Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.
It only takes junk to be bought and replaced or trashed to open up and develop a BIFL mindset. Well used 10-40+ years and going strong: fountain pens, old Oster toaster, Zojirushi Rice Cooker, same old silverware, pottery bowls I've thrown, Le Creuset Dutch Oven, Lodge cast iron pan, 8 qt Fagor Pressure Cooker, Classic Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, G-shock watch, butter knife from Goodwill, old repaired Patagonia jackets/vests, etc ... the BILF list goes on and on but it is just stuff that helps make life less hassled, don't have to worry about because the quality lasts or I can repair. Not so much about luxury, just use over time. I think all of these things can be found used, on sale and not full retail.

Straight hair head shaver/buzzer? Want to begin doing my own hair at home. Or to keep me, lacking the hair...
Honestly, a razor is best. I've tried the various devices, but a razor gives me the best results in the least time. Fwiw my fav machine was the Oster 706

What’s the best beard trimmer if you want something that lasts long?
Oster Fast Feed for sure! It’s plug in, so no battery to go bad and it’s a legit barber grade clipper. I buzz my head & trim my beard once a week. Oil them up every few times and you are golden for quite a long time. I was lucky to find mine at a thrift store for $6, but I’d definitely buy them full price if it came down to it.

What’s the best beard trimmer if you want something that lasts long?
Long Lasting + Battery... probably not gonna happen... So if you go corded, Oster Classic 76 of Wahl % Star Senior, both will last a LONG time, have parts you can get, accessories, etc.

Like others have said… drop the battery, and get a real hair clipper. The Otis Fast Feed is wonderful, Andis products are great, too. Both will last you decades.

My parents industrial Vitamix 3600 received as a wedding gift in the mid 70's, still making smoothies and grinding wheat into flour without complaint
....In all the time I used it, I never once thought to blend soapy water to clean it. Damn that's a good idea. In the end though, I ended up getting an oster for my smoothies since it diced up the fruit chunks so much better.

Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?
An Oster toaster. My wife had when we were dating it’s the simplest thing and it was cheap. 19 yrs it still works as good as the day she bought it.

Recommendations for electric trimmers?
I've used a corded Wahl Peanut for years and it's great. I have a corded Oster Speedline that I like, too. I don't travel with them, but IME corded anything just works better than cordless. The tradeoff is the portability.

Buying what my parents use
Oscar food processor. My mom bought hers in 1983. She bought a second one in box at a thrift shop in the late.90s. I inherited both in 2015, and gave the boxed one to a friend. In 2020, I upgraded to a bigger one, and I miss the Oscar everytime I need to do a small amount.

Looking for a trimmer for head (0.5–1 mm) and a longer beard
I use Oster clippers with detachable/interchangeable blades. I've been using the same pair of clippers since like age 18 (I am 50 now, geez) and you can have the blades resharpened if they get dull. Actually, the clippers weren't new when I got them, either so I honestly don't know how old they are. But I shave my head almost bald once a week and have been doing that for I guess well over two decades now. Had a beard for a while, too - just used a longer blade. It seems Oster calls these the "Classic 76". 10/10 would recommend if you are looking for a BIFL trimmer/clipper.

Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?
What changed for me was dating a hair dresser lol. I always used Braun and Phillips type stuff and frankly they are trash compared to stuff like oster that hair stylists use and know.

Best hair clippers that’ll be effective and last
Oster Classic 76 - I own a set, they can be completely rebuilt, and have been that way for years. BUT there’s a tradeoff, they’re kinda cumbersome, so the tradeoff is there - they’ll outlive the nuclear holocaust, BUT they’re harder to handle. If it’s a DIY buzz cut you’re after, they’re probably fine for you (that’s what I use them for and they’re fine for that), but if you’re a hairdresser, kinda bulky. That said if I had to go back and do it again, I’d probably be looking at an Oster Fastfeed instead of a classic 76.

What's one kitchen appliance you've owned for 10+ years that still works perfectly?
Oster Blender - received about 1974 as a gift and we're still using it. The original blade and O-ring mechanism are still in it and work wonderfully, as well. Bought my home 28 years ago and purchased a used refrigerator, at that time. It's still working fine, as well. It's a Frigidaire.

The Best Toaster Oven???? Does it exist, do you care???
I did my research. Leaning towards a breville at @ $300. I was at habitat for humanity and my friend pointed out an Oster convection toaster oven for 15 dollars. It had a hot dog bag remains melted on top. 15 dollars later it was home and the melted plastic bag cleaned off quick. I forgot how many years ago. I make pies, cook roasts bake bread. Everything. I. Got some trays that fit perfectly on line and roast veg. No signs of quitting . I was a sceptic at first. i will keep until it fails. It is tiny though.

