Got a Peugeot Pepper Mill for Xmas and it doesn't work well.
My older one is like that, I have to invert it, whack it, then turn it back and grind. Send to feed in one peppercorn and then I have to repeat the process. It's a huge pain. My spouse bought one of those cheap grinders that come with the peppercorns and it grinds 100% of the time.

Peugeot Paris Chef and the Skeppshult cast iron mills are the ones that take hard seeds without fuss... they just get on with it. The real killer is weak internals that round off when you hit fenugreek. You want hardened stainless or ceramic for the grinding parts because zinc alloy chips and then everything goes sideways. A solid one piece metal body also matters since stainless housings take the torque, while acrilic tubes crack the first time you really lean into tough seeds The adjustment ring should have proper metal detents. The friction collar style slips over time and suddenly you get powder when you wanted something coarse Acrilic anything is trouble.

Pepper fanatic here. Have multiple Peugot (with different varieties of peppercorns) in my kitchen and have gifted them to many family/friends. Absolutely agree on their quality and BIFL quality. That said, I many times prefer the $20-25 Cole & Mason I bought for our work lunchroom. Very sturdy/ great craftsmanship, and a solid grind. Obviously, you can “dial it in”, but I find that the Peugot makes pepper “dust” with ease. The Cole & Mason makes larger pepper “flakes” which I sometimes prefer.

While Peugeot really is good for ita grinding, the amount of control you have on coarseness, any pepper mill with a bottom opening might leave some residue just because it is an opening. What helps, after grinding, gently shake, and, if you really want to, turn it upside down.

While I still use a Peugeot grinder that is now 30 years old and gets constant a workout, I recently bought a Crushgrind Billund pepper grinder as a gift and have high hopes for it. Ceramic grinding mechanism and an upright style that doesn’t leave pepper dust on the countertop. The company is a few decades old and the reviews are solid, so it should be a good buy.

What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?
Alright hear me out. This isn’t perfect, but brands that only make one thing, or are primarily known for one thing, is a good indicator if not necessarily BIFL then at least usually pretty good quality. Cases in point: - Red Wing Shoes (at least the heritage line) - Leatherman (pocket tool) - Le Creuset (only cast iron, their original product) - Darn Tough (socks) - Peugeot (only their grinders) - Zassenhaus (grinders) - Moccamaster (coffee makers) All quality brands start out by doing one thing and doing that one thing very very well. The well run brands stick to this promise and avoid the enshittification that happens when branching into product lines that they don’t really understand to make a quick buck. That’s why one shouldn’t buy anything other than cast iron from Le Creuset or grinders from Peugeot, everything else they make is average at best, making more money because some management consultant has recommended that they grow their brand value through diffusion products.

I’ve had my Peugeot grinder for a couple years. It’s solid, but it definitely leaves a mess of pepper dust wherever I set it. I ended up buying a small ceramic plate to sit under it in the counter to collect all the pepper it kept releasing onto the counter. If OP’s number one consideration (as they’ve stated) is a grinder that doesn’t leave a mess, then the Peugeot grinder might not be for them.

Peugeot is considered the best, but - like every other similar constructed grinder - will „leave a mess“. Have mine for about 30 years. There are different constructed mills available, where the grinder comes with a lid and is rested on the container side. The mess is a result of residues left in combination with grinding into cooking pans or meals or pots that moisten the remains.

My wooden Peugeot is doing fine after 15 some years. Never had a problem with dampness. I’m guessing for the plastic or metal ones, they could leave the top off. Had a roomie that would lose lids to everything. Or the steam gets trapped inside if using over the stove top of something emitting like a steam engine. Wood will eventually absorb it, while plastic or metal will trap it inside.

