  I never want to buy cookware again

  Not at all. For skillets, go for allclad, madein, misen, or calphalon. Maybe even consider carbon steel (have one from oxo I love). For a saucepan, I have a 3qt calohalon saucier that they don’t make anymore, but I have made in’s 2 qt saucier, I imagine they’re 3 qt is great too.

  I never want to buy cookware again

  There’s no such thing as BIFL non stick. Stainless steel cast iron and carbon steel will last you forever but all of them have trade offs. SS is the easiest to keep but sticks the most. If you learn how to cook with it that can be mitigated but it wont perform like a true non stick. Cast iron and carbon steel form a seasoning that makes it stick less but they are heavy and have to be dried on the stove and cleaned without soap. Truthfully all 3 are worth owning. My suggestion is 1-2 stainless pans (ideally a 12 in all clad or madein and either a large sautee pan or a 10 in fry pan depending on what you cook) then either a cast iron (lodge) or carbon steel (lots of options but pricier and lighter - de buyer or Misen if you want budget). Those 3 pans will last you forever. I’d also get stainless pots in the sizes you want - my most used are a large stock pot and 3 quart saucier. But after those BIFL items - ide still buy at least 1 non stick pan that you need to throw out roughly every 3 years. Most of them perform the same. I’d just grab an oxo Tramontina or whatever is rated high on Amazon in the 50 dollar range. There’s just tasks that can’t be easily accomplished on another type of pan like an easy omelette, something you don’t want oil on, or a quick cleanup easy weeknight meal.

  Can opener that lasts??

  I bought the "OXO Good Grips Smooth Edge Can Opener" many years ago because it leaves no sharp edges. Hated it at first until I got used to it. The thing doesn't seem that solid, but it works way better than any other can opener I've ever used as long as the can is still round, and it given no signs of wear or loss in effectiveness.

  No... Definately no. The old Swing-a-Way can openers were terrific, but the *currently made ones* from China are **junk**.  I would go with an oxo brand, or maybe a KitchenAid branded one... They are about as good as you will find these days. Of course, you could try to find a used Swing-a-Way from when they were USA made, those were great.

  What are the Best Glass Food Storage Containers Available Now? Recommendation

  I have a set of 16 Glasslock, four Pyrex, and two OXO containers. We don't microwave any of the lids, so I can't speak to that, but we microwave the containers themselves. The Pyrex are the weakest of the bunch, to be honest. The containers are fine for thermal shock, and they nest (we have round ones) but they're nowhere near a tight enough seal for lunches, and the lids warp easily in the dishwasher. The OXO are our favorites. Big cushy gasket that's easy to remove and wash, sturdy containers, super tight seal, easy locking. We only have the really big ones in this size but if I were buying new ones I'd buy more of this brand. Con: I accidentally punctured a gasket on one, which is always a risk, and it was impossible to buy just a replacement gasket. I had to buy a whole new container. The Glasslock are a very solid option. They stack nicely for storage, I haven't broken one in 4-5 years, and they have a very solid seal. We regularly microwave them straight from the fridge, and sometimes we put them in the oven as well, and have had no issues. The only cons I have are a little nitpicky: the gaskets are thin (although they do the job well) and hard to get out, so it's easy to accidentally damage them when prying them out. Also, if you get any food on the gasket or rim, you have to fully wipe the whole gasket track or else some of the food might squish onto the outside when you open it. It's not a leak, but it's something to be careful of. Very minor annoyance, though, and they have worked great for us as our main storage set. Finally, the ears can be hard to lock down and require a shocking amount of grip strength if the lid isn't perfectly aligned. Both the OXO and the Glasslock can be dishwashed, and we regularly do, but we remove all gaskets before dishwashing and hand wash those. Lids go in the top rack of the dishwasher only and have yet to show any signs of aging. We will also frequently handwash the lids and gaskets, so they don't exclusively go in the dishwasher. If you're asking for a gasket that "won't get gross" without being removed from the lid for washing, I have no idea where to point you. The OXO ones are far and away the easiest to remove and reinstall the gasket, though.

  My coffee maker needs replacement - but is Moccamaster more hype than BIFL?

  We had one in an office I worked in. So we made probably 3-4 pots per day. It was still going strong 6-7 years later when I left. I wouldn’t exactly say they are repairable, but they do sell some replacement parts. That said, I got an Oxo 8-Cup Coffee maker for home because they’re a lot cheaper for one. It’s Specialty Coffee Association certified. It has a thermal carafe and no hot plate. So it makes a good cup of coffee and doesn’t burn it. I can’t tell you if it’s BIFL, but I’ve had it for a couple of years and would recommend it. Now for grinders you can’t beat the repair support for Baratza grinders. They repair them for you for a set price or you can order all the parts yourself. (Outside the US the shipping kills you to have them repair it though).

  if you just want hot, ready, not burnt at 5am, you don’t need to spend breville money unless you’re super picky. i’ve had good luck with mid-tier [programmable machines](https://deo9gr5ha90bn.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO1487) that actually hit decent temps and don’t nuke the pot. as in things like the bonavita 8-cup, oxo 8 or 9 cup or even the cuisinart perfecTemp line. Also one underrated thing: thermal carafe > hot plate. that’s usually where the burnt coffee feeling comes from. once i switched to thermal, even cheap beans tasted fine for mornings.

  We have one of these! It's really good and I think it might outlive me. I bought a similar one for myself, its got a longer handle and has a cradle that cleans fur out of it (Oxo Good Grips Furlifter). I've had it for a few years now and its still holding up. I'm not sure if it qualifies for BIFL quality but as someone with two dogs and a cat it's worked real well so far.

  I got the oxo furniture lint roller back in 2020 and it’s works great! It’s the same material as this but has an inert that removes all the hair for you and collects at the bottom! It’s one of my daily use items! lol

  Looking for real PYREX

  The good Pyrex was borosilicate. Look for that. I'm pretty sure all Oxo's glass stuff is borosilicate. And I love that brand in general anyways. I think IKEA 365 glass is borosilicate, but I'm not sure. When I lived in Texas, the HEB brand glassware was borosilicate.

