  Looking for a couch that is actually worth the money- why does it feel impossible?

  We looked at West Elm and Pottery Barn, both owned by the same company and with stores close to each other in my city. Between the two of them, we probably sat on 20 couches. The West Elm stuff felt cheaper and less comfortable. We ended up going with Pottery Barn and loooove our couches.

  Please help! Which couch (store)

  We took a similar journey this year when looking for a second couch. We visited and sat on couches from all the retail stores you named and many local to Seattle stores. We were also a little gun shy due to a nightmare scenario buying our first couch from Interior Define just before they went out of business / sold the company while our couch was in process. Finally got that one, but never really felt the quality was great. This time, we ended up going with Pottery Barn (the York specifically) due to its overall build quality. I read somewhere that it was made in NC, but they hide the real build facts pretty well. All in all it has been a really great quality couch that feels like something that will last. It’s a great size for two adults and a greyhound, the material we chose deals with pet hair and cleans easily. We also liked that it came with extra lumbar pillows, kinda felt like we were getting something extra that really adds to the comfort. It can be pricey (we added depth and custom material) but you can often find sales throughout the year. Good luck in your search!

  I have four kids and need to buy a new sofa.

  Id only purchase a slipcovered sofa. We have a pottery barn sofa and ikea chairs. Love that I can wash the covers anytime.

  Would love your help picking a leather couch - all the ones I check out have bad reviews on r/buyitforlife or r/furniture!

  I have the poly&bark Canale sofa. We needed a space filled and it’s gorgeous. But wouldn’t call it a sofa I would want to kick back on and watch a movie with some blankets.  It does the job perfectly for the area it’s more of a sit down and talk sofa (tea sofa) not sure if that translates well. The next one I get I want one that will go in the same room as the Canale but feel like I could lay back and watch the lord of the rugs trilogy on it back to back without moving it’s so comfortable. The search is still on and can be a section it needs to be large and comfortable I am not as picky as the wife I could just as easy go out and get a pottery barn very comfortable sofa but my wife wants leather only which makes it a harder search. Pottery barn had one call called I think the Turner couch and you can tell it’s built well with good leather but it’s not going to cut it for relaxing. I know they are sofas that cost 6k-9k or more that would fit the bill but I really can’t do that as we are putting in a new kitchen as well so it has to be reasonable. I have another leather sofa in a different room from havertys I got literally 10 years ago on clearance 1/2 off not easy to find but it still looks as good as when we got it. So I will take my chances on not breaking the bank for a good sofa we have only one child she’s 8 and no pets and do our best to take care of our furniture applying furniture leather care to keep them up.

  Are all couches just garbage?

  I bought a large Pottery Barn sectional in 2017 and it still looks new. We have 4 kids, upgraded to the washable microfiber. I think it was $2800 at the time and it was 100% worth it.

  Desperate for a couch that doesn't suck

  I also have a pottery barn sofa with a single seat cushion. I've had it for probably 10 years and it's still like new. It's held up wonderfully.

  What’s one gift you’d recommend for a 1–4-year-old that isn’t just a toy.. something hands-on, keeps them focused, and helps them explore creativity while learning?

  Play silks - good for dress up & fort building. A useful gift is a small kid sized chair like Potterybarn everywhere chair. My kids have used for 8-10 years.

  Desperate for a couch that doesn't suck

  I got a pottery barn couch on a huge sale and it’s held up so well, over 5 years old and looks new with the wear and tear of kids and pets. Our ikea ektorp has also held up for 8 years, but we needed a new cover because the fabric is not as high quality.

  Desperate for a couch that doesn't suck

  My Pottery Barn "Turner" leather sofa is about to turn 10 and looks and feels amazing. I financed it at the time to make those zero-interest payments for 12 straight months but it has been so worth it to get a decade (SO FAR--anticipating at least 10 more years) out of a sofa instead of 3-4 years before a cheaper model would wear out. Not sure how heavy OP is ("heavier side") so I'm not sure how much that could impact their mileage.

  I'm very happy with my Pottery Barn sofa - I have the deep york slope arm, slipcovered, with a single seat cushion. I've had it almost a year and it feels great, very solid. The only problem is it is huge which makes it hard to get in/out of places

  Article sofas are solid for the price but not bulletproof. Crate & Barrel holds up better long term if you go with performance fabric. Other good options: Joybird, Interior Define, or even Pottery Barn if budget allows.

  A good blanket for everything!

  We got one as a wedding gift (17 years ago) and with daily use it’s still good as new. It’s from Pottery Barn. Not sure which one it is, as we didn’t register for it and it was such a long time ago. But it’s short faux fur on one side and sort of fleecy on the other side. The fleece side has not gotten pilly, and the fur doesn’t get gross. Washes and dries perfectly. It’s heavier though and not huge, that’s the thing- it’s more like a throw. It covers most of my side of our Queen bed (I use it year round).

  Does Pottery Barn make a fold out couch? We have a 20 year old hand me down pottery barn couch, ottoman, and chair and a half. You can still buy different color couch covers from them. They are amazing.

  Us it "Worth It" to Purchase a "Nice" Bath Towel?

  My husband bought us Pottery Barn ‘Classic Organic Towel Bundle’ for Christmas a few years ago. They are the softest towels I’ve ever had. I’ve wash them multiple times and they are still as soft as when we first got them. They’re spendy, but 100% worth it. Super easy to wash and stuff too. Just dry them on low heat, wash warm.

  Furniture is not made like it used to be

  Even the Pottery Barn cushions are garbage. I remember my aunt had a Pottery Barn sofa from the late 90s and it was SO COMFORTABLE and I always wanted one. They’re not the same. I genuinely don’t know where to buy furniture anymore.

  What BIFL items would you add to your wedding registry?

