  Philips Hue bulbs can do it too. I have it set so that all of my bulbs (10 of them) light up over the course of 10 minutes in sunrise colors.

  Coffee. Mini coffee pot.  I love our wifi lights. We use Philips Hue and GE Cync lights. Extra lighting in areas you’re working besides ceiling lights. Corelle dishware  Houseplants. We need grow lights in our house.

  what’s the best most inexpensive sunrise alarm clock?

  Forget the crappy overpriced alarm clocks and get yourself a Bluetooth LED bulb. I use a Philips Hue Smart 60W A19 LED Bulb. With the Philips app you can program the bulb to gradually light your room - much like a sunrise clock. I’ve been using mine for three years. I can’t imagine trying to wake up without it.

  What smart home automations have actually made your life easier?

  Basic vice command stuff, but I use Phillips hue I have it turn on the lights in the morning to help wake up and a smart robot that cleans when I'm away. The robot vac helps a ton, my place connects dust and the bot does wonders

  Do smart home items really work in long term?

  I’ve had a house full of Homepods driving Philips Hue lights, sensors and smart plugs for 6 years, also homekit cameras and doorbell. None of the hardware has had a problem, nothing has broken at all. All the basic functions have been 100% reliable. I’ve sent all kinds of elaborate automations there has been some difficulty making my madcap plan work as expected but half of the time I had to learn something before I could get it to work as expected. Some more advanced functions have been a bit buggy. However, overall, it has been an extremely good experience. I have a lot of rooms where if it’s dark and I walk into the room the lights just come on. I’ve got a lot of scenes where I can do things like except the TV room up for watching, that one will set the lights correctly, turn the TV on, set the room temperature on a Dyson heater and load the app on the Apple TV for my media server. So I just say ‘siri sofa time’ I’m by the time I arrive in the room (often carrying my dinner), everything is ready to go. Another favourite is I’ve got a smart plug linked up to an electric blanket in my bed and it preheats the bed for me every night and turns on the projector in my bedroom and sets a few ambient lights on low when I enter the room at night so I can watch something before sleep (usually David Attenborough wildlife documentsries). It’s adding a lot of convenience and I doubt regret investing in it.

  Do smart home items really work in long term?

  Depends on your definition of BIFL. I've been using the same Philips Hue bridge for almost ten years and feel like I've gotten a reasonable lifetime's worth of usage out of it. I also have a fleet of various Google Home / Nest devices and all are still working, regardless of the generation or model. Same with my Nest / Dropcam cameras. That said, I bought a new washing machine a few years ago that has a mobile app for remote controlling it, which is completely useless to me and I've never installed it or connected the washer to my wifi. I'd also avoid any other connected appliance because, literally, no good can come from that.

  Do smart home items really work in long term?

  My long(ish)-lived smarthome stuff has included: * Philips Hue, for lighting * Google Home- The integration with other things has been pretty consistent, but you can get occasional issues if the vendor of your device changes something and doesn't tell Google. * TP-link Kasa- for smart plugs Sticking with big brands / established devices will get you further; avoid the fly-by-night brands. Expect them to cost a little more, because they need to pay developers to support the software.

  Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?

  LED bulbs seem to die much faster than the d incandescent bulbs. The HUE brand is best and those do last a long time, but they’re also super expensive compared to their regular LED counterparts.
