Filson Appreciation Post: BIFL Best
Pendleton is top notch wool. I like their sweaters and wool coats and have had a few. For canvas duck, Filson is my go to. Yeah on Filson website, you can specify “imported”, “made in USA” or “made at filson”… obviously quality seems to match

Pendleton forever. But I have to admit that my Faribault is holding up quite well. If you want synthetic, I have a Berkshire Blanket on my bed that is still outstandingly plush and warm after 20 years of use. Best fleece blanket I've ever owned, by far.

Thoughts on RRL overshirts/flannels?
RRL is ok quality but not for the price. Pendleton is more of a buy it for life in my opinion. I have 4 Pendleton wool shirts and the westerly sweater and I love them all and wear them frequently. RRL doesn’t come close to the same quality. Aesthetically RRL is great, as they definitely have the rustic look, but the price detracts from that. I fairly new Canadian brand called Anian has the most amazing wool shirts, pricey yes, but buy it for life without a doubt. Definitely worth checking out.

Absolutely second Pendleton and Barbour, those are solid picks that'll last forever. Also keep an eye out for old LL Bean stuff - their vintage wool pieces are tanks and usually way cheaper than the new stuff

Casual Women’s Clothing for 33 year Old
It’s hard to find quality construction these days. I have started shipping exclusively at the thrift store. I look for all-natural fibers and good construction, which you used to find on mid-market brands whereas now even high-end brands cut corners. Lots of timeless styles out there, or you can have a tailor adjust the silhouette. If thrift hunting is daunting then look on eBay. Pendleton, Ralph Lauren (not the green label Lauren though), Brooks Brothers. Vintage only: Benetton, Ann Klein, Missoni, Liz Claiborne. Vintage cashmere was higher ply and is more durable.

Where to find vintage pendleton flannels easily?
I’m an old corporate Pendleton employee and honestly I would just save & buy a new one when they’re on sale. I know it’s a pretty penny but it’s an investment. A, it’s brand new. B, you don’t have to worry about a used item being poorly taken care of because most people don’t know how to properly care for wool items. Usually there’s moth damage, stress tears, or the item has shrunk and is really misshapen and the finish has been ruined. C, I would advise against online reselling purchases because you don’t know where the item has been/how it’s stored and it could have moth larvae in it and that’s a serious problem for wool/natural fibers. Plus, you really need to see & feel the condition to see what you’re getting & spending your money on. If you know how to care for wool then it will last you a lifetime and then some. If you do happen to find a vintage item that you like, in good condition and it fits properly, I would immediately get it dry cleaned. Make sure to ask the cleaners if they have experience with wool/pendleton items. If you have any questions about Pendleton stuff, I’m full of weird knowledge, haha. Good luck!

Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?
Of my three jackets from the brands I mentioned above, the Pendleton is my favorite. It's 100% wool, fits great, lightweight, and I can wear it even when it warms up to above sweater temps (think, like, 70°F). That's great there's a store near you so you don't have to buy it blind. I've gotta order online and hope for the best!

I was once assigned to work in Austin for five months. My employer wanted me to stay there longer but since I already complain pretty loudly about my NC summers, I wasn’t willing to be anywhere in Texas past May. So hearing about your experience with wool socks is pretty impactful for me lol. Thanks for the brand recommendations! I’m willing to spend on something that will check all my boxes. But since there’s people who don’t notice any itchiness from the brands I tried, I don’t want to waste my time and money if I’m simply sensitive to wool. That being said, I haven’t given up yet and It looks like I can try Pendleton at a store nearby! Maybe that brand will work for me!

Cashmere and merino from J.Crew and Banana Republic cause irritation. Should I try higher-end brands or look for alternatives?
I work outside in Texas all year, and 100% of my socks are wool blends. Even the thick ones are never too hot. In fact, the more wool content they have, the less hot they feel. I cringe when I think about what my cotton socks felt and smelled like before I switched to wool, especially in the dead of summer. As for your OP, yeah, some brands are way better than others in both quality of fur (wool) and workmanship. I personally would not buy wool stuff from the places you mentioned above. They might be cute or stylish off If you want to "invest" in a high-quality garment that will last, then there are several "buy once, cry once" brands with beautiful and durable sweaters. When I feel my Filson ($$$$), Pendleton ($$$), and Schaefer Outfitters ($$) wool outerwear against my wife's Old Navy ($) wool peacoat, the difference in feel/scratchiness is VERY noticeable. There are several UK/EU brands that make reasonably affordable and very attractive sweaters, with the best all-around probably being Aran.

