Straight razor for personal grooming

I went this route because I need to be clean shaven for my job and I often need to shave away from my house. Its more compact than a safety razor and I spend about $10 a year on blades without the need for any real maintenance.

What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?
Fendrihan brand nail brush — ah, German engineering :-) Mason Pearson hair comb. If you want to be extra spendy, spring for the 100% boar bristle brush. This thing is incredible. I know it’s silly to wax poetic about a hair brush, but it makes a world of difference. I often buy them for friends as gifts because it’s too much money to justify spending on yourself, but when you have it, you get it. Truly a BIFL product. Dr. Bronner’s castile soap. We cut it with water and use it as a cleaning product. Bought a nice glass spray bottle for it. It cleans everything and has cut down on our cleaning supply clutter, and the scents are so fresh and nice. My husband has issues with strong scents but these never bother his nose or sinuses. American Trench socks. I re-up once a year or so with fresh ones. Worth every penny. Incredible 100% cotton socks, and American made. A chrome shaving razor handle. Men’s Room Barber Shop is an online site that sells beautiful grooming products. My handle feels heavy and luxurious in the hand, and never gets moldy or mildewy in the shower. You can also just keep buying the heads instead of throwing away the whole handle. It’s simplified the shaving process for me. Do we value things more when we pay more for them?
Same goes for sunglasses. Pay $150 for a pair, you’re less apt to lose that pair. For me it’s time invested, not money. To your pen example, I buy cheap ($10-$20) pens, but I picked them after trying several, searching online for what I wanted, reading reviews, scouring EDC sites and subs. Now my $11 X701 and $15 Parker Jotters never get lost, left around or stolen. I’m invested, just not monetarily.

Bought a Parker 97R and pretty impressed with it. Hefty weighted short handle, rough knurling feels almost like a barbell. Think it’s based off the Merkur 34c.

What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
Parker Jotter has never failed me in the year's I have had it. feels just as nice as the day i got it! haven't used any pen since. $13 well spent I say. a $10 kindle I bought a couple years ago (that was already a decade old). set to be completely offline, i read books on it for months on a single charge, really can't fault it at all.

If you can stomach the idea of putting an unprotected blade at your throat, a good shavette and a pack of blades lasts a long time…. I have a cheap parker i’ve used for 9 years now

I have a beard and pretty much only shave some of my neck. I've tried several safety razors and my favorite one is the Parker semi-slant paired with Feather blades. There is a bit of a learning curve, but if you go slow, you will get the hang of it.

This is the way. Such a great refill. I use them in Parker Jotters at the moment mostly, but also in a fairly cheap bolt action pen I got off Amazon. Bastion I think was the brand.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
I managed to keep the same pilot, refillable pen throughout college, but I'm also the type of person who never lost a guitar pick playing a gig. I've had the same Parker jotter, Fisher bullet and cap o matic space pens and no name TI Bolt action pen for years now as well. Assuming that is because I always either have them on my person or in my bag and I never let anyone borrow them.

My father's Vintage 1943 Parker 51 Vacumatic fountain pen. He bought it in Casablanca, Morocco during WW II. I inherited it when he passed in 1999. I've had it restored and I write with it everyday.
