  Toothbrush with cleanable (sanitized?) charging case or cover

  My Phillips sonicare diamond clean has a charging cup and travel case! I’ve had it a few years now and I love it (it’s [this one](https://www.target.com/p/philips-sonicare-diamondclean-smart-9300-electric-toothbrush/-/A-91735623?preselect=89376318#lnk=sametab), I got mine at Costco). I have a similar problem bathroom and my personal rec would be to put the charger in another room (bedroom on a dresser works well!). This keeps it away from the toilet but removes the possibility of mold growth from keeping it in an enclosed space. The cup is dishwasher safe and I find it keeps any drips contained well!

  How good is the philips oneblade?

  I'm clean-shaven. I own a OneBlade and a Braun Series 7, and I love them both. I'm just now ordering a second OneBlade, to store in my toiletries bag so it'll be there when I travel. The one I have resides in one bathroom, while the Braun resides in the other. I rarely do so, but I can attain a perfect shave by starting with the OneBlade and finishing with the Braun. I think that I need a OneBlade in the the other bathroom.

  Electric Razor with no Stubble? (OneBlade or epilier?)

  My understanding is that electric razors simply can't shave as close as a safety razor or similar. Safety razors are more fuss, but they can just get smoother than electric ones. That's certainly been my experience anyways - I've used both a Henson safety razor and a Phillips OneBlade and I use the Phillips more often for convenience's sake (and less irritation for me personally) but I definitely can't shave as close and the hair does grow back faster for me. I'm transmasc nonbinary from a family with shitty facial hair genes so "faster" is still not that fast for me and there's not a ton of it to get through, but I usually would touch up every other day with the OneBlade instead of only maybe twice a week with a safety razor. I would say if your hair is so thick that it's clogging up a safety razor that fast, a OneBlade probably ain't gonna do what you need. There may not be one solution that's perfect for every part of your body here. There may also be some trade-offs depending on your goals. For example, waxing, sugaring, or use of an epilator could work really well for you in some areas, but if you're getting electrolysis or laser, or doing home IPL, you actually need that little bit of hair under the skin and would have to stick to shaving/potentially put up with a little more fuss shorter-term for the longer-term more permanent results. If those are all way out of your budget right now, an epilator (or sugaring/waxing) might be better for your body hair in terms of smoother results, slower regrowth, etc, but my understanding is that epilators, waxing, anything that really rips the hair out at the root is not suitable for full-on beard hair because they're so thick and the roots are so deep it can cause a lot of skin trauma and risk infection and other complications. I have a few thoughts on how you might want to go here: 1) You could stick to a safety razor just for your face and use an epilator on the body (caveat being that I don't know if they're safe/viable for intimate areas but it would at least minimize the areas needing shaving) 2) You could stick to a safety razor for the face and do waxing or sugaring for the body, either yourself or having a professional do it; upside - lasts longer than shaving and should make hair grow in thinner/slower over time, downside - more painful than shaving, expensive over time especially if you have to pay a pro to get good results, and the hair does have to grow out a fair bit between sessions so the wax can grab onto it (I assume it's similar with sugaring but am less familiar with that one myself) 3) You could keep using the safety razor everywhere (although personally I wouldn't use the same one for my face & pits/intimate areas at least not without aggressive sanitation and a fresh blade in between), and (assuming your skin and hair tones are suitable; optimal candidates have light skin and dark hair) invest in a good home IPL device to help thin/slow/stop the body hair over time - it's not as powerful and needs more maintenance treatment than laser, but many people still get very good results. Expect to pay quite a bit up-front, but potentially save money long-term vs. getting pro laser on your whole body. Caveat: the IPL would mainly control the body hair. These devices are generally not advised for facial hair on AMAB folks, partially for safety reasons and partially because they're just not strong enough. The face would likely still need electrolysis or professional laser down the line and shaving in the interim, but you could save a lot of hassle on the body hair with a good IPL device over time. 4) You could go with #1 or #2 and prioritize saving towards electrolysis on the facial hair first to have it permanently gone ASAP, since that's going to be some of the hardest hair to deal with and most visible day to day. r/HairRemoval is probably a more helpful sub for you - you may need a "mixed methods" approach for different parts and may need to consider what kind of trade-offs you can deal with where, especially when thinking about shorter-term annoyances for longer-term more permanent gains with certain options.

It just died on me after a little over 5 years… I’ll definitely be buying another one. The battery alone lasted me a month of traveling in Sweden bc I forgot the charger. My danish told me the same things btw and I never had an issue later on

The P.One blows it away in a tiny size, crazy battery life (months!), and zero obsolescence because there's no soldered in LiOn battery that's degrading every charge until the entire system is junk (hello several $hundred dollar sonicare system that I've replaced every 3 years).

  What was the best purchase you made this year?