  Oxo makes a 4 tablespoon measuring cup. It's the cutest thing and so useful. So much easier to pour into a cup as opposed to holding on to a shaking spoon and trying to pour out only so much. It comes in plastic and stainless steel.

  I really recommend the OXO gadget then; it's just as easy as the machine. Put in coffee, pour in hot water, walk away for 5 minutes. I even got a gooseneck kettle because it looks cute on the counter.

  I thumbed my nose at all machines and got a small electric kettle and an OXO single mug pourover. It has a little "tank" on top so you don't have to stand there babying the pour. Perfect every time and it was only like $15.

  Need a quality coffee maker

  I have one, got it earlier this year after looking into upgrading. Happy with it. It makes better coffee than our old $70 built-in whole bean slicer one. And yes, slicer, the cheap blade coffee grinders aren't that good. Technivorm did have a bit of a sale recently for black Friday, so they do 'go on sale.' Coffee quality makes a difference too, whole bean with a good burr grinder is going to be fresher than pre ground, and that generally improves taste. We got an oxo conical burr grinder, it's a lot more consistent than blade grinders. That's under $100, you can certainly spend more. I guess it's not a need, you can use pre ground for a while and get a grinder later. But any pursuit of good coffee will lead to fresh ground from while beans. The last piece of the puzzle is maintenance/cleaning. You want a descaler (removes mineral build up) and a cleaner (removes oils). And do it on a regular cycle. Techniworm recommends every ~3 months. Dirty coffee machines will negatively impact flavor. It's not hard, just amounts to running several rounds of water through the machine.

  OXO also has excellent customer support. I've reached out to them asking if I can buy replacement parts for kitchen tools far out of warranty and they just sent me new ones for free no questions asked. I'll always pay a little extra for them because I know even if they do break or wear out prematurely, they'll make good on it.

  Kitchen scissors? EU brands

  I don’t think it’s a European brand but I swear by OXO goodgrips kitchen and herb scissors. Currently £13 on amazon. Over 12.3K reviews. I have two pairs. One pair is over a decade old. Tool-less easy disassemble for cleaning. Micro-serrated blades slice through everything I throw at them. Have never sharpened them though I think they’d be easy enough to sharpen if I wanted to, with the right kind of sharpener.

  You need the opposite for a can opener and potato masher though. I was going through the cheapo can openers every few months. I finally bought a $25 OXO can opener and it's working perfectly 8 years later. Same with the masher, get one that's built like a tank otherwise it'll just bend up on you over time.

  SAFE alternative to Bunn MyCafe Coffee Maker?

  I have had this same model (MCU) since at least 2016, using it daily. I had this issue happen like 3 years in and this is what I do now: 1) I make sure that pop out screen is cleaned with soap at least weekly with dawn. I mostly rinsed it originally. And about every two years I call Bunn and have them mail me a replacement. 2) I unscrew the sprayer (it is meant to be easily taken apart) every so often and I make sure to clean that rubber gasket real well. I also take the spray head that pops off and I make sure none of the holes are clogged with calcium buildup. I have Bunn send me a replacement gasket when they send that replacement screen. After having started this routine, I have never experienced another explosion. Also, Bunn has never charged me for these parts. For beans, I use an Oxo burr grinder. The ones that are around $100. The grind is always set to 7. As you already know, it makes a dang good cup of coffee. I was determined to keep it going. It’s been running like a champ ever since, and explosion free. I hope whatever you decide on has you enjoying a great coffee again soon.

  Healthy but easy-to-use/maintain Pans to replace non-stick (for my cooking style) ?

  **1/2** **First**, let me commend you for the honest and detailed question. Too many such posts on Reddit are lacking in detail (and too many responses on Reddit are basically "buy what I bought!"). I'll respond in detail as well. **Second**, I want to caution you against looking for a unicorn. You clearly are used to non-stick cooking, and you want to continue that, but you want to stop using unhealthy plastics (commendible) and don't want a learning curve. I'll say right now: All the best solutions involve SOME learning curve, but it's sooo worth it **I own** non-stick PFTE-coated pans, stainless-clad pans, carbon steel pans, cast iron, enamel-coated cast iron, and additionally have experience on everything from anodized to pressure-cast aluminum. **Here's my advice**: **Non-stick coated pans**: You are used to them, and you probably should keep one, at least for a while. Please get a new one that hasn't been abused, and get a simple, quality inexpensive skillet like the Tramontina Pro for under $30, or maybe an Oxo. It's your fall-back as you get up that learning curve with other pans, and there may always be things like dumplings that you still use it for. **Carbon Steel**: This is the surface that will give you the high-heat nonstick experience that you are looking for with home fries, stir-fries, pan-fried noodles, etc., *once the pan is well-seasoned*. That can take a while. Pre-seasoned pans are fine, but still, it takes time to get it consistently slippery. Somebody else recommended Strata, and that's a fine choice for a carbon steel skillet -- lightweight, great performance, relatively easy to maintain (Strata is a patented stainless-clad carbon steel pan -- stainless on the outside and the handle, carbon steel cooking surface). Weight matters a lot with carbon steel. Thin pans are VERY responsive. Thicker pans are better at heat retention. Strata is a lighter pan that performs above its weight. **The drawbacks**: There is absolutely 100% a learning curve. You have to understand seasoning. You don't clean them like other pansIf you leave them out wet, they rust. And if you cook acidic foods in them, it will damage the seasoning and you'll have to do more to maintain/restore the seasoning. **The benefits**: Hands-down there is nothing better for things like fried rice and pan-fried noodles. And once you get the hang of it, you realize that they are the easiest pans in the world to maintain and keep clean. It's just a matter of learning and habit. I have a chainmail dishcloth. My final step when cooking with carbon steel is to toss some water in the hot pan, then toss in the dishcloth and rub it around with a pair of tongs as the water sizzles. I then dump out the water and rinse the hot pan, and put it back on the hot burner again to burn off any remaining water. That. is. it. I do all this before I serve the food. After the meal I just toss the pan back in the cabinet. If you have a well-seasoned pan, you don't need to do anything else like rub oil on it regularly. And they are indestructible.

