  Looking for a hatchback car that’s not an SUV. We have a rav4 and looking to replace my ‘10 corolla. We have 2 large dogs.

  Really surprised I had to scroll so far to find a Prius rec. I've moved a few dining room tables with my Prius. Moved someone's whole college dorm. Moved an 8' granite slab with a kitchen sink in it, a couple 8 or 9' 4x4s, many loads full of crap to the dump. 45 mpg everywhere in an old gen 2, comfortable and spacious. Seats go down easily to reveal a giant flatbed. Mines only at 180k, minimal maintenance. An old one can be had for cheap as piss, newer ones I'm sure carry the torch well. I was also looking at the ioniq, but now have my 4th kid coming so we went sienna. Can second the van route, the 2021 and newer siennas look decent enough, have infinite room inside, getting 36 or more mpg with the hybrid engine. Plenty of creature comforts in the base model.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  Honestly, if you're in the US, it's not complicated. Buy a Honda Civic/Accord or a Toyota Corolla. A Prius if you want electric. I don't know why anyone buys anything else.

  Which is better for BIFL - electric or gas-powered transportation?

  What's really amazing is how many people think replacing the battery is expensive and complicated. But in reality it isn't. That 4000 dollar battery pack replacement is, in reality, a 20 dollar battery cell replacement. The fix takes about 4 hours to perform with basic hand tools and a multi meter. This is how I got my Prius for 200 bucks ( with a bad battery) and fixed it for 30 bucks and some time. Several thousand in gas savings later it still makes me laugh and what a scam the battery situation is.

  That is complete disinformation. We have a 13 year old Lexus hybrid that is still getting the same 45 mpg as when new. Prius’s are known to be bulletproof.

  BIFLers, what things do you not understand why people spend their money on?

  Buying a brand new car is literally the WORST financial decision. Get yourself something with 50-100k miles that is a fraction of the cost and has had all the kinds worked out. Shit. Buy a used Prius with 200k and drive it a couple hundred thousand more for funzies.

  In an age of things designed to be replaced, what currently-produced 1) trucks, and 2) cars come closest to BIFL?

  Yeah the Prius 2nd gen and 3rd gen can be had for peanuts and are extremely reliable. They are the best bang for the buck when you factor initial cost, and operating costs.

  What did you buy not realizing you bought it for life?

  My first Prius had the Corolla body, 2001. I bought it in 2010 and traded it in for a 2017 Prius in 2022. It was over 300K miles and just needed a belt replaced. My husband is 6’7” and wanted something bigger. We knew we had to have another Prius. When it turns 20 or so we’ll trade it in for another Prius if they still make them.
