  Why do charging cables die so easily?

  Getting an otterbox with a rubber plug that goes over my charging port helped decrease the buildup of lint and debris significantly. Also, using a wireless charger next to my bed keeps the wear and tear to a minimum.

  I love otterbox, i worked on elevators a couple years ago and i had my damn near new iphone 14 sitting on a kickplate thats used so ladders can hang over hoistways. But i started walking down and forgot my phone was on the edge and it plummeted 4 stories onto the metal frame of the elevator. Not a single crack, no internal damage from what i could tell. Just one singular tiny dot about the size of a sand particle. I was able to trade that phone in in perfect condition thanks to my case☝️. I didnt have the extremly bulky one either, i had the one thats like in between bulky

  What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?

  My phone (iPhone 14) got thrown so hard against an object, I was sure it was toast. It didn’t even have a scratch due to my trusty Otterbox. I’m a klutz, so they have a customer for life. It’s definitely saved my butt multiple times.

  I have different ones I’ve picked-up over the years, each has a specific purpose; especially the coffee cups. I learned years ago to not cross contaminate between coffee and non-coffee receptacles. * Water cup: 30oz Yeti tumbler (free à la work) * Coffee cup: 20oz Otterbox tumbler (free à la a buddy who used to own my local outfitter). My backup is a 14oz freebie traveler mug from an activity I’ve been helping run since 2014 (cup is from 2015). * Ice tea cup: 20oz insulated Bubba tumbler * Water bottle: Nalgene (I cycle two — 2002 Philmont one, “normal” one I picked-up before hiking Sandia Peak in 2018) and a Guyot Designs 24oz stainless water bottle (gotten around 2012)

  Best super rugged case for new S25 Plus blue collar owner

  I got one of the OtterBox cases that's two piece. Can't remember the model. But it's got a plastic inner case and the. A rubber layer that goes on the outside. It's pretty bomber. I also got a Note Ize lanyard so I can clip it to things and drop it less!

  OtterBoxes are cheap af on Amazon right now. I just got one for my pixel 9 pro for $26.  I've never had a premium phone case before.  It's so much nicer than the cheaper ones. You can feel and see it. I used to think it was all hype but I was very wrong.

  Is Otterbox still the default phone case?

  So I've only used cheapish cases since my first smartphones. I am using my first OtterBox because it was on sale on Amazon; The quality is immediately apparent. It's just much more nicely. Engineered And with better materials. I have the OtterBox symmetry for the pixel 9 pro XL

  OTTERBOX Warranty is a total ripoff. Buyer beware dont buy OTTERBOX

  I’ve messaged them whenever I’ve had a problem and gotten a new case with 0 issues. The price you paid for shipping is less than an insurance deductible and certainly less then the damage you would have caused to your phone without.

  What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?

  I'm a side sleeper with a bad back. I have a cheap foam pillow that goes between my knees at night, if you look up knee pillows you'll see what I'm talking about. It helps keep my spine aligned at night and has cut down on my back pain. I have to replace it every 8 months or so, but it saves me from so much discomfort.  I have a little iced coffee maker I got  on black friday special at Walmart, maybe 5 years ago? I paid $15 for it. It's still chugging away after years of constant use. It makes the perfect cup of iced coffee, and (mostly) keeps me away from hitting up the local Dunkin'.  A pop socket, good phone case, and OtterBox screen protectors. I'm clumsy AF to begin with, plus I have carpal tunnel... so I struggle to hold things sometimes. After many smashed phone screens and a few phones that fell from my hands to their death, I finally invested in a system that keeps my phone intact.

  iPhone Case Recommendations

  Been a fan of Otterbox since the original iPhone. Though never the fully encased Defenders. Too bulky. Commuters and Symmeyry have provided great protection and less bulk. In recent years, they haven’t been lasting more to an a year where the plastic is very thin or the silicone wears out. Warranty is pretty easy, but free replacement doesn’t make up for all the hassle. I switched to the Ghostek Aluminum case and have been very pleased. It isn’t water proof/resistant, but most phones are water resistant these days.

  What brand will you never buy again?