Need BIFL Recommendations as a Graduation Present!
My parents offered a similar gift (in 2005) but it had to be jewelry. I picked a bezel diamond necklace. I rarely wore it for a long time because I’m not really a jewelry person, but i do usually wear it when I’m traveling and it has become more sentimental to me as I’ve gotten older. I’m on a holiday trip now and have it packed. I recommend selecting something that’s functional and useful for a long time. Like a king size wool Pendleton blanket — after my dad died, I took my mom on a special trip to Glacier National Park because my parents had been there together a few times and loved it. It was a special and emotional trip and I bought the Glacier print Pendleton blanket for my bed as a little nod to my dad and the trip with my mom and someday when I die, I know my nieces and nephews will be fighting over them. I’m a sentimental person

If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US)
Wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, alpaca. Natural fibers constructed well. I would focus only on classic brands I love that hold up forever: Pendleton, LL Bean, Orvis, Duluth, Barbour, Levis, Ralph Lauren, Max Mara, St. John, Lafayette 148, some Brooks Brothers, vintage Armani. I would thrift more. I would buy more classic basics. Wish I would have known about fabrics and good construction in my 20s.

Op, I think this person has a good idea. I wanted a hunting jacket, you know, tweed with gusseted shoulders, elbow patches, pockets you can actually use, and that's not the kind of thing that makes much sense when it looks brand-new. I bought a Pendleton off eBay and I get compliments on it. Not that I'm such a fashion plate... But I think this poster is doing you a solid.

Wool Blanket? Recommendations?
Faribault factory seconds - you can find a King pure & simple blanket really close to your budget ($179). They sell fast though, so expect to check the site daily to catch a restock. Mine’s a “standard” one, but washes fine cold and line dries easy. I’ve gotten seconds from the Pendleton factory. If faribault’s anything like Pendleton, the “defects” were hard to find and had to be pointed out by employees who had factory experience and knew what to look for.

Wool Blanket? Recommendations?
Depends on how much work or crafting you’re willing to do, and scratchiness you’re willing to accept. Rock bottom budget, I ordered over a dozen 100% Canadian wool DND blankets last year, they’re about full size, smell a bit from the moth treatment but air them out in the sun on a clothesline and it goes away. They’re warm especially when doubled up, and thick, 1950s quality, one day they’ll be all bought up. https://camolots.com/products/new-vintage-canadian-military-heavy-wool-blanket?srsltid=AfmBOor-c3NavEn2USRJYZXBWSNVTJZntgPcpjuA-wvFRVNxJMKUL9Tc Cruising through eBay or Etsy, you might find a solid Hudson Bay 4 or 6 point blanket. The “points” or lines indicate the size, so a 4-4.5 point blanket is twin size I believe, while a 6 is a queen, 8 point blankets, which are rare, are king sized. Hudson Bay just went out of business after centuries, but there are several other woolen mill companies making solid items, Faribault Mills, North Star, Pendleton, Johnson Woolen Mills sells blankets, or you can buy their wool by the yard and pick a good weight, maybe make your own. I think 1yd of 24oz 100% wool in Old Canadian is $65 by Johnson woolen mills. https://www.johnsonwoolenmills.com/products/wool-fabric-by-the-yard-43-old-canadian-plaid?_pos=35&_fid=d66e42bb3&_ss=c I’ve been on the hunt for wool blankets for the last 18 ish months, it helps to know when you’ve got wool vs acrylic. Probably the holy grail of surplus / very high quality wool blankets would be the elusive Swiss Officer’s blanket? There’s also a Dutch navy blanket I believe, but both are supposed to be very heavy and durable. Last I checked Etsy had one of the Dutch ones for $300+, they made them up until 2010 I think. But it was new in the bag and huge. I opted for the Canadian ones and while they are 5/10 scratchy, if you sleep under a sheet and put 2 on top, you’ll be toasty and not feel the scratchiness. Also great for camping, having in the car. I don’t mind the smell but when the box full of them showed up, my whole house smelled like them haha.

Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?
I agree with you OP. I also agree with all the people explaining why handmade things are so expensive. I do wish the commonly available options, from popular or common brands, were still decent quality, and not made of plastic and purposely designed to fall apart in a year or two. It can definitely be hard to find middle of the road options, between the $30 pants that need to be replaced every year, and the $200 dollar hand made in Japan options. I find a lot of times paying $75 for something I'm still unsure if it'll fall apart in 2 years anyway. The best solution I've found is used or vintage. A lot of old made in America stuff was fairly impressive, and can be bought fairly affordable. I love wool, so the first examples I can think of are Patagonia, LL Bean, Pendleton, Carhartt, Woolrich, Johnson Woolen Mills, Filson, but there's a lot of others. I've found I can often find vintage clothes, that look like they were hardly worn, for $20-$100 dollars and wear it for ever. I think companies like this are proof that it is possible to make clothes for the masses that last 30 years. Companies now just choose not to. I guess the answer you're looking for, OP, is greed and capitalism. :)

I’m looking for a sweater that will last me a long time & is very comfortable - an investment (:
This has been my fixation for the past couple of years. Recs for women/anyone looking for a slightly more feminine look below. I also have a bias towards natural fibers which is a little irrational. Buying new: - Expensive but good quality and on trend: babaa wool sweaters. Oversized chunky knits from Spain, more fashion forward in the sense that their sleeves trend towards bat wing. They have sales throughout the year at regular times, always 25% off. Mid 300 euro range. Softens as you wear it. I bought one last year and wore it several times a week, it’s among my favorite purchases ever. - Aran knit sweater- classic Irish wool sweaters. Unfortunately I find that a lot of these have trended towards merino blends (which is not what I want in a durable chunky sweater, give me some heavy regular wool!). But it’s always well priced and excellent quality. - LL Bean’s cotton sweaters are a favorite Buying vintage: - expensive option: you can find vintage Loro Piana in the 300-400$ range on eBay, among the highest quality cashmere available! Definitely not indescrructible but timeless and will last a lifetime with care. - Pendleton wool sweaters are dirt cheap on resale, always at my Goodwill and shopgoodwill.com, and high quality. I do find them scratchier than my other wool sweaters. - Ralph Lauren and Pringle of Scotland are brands I’ve had luck with in the vintage category

Pendleton Wool sweaters are a great option. They are not cheap, they are extremely well made. Ultimately a sweater can only be BIFL if you know how to take care of it. Sweaters should rarely be washed, wash your garments you wear under the sweater but only spot clean the sweater unless you absolutely have to wash it. I wash my sweaters at the end of the winter before I put them in my cedar chest. I wash them on gentle and lay them flat to dry.

2025 Christmas Thread - Best Christmas gift ideas?
The gift of asking! I've been told once or twice that I seem like that type and thus get knick knacks. If they had asked they would've known I love yummy new treats in cool non-plastic bottles, am into a cyclical economy, or have a hard time buying fancy things for myself. So gifts like like real honey that taste like whatever region it's from or a pre-owned Pendleton blanket would've been both affordable and amazing to me. So, the gift of asking is kinda rare but means more because it shows a thoughtfulness that warms the heart.

Best Brands or Fabrics to thrift?
I love linen, cotton, wool and leather - but don’t forget just because it’s a natural fiber it doesn’t mean it’s immediately good quality! Look for neat, even stitching and properly finished hems/seams, soft/supple feeling leather (I almost bought a leather skirt at the thrift recently but it was unlined and felt almost brittle so I left it) For wool I love Pendleton (especially the vintage stuff, it’s not too hard to find), and Brora (easier to find in the UK as it’s Scottish) For general basics I love vintage Talbots and Liz Claiborne - I find they last really well and often use natural fiber blends (so you might find polyester but less of it and the construction of the garments is better) If you’re looking to buy more modern stuff I like Everlane and Uniqlo although I’m fairly sure they’re both still considered ‘fast fashion’ even though they’re a bit more upscale

Warmest coat made of natural material that doesnt include down feathers?
I made myself a capote using waxed canvas, a wool blanket, and a minky lining (you could use non-synthetic, I just already had it on hand). I got the canvas from the hardware store (drop cloth) and waxed it myself. The wool was a Pendleton that has been in my family for a while and had several repairs felted in. It's too warm most of the winter (but I'm coastal) and I mostly wear it along the waterfront in the winter.