  Bought Philips One (single AAA battery) tooth brushes for the family several years ago. They're all still going strong, replaced the heads a couple times, and the batteries last months. It's sonic, just like sonicare. Also, because it doesn't have a soldered in LiOn battery, it doesn't degrade or lose charge with time. Pop a new AAA in and it's just as good as new. Definitely BIFL so far!

  That Veritasium video is so wrong lol, technology connections has a really good video that explains why the idea of a "planned obsolescence lightbulb cartel" is bullshit With incandescent lighting, the biggest expense was never the lightbulb. It was always the electricity. To make a lightbulb last longer, you beef up the filament and run it at a colder temperature. Consequently, this makes you use WAY more energy per lumen of light created, and it's no Bueno. So when the lightbulb "cartel" got together, they were not meeting to scheme about the sale of lightbulbs lol. They were actually meeting at the request of power companies who needed the manufacturers to standardize on efficiency.

I've had the Phillips for about 10 years. It still works fine and does the job, but after all those years the battery doesn't hold its charge for very long, I have to charge it every few uses. I thought I'd try the Braun, 2 years ago. It's just better - technology has come a long way in those 8 years. It's more comfortable in the hand, more convenient to use, feels generally more solid. On the flip side, it's got some design issues. For instance there's a wheel to choose guard length, which I like over Phillip's slider, but the numbers on it have worn off, so it's hard to see what length you're using. So for durability, Phillips. For performance, Braun. What I do now is I leave the foil shaver on the Phillips and use Braun for everything else.

  Oh dear haha that’s 100% one of those random unbranded Chinese craps off Amazon. They string together two random English words for their company name and roll with it. I’ve had pleasant experiences with the Philips pill remover, I use it on my vintage jackets because my scarves mess it up. It was fairly cheap. I doubt dry cleaners use it though, I’d probably go with whatever they use but I’m doubting it’s cheap.

  Those are E10 base, C6 fluted-cone incandescent Christmas light bulbs. They are single-wire, series-wired, low-voltage bulbs. 12 bulbs on 110-120 volt power supply gives 9-10 volts per bulb. These vintage fluted-cone Christmas lights were popular from 1930s through 1950s, gradually replaced by parallel-wired, double-wire 110-120 volt Christmas lights. Parallel-wired Christmas lights have heavier/uglier wiring, but it's easier to find and replace burned-out light bulbs. My thrifty parents inherited Grand Dad's 1910s hand-blown Christmas ornaments and his 1930s C6 fluted-cone Christmas lights. We used those into the 1970s. I was the only kid willing to track through the bulbs and keep them lit each year. We would put up a fresh-cut 7-foot fir tree 2 weeks before Christmas, and used 5 strands of Christmas lights, unplugging it every night and lighting it all day for 3 weeks a year. Use-cycling those 60 light bulbs in a living room left unheated overnight was a worse-case scenario for miniature incandescent light bulb life-span. I'd find and replace 1-3 bulbs each year. They did alright for 20-40 year old light bulbs.

  Philips is legit. You get what you pay for. I bought into their Hue smart lighting nearly 15 years ago, and to date, the only thing I've had to replace is the hub (and that was very recently.) My oldest bulbs have been run between 10-12 hours a day, every day, and despite now being outside as my garage lights, are still good.

  Dad would put Christmas lights on the bushes outside the house. It would snow - deeply! - and for a few hours the lights would glow beautifully under the snow but eventually the lights would melt all the snow around them. I loved those old C9 multicolored lights. The best thing about them - they included white lights in the multicolored string. This made the lights brighter. When small fairy lights came along, the manufacturer of small multicored lights did not include white bulbs, so they were darker looking than the cheerful C9s.

  None of these tower fans will make your room as cool as AC, but you’ll definitely feel the difference on a hot day. Dreo tends to feel like it circulates the air better overall, Levoit is friendlier for long-term use and cleaning, and Philips is mostly quiet and unobtrusive. Pick based on what YOU hate more, noise or weak airflow.

  Water proof electric razor?

  I have a Philips x5004. Only had it a year, so not sure if it’s BIFL. And it’s not my primary shaving device, i usually use a shavette (straight razor style with disposable blades) and only have the electric shaver for when I’m in a hurry. But it stands up well to the shower, is easy to disassemble to clean, and replacement heads are available if I would need them.

  The OneBlade works for me. The #1 guard is what I use for the 5 o-clock look, and no guard to shave my neck. But it’s not BIFL. I had one die. All things with embedded batteries die. Fortunately the new one was compatible with the old blades (I tend to stock up when I see a good price).

  I asked my dentist that a couple of months ago, we're in Germany for clarification. She said she can recommend Phillips and Oral B in general. It should have a mode to massage your gums to stimulate blood flow and strengthen it. She also said to go with the original replacement heads as the quality of the cheap ones is questionable at best (many cheap ones just cut the bristles while the original ones are rounded off). I have gotten myself a Oral B last week and so far am very happy about it.