  Glad I'm holding onto my 2019 Galaxy S10+! I've killed something like six or seven Otterbox Defender holsters, but the only reason I had to replace my Defender case is because I wore out the buttons for volume and on/off.  Still going strong. 🤞🤞🤞

  3 years for my Iphone 12 and countless times the OtterBox saved it. It's ugly, magnet is not that great but it still works like a charm. It costed me like 25-30 bucks at the time(white with "green"(more like beige/dark green Symmetry case)

  I suggest an otterbox defender pro case and the joto waterproof pouch to go with it if they fit together because it should allow you to use the phones screen with it but if it doesn't then it's still good as a waterproofing option.   I did open my charging port a lot as well and it took a while to come off but I agree it did still come off and I do see how the rubber could come off pretty easily but the rubber is the outside part meant to soften the blow to the inner parts keeping it in place so I think in the long run otterbox will protect better against drops especially drops onto the front screen with the belt grip and the warranty lasts pretty long as well for newer models so it's easily replaceable. If they don't give you a new one for it then that's not very good but I don't see a better option for protecting the phone out there in the same way, there needs to be more clip on accessories for extra protection on the back and front. I did drop my phone out of my pocket while skateboarding full send onto it's front with the belt clip on and there was zero scratch so do with that what you will.

  Highly durable phone case?

  It's literally a small thread that's been posted for a long time now. It's really not that hard to type out a comment, and no I do not work for otterbox. I'm not too sure what's fishy about this whole situation considering it's a reddit thread for buy it for life where people want to know what's the closest they can get to buying something that will last them the longest and when someone does get something long lasting, then what's so wrong about that? Again if I knew about other phone cases having this many parts to their actual base case for protection as well as the belt clip that can handle the screen and the back when needed then I would love to check that out, but as of right now my otterbox case has literally saved my phone with many other people saying its also done them pretty well in harsh scenarios so it's really not all that suspicious.

  Yes. My one otterbox case let my phone last over three years. I was a clutz. That thing seen hell. Would have been more, but I upgraded cause I didnt want the tarriffs to hit and then my phone to not work.

  I actually didn't believe a case can serve as actual phone protector. During my workshop training in school which was metal works, a metal fell on my bag during one of the trainings and my phone was inside. I was scared it had broken already but thanks to the otterbox case. Spending to get an otter case for my phone was actually worth it. Right now I'm thinking of getting them in bulk from probably aliexpress or Alibaba to resell to construction and factory workers. Cool business idea… lol.

  Which one is better? Used to use Otterbox Defenders.

  I've been using them as my go-to case for 8+ years now on 3 different phones. The finish on the back seems to wear off and scratch around 3-4 years but otherwise they will pretty much last forever.

  I’d probably go with the Otterbox for that use. I had a phone in a Defender case years back. I sat it on top of my car at midnight, forgot it and drove home. I went out looking for it early the next day and found it on the busy road in front of my office in the gutter. It had apparently been driven over. The case was cracked but the phone was fine. The Defender is too bulky for me, but it’s been damn tough in my experience.

  Quite a lot seems like an understatement. I'm on my second Motorola and just got the Otterbox commuter case replaced under warranty. The last drop cracked the hard outer cover. OP is unlucky, outside with rocks a lot or extremely clumsy.

  I have kept my last two phones for 4+ years and other than battery, physical connections/buttons are the most likely things to wear out. My last phones USB C port went out, so this time around I'm mostly doing wireless charging to save to save the USB port some wear. I also use Nova Launcher and have a screen off gesture set, this with the double tap to wake saves the power button a lot of wear.

  I left my phone on the roof in an otter box defender and watched it bounce down the highway, got ran over multiple times, picked it up - fine. I’m ride or die for them now baby. Worked field construction as an inspector for 10 years, was an inspector so way way way less normal wear and tear for a laborer but still had several drops, nics, sprays and the like and I was super happy with it. Still have a defended now that I’m an email operator.

  I've used Otterbox on 2 phones (1 current w/ Defender, 1 retired). I don't put the current one through heavy use, but aside from the ports being hard to use because the covers are hard to pull back, i love the extra protection. A vast improvement over my previous protection. The retired one saw heavy use and a few falls, and the protector took the brunt of it all. It lasted until I switched to a new phone (several years).

  I'm rocking an S10+ from 2019. The only reason it's still functioning is the Otterbox defender case. It's lost the pop socket on the back and the rubber plugs for the ports, but its kept my phone safe and my screen has never cracked. Lint and grit from my pockets have done more damage to this phone than dropping it more times than I count. I kinda want a new phone, but now I feel like I need to see how far I can ride this phone and case.

