lugged my TimBuk2 to and from work everyday as well as all over airports. I think that at the time I bought my TimBuk2, Osprey didn't have a bag with a padded laptop sleeve for a 17" laptop, otherwise I epidemic bought a slightly different Osprey.

For comfort, Osprey. The hiking packs are the most comfortable, but they tend to lack organization. They do make travel and commuter packs with more organization, laptop pockets, etc., but I tend to prefer the hiking packs. Personally I use a Tempest 20 (men's version is Talon) for day hikes, commuting, and as a carry-on. It's a hiking pack, but it fits a 13" laptop in a padded sleeve, a book, a soft lunchbox, a light layer, and other odds and ands. Without the laptop you can cram quite a lot in it if necessary.

Also ask over at r/onebag You'll get a lot of comments here for Osprey, (which i also can recommend firsthand) But also you'll get suggestions for Tom Bihn, Mystery Ranch, TimBuk2 brands. Tom Bihn probably outta budget, but the other 3 brands are all very well recommended in BIFL.

Osprey. Mine has two main compartments. The larger one is closest to the back and has an inner laptop sleeve. The outer, slightly narrower compartment has three small inner pockets for keys, batteries and other knick knacks. It also has a quite large, easy access, outer pocket, handy for an umbrella, the sweater you had to remove when the weather became warmer than you thought, a water bottle etc.

I looked a lot at this same stuff last year when I was getting all new equipment for motorcycle camping, so some of it is still fresh in my mind. I don't know much about UK shopping sites so I just linked to manufacturers sites. Backpack - For a pack I would check out a [Gregory Baltoro 65 or 75](http://gregorypacks.com/en/shop-men-backpacking), very nice, great suspension system, should last a lifetime, and highly rated everywhere. [Osprey](http://www.ospreypacks.com/) also makes some good packs. Cooking - After comparing fuel types for size, weight, how long fuel will last; I went with a [Jetboil MiniMo] (http://www.jetboil.com/Products/MiniMo-Cooking-System/). It all packs into the pot including the fuel canister. Works in most any conditions except extreme altitudes, canister fuel less hassle than white gas or alcohol, and one canister can last a decent amount of time. This being BIFL, can't go without talking about the [Optimus Hiker](http://shop.katadyn.com/product/155185/8016278/_/Optimus_Hiker%2B) or the [Optimus Svea](http://shop.katadyn.com/product/155185/8016279/_/Optimus_Svea). I have an Optimus 8r (older version of the Hiker) that I got from my father who bought it in the early 70's and it's still going strong. You can still find people selling Optimus 8r's and Svea 123's on eBay and other places for ok prices. For something completely different and really BIFL because no moving parts at all, get an alcohol stove like this [Vargo Triad](http://www.vargooutdoors.com/triad-alcohol-stove.html) or a [Trangia](http://trangia.se/en/selecting-the-right-trangia-stove/) system. Just have to realize limitations of an alcohol system. Sleeping Bag - I went with this bag after my research, the [Nemo Strato Loft Down Sleeping Bag](http://www.nemoequipment.com/product/?p=Strato%20Loft). I'm not comfortable in mummy bags, and this was the best thing I could find out there that wasn't a mummy. I also looked hard at the [Sierra Designs Backcountry Bed](http://www.sierradesigns.com/product/backcountry-bed-800-2-season) and the [Montbell Downhugger 650](http://www.montbell.us/products/list.php?cat_id=3213) which are both more like a mummy-style bag. If you're willing to spend more money look at something from [Feathered Friends](http://featheredfriends.com/). A good down sleeping bag that is not abused and cared for properly should last a long time. Tent - The tent I liked and went with is the [Seirra Designs Flash 2](http://www.sierradesigns.com/product/flash-2). Decent weight, easy setup, really happy with it myself. If you're using trekking poles and want lightweight, I would look at the [Tensegrity 2](http://www.sierradesigns.com/product/tensegrity-2-fl) from them which uses trekking poles to set up. Tools - Just get a [Leatherman Wave](http://www.leatherman.com/wave-10.html#start=2) or a [SwissTool Spirit](http://www.swissarmy.com/us/en/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/SwissTools/SwissTool-Spirit-XC/p/3.0227.L). A good hatchet can come in real handy at times too. This one from [Gränsfors Bruk](http://www.gransforsbruk.com/en/products/forest-axes/gransfors-hunters-axe/) is great, just expensive. For a knife this [Mora Bushcraft](http://www.moraofsweden.se/adventure/bushcraft-survival-black) is pretty awesome and is all the knife most people need. Extras - As someone else said, always have some paracord on hand. Also some kind of alternate fire starting method aside from matches or a lighter. A [Lifestraw](http://lifestraw.com/) is cheap and good for an emergency situation, but a BIFL water filter would be this [Katadyn Pocket](http://shop.katadyn.com/product/155146/2010000/_/Katadyn_Pocket) with the drawback of being stupid expensive. Extra tent stakes for different terrain, I usually have these [MSR Groundhogs](http://www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/tents/tent-accessories/secure/groundhog-tent-stakes/product/) for most types and a couple titanium nail stakes like these [Vargos](http://www.vargooutdoors.com/titanium-nail-peg.html) for really hard ground. A small trowel, folding shovel or E-Tool can come in handy too.