Which Blender is Better?
I hate the oster 10 speed blender vintage cause I’m not used to it and never grew up with it and my nana had it and I was disapproving it but the oster 16 speed blender is way better because I grew up seeing oster blenders similar to the 16 speed and plus we just got the oster 16 speed blender 6878 since Christmas of 2021 but I have an oster 14 speed blender 6694 and 6803 and they are really good ones and I also have oster blstcubp2 black and it’s good because all 4 of those oster blenders have has the same 6 cup glass jar but 6694 and 6803 lids are white and both but one is from Walmart and the other is sears while two others are black from Amazon and 12 speed is from target and my mom had a ninja for 10 years but sadly the ninja bullet won’t work anymore since this year. But the oster 6640-022-NP1 is better then the vintage because the design is better and plus I saw it at target many times like every target.

Process of finding BIFL
Honestly, for a lot of my items, I just use historical background. If a lot of examples of a given product (say a Hamilton watch, Osterizer blender, Braun electric razor, etc.) have survived regular use for decades and are still functional to this day, I get those. Its a reasonable bet that if they continued to function back then, they will continue to function now. This approach doesn't work for everything of course, but does for me about 80% of the time.

Smooth Beard Trimmer BIFL
the Wahl can do that if you don't adjust them right as they have two screws that control the blade spacing. Osters are set and forget, I have not had an issue with either of them once I disassembled, greased, and reassembled/adjusted the Wahl blade (it was way too tight when I first got it)

Smooth Beard Trimmer BIFL
Wahl 5 star Senior or Oster Classic 76, Wahl has a few longer guards (10 or even 12) that I have not been able to find for the Oster, so if you want to run a guard that long, the Wahl is the pick. But the blades are much easier to deal with on the Oster. I actually think the Oster is a tad more powerful and takes less passes, but I have both and have been extremely happy with both of them.

Which Blender is Better?
That oster 16 speed blender is better because of everything like how the way it looks and it has a better sound and I’m never used to some vintage oster blender that is square shaped because it does not work out for me and plus as I’m 14 turning 15 on October 2025, I grew up with the oster blenders similar to the oster 16 speed blender which is the oster 14 speed blender 6694 white which was bought from Walmart around 2010-11ish and it’s still working really well.

Any experience and opinions about this Osterizer 6650 blender? Looking for an old, yet durable one. Found this at a local second hand store, and can evidently notice its wear and tear. Looking also for advice about what to inspect before Buying one Osterizer for Life
That oster blender is really good because it’s better then some vintage square shaped crap, and if its from the 2000s or 2010s then that’s great but this blender was probably bought before it was for sale around 2009 or 2010 and I have that oster blender but we don’t know if that jar is the 6 cup glass jar or 5 cup clover shaped glass jar, because the 6 cups glass jar goes better with that blender base and plus I have the 6 cups glass jar for that oster blender I make smoothies with, the oster blenders from the late 2010s or the current countertop oster blenders from the 2020s which is not powerful is just terrible, but yeah like what I recommend is using that oster blender base with the 6 cups glass jar because it goes better with that blender base, if you have the clover shaped jar, it is good but it may not be my favorite but yeah just telling you that the 6 cups glass jar goes better with the blender base and if your blade is having issues, use the 6 star blade.

Hair clippers - don’t but the cheapies. The Oster 76 and Oster’s clean-up trimmer have been used by me for over 10 years with fail.

What's one item you've owned for years that's still going strong-and was totally worth the money?
ha, that reminds me I have a beard trimmer that I have used for forty years. Oster, I think, the label wore off a couple decades ago.

Blender recommendations needed! Looking for something durable but budget-friendly that can handle daily smoothies?
Not sure if you guys have had this issue with the ninja auto iq, but i’ve had to replace the plastic blade attachment many times due to impossible cleaning/mold smell growing in the part that screws on. Not sure if it’s BIFL but after a lot of research I just bought a Oster blender for under 100, because the blade setup looks like easier cleaning. Fingers crossed it will hold up

Oster might do the trick

Is the Aeitto brand really worth it for a blender?
Thanks for your input. Anyways, I ended up fixing an oldish Oster from the early 20s. Perfect for what I needed, inexpensive, and working flawlessly thus far. Plus learnt a lot about their motors. We gotta try to fix stuff ourselves whenever 'possible'.