  My wife had her phone slip out of her thigh pocket on a high speed corkscrew during a rollercoaster ride. That thing got launched quite a ways. Someone found it and turned it in. Thanks to the otterbox, it only had some damage to the box, but the phone was fine.

  As someone who has worked at a phone store for years, I have sold many phone cases and seen MANY phone cases come back after years of use and abuse. The Otterbox Defender is an excellent case! The port covers are great, and (as long as you always keep it on) you should have very little problem with any dirt or dust intrusion. The drop protection is also very good. Some cases will provide equivalent protection (like Pelican's heavy-duty line), but Otterbox is a very high performer for its price. An equivalent will only save you like $10 at most. As for buying it for life, that depends. I've found that a lot of the Defender cases will have their rubber shell stretch and deform. The port covers are also liable to fall off with repeated use. Unfortunately, nothing really to be done about the port cover falling off, but I've had better luck with integrated rubber/plastic cases like the Pelican equivalent. Not to sound like a Pelican shill, it was just the only other nice heavy-duty case we stocked. I'm sure other brands make similar products as well. Just make sure they offer a similar lifetime warranty - $8-$10 for shipping you a new case after the port cover snaps off is well worth.

  I’ve used the commuter, the Symmetry, and the defender. The defender is the best by a long shot. My only beef is that it is so thick it renders halo lock useless but i got the one with the halo lock backing and it improves it a bit. Still sucks to charge with iq though.

  I have a Defender on my phone. I work with dogs and end up having my phone knocked out of my hand onto concrete 5-10 times per week. I had to replace the case after about a year and a few months because the corner cracked. A new case is about $20, but my phone is still pristine. Considering just the deductible on a repair is $50, it's a no brainer.  I had a different case on my previous phone and the screen shattered within a week. I won't use anything but OtterBox now

  Mine started finally falling apart after... idk how long. Over a year. Maybe 2? The port cover was almost completely torn off, so I cut it the rest of the way off. Still mostly covered, and saved from many drops.

  I have a mixed opinion. The port cover broke off after about 1.75 years. I think this is due to the fact that I charge it wired, so the tab was being stressed open every night. At 2 years the rubber shell has started to crack around the front where it meets up with the plastic case.  That being said, this phone has taken a lot of impacts and is totally fine. In essence, the case is doing its job very well, just don't expect it to last for the lifetime of the phone if you keep your phone for more than 3 years.

  So I have a medical condition that can cause unintentional muscle spasms and contractions, meaning sometimes I will randomly and with no warning yeet whatever is in my hand across the room. Can't control it. Oftentimes, it's my phone that's in my hand when a spasm hits. I had an OtterBox Defender on my previous phone, and it literally kept my phone safe for *a decade.* I only replaced that phone when the charge port finally gave out. Went to take off the case to get whatever little value I could as a trade in, and the only damage to it after a decade of being thrown at walls, floors, concrete poles, sidewalks, bodies of water... Was a tiny little crack right at the edge where the side meets the screen. It was so small you couldn't even see it with the case on. Immediately got a Defender for my new phone.

  I like mine, and have used them on various phones I've owned, both in the past, and now. Unfortunately, like many other things, they aren't as good these days as they used to be. My Otterbox Defender just ripped its rubber edge recently. That's after already buying a replacement because I shattered the interior hard plastic case. I'm not that rough on my phones, either. They just seem more brittle to me than they used to be.

  Negative feedback? From who? For what? I've dropped several different phones in mosh pits on several occasions, even had them get kicked across the room. Im clumsy AF and drop it constantly. Even since they ditched the screen protectors Ive never had a broken phone. These things are tanky af and that's the entire point.

  Don't know the model names but for the 8 years I used my S9 I had 2 otterbox cases. I eroded the rubber volume buttons on the first one. I now use an S24 (highest trim forgot the name), but the case is so big that it fucks my jeans pocket. Very great case though

  I put the commuter on my kids phone, iPhone 13 mini on the second kid, still kickin. I had one years ago and it kept my phone safe. The defender is a little overkill for me with the screen being covered. Over time the screen cover will show wear but it’s probably (about) the best you are going to get protection wise imo.