  I do think the vertuo is a good machine for making a specific style of coffee. But it is not bifl. The pods are expensive and proprietary. I like the Phillips line of automatic coffee machines. Not bifl either, but more cost effective and a bigger range of coffee styles. If your just an American style coffee drinker. A coffee press is your best bifl option

  when it comes to picking a travel electric toothbrush, the cleaning power is almost the same across the board so the real differences are in how travel-friendly the design is. charging is usually the biggest factor, usb-c is way more convenient since you can use the same cable as your phone instead of carrying a base. battery powered ones are simpler but you’ll be hunting for aaa batteries if you forget. the next big thing is how you actually pack it. without a case the bristles get nasty pretty fast, so a solid cover is usually better than the foldable gimmick ones that feel flimsy. noise and size matter too, some of the more powerful oral-b models get loud in a quiet hotel room, while slimmer sonic brushes like philips are easier to toss in a bag. when i was comparing, i ended up checking out this site called reddit vetted where someone’s compiled actual reddit reviews into lists you can filter by price, charging type or portability. way easier than digging through dozens of scattered threads. quip is compact and cheap but honestly closer to a powered manual brush than a full clean. suri keeps popping up because it’s usb-c charged and slim, plus more eco-friendly. philips and oral-b both make “travel” editions that are reliable but usually take up a bit more room. the combo that seems to win most people over is slim handle, usb-c charging, and a sturdy case.

  Very pleased with Philips XXL. Use it about 10 times more than the big oven (that is used for more than 1-2 people or lots of oven dishes) - the pizza insert is perfect and makes great pizzas in under 8 minutes! The oven will do it in 20-22 with 10 minutes warm-up, do a worse job (more dry than crisp) and using 4000w in half af hour.. Very good for all "small" things!

  Go with the diamond care and don't waste your money. I have had a nightmare with the 9900 model. I have had 3 fail and most recently it was just out of warranty and Philips would not repair/replace. They did offer a discount on the diamond care 9000, so guess they don't even support the 9900 model.

  Oh boy, I am going to get downvoted to **hell** for this, but... • [Razer BlackShark V2 X](https://a.co/d/3iVvLHa) Was recommended to be from a friend's brother that claimed to have played in PSL for R6. They recommended them to me, because I played R6, Hunt: Showdown, and a few other games that required good Audio Cue reactions with those friends. I've enjoyed them for the better part of the last 5 years. Excellent bass, the Dolby Sound Card, and 7.1 Channel Audio would be the selling points for these. As they have aged, I have noticed that there is "scratching" or "static" that occurs while you are turning the Volume Knob, but only **while** turning; the other thing is that one of the Ear Cup Pads is coming off, but it's been "coming off" for like a year and hasn't been an issue so, ymmv but for the price I'm not upset. Some people have told me, regarding my own headset, that it's too tight and is uncomfortable to use for more than one or two songs. I really enjoy this amount of pressure I guess, I'm willing to put this information out there and admit I might be the odd one out. At least you know up front. I will run it for 4+ hours at a time and my only complaint, personally, is that they can get pretty sweaty after a long session. $38 isn't a bad price, most Storefronts will have them priced at $50-$60 brand new. I just grabbed the first Amazon Link though, I'm sure you could shop around and find a better deal if you tried. Alternatively, if you're willing to spend a bit more coin, you could opt for a pair of [Philips SHP9500](https://a.co/d/gLDAGqa) open-back headphones. The sound profile is significantly better for your average audiophile, but in order to achieve certain clarity you do give up some of the Bass *thump*-iness; hence the open-back design. And these, I doubt will get me in trouble with the informed buyers of r/BIFL and the folks over at r/audiophile.

  Mine is a Philips sunrise alarm clock and is several years old now. It was one of the first like it, but there are all kinds of Philips models now, ranging from ~$30-250, and also knockoffs. I don’t use any features other than a slowly brightening light over the course of a half hour which is my alarm. At the thirty minute mark, I could have nature noises play, but I don’t bother with that part. If you google sunrise alarm clock, all sorts of options new and used come up, and you should be able to find one that matches your needs and budget.

