  Glasses. UK/EU. Timeless and Classic shape.

  In a lot of ways the cheap acetate glasses you can get for like $6 are better than high quality glasses you could have bought 20 years ago. They're light, durable, have a little flex, and all in all they will last a long time. A lot of high end glasses now are made at the same places and it's really just branding, although some of them have pretty good warranties. I had a pair of persols that got loose after like 5 years and they fixed them and polished them and they looked like new when I got them back. I've heard Maui Jim is the same. Not that I would be in to this, but my mom has a pair of real turtle shell sunglasses that her mom bought back in like the 40's. So apparently they last a long time.

  Best glasses frame brand

  Jacques Marie Mage makes the best looking and most durable frames on the market. They are a bit on the heavy side, as most of them are thick acetate with 18k gold rims on the inside. Typically 800-1200 per piece. I have 3 pairs and they are my favorite brand. I collect sunglasses, so I consider myself something of an expert, and here are the other brands I love: Matsuda(unmatched quality and durability), Thom Browne, Persol, Barton Perreira, Oliver Peoples, Moscot(like a cheaper Jacques Marie Mage), Masahiro Maruyama(very artsy but beautiful), Balmain, Dior(the last two have surprisingly great frames) Get a pair of JMMs, stomach the $900 expense, and you’ll never own a better piece of eyewear

  Maui Jims with glass lenses. Best glasses I’ve ever owned due to the lenses and high quality hinges. Their newer glasses with plastic lenses are trash. Honorable mention might be Persol, but they’re now owned by Luxottica.

  If you want something durable get ansi certified. If you want something fashionable and high quality I'd go with persol personally, but they'll only be BIFL if you take care of them

  What’s your budget? Some ideas: A really nice pair of slippers or boat shoes. Look at quoddy or similar brands. Cool pair of retro or deadstock sunglasses from brands like persol or Rayban. A classic watch. Something unique. A cool sculpture or painting. Something that feels meaningful to him. Could even be a nice framed classic movie poster. All of these ideas range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

  Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending

  Last 4 months, I rewaxed my 30 years old Barbour that used to be my dad's, changed temples on my Oliver Peoples prescription glasses I have had since 2018 and changed lenses on my Persol sunglasses I have had since 2017. I have shoe trees for my Sebago boat shoes that I purchased in 2021. Despite wearing them at least 6 months a year, they still look new, no doubt thanks to the frequent conditioning and changing laces when they break. If done well, BIFL is the opposite of consumerism.