  Looking for a pepper grinder that doesn’t leave a mess (and won’t fall apart in a year)

  OXO redial pepper grinder. It has a crank you can turn, so it's basically effortless. The bottom cap keeps things from getting messy, and I've been using mine for about a decade.   I agree. My original version (more squat and actually more daring, designed by Michael Graves) lasted me more than twenty years. Rustproof, everlasting ceramic burrs, a built in filling chute, and a crank that lets you lay down a continuous stream of ground pepper (instead of the little twist, twist, twist you do with regular grinders). Also better for people with decreased grip strength, because the action uses your arms (making kitchen tools for people with arthritis and the like was OXO's original focus). It comes with a lid to collect stray pepper when you set it down.

  Which type of pan is the BIFL king?

  Interesting! Which one did you get? We have the OXO carbon steel pan and it's pretty lightweight. I had trouble lifting even the Lodge cast iron with both hands, for context, and I use a single hand to lift and pour the OXO with food in it. It's helped me in cooking to be tremendously more efficient. I find some people just don't know how to take care of it sometimes, similar to the cast iron, so they go back to nonstick pans unfortunately. But agree it's so effortless when you get it!

  Do you drink coffee? I've been eyeing the oxo rapid brewer (like aero press but no paper filter) and I love my zojirushi coffee thermos. And then I don't know after that. Maybe the oxo manual coffee grinder? Maybe a little much if you aren't a coffee snob, or are traveling in a place that has good coffee, but I find having a way to make my own not terrible coffee is wonderful for traveling.

  Glasslock or OXO Smart Seal have held up best for me. The lids actually stay tight after years and they don’t stain or warp like plastic. I’d skip stoneware since it’s too heavy and chips easily compared to tempered glass.

  What's the best cookware you've ever had?

  Any tefalon or ceramic item will need replaced - typically in 2-5 years. It’s fine to do this but I wouldn’t consider any non stick item as BIFL. Not every item has to last a lifetime. But if you want a BIFL item look to cast iron and carbon steel for non stick like cooking, and stainless steel for ease of care. I personally own a nonstick fry pan from oxo - cheap enough that I don’t mind tossing it after 3 years, a cast iron skillet from lodge, a carbon steel wok and fry pan from Madein (gifts but I like them), and several D3 and D5 stainless from all clad. The stainless probably does 90% of the cooking with cast iron and carbon steel coming out to sear steaks and non stick for omelettes and delicate stuff

  Deli containers. No, they don't let forever, but plenty come into my life for free via takeout and groceries. They stack great, both empty and full. They have interchangeable lids. They're microwavable. They work in the freezer, though some brands better than others. Just be aware they get brittle when frozen and crack if dropped. Mason jars + the mason vacuum sealer for long term fridge and dry storage (bulk spices, breadcrumbs, etc). A few "good jars" and "good bottles" that I've kept over the years, that can withstand the dishwasher and microwave. A couple OXO 8-cup "Smart Seal" glass containers, but those could be any brand.

  Carbon Steel, Cast Iron, Stainless Steel are all gonna last a lifetime. Dutch Ovens and enameled pans also last long, but the enamel can chip. The brand almost doesn’t matter in terms of longevity. Both a cheap lodge and an expensive smithey would last a lifetime. My go to pan is my 10 inch OXO Carbon Steel pan. It’s lighter compared to cast iron and can be nonstick with technique and enough oil. I would also highly recommend getting a fish spatula.

  This combined 2 of my lists so there might be duplicates. I teach old fashioned skills so my stuff has to be able to take damage. Cast iron Dutch oven. For baking alone it is worth it. Cast aluminum/enamel is a second buy. Not as useful as the cast iron but good for heavy soups and stews. Also much lighter if you have a disability. Cast iron skillet set. Mine are mostly over 50 years old. 9 inch and a 7 inch are great. Larger ones for a larger family. I bought mine so used. Stainless steel skillet. Larger with a heavy bottom. Being stainless it can go into the oven just fine. I got mine used and it is great for stir frying and making sauces. Double sided cast iron griddle. Great to go over multiple burners on the stove and it can also go over a BBQ grill. Kitchen Aid mixer. I bought mine used and it is a late 1960s model. They are easy to repair. Stainless steel mixing bowl set with lids. Melamine would also work, just be careful of them around heat, they can crack. This is just me -- a dual burner propane camp stove. Because they fold and come inside, they last for decades. Cheaper than a BBQ grill, it will allow you to cook outside at any time. It will allow you to cook in a power outage also. Just remember if you use it inside, make sure you have a window cracked open an inch. They are also great for tailgating, picnics and traveling. If you actually cook, bake and use your kitchen, get a stainless steel pot set. If they nest -even better. The larger (deeper) ones can even be used for high acid canning like jams and jellies. Also get stainless baking pans. Glass storage set with lids so you aren't buying plastic over and over just to be able to stick leftovers in your fridge. A good set of kitchen towels to use instead of paper towels. If you wipe up water, just hang them to dry, not throwing them awake like paper. Stainless steel *nesting* mixing bowls with tight fitting lids. At least a set of 5 bowls. Preferably a set of 7 bowls with lids. They can be used for refrigerator storage as well as mixing. Cast iron Dutch oven with lid - 6 quart Cast iron skillet, size 8 or size 10. Too much larger and they are too heavy to lift when full. Cast iron bread/loaf pan. For everything from meatloaf, quick breads to bread. Heavy aluminum baking sheet set- the insulated kind. Not non-stick. (Use silpats and cupcake liners and parchment paper instead of non-stick garbage) Heavy aluminum rectangle/square cake/brownie pan set with slide on lids. 6"/8"/10" round pie pan set or just start with size 9. The 10" should ideally be a deep dish with a lid. Great for shepherds pie and chicken pot pie. Aldi's bread boule baking set. So much less expensive than everything else. It is worth the wait until it comes back on sale. Universal lid set, because you will never find the right one when you need it. Silicone ones last a long time unless you put it on/in a too hot stove. They are a lot easier to store than the steel sets. But get the set that fits you. Stainless steel, heavy bottomed 10 inch skillet with tall sides (taller than the cast iron at least). With steamer insert if possible. This is mainly for tomato based soups and pasta and things that would be too heavy for the cast iron 6-8 quart heavy bottomed stock pot with lid. Doubles as a stainless steel Dutch oven. If you can't get heavy bottom pans, get a heat diffuser to use under your pans. Stainless steel strainer/colander Sieve - set of 3 Collapsible stainless steel shredder/slicer/chopper. OXO brand is the best but it doesn't collapse. Stainless steel, restaurant quality utensil set with long handles Wooden spoon set with the proper instructions on how they need to be oiled and waxed. Because no one ever does and it shows. They can last a lifetime if properly cared for. Wooden rolling pins. One small one, 12 inches wide, one wider one, 20-25 inches wide with pastry rollers for the ends. Don't bother with fancy handles that get loose, just get the straight ones without handles. Just watch *pasta grannies* on YouTube. Manual stainless steel pasta machine/roller. Stainless steel 12-36 hole ravioli cutter. Stainless steel ring cookie/biscuit cutter. The kind with concentric rings from 5 inches down to 1 inch. Kitchen-aid mixer. Many of the attachments like the meat grinder are... lower quality than stand-alone tools. They just aren't built for heavy duty use. And they can overheat easily. All American pressure canner. It can also be used for water bath canning. Mine is from 1939. Food processor/blender. Don't know what one is BIFL these days. Mom's Cuisinart lasted 35 years. Carbon steel knife set with sharpener and hone (paring knife, chef knife, bread knife, carving knife, that's all you need) Stainless steel peeler/julienne