The lifetime warranty on Osprey packs are for the "product's reasonable lifetime" (rather than your lifetime) btw- which they don't seem to specify for each product. So I'm skeptical on whether they'd repair a rucksack after 20 or 30 years of use because that could be past the "lifetime" of the pack? Apart from that possible issue, Osprey packs are awesome. I bought one last week and have taken it through bushes, on boats, in heavy rain.. it has pockets for everything, no water has got in yet even in the rain, there's even a clip on the front for my bike helmet so I don't have to put it inside the rucksack! They have thought of everything. I used a Mountain Warehouse rucksack for going around Europe for 3 months this summer and my back was a wreck towards the end. I'm going to get a large Osprey pack for my next big trip :)

My time to shine! -Tent, you can't go wrong with anything from Big Agnes, they make amazing tents -Pack, get a Osprey pack they have lifetime warranties on their gear. The packs themselves come in subtle colors and provide everything you need in terms of storage and features. -Sleeping bag, get either Feathered Friends or Western Mountaineering. They have the best bags imo.

I've recently bought a lot of this stuff after doing a good amount of research. Here are my recommendations: **Tent** - I would get an Alps tent if you want a good value tent but aren't as worried about weight. How many people will you be going with? **Sleeping Bag** - I have [this](http://www.columbia.com/reactor-35-mummy-ii-sleeping-bag-UU9907.html) sleeping bag which I absolutely love, but I haven't been able to find it online since I bought it. It packs as small as down sleeping bags but costs a fraction of the price and will still keep you warm in 30 degree weather (which it's done for me). **Pack** - I just bought the [Osprey Volt 75L](http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008RB37S6?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00) which I think is a great value even though I haven't used it yet. I got it for $140 on amazon and the 60L version is less expensive than that. I'm not sure if this pack is bulletproof but it has great reviews and Osprey products are known for their high quality. **Cooking**- I use [this pot](http://smile.amazon.com/Outop-Camping-Backpacking-Cookware-Outdoor/dp/B00FQZEYWE/ref=sr_1_4?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1449429681&sr=1-4&keywords=camp+pot) which works perfectly with a pocket rocket. I'm not sure what you mean by fire making equipment but if it's not below freezing or at a high altitude, the gas canisters are the most efficient and reliable way to cook food. Also, they're extremely light. If you're using a fire to cook you'll need a heavier duty pot/pan. **Clothes** - I just look for good deals and buy when I find one. Get a good shell that's waterproof and breathable. I have a [Marmot Nano AS Jacket](http://www.campsaver.com/nano-as-jacket-men-s) that I love. Just make sure you have a baselayer that wicks sweat away and other layers that can pack down. DON'T USE ANY COTTON CLOTHES! **Tools** - Other than a knife I have found any tools that are useful for their weight. If you have a solid knife you should be good. **Misc** - Here's other things in my list for camping/backpacking: **Sleeping Pad** - I use the [Alps Sleeping Pad](http://smile.amazon.com/ALPS-Mountaineering-Lightweight-Self-Inflating-Regular/dp/B001LF3FQE/ref=sr_1_2?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1449430367&sr=1-2&keywords=alps+sleeping+pad). You definitely need a sleeping pad if you're camping in colder weather for the insulating properties. You'll lose a significant amount of heat through the cold hard ground without a pad. The Alps pad is a little heavier but they're very durable and a great value. **Paracord** - It's always useful to have paracord for different things. **Water Filter** - You need this if you're going to the backcountry. It's not realistic to bring enough water with you for a weeklong trip. I have use [this MSR water filter](http://smile.amazon.com/MSR-56425-MiniWorks-EX-Microfilter/dp/B000BBF2RY/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1449430619&sr=1-1&keywords=MSR+water+filter) and the [Sawyer Squeeze](http://smile.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-SP126-Filtration-System/dp/B00FBGCFZG/ref=sr_1_5?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1449430657&sr=1-5&keywords=water+filter). The MSR filter costs more, but works very well and is fairly durable. The Sawyer Filter weighs almost nothing, but it's a little more difficult to use and definitely more difficult if you're trying to filter large quantities of water. Not everyone will agree with everything on my list, but I try to find the best value in my gear. I look for the best value in terms of price, quality, weight, and packability. There are higher quality options that weigh less but cost more. There are other lower quality options that cost less. You'll have to decide what your balance is, but this should be a good list to get you started.