  Yes. I ended up buying the Philips Bodygroom 7000 Series (I'll put the full name below from Amazon). I picked it up during "Prime Day" in July for $48.96. I see it listed for $69.96 now on Amazon, but I suspect may go on sale for a similar price for Black Friday / Cyber Monday (if it doesn't, I'm sure several competing products will). I like it well enough. I don't shave every day, or even weekly. Mostly when I think about it and when the hair gets longer. Coincided with me running and working out more, and eating better. So feeling better about myself, and it's nice to trim things up now that I'm getting in better shape. I'm happy enough with the results. I don't try to get cue ball smooth or anything like that (probably need to get out the razor for that). Just trimmed up all around and short enough. I was also looking at, but did not buy, the Philips Norelco OneBlade Intimate. The Bodygroom (which I bought) seems more robust to me, but then again I've never tried the OneBlade Intimate trimmer, I'm just going from what they look like. The OneBlade is a bit cheaper. I do wish the Bodygroom had a USB-C charger input, and not the proprietary cord thing you have to use. A bit annoying but not a huge deal. **Full name of what I bought (at least as listed on Amazon):** Philips Bodygroom 7000 Series, Showerproof Groin and Body Trimmer for Men, Precise Body Grooming, Adjustable Comb, Safe Even Below The Belt, 80 Min.   Philips 461160 40 Watt Equivalent 5000K, non dimmable 5.5W draw only i've used these in public hallways in apt complex since 2016. any other off brand is KO'ed after 1-2 years, all fixturesare open and NOT enclosed. these run for 16hrs a day, some have lasted a good 6+ years, so that's close to at least 35,000 hours. note that CA updated their laws to ban bulbs like this b/c it doesn't meet the "lumens per watt" minimum of 80 LPW specific to basic LED bulbs. Philips also changed it to 450 lumen/6.5W (40W) so that's 69.2 LPW instead of the 81.8 of the previous version. if you're not in CA, here's the more recent version. if you're in CA, find a way to ship it to a border town.   The Best Air Purifier for Home now? Have you noticed a huge difference since you started using them?

  First off, "best" is whatever has the highest CFM rating. Whatever pushes the most air is pretty much best. Corsi Rosenthal boxes are "best" as they can easily push 1000 CFM. But in reality you choose based on other metrics, such as price range, availability of filters, price of filters, how often they have to be changed, how quiet they are and so on. I picked a Philips 4200 Pureprotect, to me this was best, as it was high CFM rating, auto setting and very quiet. While also having new filters available in my market for years to come. And personally I've tested it at home, where I don't notice much of a difference as air qualiy was pretty good in the first place. But also in the homes of friends who have dogs and I have asthma and react to them. Had a friend set it up a few days before his birthday so the air would be properly cleaned for a few days when I got there and it made a huge difference. Usually I notice symptoms after just a few minutes, this time I could spend hours at his house with minimal symptoms. But even if my unit is a quite expensive, good and quiet unit it still doesn't get close to the Corsi Rosenthal DIY boxes in terms of how much air is purified. Hope this helps, just keep filter price and exchange rate as well as availability in mind when you buy one and you'll be fine. And remember more air is better, filtration efficiency matters a lot less than just the air volume.

  I, too, rec that. I have the Philips, but don't remember which model. But it's the basic one with radio, but no stupid wifi or fancy crap. It does one thing and does it well. It's great if you have to wake before the sunrise. It slowly starts creeping light in, and I have it set so the classical radio station fades in along with it. It works in reverse, too, for falling asleep. In that mode, you don't want to be clinging onto great music or something interesting when trying to sleep because that will distract you, so I have fall-asleep mode set on boring NPR so they'll just being going on about soybean export tariff policy and, next thing you know, your in dreamland. Probably dreaming about stupid shit like soybeans, but you won't remember it anyway so that's okay and you won't pop awake and go "omigosh - I better get out my dream journal!". Anyways Philips, yeah good product. I wonder if they are the same people who do the screwdrivers, but probably not.

  Yep this was a game changer for me. I picked up an old Philips alarm clock with an incandescent light bulb in that gradually starts getting brighter 30 mins before the alarm goes off. As a bonus the 100w bulb gives off some heat so helps with those cold mornings. I hate jarring alarm noises so I keep it it on silent and pair that with a vibrating wristwatch. I haven't struggled getting out of bed since, and I used to be dreadful!

  Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light HF3670/60 It costs a pretty penny but worth it. I bought a cheaper sunrise alarm that was highly rated but it didn't help. You get what you pay for. Buy once, cry once! This one has a sunset option which helps with wind down. If you're a side sleeper, highly recommend setting up mirrors on the opposite wall to reflect the light. I've slept through the alarm a few times from pure exhaustion because I was facing the 'wrong' way lol.

  Best air purifier for home

  First off, Corsi Rosenthal Boxes if you're in the US is an easy homemade solution that doesn't look pretty but beats almost any commercially available air purifiers. So look in to those first if you're in the US. But figuring out best ain't really that simple, because one that covers a 28 m2 area might require that air purifier to run at full speed in order to do so. Generating a lot of noise. So you might want something that can filter a far larger area instead so the fan can run at low speeds. Then you have to consider the price of replacement filters. But also you're going to own it for a lot of years, so long term availability of replacement filters can also end up being a big deal. It would obviously really suck owning a unit only to figure out you can no longer get new filters. Personally I looked over all sorts of different units, but in the end I ended up with a Philips 4200. It ticked all boxes for me, it covers a much larger area than I need but that allows me to keep the fan speeds low enough that they're not annoying. Filters are moderately priced and last over a year, and they're available.

