I recommend a brand called Porter. They are a japanese brand, make their stuff in Japan, and their stuff last basically forever. They are on the premium side of things. If not, anything from Thule.

What are some items under $500 you’ve made so far that changed your life?
A Porter brand wallet from Yoshida Kaban in Japan. I spent around $100 every year or so having to buy a new wallet/passcase until I spent 300-400 on a Porter wallet and passcase, and I’ve had them now for 8-9 years.

Iron Heart has a used section on their website (and you can also buy used goods on their forum), but I don't see any messenger bags. I'm currently using a Porter bag, bought from [Monocle.com](http://Monocle.com) and it's been bullet proof. Cordura is your friend, I think.