I have had the following for years if not decades, and have never regretted the price: All Clad pans, Vitamix, Portmeirion plates and ramekins (dishwasher, fridge, freezer and oven safe; they have literally been dropped on wood floors and been totally fine), Kyocera ceramic knives, Wüstof 10 inch chef's knife, Vollrath Wear-Ever Cookie Sheet Pans, Peugeot pepper mill (solid as a rock), Kitchenaid mixer, Hamilton Beach Heavy Duty food processor, Williams Sonoma gold pans, all metal apple slicer, all-metal juicer, all metal Microplane, metal bowl set, 10 piece glass bowl set, metal whisk, set of 3 plain wooden spoons, wooden cutting boards, all silicone spatulas (handle coated as well) Basically, if you find a kitchen tool that has no plastic anywhere, and is made of good quality metal, get it. Also refer to America's Test Kitchen recommendations, as they really put kitchen tools to the test. Also, I almost hate to say it, but my Tesla Model 3 has lasted 8 years now, and my only maintenance needed has been to replace the air filter, windshield washing fluid, and tires. Also, with every SW update, the car gets better/more features. Not buy for life, but buy for a decade at least. I may not stay with Tesla in the future, but I will be staying with electric cars, for the super low cost of maintenance and acceleration alone.

We use simpler (and cheaper) cloth napkins in a cheery color because they’re more fun and less fuss -kitchenaid pasta maker: fun once or twice; too much of a hassle otherwise Finally, I’d recommend using something like Zola to manage your registry. If folks buy stuff directly from them, you can choose to delay shipping the items until it’s convenient for you, or use the store credit for something else. If you have friends who have used it recently, ask them for their referral link to get them a little $ bonus.

Your BIFL item from third world and developing countries?
The Sinai area of Egypt has a strategic reserve of long body W123 Mercedes diesel cars. No idea how much one would be and how hard it would be to exfiltrate. Further south they have all those Peugeot 504 cars from the factory that got the tooling from France at some stage. Also worth a look. It is pretty common I think for people to go to India to buy the Enfield clones they sell there. Some people even ride them home.

All nice and fine that they're good products, but apart from convenience and ad campaigns, I think the Peugeot pepper mill is a much better buy. One of the oldest patented designs on the market, that shape is extremely iconic and they are made in France for roughly the same money.

Sorry for bringing this back to life. The Fletcher mills salt grinder grinds using plastic adding a little extra plastics to your food. I would not use a Fletcher mills with salt, you are better off getting 2 pepper grinders and using 1 for salt even though they don't recommend it on their website. The stainless steel spring inside the salt grinder corrodes anyways, so it doesn't make much difference. The peugeot grinders are both stainless steel for salt and pepper, but they do suck in comparison as they don't hold a consistent grind size and often the top nut unthreads just from simple use. Very sad quality in that regard.

If you go with something else, just make sure the burrs are METAL, ceramic burrs are going to be cheap junk And having a separate salt grinder is kind of redundant, freshly grinding your salt doesn't do anything. Just have table salt for the table and baking, and kosher salt for cooking.

Some good articles for Europeans?
Although the sub is very US centric, most BIFL brands in general are European, with some notable exceptions like Patagonia (which you can find in Europe). Kitchen: Demeyere, Le Creuset and Staub. I don't think there's better for cooking than these 3. Rösle kitchen tools. Italian coffee mills and machines from several high end brands. Peugeot pepper mills. Even popular Silestone counter tops are Spanish. Appliances: Miele, Siemens, Bosch... Clothing: (There's a thousand brands, but to name a few BIFL ones) Sunspel, Zegna, Logo Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Brioni, Falke (although Socks are not really BIFL, they are for sure better than the over hyped Darn Tough around here). Luxury items: Any serious watch brands or luxury hand bags are European, just name a brand. Depending on your budget, you have a lot to choose from. And then depending on other niche stuff that you might be looking for, there's probably some local producer from Italy, Spain or Portugal that will have it in word class quality.

Electric pepper mill
Just bought the Peugeot Night Electric pepper and salt grinder set. Might be worth a look. Cole & Mason also makes an electric pepper and salt grinder, but their capacity is rather small. The Peugeot has a decent capacity.