  I am one of those people who absolutely loves my OXO salad spinner and can’t live without it. I don’t even eat that many salads but I’m always using it to wash and dry all kinds of fruits, veggies (especially leeks!), greens, and herbs (I hate wet herbs and I hate trying to dry them with a towel), plus I use it to get moisture out of veggies or chickpeas that I want to roast and shredded potato when I’m making latkes or hash browns. It can definitely vary from person to person, some people think they’re a huge waste of space, but once I used one I could never go back to not having one again

  The OXO brand can opener. It's such a benign thing, but Ive never had a better can opener, and doubt I ever will. I don't know the design achieves it, but it essentially separates the lid from the can at the attachment point, so that there's no sharp edges and closing it back up is superbly easy. I've always loved it !!!

  Other uses for the OXO bench knife - use the ruler marks to help measure more accurate & consistent cuts, transport chopped parsley/green onions/whatever from the cutting board to the pan, level off measuring cups, quickly swoop off your cutting board into the trash. Use the flat side to pack down brown sugar in the measuring cup, or smash garlic. Excellent tool!

  This is a recurring purchase but..Tide powder detergent. I used to be very into “natural” and “non-toxic” products, but I can’t compromise when it comes to laundry detergent. I used to cloth diaper my babies and NOTHING cleaned those pee and poo holders better than Tide. Also I have soft water so the powder helps dissolve better :-) And a few items that are kitchen staples to me: Wilton stackable wire cooling racks (for cookies/baked goods); Oxo can opener; Wilton cookie scoop; And Corningware casserole dishes.

  I have an Oxo side cutting opener. It's handy for times I want to put the lid back on a partial can. I also have a couple cans on the stove to pour grease into. The lid keeps the smell in. That said, I have two Swing can openers, one with a long crank and a standard one, both of which are at least 40 years old. Now that I think about it, one is from the early 1960s. Both work perfectly. Probably will still be working 40 years from now.

  Oxo make good kitchen gadgets generally speaking; particularly the stainless (has to be the stainless one) ice cream scoop, smooth edge can opener, and bottle brushes. One piece (or rather two-three) of versatile kitchen kit is a good sheet pan (or two) that fits your oven. Half sheet prolly work, but it depends on your oven. If you can get a matching cooling rack, even better. Plus some parchment paper. I'm not sure about specific brands tho. If you have a restaurant supply store near you, you might be able to get something there. Vintage stainless flatware, you should be able to get an entire set, possibly including serving pieces, relatively cheaply. Shop around tho. Sorry y'all are having to deal with this.   BIFL and non-stick do not go together, non-stick cookware will degrade over time and need to be replaced - don't bother with a set unless you are OCD about things matching \*a OXO pro nonstick is probably the best out there... i don't remember the exact model number but there are multiple mentions of it around the internets \*a good, well seasoned, carbon steel or cast iron pan... don't be afraid of them, it isn't that hard and absolutely worth it \*a couple of clad stainless steel items... saucier, a deep skillet and something big enough to boil pasta water \*enamel cast iron Dutch oven I cook almost everything I eat in either my 10" nonstick (mostly eggs), my 10" carbon steel (mostly meats) or my saucier (mostly canned things that I probably shouldn't be eating anyway, but hey sometimes its just easier) you don't need to buy it all at once get what you need and build a set that matches you actual needs rather than a set that is mostly filler crap that you wont use and don't need

  I havebeen using platinum silicone for years with no mold, but I have heard that Stasher and some others have mold issues. Oxo has great ones I have switched to, also no mold. I dry them inside out completely after washing. I also use AurScape food storage containers. No mold as long as totally dried and cured out pist wash.

  This isn't a full list by any means (what I'm about to list I mean, not talking about yours), but here are some things we've had good luck with that I didn't see on yours: vintage stainless flatware (there's a good bit out there and they last pretty much forever aside from when a piece accidentally gets tore up in the kitchen sink disposal) oxo kitchen gadgets (I'm a particular fan of the stainless steel ice cream scoop, but we also use the smooth edge can opener, and bottle brushes) crocs (I know they're not necessarily BIFL but they do last a surprisingly long time, particularly if you just need them for normal around the house and outside errands) corelle cast iron lands end tote bags

  Tramontina tri ply stainless, the made in Brazil ones with all stainless lids. Not the stainless rimmed glass lids. Should you drop one, the all stainless lid might get a dented rim, but the glass may shatter. Cuisipro stainless measuring spoons. Sturdy, narrow oval bowls that fit into most spice jars. One piece construction, so the handles never break off. Pyrex glass measuring cups. At least a 2 cup size, 4 or 8 cup optional. Oxo makes decent dry measuring cups. Oxo is a safe choice for stainless utensils.