  Low light, as annoying as possible, alarm clock

  I have one of the simplest Philips wake-up lights on the market. I've had it for 11 years now and it's still going strong, you can tone down the brightness of the clock numbers so it's really dark at night. And it has only one sound: a beepbeepbeep that gets louder over the first 5 sets, then just stays at that "you're gonna wake up the neighbour" volume until you either snooze it or turn it off. Oh and you can set the wake-up light intensity, too. If I leave it on max the light will wake me up 20 minutes before the beep does. So I set it on 8 instead of 10. Also nice that you can use it as a small light at night, should one try to find their glasses in the middle of the night, or their nightly antibiotic pill, that you frikkin dropped because, hey, it's the middle of the night :') Enough light to search, not enough to wake up your partner.

  Budget-wise I like the Phillips One, the re-chargeable kind! There’s not much that can break, no pressure sensors or different modi. If you want it to spend more, I can recommend the Io series from Oral-B, I just took one apart to replace the battery and it seems sturdy, plus everything is easily accessible.

  Philips shp9500 or 9600 are probably the best for directional sounds open backed pretty comfy but you cannot replace the pads or headstrap when they eventually get nasty or start falling apart. Sennheiser Hd280 pros, Audio technica ath-m40x. These are both closed headphones so the directional sound isn't the best but the cables, pads, and headstrap are all replaceable and customizable they have a very durable design.

I replaced that one with the cheapest Phillips I could find, and that fucker has been going strong for 2 years.

  I get them at my Costco. You can also buy them directly from Philips online or locally at Target or best buy and Walmart if they have them in stock in your area. Walgreens, Rite-Aid and CVS carry them as well. I don’t use the app so I can give my bush heads a little longer than the app tells you. I also don’t switch them when the brush tells me, if I see they are still strong enough, I use them longer without a problem even if it pisses off the brush stick. The thing is, the app also tells you like clockwork that you need new tips so you can buy them on par so I skipped connecting the brush via Bluetooth. My best advice is to skip connecting the brush to the app for longevity of the brush itself.   Sonicare vs OralB - which one is worth the money?

  I have had 5 sonicares over 15 years. 2010-2016: I got a twin pack for Christmas. I gave one away. The other one still worked but I wanted to upgrade at the end of 2016. 6100. 2016-2024: it stopped charging. 9000. 2024: It still works but I wanted to upgrade so now it’s a travel brush. 4100 2025: I just got the 9900. A few tips: Don’t leave it submerged in water for too long. I have read that the screws in the handle become loose if you regularly tap the handle against the sink to get the water off.

  Currently I'm using the Philips Sonicare Cordless Power Flosser 3000. Previously I was also happy with the Waterpik Cordless Pearl (model WF-13CD010) water flosser. I tried some other portable models from Waterpik, but I was very disappointed in how weak the streams were. The WF-13 is the only one from them that I liked. The Sonicare feels more powerful than the WF-13 was, but not by a ton and it does cost a bit more. If the extra cost isn't a concern, I recommend the Sonicare.

  Ignore the comments saying items need to be literally for life, it's not what the sub is for and no matter how many times people point out that the subs rules allow items that don't last a lifetime people parrot the same "ITS NOT BIFL!!!" BIFL is about finding items that are best in class and last longer than the competition. No rechargable battery will last forever but a BIFL rechargeable battery would be something like an eneloop For a rechargeable razor yeah I'd say 8-10 years is BIFL for that category, since most shit the bed after about 3 years

  I have had to replace the comb (plastic bit that adjusts the length) on the 7000 model but otherwise it's about 10 years so far including surviving a trip in the washing machine. Highly recommend for the single reason that it has a built in vacuum that catches almost all the hairs. I actually bought 2 so I can leave one at work. I went through multiple cheaper ones in the years prior.

Mine had a fabric case so it goes in a small cardboard box with my chargers and miscellaneous cables when I go travelling with it. I had an oral b before but the soniccare makes my teeth feel better. In the eyes of the dentist, both are probably good.

  I’ve been traveling with the Quip for over a year now and honestly, it’s been perfect for short trips. Super slim, lightweight, and the travel cover doubles as a stand which is clutch in hotel bathrooms. It runs on a AAA battery so no charging needed, which is actually a plus if you don’t want to deal with cables. That said, the clean isn’t as intense as something like a Sonicare, but it definitely beats a manual brush or those hotel freebies. If you want something more powerful and don’t mind the bulk, the Philips One by Sonicare (rechargeable version) is another solid option. USB-C Too.

  I have a Phillips Sonicare, and I upgraded my fiancé to one and it’s so convenient. They come with travel cases that hold one handle, but two heads, so we only have to take a single handle and charger for both of us. Also the heads are sold at Costco, and go on sale pretty regularly. I got my handle almost a decade ago, and his is at least 5 years old. Maybe we’ll upgrade soon because mine seems to not hold charge as well anymore, but it’s easily worth the money.