  We’ve been married 17 years. The things we registered for, received, and STILL USE are few. But: All Clad stainless cookware. A good quality cake server (sounds sort of dumb until you host Thanksgiving or Christmas and don’t have anything to serve pie with). A good set of everyday utensils/silverware (hold them in-store, so you can get an idea of the weight and how they feel in your hand). Wusthof or Global knives- depending on your cooking habits, we find the only 4 we use are the chef’s knife, bread knife, utility, and paring. Le Creuset dutch oven. And oddly, an ugly brown heavy blanket from Pottery Barn (that we didn’t register for) has really stood the test of time and is hands down, our go-to cozy winter couch blanket.

  High Quality Twin XL Sheets (and duvet)

  Summer blanket recommendations?

  I have a basket weave blanket from pottery barn that’s quite nice for summer. Sometimes paired with a muslin blanket that thankfully hasn’t started falling apart yet. We either use that or a summer weight silk filled duvet inside a linen duvet cover.

  What’s one thing you bought once and it’s still going strong years later?

  I got 20 years out of a Pottery Barn couch and coffee table, 21 years out of an ‘06 Honda CR-V, decades out of clothing (shoutout to my shearling coat from Florence) and pots/pans. Honestly, so much of it is just taking the time for proper maintenance. Take care of things in the manner our Depression-era family members did!

  LLBean percale was my pick for years, but my last set was different from my previous ones, and prompted my switch to Pottery Barn. It is totally possible, though, that my experience was an outlier, or that they’ve made another change since (May last LLBean set was from 6-8 years ago).

  I’d suggest cast iron pans and a couple good cookie sheets like Nordic ware. A few good kitchen knives. Then stainless steel pots and pans for the things you don’t want to do in cast iron. We’ve had a good experience with our all clad. A good can opener like the one by Oxo is not too expensive but will last for decades and does make life easier. A good pair of scissors. After that, personally, I’d want comfortable bedding. Sheets aren’t “buy it for life,” but high-quality sheets are definitely “buy-it-for-longer.” I like the organic cotton percale at Pottery Barn, but others on this sub like even more expensive options. Then a high quality, washable warm layer of some sort. I sleep hot and like a cotton-linen blanket because it breathes. But if you want something warmer, a quality down duvet with an allergy cover and a duvet cover over top can be kept in excellent condition for decades. And many people on this sub would suggest wool or wool blends. Since you’ll be starting fresh with bedding I’d invest in quality allergy covers for your pillows and mattress. I use two layers of covers - a waterproof one as a base layer and then a tightly woven one over that. Then mattress pad and then sheet. Mattresses aren’t ever BIFL, but that way you’ll be able to maximize its life span and minimize any allergens. As for appliances, I’m one of those people who loves my top-loading Speed Queens. They’re highly repairable tanks. I am really sorry this has happened to you, and I hope that you are able to make a new home for yourselves soon that will be comfortable and a place for you to recover from all this loss and upheaval.   Agree with others, take them couch shopping. But that being said, We ordered a couch from pottery barn. Incredible quality, great style, super cozy. Even with our dog it’s held up super well almost 7 years later now, survived 3 moves, one cross country

  Oversized chaise longue

  First of all we’re talking about online furniture retailers that service the entire country.. can you name a company that fits that box that doesn’t make some things in China? No. Second, Pottery barn makes a lot of furniture in Hickory. Smaller things are made in China/ Asia, yes, but so are Blu dot items. Hickory NC is the furniture manufacturing capital of the world. Any furniture coming out of that area is made by a working class that is highly experienced in that trade.

  Wayfair makes cool looking furniture but it is def not bifl. Pottery barn is high quality that you can buy online, but furniture is usually more of a local endeavor. I would try hitting up local upscale furniture stores. That way you can evaluate quality

  Bed stuff I'm thinking of buying

  I hated my weighted blanket! It felt great falling asleep but I woke up feeling like 20lb was being pressed down upon mg body. bamboo sheets - hell no. Get linen. I used a set for 5 years from Pottery Barn (got a fair price) but upgraded to a larger bed and have wanted to get another linen set… but for the $$$ I haven’t made the purchase because it’s so expensive and I haven’t found a brand I feel is worth the trust for the cost ratio.

  Advice: buying furniture (daybed) online

  a decade ago i used a formula where the couch price divided by $100 = the years it will last. a $300 couch will last you three years before the cushions start wearing, fabric seams might start busting and the joints start to wobble. these days, it’s more like $300/yr. also, moving the couch will quickly shorten its lifespan, so take a year off for every time you move / disassemble it. you can beat this formula by buying higher quality furniture used. but options and styles will be a bit more limited. unless you plan to move / sell it in a couple years, i would highly recommend adding $500+ to your budget, just to get something that will last. it is wild what couches cost these days, but realize anything under $1000 new is junk. *do not buy from Wayfair,* as they are a step or two below even Ikea. Ikea makes some decent stuff. but it too will start to fall apart in a few years. look for used West Elm, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel and their modern line CB2. each of these used to make high quality furniture but have fallen from grace in the last decade. there is still good stuff to be found, but just make sure it’s built from solid wood (pine is ok, oak is better) and held together by traditional joinery / bolts, not some quick assembly / proprietary system.

  Advice: buying furniture (daybed) online

  If you’re willing to spend a little bit beyond the budget your parents have given you, I can say that the Pottery Barn ones do hold up. They also have at least one slipcovered upholstered option which adds to the longevity because they can be washed or even replaced if need be. We bought one for a guest bedroom on a friend’s recommendation, at least ten years ago now, that guest bedroom later turned into my child’s nursery and my husband and I spent a lot of nights sleeping on it when they were young. It is now their actual bed and we just bought a second of the same daybed for the guest bedroom in our newly finished basement.