It’s a silicone spatula that can tolerate high heat without any issues, I cook everything with it. You can spoon everything from any jar, bowl, or blender.   Digital kitchen scales?

  I’ve been through a few and landed on the Oxo 11 lb. stainless as my favorite, I thought it was too big at first but that’s actually nice, I don’t know what exactly you mean by compact on the range between weighing drugs vs luggage but it above average and maybe not the best if you put it away and take it out a lot - I weigh pretty much everything these days, use a scale instead of measuring cups for liquids, etc. so mine is a fixture in my prep area. I thought the pullout display was a gimmick but it turns out it’s really handy for using it with a full-sized plate or small cutting board. It’s also fairly responsive with isn’t a huge deal but I’ve used some that are laggy enough that you have to be mindful pouring liquids and pace yourself. It requires 1.5v batteries so regular rechargeable are not ideal (they’re only 1.2V, FYI), they work but I notice it’s slow turning on and then gives low battery warnings very quickly so I bought it a set of rechargeable USB-C 1.5V AAA batteries.

  OXO 11lb kitchen scale is the answer. Had one for 13 years before the display went out. OXO doesn't advertise is well but it has a lifetime warranty. I contacted OXO about it, fully expecting a middle finger but they sent me a new one for free. New one works just like the old one too, no crazy "improvements".

  Important Kitchen Essentials?

  The All Clad tools are pretty but heavy. There’s better stuff out there. Break apart kitchen shears. I have ones from Lamson. They’re not as feature rich as say the ones from Ernest Wright but they definitely break apart which I think is more important. It’s also all metal so it’ll never melt. A metal slotted offset spatula, sometimes called a fish spatula. I think it’s the best at pretty much all spatula stuff. Just make sure it’s not overly flexible, it should be on the stiff side more like a burger flipper. The one silicone thing you might want, since you wont use it much, is a silicone spatula of the scraping kind, not flipping kind. It’s great for scraping frosting, dough, pudding whatever out of a bowl. Much better than a spoon. Make sure it’s completely covered in silicone with no seams. Or you could get a wood scraper instead. Not quite as good but it’s no silicone, so there you go. All metal tongs. I have the Siri Yamagi tongs which are simple, light, and good looking. You could get longer ones from another brand but locking tongs are a little annoying, not as handy. A wood spoon. Doesn’t have to be huge. Doesn’t matter which brand. I have one from Flying Tiger for $2. It’s over 10 years old. All I did was sand it once when I first got it. An edgeless can opener or it’s called a safety can opener. I have one from Kuhn Rikon. The one I have is all about cans, but they have versions with extra features. A microplane for grating. The one All Clad tool I have are the measuring spoons. They’re pretty and the weight isn’t a turn off, just makes me think they’ll last forever. For measuring cups I have Oxo, and they have really good features but I don’t think they’ll last forever. I’ve had them a long time though, maybe 10-15 years. If they last another 10 I’ll be happy, but I could see it being 20.

  A good kitchen scale is a must, especially if you do any baking. I use an OXO 11 lb capacity scale with a pull out display (handy if you're using large bowls that might obscure the display) and it does double duty as a mailing scale. Their 5lb scale is cheaper and would be as good in most cases. I use my NordicWare sheet pans on a daily basis and highly recommend them (½ sheet for making granola, roasting vegetables, etc.; ¼ sheet for things like soaking bread for french toast and cold-proofing pizza dough; and ⅛ sheets for prepping tonkatsu (flour in one, egg in another, and panko in another) or other small tasks. The smaller pans stack so they take up very little space and all of them are really well made. As others have said, any of the Thermoworks thermometers are A+ and I really like their silicon mini-spatulas as well.

  Name your top 5 BIFL items

  1. Edwin Jagger Double Edge Razor (10 Years). Any metal one would do but double edge is way better than Gillettes. 2. Oxo Carbon Steel Skillet (2 Years). I have other Cast Iron pans that are BIFL but my carbon steel gets the most use because it’s much lighter and easier to maneuver. 3. Stainless steel tea strainers (5ish years). I drink tea on a regular basis so having a tea strainer is a must. Any would do but I like my Oxo tea strainer the best. 4. Matcha Strainer/sifter from Japan. I bought one from Daiso and it broke in a few weeks. This made in Japan one from Ippodo looks like is gonna be BIFL. 5. Uniqlo U Crew Neck T-Shirts. Maybe not as BIFL as it is clothing at the end of the day but they’re thick, 100% cotton, and I still haven’t gotten rid of any of mine yet. Probably have close to 10 pairs of this t-shirt lmao.

  Does anyone else feel like it's impossible to buy quality stuff anymore? Seems like every single thing I buy falls apart absurdly fast. I try to get quality stuff, but reviews are all fake, star ratings are bought... how do you avoid buying junk?

  Impulse buys, emergencies, personal experience, and trusted reviewers. I bought a random automatic soap dispenser on Amazon, because a friend had something similar and thought it was cool, and it lasted maybe 9 months,. Then I bought the discontinued Simply Human one, because I used that at some random place, it had better features, and I figured that brand wouldn't put their name on disposable garbage (which I know isn't something you can really count on anymore). Their newer one also looked too much like the random one I first got, so I had an aversion to it. I guess I'll know if I did better this time in another six months or so. On the plus side, Cook's Illustrated reviewed automatic soap dispensers and the one I got was their old recommendation. I like their recommendations, I just didn't expect their would review that kind of product. I think the reason to go for quality, as a company, is either going to count in something niche, or where it's very obvious. Maybe I'm wrong but Oxo and Simply Human have a certain solidness to their products you can't fake, I hope. It's all about the right feel in texture, form, and weight. Clothes are so much more subtle about their quality, at a certain point it's obvious something is cheap, but going upward in quality the improvements can be subtle or unnoticeable if you don't know what to look for. It's easy to tell if something feels good, but that can just as easily pill like crazy the first time it's washed, or last years. What if the a cotton shirt is woven from a specific niche method famous for softness, strength, and flexibility I would probably perceive some nice qualities to it, but have no idea what I'm looking at and figure it's not worth the money when I can get just a shirt for a quarter the price or less. Anyway, I know if I try to analyze something in deep detail I end up just delaying, and I should just go with what ever I think is cool from the start. Maybe my subconscious is smarter than I am about these things. Go read a book by its cover.