  Phillips sonicare do a fantastic job of cleaning your teeth, but they are not BIFL in my opinion. I've had two, and each one wound up the same. Within a year or two, the power button would get worn down to the point where the physical button underneath was showing and I couldn't turn it on/off anymore without difficulty. As far as I can tell there are no replacements either. It was very disappointing for an otherwise great product.

  Another vote for the Sonicare series, even though they do have their lemons. It sounds like Philips made some design changes a handful of years back on the internals though, just a heads up. From what I've managed to find, it sounds like the older models used a metal internal frame for the motor, motor shaft, and battery. This was swapped for a plastic one on the new, lower end model lines, which can wear/break more easily over time and lead to the shaft & motor becoming disconnected. My OG Sonicare from around 2010 lasted the better part of a decade before the battery gave out. It's replacements (2x pack of I believe 4000 series units from Costco) gave out at about 1.5 and 2 years respectively. I swapped to an OralB unit at that point, but hated the chonkier brush head so, so much, so I ended up splurging on another Philips, a Sonicare 7300. I have to say, the 7000 and 9000 series brushes feel much more solid, and seem to have more powerful motors as well. Could be psychosomatic, but I've passed the 2 year mark with the 7300 now and it's still running just as strong as day 1. Just my .02, but unless a serious Philips contender comes out of the woodwork, I don't see myself swapping away from them again anytime soon.

  I concur with Philips SonicCare but you have to use it properly in order for it to be BIFL. You gently run it over your teeth while it does the work for you. If you treat it like a traditional toothbrush it WILL break and you will have wasted your money.

  Cheap chinese-made sunrise alarm clocks are about as anti-BuyItForLife as you can get. I have a Philips HF3470 that I bought back in 2012. I've been using it every single day as an alarm and as a general light in my bedroom. **I haven't even changed the bulb. It's been 13 years!** The only reason I'm in the market for a new one now is because the buttons are starting to have issues. I may still try to repair it, but if I can't, my next option might just be to invest in Home Assistant and some affordable smart bulbs. This isn't an option for everyone, but I'm technically inclined. If you aren't, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Philips wake up light. It'll last.

  I just got the 6100 to replace a cheap bottom line sonicare from 10 years ago, I got it because I have gum disease and it has a gum setting or whitening. The gum setting actually has a short whitening spurt at the end. I really like it so far and highly recommend, even the step down would have been fine, I just wanted the brush intensity setting. I felt that anything higher was just flash with no substance. The brushes are also important, I chose C3 for gum care.

  I’ve had the most basic rechargeable 4000 series for like 5 years now. Still works like a champ. All those fancy alternate brushing patterns and connectivity seem silly. This buzzes every 15 seconds or something, and notifies when you’re brushing too hard, but otherwise: it’s on or off.

  I’m far from an expert. The first one I tried is the one I’m still using ~7 years later. Philips SmartSleep Wake Up Light. It’s much more expensive now than it was 7 years ago. I’m sure there are more budget friendly options that I don’t have experience with but I love the one I have.

  I own and have used both extensively. There are pros and cons to both. The Philips is generally pricier, and I believe the heads are as well. However, I have a smallish mouth and it just works better for me. I found that the Oral-B made me drool while brushing which was annoying. This is because the head itself is a little bit wider. However, I think the Oral-B would be able to take more abuse than the Philips brush. I've dropped several of the Philips in the past, and the impact can knock out the little magnet thing that it uses for movement. Fixing it can be a pain, and it still won't be just right.

  Men’s Electric Shaver Questions

  Second vote for Philips/Norelco shavers. I gave one to my dad (and got an identical one for myself) maybe 15 years ago. I’ve mostly moved on to a newer model but both still work and my dad loves his (he’s in his 80’s now). The only thing that is almost done is the battery but that’s to be expected. I honestly didn’t expect it to last 15 years. It still holds charge for a couple of shaves and the good thing is that it works wired too so it’s never going to die. Truly BIFL shavers.

  Men’s Electric Shaver Questions

  Older men typically have coarser hair than younger men. The questions I would be asking are: How often does he (intend to shave) How curly does his beard hair grow Then I would be saying: if he shaves daily or every other day, and/or has straight beard/head hair, then a midrange braun will serve him well for years. With regular replacement of the foil and cutter (2 years or so) If he has curly hair or shaves less frequently (3 days or more) I would recommend a higher end Philips/norelco with a similar replacement interval of the cutters/head. I fall into the second camp.

  What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?

  Controversial take but Sennheiser HD series headphones are overrated. Don’t get me wrong they’re very good, and if you buy them because you enjoy the way they sound over alternatives then go hard. However, for most people Philips SHP9500’s are a much better choice. Significantly cheaper, much more comfortable, still open back, fantastic (imo better than 6XX’s) sound quality, etc. I think literally everyone interested in audio should start with SHP9500’s unless they absolutely need closed back headphones. They are just incredible.

