  How do synthetic base layers compare to merino wool base layers?

  Yeah but I use about 10ish in rotation, standard kids expeditions are 4 days plus 3 days training with only a day between. Cross country expeditions 6 day paddling plus 2 days set up. I’ve had a pile of different brands and materials and the drawer is filled by all the tough kit as the weaker stuff dies and the Marino stuff falls down by far the quickest and for the highest cost. Rohan, Quechua, Helly hensen and Lowe alpine are the 10+ year stars. Patagonia and Paramo sit somewhere between - hanging in there but not holding up to the rigours of constant use. They’re newer items bought when the new breed of pro scheme discounts came out but not going to make it to 5 years. I love the feel of Marino but it has no place in a BiFl groups - except perhaps darn tough - I’ve just worn through my first pair so we’ll see if the guarantee is worth the extra cost.

  Advice on Columbia jacket zipper delamination

  The waterproofing certainly is not what it used to be. So even less in Columbia’s favour I have not been using the jacket as intensely (ie daily wearing) in the past year as I used to, since I switched to a Paramo jacket (highly recommend but pricy) as the main active jacket (Columbia as a back up). Nevertheless I would have expected the quality to be better for a relatively pricy brand. I hope your jacket fares better than mine!

  What was the best purchase you made this year?

  Finally nabbed a paramo Velez adventure smock. They were running a sale (I think that’s quite rare for them outside of accessories and disposables) and I’ve been wanting one for about 7-8 years now. A few upcoming events + the sale + being eager were enough to tip the scale. It fits so perfectly and the color is fucking awesome in person. I can’t wait until it rains lol.

  Paramo waterproof jackets could be worth looking into. I like that they can last 10-20 years. Just needs regular reproofing

  Rain coat - no peeling does it exist?

  I have heard great things about Paramo - meant to be extremely ethical and will fix or give you money off if their jackets break. However, you would have to check whether they'd be up to scratch for Canadian weather.

  Hiking Jacket Help & Advice

  I'm a big fan of the UK brand Mountain Equipment. Have a look here for some discounted stuff of theirs.  https://www.magic-mountain.co.uk/ No one jacket will work in all those conditions without layering but most people would get a Goretex jacket for the rain then layer fleece/baselayer etc underneath depending on the weather.  I have an ME Switch jacket/fleece hybrid which is good in a lot of conditions but not waterproof.  Some people swear by Paramo but I've never used their stuff.

  Jacket brands in Europe

  I’ve been using a Paramo jacket for years now. Not waxed, super breathable, and genuinely tough. Might not be as well-known, but definitely built to last.

  All weather all year jacket for life recommendation?

  Thank you for the prompt reply, really appreciate it! I’m pretty much in the same mindset as you regarding membrane/goretex vs waxed garments. My current top pick is Fjallraven Greenland, but currently considering Paramo, Carhartt, and Patagonia as well. Thanks for pointing out the iron forge canvas. Never heard of it untill now and that one looks nice. How do you find your Vidda Pro performs untill now?

  Disappointed by Patagonia Repair Policy

  Paramo is the more ethical version. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Patagonia failing to repair an item like this is poor. Defaulting to "we won't repair it but you can buy another one" is bad practice.

  A list of BIFL not made in the USA

  For outdoor gear I'd like to nominate 2 UK firms Buffalo Systems Paramo Both offer alternatives to membrane systems such as Gor-Tex. I've used both a lot in plenty of cold and wet UK weather. I've had the problem of the Buffalo system being too warm if it didn't get cold enough! The Buffalo system doesn't use a DWR, and Paramo is really easy to reproof yourself with Nikwax. But they have both proven to be quite hard wearing, despite the pertex shell. Easy to maintain, relatively easy to repair if it is needed, and with really good customer service when I've needed it. Which was rare.

  What material water-resistant jackets are most breathable?

  Paramo was a revelation for me. It's super popular in the UK & Ireland and even some mountain rescue teams use it. It's not a membrane but simulates animal fur (it's synthetic of course). It breathes super well and keeps you warm even if it leaks (which it shouldn't). Expensive but literally lasts decades. My advice is to buy second hand, ebay, vinted etc are good places to find paramo. There's jackets, smocks and trousers. Make sure you buy the ones that say "waterproof" as they have windproofs also which is not what you're looking for.

  Rain jacket? Upgrade time

  I thought Paramo, but the upkeep once in a while might be pushing it if worn regularly, also I and many others find them pretty warm. Great kit though, and I have probably too much of it.