Oster 76 and Fast Feed
I bought a refurbished 76 on Amazon in 2020 when the government decided barbershops were disease incubators (but breweries and Walmarts were not). Haven’t been to a barbershop or salon since.

What is the longest lasting item you've bought?
This small/medium sized Oster toaster oven which is 18 years old and used almost daily. Got it as a wedding present and has been with us since our first one bedroom apartment. That toaster oven is one of the reasons why I haven’t had a need for an air fryer.

Which clippers should I buy? Not going over $200. Also doesnt have to be one of these but these are the two I’m considering
I think they're all great. Personally, I own the Oster clippers and they're great. I bought them because my parents had a set that they'd had got decades.

I am happy with my oster 76. Professional quality under 200. I've had mines for years and still works like new

I've used my Osters 3 times a week for 10 years. Wouldn't trade them for anything

Been shaving my head for 22 years, I am on my second borders Oster Classic 76, first one lasted about 15 years, and I’m terrible at maintenance, and dropped it a lot (which is why it think it started having problems)

The Oster all day hands down. I have two and one is over ten yrs old. Blade can be switched out to ceramic if you want. Brother also has one. South American barbers only run Oster.

Oster classic 76 instead. They're under 200 and the gold standard of BIFL clippers. I have a set, ten years is nothing for this bad boy. The entire thing can be rebuilt, blades sharpened, etc.

Love my Oster model 10 professional clippers. Prefer them to Wahl quality wise but u probably can't go wrong either way.

What's the oldest appliance you own?
Oster Blender-2013, used intermittently and has definitely put in some hours. It still works like a charm.

[BIFL Request] Manual hair clippers with length guard
I wanted to comment on this in case any other person wanders into this thread years after the fact. First of all, yes, the Speed O Guide guards recommended do fit my vintage Oster manual clippers. They also works great on beards and head hair. I have yet to experience the hair pulling when using length guards, apart from when running through thick hair too quickly. I cut my own hair with manual clippers, both with guards to taper the back and sides and clipper over comb for the longer length on top. This was the first time I had even cut my own hair, and anyone else’s mileage may vary, but it turned out great. It was good enough that I’ve since done haircuts for two friends, both with manual clippers. Anyone also making a big deal about fatigue is making a bigger deal about it than necessary. Unless you’re running a barber shop using them as your primary instrument, soreness shouldn’t be a problem. It certainly isn’t “better” than real electric clippers which were otherwise recommended, but they are certainly useable and even versatile. If someone reading this has a vision in mind, go for it!

Best electric face shaver?
I use an Oster Professional Fast Feed Clipper because my wife likes a five o clock shadow. It's a plug in, no battery. Before I bought it, I checked that it's the same model barbers use every day at work. You can get an extra piece for it that gives a closer shave. For a totally smooth shave I just use a traditional safety razor. It does the job perfectly, doesn't need batteries, and the replacement blades are way cheaper.

Beard trimmer reccomendations?
Wahl Senior 5 Star, or Oster Classic 76. You can get longer #10 and #12 guards for the wahl if that’s what you are after. Classic 76 has an easier to replace and clean blade. So let your needs drive your decision.

Very good blender. It was my first blender out of college and lasted me a good 5 years until the jar cracked.

What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?
I have a stainless steel, 4 slice toaster from Oster that I purchased so long ago, I don't even remember but it has to be about 25 years. Funnily enough, my daughter bought us a brand new Smeg toaster for Christmas but I'm taking it back and sticking with old faithful for the long haul!

Hair clippers - don’t but the cheapies. The Oster 76 and Oster’s clean-up trimmer have been used by me for over 10 years with fail.
Ypu can't go wrong with Oster and Andis

Which Blender is Better?
I’d rather use the silver 16 speed oster blender on the left because I have one and on the right, nope I’m not using one that is not the blender I’m used to and grew up with and plus, I have that oster 16 speed blender silver on the left and the model number is 6878 and jar is 6 cup glass jar

Need a good beard trimmer and a great nose/ear trimmer. Help!
for Beard you want corded. I like the Oster Classic 76 or Wahl Senior 5 Star (you can get longer guards for the Wahl they have a #12) I have the Wahl Stainless Lithium-Ion 2.0 Cordless Rechargeable for nose, ear, etc. It has worked and worked for I think 4 years at this point. It is solid, the attachments are good and easy to get, I can solidly recommend it.