  Long-lasting LED bulb brand

  The issue with "wiring" can be a specific one that is easy rectify. If there is a loose screw terminal in the switch or the light socket, the bulb will receive pulsed electricity that it can't handle like you were flicking the switch thousands of times. I noticed this when I heard my switch buzzing in a quiet room. I tightened everything and now bulbs last in that lamp. The rest of the wire is a dumb solid metal that makes no difference. Overall the Philips filament bulbs make less heat, even non-Dubai, but they should still be used in an open fixture, which also lets more light through. Sometimes basic older models go on sale.

I dropped mine and it stopped working, so I couldn’t say with more experience but I think all this devices wear out due to the part that emits light naturally burning out. So in this case, it could be better to go with “buy what does an excellent job and lasts the longest/is the highest quality”. That’s why In felt comfortable sharing what worked for me even if it wasn’t for life (my body hair reduction was for life though).

  Living room dehumidifiers that will last a long time?

  I'll just point out that anything that generally reduces humidity can technically be a humidifier. I say this because I understand most humidifiers are a combination of heat and cooling devices in one that quickly collect moisture from the surrounding air. However, most cooling units will do this on their own during the cooling process. Combine this with a basic heat lamp (especially one that's pointed at an area of your home that tends to have extra moisture and you've basically got a dehumidifier. In other words: you might be able to setup something so you won't need one. It likely isn't an option in very damp situations, but definitely one thing to try. Heat lamps don't last more than a year or two, but they're not expensive. I usually go with a Philips 125 watt flood light. Until you're standing near (or under) it, you can't tell it's a heat lamp.

  Wow ten years, good for you! I like my Sonicare but I’ve gone through 4 in the past 5 years. I get the 4100, unsure if more expensive models have better longevity. My 9yo son also uses it so some of the problems have been from it getting dropped. But also the button has worn out from normal use and it started turning on/off on its own. Still recommend, just not really a BIFL item in my experience

  You’re in the UK so have more options, they sadly don’t seem to iron much here in the US.  If you have the space and budget, steam station irons are awesome.  LauraStar for megasplurge, Braun/Tefal as medium tier, and Philips on sale as an affordable option but it will still be good.  No experience of Rowenta but tons of bad Amazon reviews. They are basically the only steam station option in the US though.

  BIFL Cordless Beard Trimmer?

  I’ve had a Phillips Norelco MG5750 for nearly 10 years now and I swear by it. Kinda remarkable since it’s pretty cheap and the design hasn’t changed at all from when I got it, as far as I can tell. But the battery in this thing lasts forever, I have to charge it maybe once every 2 or 3 months, and that’s after using it to trim my beard 2-3 times a week. I have one of the sets that comes with like 5 different blade attachments and 10 or 15 different guards and it does great. I also use it for trimming body hair and it has 0 issues. The one caveat is that I wouldn’t really expect this to truly be a BIFL product…it’s mostly plastic and rubber and just generally cheaply made. However, I can’t name any other cheap electronic products that have lasted this long…so in terms of value it’s absolutely great.

  The pressure sensor is useful to avoid damaging the gum line. At least in my case, not every mouth is the same. I chose the budget Philips Sonicare model; in any case, all toothbrushes are sealed for waterproofing, so their lifespan is limited. My previous one, also a Philips, broke because water had entered through the button membrane, which was damaged. This one seems different, and now I press the button carefully to avoid damaging it. The brand was recommended to me by my dentist based on my specific needs.

They may not hold a charge for long, but the hold it long enough to still do their job after 17 years. A lithium battery would have completely failed or blown up by now, haha.

  Philips trimmers are 10/10. Bought my first one 11 years ago, only reason I replaced it was I dropped it a dozen times and one drop finally made it sound funky and run and shake violently. Towards the end of its I had to charge it once every 2-3 months but prior I charged it once to twice a year. It also got replaced because over the years I broke the different comb attachments traveling. I have a similar model to the one pictured i bought over a year ago and i charge it like 1-3 times a year. Great trimmer. Better blade than my original one since I don't need to use a turbo mode.

  Do smart home items really work in long term?

  Smart devices are great, but you have to be very deliberate about what you are getting. You can’t just buy a device and expect everything to just work. First, you want a device that works whether it is smart or not. There’s no point in having a smart bulb that shows up on the app if the bulb part does not work. A smart bulb without the bulb is just a useless smarty pants. Second, a smart device is essentially a computer. It runs software. That software can have bugs causing it to not work properly or worse have security bugs that allow malware to access other devices on your network. That means buying from a reputable company that updates the software proactively. Don’t buy a random no name Chinese brand from Amazon. Instead choose something reputable from Philips or TP Link or another reputable company. Third, the device needs reliable communication. This is the part that most people get wrong. How will your voice command reach the device? Most devices use WiFi. Most people also have cheap routers that cannot reliably reach all devices. They also have too less memory and cannot handle a ton of devices on the network. Smart devices will challenge such routers. You will need a better router and a plan to have proper WiFi all over your home. Or look into alternate protocols like Zigbee or Thread. The point is you need to plan this out properly. Finally, consider what happens if the company goes out of business. A popular device with an open communication protocol will probably get third party replacement apps. A device locked down to only the manufacturer is probably toast.