  If I wasn't worried about the budget, I'd have gone with the Moccamaster for its repairability. That being said, I wound up getting the 8-cup brewer from Oxo on sale for close to half the cost of a Moccamaster. It's still SCA-certified and makes great coffee. I also prefer the insulated carafe instead of a hot plate, even if the last couple drops of coffee don't pour out like they do in a glass carafe.

  Upvoted the Moccamaster. I'll assume you will hit that sub and learned way more about them. I just wanted to post about finding a good deal. There is a risk, but I did ok. There are tons of local Amazon return auctions where I live. I scored what appeared to be unopened and unused one for $50 after two tries. My next want ended up being a coffee bean grinder that automatically weighs the ground beans. I also scored a good deal on a returned/used OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder With Integrated Scale Black Model # 8710200. It may have some faults, but it works perfectly for me as a full time moccamaster grinder. Good luck!

  Best device to make a pot of coffee?

  I have an use an aeropress, v60, chemex, and a french press. These all make great cups, but not convenient if you're in a rush. If you're into having a morning ritual and process, go for one of these. I still use these methods if i'm working from home, or a nice weekend up. I got tired of having the coffee ritual, I ended up getting an OXO 9-cup brewer as a gift. It's SCA (specialtiy coffee association) approved and makes a good consistent cup. I'd use more light-medium to dark roast coffee in a dripper machine. It can still brew light roasts if you're into that, but it doesn't excel at it since you can't dial in temps. I've had it for about two years and I've had no issues and it's my daily driver. You can see a list of approved home brewing machines here. You can find machines in the $150 - $300 range -- https://sca.coffee/certified-home-brewer SCA has certain criteria to be considered a SCA approved maker.

  Not sure why people always feel the need to respond to these threads by saying "learn to use cast iron/stainless steel properly!" I use a nonstick pan for eggs and such, it's fine, they're not BIFL but the better ones can last a decently long time if used properly. They're easier to clean and less fussy overall. I love my cast iron but in my day-to-day life I appreciate the convenience of a good nonstick pan. To answer your question, I've owned a couple different ceramic skillets. They both eventually did start getting discolored/peeling. Apparently it's due to cooking over high heat, but I only used the second one over a low/medium flame and it still started peeling within a year. So I like ceramic in theory but I don't use them anymore. I've had better luck with a Ninja Neverstick pan. I'm not sure what they use for their nonstick coating (it might be Teflon) but it's fantastic. I've used it for years, I've even used it over high heat, but the cooking surface still looks brand new. There are other good brands as well like OXO (and their warranty process is fantastic, they're super flexible with replacements and they've never required me to send them the damaged product). So my tl;dr is that I wouldn't call ceramic a gimmick, but in my experience it's definitely a downgrade in most ways compared to Teflon.

  I’m not big on cooking only because I struggle to plan ahead for it. But I do love tools for cooking and the research involved. Everyone is recommending cast iron and while I love the aesthetic, I abhor the maintenance and the learning curve required. Carbon steel is not much better. Non stick and ceramic will last many years if you treat it well. You can destroy cast iron in no time if it’s also not treated with respect. If you are looking to do stovetop cooking only with this pan I really like the ATK recommended OXO nonstick. According to ATK, PTFE is more durable than ceramic. If you want to use it in the oven then you may need to get ceramic or other non coated pan. Unless you have a passion for cooking, cleaning, maintenance, etc. I find non stick frying pan to be a much more enjoyable experience to use. Just use silicone and plastic utensils. Look up best practices for cooking with whatever type of pan you go with. No metal utensils ever.

  Ceramic cookware isn't BIFL, I do HAVE a ceramic pan. I'd recommend buying ONE from the discount rack at Walmart. It will last as long as the $40 ones (maybe 2-3yrs at best) However, also buy a stainless or carbon steel pan and tryn learn how to use it. The only thing I use my ceramic pan for is eggs, bc I just haven't quite gotten the hang of eggs in stainless or cast iron Also, people are ignoring that regular non stick doesn't last very long either. Ceramic is better than Teflon (even now that Teflon no longer contains an extreme carcinogen)

  Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over

  We drink tons of coffee and tea, so the last thing I pack and the first thing out of the box in a new place every time we move is the electric kettle. I have a Hamilton Beach stainless steel model that I've had for over a decade, and it gets used multiple times a day every day. It's a beast. The second and third things out of the boxes are my ancient glass French press and my OXO tea infuser. We've replaced multiple Mr. Coffee and Hamilton Beach drip coffee makers, as well as a Keurig that finally died after 7 years, but my kettle/French press/tea infuser combo is a lifesaver. Also in the kitchen, a crockpot. Go thrifting and look at second hand stores for the old glassware/cookware/baking sheets/etc, but see if you can also find a crockpot. The last thing you want to worry about some days when starting over is cooking, so being able to throw something together and let it cook while you deal with life is always a good thing. I'd also add a small rice cooker, but I'm not sure that's for everyone. I love my $15 one from Aldi, but it's only a few months old so not sure of the longevity of the cheaper versions. Kitchen knives are a personal choice. I'd suggest buying a few good knives over a big set until you know what brand you like. Personally, I'm a savage that uses a paring knife for 75% of the time in the kitchen. Do I have a full set and know there are "better" knives? Yes. Do I care? No. My paring knife is my primary knife because I feel most comfortable with a smaller wicked sharp blade. I could get away with only also needing a chef's knife and a bread knife to be totally comfortable, but Husband uses them all. After getting caffeine and something to cook with, I'd find good pillows and a mattress. My opinion only, but I'd rather buy cheaper sheets and have a good mattress with a waterproof/allergy proof type mattress bag, and good pillows with the same waterproof/allergy proof covers. I'm a restless sleeper and rotate how I sleep, so my favorite pillow is a cooling pillow from Sleepy. It is soft, so I can mush it to whatever shape I need for my sleep position as I change during the night. Absolutely balked at the $100+ price tag initially, but the store had a 30 day return policy if I didn't like it. For the rest of the house, a good toilet plunger before you need it is a must. I'm also a fan of having a sink plunger, but we had a learning curve of a house with a sink disposal. They are two different types of plungers, in case you didn't know. As others have said, a good vacuum is a must, but it's less useful if you don't have a lot of carpeting/rugs to clean or pets to have hair drift in corners.

  Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over

  I’d suggest cast iron pans and a couple good cookie sheets like Nordic ware. A few good kitchen knives. Then stainless steel pots and pans for the things you don’t want to do in cast iron. We’ve had a good experience with our all clad. A good can opener like the one by Oxo is not too expensive but will last for decades and does make life easier. A good pair of scissors. After that, personally, I’d want comfortable bedding. Sheets aren’t “buy it for life,” but high-quality sheets are definitely “buy-it-for-longer.” I like the organic cotton percale at Pottery Barn, but others on this sub like even more expensive options. Then a high quality, washable warm layer of some sort. I sleep hot and like a cotton-linen blanket because it breathes. But if you want something warmer, a quality down duvet with an allergy cover and a duvet cover over top can be kept in excellent condition for decades. And many people on this sub would suggest wool or wool blends. Since you’ll be starting fresh with bedding I’d invest in quality allergy covers for your pillows and mattress. I use two layers of covers - a waterproof one as a base layer and then a tightly woven one over that. Then mattress pad and then sheet. Mattresses aren’t ever BIFL, but that way you’ll be able to maximize its life span and minimize any allergens. As for appliances, I’m one of those people who loves my top-loading Speed Queens. They’re highly repairable tanks.   Electric stainless steel kettle?

  Stainless steel AND inexpensive is tough. I’m a tea drinker and also did not want plastic. I got an OXO one that allows you to set temperature and is a combo of stainless steel and glass — and a plastic filter (which you can remove). The lid pieces tend to all be plastic unfortunately unless you go with the gooseneck. At least this is true for what I could find at more or less reasonable price of $100.

  I use OXO good grips glass smart seal. They are made of borosilicate glass so I can (and have) taken them from fridge to oven when I’m lazy. Their tops are plastic with a removable silicone gasket. The only thing I will say about them is that if you put hot food in them and transfer them straight to the fridge sometimes the condensation makes for a lid that’s nearly impossible to open when you take it out again. It just locks really tight.

  Single use plastic is the devil, but impossible to completely ignore in modern society. We try our best with it. We use a refillable soap dispenser (OXO). We don't use bottled water (Epic water pitcher). Use wool dryer balls instead of dryer sheets. Bar soap instead of body wash. We used to use recycled toilet paper, but we've since caved in on that. The one thing I really make a point of is buying cruelty free items. My wife has a harder time because she buys makeup, but it doable. I also try to buy local produce and meats that have been properly raised. I live in Northern California, so we have it pretty good. We sure as shit aren't saving the world and certainly don't judge anyone else, but those are the few things we do.

  I've tried ceramic and it sticks. I bought a pre-seasoned carbon steel pan from OXO and I LOVE IT. It is the closest thing to teflon nonstick. I make a lot of korean pancakes and socca, and it does a pretty good job of being non stick. I also have Le Crueset frying pans but they stick for me.   I have two Swing-A-Way can openers, and both are over 40 years old. One has a long crank handle, which makes it easier to use. I also have an OXO good grips smooth edge can opener. Unfortunately, OXO no longer offers this model. It works very well, but the soft grip material likely won't hold up as well as the vinyl grips on the Swing-A-Way.

  Of note, OXO glassware/bakeware and a lot of glassware from Zwilling is borosilicate and not soda lime glass. There are many smaller makers who also offer borosilicate bakeware/glassware. It is more prone to chipping and shattering than soda lime glass, but unlike soda lime glass, it doesn't 'explode' when exposed to sudden temperature changes.

  I have had a Krups, Miroco, and OXO gooseneck. The Krups and Miroco lasted about a year each before they abruptly stopped working. The Krups was a house warming gift. The Miroco I saw recommended on a coffee sub. We use a kettle daily to make pour over coffee and sometimes tea. After the Miroco broke, I did research and went with the OXO. So far, I like it. It heats up quickly, it will stay at that temp for 30 min, you can control the temp down to the degree, and the gooseneck allows great control. I don't love how small it is, but that's my fault for not paying attention. Some people think the beep is not loud enough. I hear it fine from across my house. I've only had it for four months but so far I love it.

  Oxo does all right, but the soft grips have always come off. I've had 3. The first wore out ( cook at home for almost everything), the second broke through catastrophic accidental damage, the third is going strong for 3 years now. All three pairs had the rubberized grip covers slide off the plastic handles after a few uses. You can shove them back on for a while, but I just toss them since the plastic handles underneath are fine.

  We got the OXO Adjustable Temperature Kettle two years ago and are really happy with it. The only thing that annoys me a tad is that it's hard to completely empty it. Very minor complaint, though. It heats up quickly, won't ruin the counter if you set it there (rather than on the base directly after heating), and it looks pretty decent. My sister got a Zwilling. The kettle is stainless steel rather than glass. I think it looks a little nicer on the counter, and it can easily be fully emptied. She has been really happy with it.