Warmest coat made of natural material that doesnt include down feathers?
I have a flannel-lined wool car coat from Pendleton. I don't normally like the feel of flannel, but every time I wear this coat I'm in long sleeves, so it works great for me. My wife bought it for me around 1990. Back then, they still allowed smoking in bars and some restaurants, so it has been to the dry cleaners a few times over the years, but save that, has required zero maintenance. As others have mentioned, a Navy-style pea coat is great, too. You mention that you have a difficult time regulating your body temperature. Have you tried a heated vest or base layer? Milwaukee makes decent ones that don't break the bank. My brother-in-law does search and rescue in the mountains in Utah and swears by them.

I haven’t purchased any wool clothing in a long time so I’m hesitant to recommend any. I’ve got some older [Filson](https://www.filson.com/collections/outerwear) and [Woolrich](https://www.woolrich.com/us/en/) that have been great. I have more recently purchased blankets and throws from [Fairbault Mills](https://www.faribaultmill.com/collections/apparel?page=1). Their apparel section is limited but I’ve been really happy with their products. Another option is [Pendleton](https://www.pendleton-usa.com). Again, I can’t personally vouch for their products since I don’t own any but they’re been around for a hundred years so hopefully they’re doing something right.

Omg weatherwool is so legit. I met them at a trade show years ago and have yet to see higher quality stuff. I have a really nice Filson wool coat in the bottomlands camo that I also love like crazy. Pendleton has served me well too. Will be checking out the others in your list too.

Pendleton has some really nice wool options. Not always full peacoat cut, but very BIFL energy and good sleeve lengths

A good blanket for everything!
I found some really good Pendleton blankets on ebay before in the past. If they are the flashier ones they are gonna be more expensive but if you find some without all the "western thrills" patterns or whatever they aren't too bad!

A good blanket for everything!
Another vote for Pendleton. I’ve got my feet under a vintage one right now. Empower yourself by learning how to wash them safely yourself. I use a liquid castille soap, like Dr. Bronners, not Woolite. Pre-fill a tub and dissolve the soap before adding the blanket. Soak them in the tub with little agitation. No twisting or wringing. Don’t temperature shock the wool and don’t use Tide or similar detergent it’ll maintain it’s soft texture.

Pendleton blanket. Crock pot (basic 4qt), Technivorm Moccamaster, Baratza Encore, two Subarus, two Harleys (big twins), knives, Vitamix blender, Miele vacuum, Whirlpool drier and fridge, and some other stuff (Grundens, Patagonia apparel) , Snap On , Matco tools, etc, which at least (all in this list) are 15 years and older and still standing. Oh, forgot to mention MacBook Pro and iMac Mid 2009 still standing. Bose mini speaker. BUY LESS BUY BETTER!

Thoughts on Best Made Co.?
I do think Best Made is out of their fucking mind with some prices of items they have, however, I think they're a pretty cool brand, I followed the redevelopment of the brand under the OG founder and I think he's doing it better this time around. I have the Hudson Bay axe, and il be real. I fucking love it? I bought it unfinished so if I want to design my own handle I can. I bought as like a legacy item, I hope own days my kids kids just go "this is grandpas axe" I have a few items like this and one of my finest finds on eBay was this from Best Made. It's a wool blanket linked duck canvas chore coat, the wool is from Pendleton, limited release and was originally 500$ and I nabbed it for 150$

Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?
Work jackets are tough since all clothes are a bit different and some fit better on different body types. I’ve loved my Filson jacket(s) for many years if you take care of it, it will take care of you. Bushcraft knife - Ive had and used my Dad’s Buck 192. Vanguard for at least 15 years. It’s a tank. However, I do have several winkler knives on my wish list. They’re still hand made, the quality is excellent, and the dude made all the weapons on the last of the Mohican movie. Pots and pans - can’t go wrong with All clad and Le creuset Kitchen knife’s are tough since they are a big “preference” item. But Wusthof makes excellent mass produced knives. If you’re looking for something more custom I’d research your local blacksmiths. One of my favorites is Henry Hyde. His site is Hyde handmade knives(all one word).com. His stuff is amazing and beautiful. Don’t have any griddle recs since I’ve never gotten into them. As for a bbq grill, I think the big green egg is the best you can buy with its lifetime warranty. But if it’s for the cabin and you don’t want to worry about someone making off with it. I’d say just a good old fashioned Webber kettle works just fine. Roller suitcases I don’t know: I’ve been using my goruck bag and a leather duffle from Pendleton. I love your list, my friend! I hope the above helps you in your future BIFL searches and acquisitions!