  My Philips rechargeable one has done me at least 10 years, while not BIFL, that’s pretty damn good. I don’t think the battery one will hold out enough, idk.

  Looking for a diffuse or filter to put on a 16 inch, width, light fixture to soften the light

  If you look for a "lampshade diffuser" they're circular pieces of plastic that are intended to be placed above a lampshade to diffuse the light coming from the top of the lamp. If you can find a 16" diffuser then I think that would work well, but they seem to be uncommon in that size. I would also try some different bulbs if you have access to them. Make sure you're using a frosted bulb, and different brands have different levels of frosting. The Philips bulbs I've used are more diffuse than my GE bulbs, for example

  I've had both Phillips and oral b from Costco and Phillips just feels better and last longer. I would recommend both. The only thing I would do research on is how expensive the toothbrush heads are. Also dentist and dental hygienist know the difference of you're using electric toothbrush or manual.

  Philips Sonicare are the best for cleaning in my opinion but they don’t last well. They often do a 2-year warranty offer so always buy with this and be prepared to complain to Philips when it breaks. Issues commonly relate to failing batteries (don’t hold charge) or mechanism becoming loose inside (not transferring power to the brush head). Under Uk consumer law electronic devices should last 6-years. And Philips customer services are pretty good. So, I’d still recommend but be prepared!

From what I’ve seen the oral-b pro 100 and philips one by sonicare are decent budget options but they don’t have the same power as higher end models.   100% can confirm just get the cheapest model. I got the 4100 for $30 2 years ago and picked one up for $35 a month ago for my wife. The one I had before that lasted about 9 years also the "cheap" sonicare toothbrush. On the flip side of this I got a water-pik (brand) water pick with the toothbrush and the toothbrush of it only lasted 1 year. Water pick itself still works great.

  Best Electric Toothbrush To Buy 2025?

  I just did a lot of research on this. [Electric Teeth website](https://www.electricteeth.com/best-electric-toothbrush/) has all sorts of fantastic reviews and comparisons on anything you want to know about electric toothbrushes. Summary: I just bought a Sonicare 4100 for myself and Oral B Smart 1500 for my wife. These are the top recommended models by electric teeth. Other info: I’ve had sonicare brushes for many years and like them. Sonicare is quieter than Oral B. Oral B several models are made in Germany. Oral B IO series are quieter than the non IO series. Oral B brush heads are susceptible to developing mold because the holes in the head whereas sonicare doesn’t have any issues with that. However even after rinsing the head after each time, the IO series are especially susceptible to developing mold growth in the heads. Non IO series don’t have as much of an issue with mold but still slightly more possibility than sonicare which is close to zero chance because of no holes in head. SURI have a seemingly major design flaw in that there are exposed charging contacts on the base of brush that can corrode when wet and ruin the charging ability. Several reports of this. On a bathroom counter top there is going to be water on it frequently. Those are my thoughts.

  My mini hifi system Philips FW630. I was 12 when I got it from my parents in 1998. Nothing fancy, but it has been with me since my early teens, moved with me seven times, played every style of music that has ever existed tirelessly for thousands of hours, provided sound for countless great house parties, and I've enjoyed hundreds of movies thanks to it. I still use it almost daily, it has never let me down, it doesn't look like it's going to change any of that in the near future and I'm grateful for that.

  Philips space cube 50 - M734 microwave. When I got my own place, one of the things my mother gave me was her old microwave (she bought a new one). She originally bought it either just before or after I was born, so it's about 36 years old now. (It's so old that it is literally *just* a microwave. No oven functionality whatsoever.) The plastic exterior is yellowed, part of the exterior on the top is slightly malformed due to age, but it still works just fine and I use it regularly.

  Water Flossers (WaterPik)

  I have had the counter top version waterpik, cordless waterpik, and cordless Philips. The Philips has a quad stream tip I love and the “straw” in the water container moves around allowing all the water to be easily used. I found this particularly challenging on the cordless waterpik. Side note I’m a dental hygienist.

  I wouldn’t trust anything with a digital display or touch controls, which rules out 95% of air fryers on the market. My Philips Viva, purchased as a refurbished unit 8 years ago, has been amazing. It has two simple dials for time and temperature. I use it multiple times per week. That said, it is slowly accumulating greasy buildup on the inside near the heating element and that will eventually be its downfall because there’s no simple way to disassemble it for cleaning. Thus, my recommendation would be the latest Philips Viva with analog controls, with the caveat that even that won’t last forever.

  I have the one with the dial on the back. It is super convenient to change the heights. I had previously had one that the guards clip on and the guards kept breaking It was super frustrating. The one I have now the charge lasts forever and it does a really good job. Have to change the blade maybe every 4 months.