  Also in construction, have used Otterbox Defenders for the last 6.5 years because the company pays for them. They are bulky which is preferable (easier to hold onto), and they are very grippy. Phone stays clean, is still unscratched, been dropped several times. The skin that's on now has gotten loose but that's because I have taken it off a lot. The port covers are nice, but the speakers are still exposed so you do have to clean those regularly. I've had this case about a year since I got my new phone, the last case I had about 4 years. BIFL is not really applicable since you'll get new phones, but an Otterbox will last the life of your phone.

  I am happy with my otterbox defender. I would guess I drop my phone as much as the next guy and no issues. The reason I stick with Otterbox is the warranty. I imagine most brands protect your phone. When my rubber tabs were falling off I called, got someone right away, and had the replacement in less than a week. In the age of auto response and chat bots it’s nice to support a company that stands behind their product.

  Also in construction and I've had my pixel 7 in a defender since I bought it nearly two years ago. Phone is starting to shit out but the case is going strong, in just the last week or so the charging port cover has started tearing off but I use it at least once a day and have never wirelessly charged. This isn't my first defender and I'm always impressed. The people who manage to break these things shouldn't be trusted with anything more delicate than a Nokia.

So far I have yet to lose a single phone encased in an Otterbox Defender. It's the only one that holds up to the bumps and drops of ROUGH carry. (I'm clumsy and bump into things a LOT. LOL)

  I’ve had 2 otter box cases for my current & previous iPhones. I got it after moving into an apartment with stone tile floors. My AppleTV remote shattered with one drop. I’ve dropped my phone(s) numerous times, no damage. I was annoyed my current otterbox case didnt have a screen protector but the one I got paid for itself many times over.

  I had a defender many years ago, it was quite badass. dropped down to a commuter the next phone, been using one of those ever since. And I'd add that I'm clumsy AF. Commuter will suit your needs just fine, unless maybe you're dropping bricks on it.

  The greatest purchase I ever made in my life Had it for about 10 years Also protected my phone amazingly well despite many drops Also idk if they still do it or not, but like 8 years ago , otterbox had this situation where, if your case ever had wear and tear and you could prove it, they would replace your case for free So i called them one time every 11 months and got it replaced for free every time, every year, for like 4 years straight with no issues Super easy to do and amazing customer service Now having said all that i am just a regular guy with office jobs So idk about dropping it from a roof idk how that would go

  I drop my phone A LOT! I’ve primarily used otter boxes for cases for over a decade. All cases have lasted longer than my phones. I have not had a problem with my cases breaking. My current otter box case has survived 10ft drops while doing things on the ladder multiple times.

  The charging port covers don’t last. The screen cover does eventually loose some of its seal, around the bezel, so water from a splash can leak in onto the screen. Those minor annoyances aside, my phone is unscratched and it’s 7 years old. I have replaced the case 3 times, the screen protector does get scratched.

  I have an S21 with a Defender and an amFilm screen protector. I do landscape and nursery work. They work pretty well together. I've had Defenders since the Atrix 2. It's the best case I've found for my work. I do miss all of the protection the old school LifeProof case offered. My silver S8 is mint after 4 years of use. Put the stickers back in the box dammit!

  Defenders definitely don’t fall apart. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve had, on both iphones and ipads. The port covers sometimes wear out after two or three years—the little rubber tabs fall off. That doesn’t seem to be as bad as it used to be, and it was never a terrible problem. Older versions of the Defender incorporated a screen cover, which really diminished the ergonomics of the touch screen. They no longer include that screen cover, but the screen remains the most vulnerable part of the phone. Most people add a screen protector, which adds cost. I think you’ll be out about $75 if you buy both a Defender and an Otterbox screen protector. In my estimation, it’s too much money, particularly given the abysmal lack of colors or decorative patterns offered, especially for bigger, older phones. They know customers need the screen protector, and I’ve never seen them offer a package deal or anything. I buy Otterbox, because i appreciate having robust protection. Replacing screens is a huge pain and expensive. The company has improved their design significantly over the years. The current Defender is sleek compared to the chonky case they offered a few years ago. Nonetheless, I view it as an undesirable necessity purchase. The Defender nearly ruins the aesthetics of the device, typically offers nothing to make the purchase more attractive—such a designs or customization, and costs more than seems reasonable. I like their quality, but always grit my teeth buying them. Otterbox rarely has promotions or sales, if ever.