  I have recently had minor problems with three OXO products. The locking mechanism on a set of tongs broke off, the rubberized grip on a pizza cutter and box grater disintegrated. It was on closer inspection and reflection that I realized I had been abusing the hell out of these items on a near daily basis for 25 - 30 years. They did not owe me anything. I have replaced them (though I still use the injured tongs and grater) and will happily do so again in 2055.

  OXO’s Good Grips line is great. Originally designed for people with arthritis and low hand strength. If you’ve ever seen the wacky looking guy(not a read) on YouTube(Epicurious is the channel) that reviews kitchen gadgets based on usability and design, his name’s Dan Formosa and his team created the good grips line. It’s not going to last forever, eventually the blade will dull, but I’d rather spend $10 every 10-15 years than spend $45 on something untested ASSUMING more money=more life.

  Idk anything about this one but we have two in our house (one I keep at work). Oxo (that’s the one I keep at work) and one that is made by Kuhn Rikon and it looks like a bunny. Both are great and we’ve had them for years. I don’t think they make the bunny one anymore, but you can find it on eBay. It’s a neat design because instead of twisting the knob, there’s a level that goes up and down. My husband had some wrist issues from carpal tunnel and that can opener was the only one that worked for him.

  Can y’all help me pick a coffee maker?

  I got the oxo 8 cup coffee maker for my wife and it’s great. It’s $200 new I believe. I got mine on eBay for $100. “Open box” but it was brand new. Still taped up and in all original packaging.

  Where do I find a good manual coffee grinder?

  Mine is 7 years old and still going strong. However, I also have a OXO Brew Conical Burr and prefer it. both are automatic though so not really answering OP's question.

  Hario switch, oxo kettle. Little scientific scale from Amazon, name brand but can't remember name. My zojirushi drip machine.

  Simplehuman Has is Terrible

  Their stuff is usually pretty great in my experience. My wife had a makeup mirror that lasted over 10 years. Only reason she gave it away was to get a larger one. The new one is also from SH and it's been excellent. I don't have their trash can, but I use their bags and they are the best garbage liners I've used. If you want a rock solid soap dispenser. I have the OXO stainless steel one and it's brilliant. Doesn't have "no-touch" sensor, though. May be a deal breaker for you.

  Oxo conical bur grinder (baratza encore if you want to spend more) Hario v60 pour over set (02 size) Maybe a gooseneck kettle if you're feeling fancy For one person, you do not need a machine. Also, try sourcing some higher quality medium roast coffees.

  Pour over coffee (Hairo, Yeti, Ikea, OXO) with a gooseneck tea kettle French Press depending on the make (Frieling is very BIFL- made for cafe use) Moka Pot is very BIFL as well. Lots of options out there that are not a percolator. If you want a more traditional coffee maker there is Moccamaster.

  Good grinder (I have a Bartaza Encore which has lasted 6 years and shows no signs of breaking + has replaceable parts) and a good pour over automatic coffee maker (I have an oxo brain 9 cup that’s 10 years old, but people love the mocha master)

  OXO 1065872 Good Grips 4-inch Pizza Wheel with polycarbonate blade is what I use. Doesn't scratch non-stick pans like the pizza pan that came with my convection oven. Doesn't rattle at all.

  Yeah good grips & SteeL are significantly higher quality but also priced significantly higher than their standard line. You'll see this with their salad spinner - cheaper plastic model for $25, GG and SteeL for 65$ made of glass & steel respectively.

  I'm a big OXO fan, but not all their stuff is great. These are the items I have that I would recommend. Silicone Garlic Peeler—completely unnecessary, but amazing. Good Grips Pro Swivel Peeler—best peeler I've ever used. Razor sharp and has kept its edge for years. Good Grips Precision Oil Dispenser—Recent purchase, but works great and build quality is excellent. Good Grips Stainless Steel Soap Dispenser—Perfect in every way. Love it Good Grips 12imch tongs w/ silicone tips—Great design. Great quality.

  My OXO good grips pizza cutter is over 10 years old and going strong, I got a buddy the same one last year, and his works great to. No sure what issue you're having.

  I've noticed a big disparity in quality between the OXO Good Grips line, and their other lines. Good Grips seems to be much better.

  Might have gone downhill like many brands. I was literally thinking the other day that we did well buying our OXO utensils & tools (8 years ago, though). They’re all still doing great.

  Stainless steel cookware recommendations?

  Teflon doesn’t last forever since the coating is a wear-item, so I generally recommend buying a decent but cheap nonstick for when you need it, and going high quality on the rest. I buy a basic 12” nonstick pan from the restaurant supply store, and they last for years. Either get one of those or a T-Fal or Oxo - or any decent quality and comfortable-to-hold nonstick from Homegoods/Homesense/Marshalls/etc. $30ish or under. Spend on the cookware that’ll last - stainless, cast iron, carbon steel, etc. but never spend more than a basic amount on any nonstick pans.

  I have the oxo one and it does the job - no issues. I left it too close to a burner once so the handle is a little melted but still fine. Lasted years but like another commenter said “not sure how others go through these things so quickly”

  OXO steel. Don't listen to suggestions for their other models. All metal construction with rubberized coatings for where you handle it. Not much to break. Their other models like the ones with the "smooth open" or whatever are majority plastic. Don't risk it

  I don’t understand what people do to go through a can opener (or a measuring cup) in a year. I have an OXO that’s lasted me for ages and a Swing a Way that I stlll have because it works as well as the day I bought it.

  Thank you for sharing this. I am about ready to order two Oxo Steel openers directly from Oxo, but I am about three dollars short of free shipping. I went to Amazon and dropped them in my cart instead. I think I'll remove them and go back to Oxo. At least I know that I'm getting what I am paying for.

  Try a "side opening" type. OXO, Zyliss and others have models. These leave a smooth edge on both the can and the can top, which is safer, plus the cutter never touches the contents so you never have to do more than rinse it, no rust, no clogs. Takes a bit of practice because it is a totally different "action" but it is well worth it.

  EZ-DUZ-IT is a wonderful made in USA brand. But Japanese style can openers are also popular and bullet proof. OXXO also has some well made models but EZ-DUZ-IT is my go to.