Looking for sweaters like this?
These is the type of sweater you get from grandma perfectly crafted and hand made. Pendleton has some of these type of wool sweaters with different patterns, . You can probably search for them in online stores (Amazon, ebay, Alibaba etc.). You may not get exactly those patterns but you might see other patterns you like.

Women's professional/officewear?
Mostly pay attention to material. Linen, wool, 100% cotton. Check for sturdy stitching/good construction. Avoid anything synthetic if you really wanna BIFL (polyester is the worst). I have a vintage Pendleton blazer made of wool that is BEAUTIFUL (tbf I rarely wear it bc I work in a relaxed dress code office) but and I know it will last forever so it is my never-letting-go blazer. Silky tops made of polyester look cool but will not hold up; tops made of real silk (or cotton sateen) will. LL Bean, Pendleton, Eileen Fisher, Anne Taylor seem good, but I mostly shop thrift/vintage + make my own clothes so I can’t recommend a ton of brands specifically, just material tips :)

Men’s fashion brands
Nothing lasts forever no matter the quality. Also it depends on how you use the clothes, be it everyday or casual, for work, events etc. You can check for brands like Ralph Lauren (look out for the purple labels), barbour, L.L bean, Brook brother, pendleton flannels, everlane in stores (Amazon, Alibaba, ebay or wherever you make your purchases).

A cozy blanket to last as long as my beloved one
We call our Pendleton blanket “the blanket I don’t regret buying” as in “Hey, would you make sure to pack the blanket I don’t regret buying for the outdoor concert tonight?” If you ever are in the PNW, you can visit Pendleton (the city) or… another factory in Washington right next to the Columbia in the gorge… forget the city name…and there are great factory tours and a bunch of “scratch and dent” seconds blankets. Because their standard of quality is so high, the discounted blanket may have a flaw the size of a pin prick. A good blanket for a good price, or pay full price and know the blanket is essentially flawless.

Need a bedspread that my husband and I both love, opposite sleeping styles
I would highly suggest cotton or wool. We use a Pendleton wool camp blanket in our camper and love it. The wool gives some weight, but it's breathable. At home, we have a woven cotton bed blanket and I often throw another small quilt or something over my side when I need more warmth. I'm considering getting a merino blanket to layer under the cotton bed spread.

I second Pendleton. There is very little like them - still made in America (although most of Pendleton's other products have gone abroad!); they are very well made with lots of design choices and will last and last. Because they're so well made and robust I even used one as a picnic blanket. Once you've got one you'll never get rid of it!

Best blanket/comforter for hot sleepers?
They're definitely not itchy, but what is soft for one person might be scratchy for another. That said, Pendleton is very soft compared to other wools. The only thing softer might be an alpaca wool blanket. Which has the same qualities but the benefits of alpaca. Unfortunately, Pendleton does not make a pack of wool blankets.. As for dog durability, a Pendleton blanket would last for a long time, they are durable. But I can see that a dog would eventually wear through it.

Bombas socks. They’re luxurious. He will throw out all his other socks. Nice knives like Wusthoff. There is also a pilot’s pen that you can use in space, and the ink never dries up no matter which angle. I thought that would be the stupidest gift, but my boyfriend and father both bought them independently. Golf clubs or a gift card to a golf course if he’s into it. A Pendleton blanket. If he’s into cars, you could get him an experience where he drives a fancy sports car around the track. A grill or smoker if he likes that sort of thing.

Not sure what kind of fashion he’s into, but if he collects sneakers, the Nike Jordans are pretty cool. Anyone at a store that sells them would give a good recommendation. A Pendleton blanket might be up his alley. Or something from Norrona if he is the Boulder/outdoorsy type. If he likes fishing, he could probably use a good lure or a kayak. If he is somewhere that has a pool, my younger cousin got this blow up float that you can play beer pong on that he LOVES. Or you could go the “you need this appliance route.” An Eufy robot vacuum would run a little over $100 on Amazon and was my 21 stepdaughter’s favorite gift this year. Some nice knives could also be a winner or a really soft plush throw blanket.