  My phone will never be in anything other than a defender. I've dropped my phone 20 ft onto deck plate nonskid, 15ft onto concrete, and dozens of times from hand height onto various surfaces. Never seen a single crack in any phone. The lack of included screen protector the last few years has been very annoying, though.

  I used OtterBox Defender for almost all of my phones I have had. I found that they do eventually break, but the softer plastic on the outer of the case is what makes them last so long. I had the commuter once and it lasted about a week. I drop my phone a lot.

Gets dropped on concrete every day and has survived a handful of twenty foot drops into packed dirt. For what it's worth I've used otterbox with every phone I've ever had and have only ever had one fall apart on me, which was after about four or five years of heavy use

  I’m currently using a quad lock but I’ve usually had the otterbox. My iPhone 3GS fell out of my pocket while 20’ up a ladder and landed face down. I don’t bother to go back down because I figured it was toast. I finished the job, went back down grab the phone not a scratch have been an OtterBox fan ever since. The only reason I’m currently using a quad lock is it works better on my motorcycle. But the twist lock is a royal PITA to line up and lock, I use the mag lock in the car and it’s fine.

  I have had good success with them but I am not particularly hard on my phone. I typically would use the warranty for a fresh one after a year and a half or so because I keep the phones 3-4 years. I prefer them because of the rubbery grip and I expect rubber to wear down over time. The warranty allows you to replace for the price of shipping so I consider it fair.

  Is Otterbox still the default phone case?

  I have four kids and my phone is dropped often and has flown through the air more times than I can count. No damage whatsoever! My OB Defender case is on a Google Pixel 3A going on 5-6 years old. My previous phone also had an OB Defender case and that one also lasted 5 or more years. The port tabs do tend to eventually tear off but it hasn't been an issue. My husband dropped his phone (also OB Defender) in a freezing slushy puddle of water and didn't realize it for two hours. We retrieved the phone (it had shut down) and let it dry out overnight before attempting to reboot.  It WORKED after spending two hours in water. I personally think the case helped. The tabs over his ports had torn off too but I think the case generally slowed the water down. I'm here reading because OB sadly doesn't have a Defender case for the Pixel 9A. Not sure if they will but I need a case ASAP. Our household is to active with young kids to skip a rugged case. I'm leaning towards Spigeon (sp?).

  Anything with an affixed battery. Batteries, break down overtime, they just can't be BIFL. I personally, don't know what you are doing to your phones, but invest in a good case, like an otterbox, and a scream protector, and my phones last years. I trade them in and they look fine.

  Not really. Especially since it’s become a marketing gimmick these days. My Darn Tough socks go missing before I can mail them back in. That being said, Otterbox sent me a new case for only shipping cost just because the fillip broke for my case. Well worth the initial cost, to know my phone will be protected always - only time it came out of the case, I dropped it and shattered the screen. So…. Life of the phone here though, not my life. So…4 years on the far side. Still worth it! But other things, not so much. Pots and pans? There’s a reason people get new ones (even if it’s just cosmetics - burnt bottoms don’t look good). Backpack? Ha! (Tbf, that’s on me not knowing Jansport had a warranty system to start with, but still, it lasted under 3 months before the stitching started popping). Socks, as I said, they go missing (great quality though, but I can buy a dozen pairs for the price of the single pair of DTs).

  Highly durable phone case?

  I have had an otterbox defender case on my phones for as long as I can remember. They have a great 7-year warranty program. Which is longer than most people typically keep a phone before upgrading. I have used the Otterbox warranty several times. Just call Otterbox, and they will walk you through getting a brand new case. I have noticed It doesn't matter where you bought the case, whether it was from any retail store or from Otterbox online. There is around a $7 charge for shipping. The only downside to the warranty is they dont always have all the original color options left in stock for older models. If you dont mind having a black case you will be good to go for 7 years. Most of the time, they have not even asked for the old phone case to be sent back. There is possibly just an emailed picture required if anything at all. So if all 3 pieces of the defender case are not totally destroyed, you can always mix and match with the color options like building with legos. Just a helpful tip. Someone told me about the easy warranty process around 7 years ago, and I have been utilizing it ever since. I have received at least 5 cases under warranty so far.
