  Probably going to get downvoted for this given how much this sub loves Darn Tough, but I own both categories to the Q you’re asking and from a pure financial perspective, letting my failure be your lesson, the better financial decision is neither of these. To illustrate: Costco sells puma socks for $11.99 for 10 pairs. The first time I bought a pack of these they’ve lasted over 3 years with daily wear. At $1.19 a pair, they’re still an order of magnitude cheaper than Darn Tough when they are on sale. No, they’re not wool nor exactly the same thing but Costco puma socks are pretty darn comfy. For example sake, let’s assume you can get a pair of ankle height Darn Tough for $12 a pair, hence 10 pairs is $120. Let’s suppose you have a “socks” investment account, park that $120 into an S&P500 fund and withdraw 4% a year for near-as-make-no-difference in perpetuity. You could afford to buy a new pack of Costco puma socks every two-and-half years. Similar dillyo with expensive sun glasses but kind of worse on the practical scale.

  Combat boot suggestions

  I have a pair of Puma Tornado side zip work boots that have lasted for a few years of walking in a factory and yardwork with no issues. They're very easy to just slide your foot into, but they don't look like Doc Martens.

  Store brand refrigerated pickles over claussen (not deli tho), any brand noodle over Barilla (Barilla is crap), produce from a produce market vs any bagged product (dole as an example), Kirkland undies, puma socks, and replica jerseys are more comfortable than authentic for most sports.

  its not complicated. go to Marshalls or TJ Maxx, $5-$7 for Reeboks or Puma boxer-briefs. Costco has similar type, maybe Puma i think. current set i bought like 7 years ago and still look / feel new.

  Darn tough w/ cushion. It seems like it would make them sweatier but for whatever reason these are about the only socks I can wear comfortably all day. -a sweaty foot gal Honorable mention the puma ankle socks that Costco sells...don't know why!

  Honestly I like the Puma 6 pack socks. I don't want to wear the same pair of socks for life... Given that, these still last me several years before needing to be replaced. I like the way the cotton absorbs sweat. I have merino wools socks as well, and I save them for the winter or hiking. I don't love the way wool feels in Summer or with excess sweat. Daily wear, I'm going with my Pumas.

  BIFL Summer underwear that doesnt cling to your sack

  The best quality-for-price underwear I've ever had has been Puma's "Active" line, despite them being 100% polyester. They've simply refused to wear down either through wearing or washing. I think my oldest pair is something like 9 years old? They're fairly snug fitting (haven't either shrunken or stretched out!), but they stay where you put them and don't ride or slide anywhere. Also the polyester fabric just doesn't retain moisture - they come out nearly dry straight from the washing machine, and similarly make any sweat simply go elsewhere when worn. The waist elastic is fairly tall though, so they're not ideal if you're sitting down at a desk a lot.

  13 years in the car biz, and fully endorse the idea that you have to take care of your feet! Under Armour. Little pricey, the Pumas mentioned below are good too, but I'll lose the UA socks to the dryer goblins before the comfort goes. I habe not thrown one away yet. The Pumas didn't seem to hold comfort and padding as long, been a bit though (12 year UA convert). And the UA fit my wide Fred Flintstone feet like a glove that is also a silky cloud. NOT a fan of the shoes though, they go fast. Probably due more to heated asphalt all day.

  Got 3 pairs of Darn Tough socks for hiking. Best socks ever. Comes w lifetime warranty. Not sure if I am going to send them after 8 years of use. If they last 3 years it’s money well spent. I also use the Puma socks from costco. I have hardly had a tear in them but around a year of use and they lose their elasticity but for $1 a pair, a year of everyday use is worth it.

  I was just about to say this. I got the puma ones from Costco too, and so far they seem great. No pilling, no thinning on my heel or big toe (I have oddly shaped, slightly upturned big toes and usually the top of the sock right above my big toe wears out quickly) and elastic is holding up even after years of tossing them in the dryer. Also agree that socks aren’t a BIFL product. More like “if they last more than 5 years you’ve got good socks.” Even back in the day, you could only darn socks so often, eventually due to rubbing/friction inside of shoes, the fabric will just wear out.

  I’ve had great luck with the Puma ankle socks from Costco. I don’t think socks are ever BIFL, but I’ve had a pack for 6 years with no holes and still going strong. I’m sure they will now develop holes tomorrow since I wrote this.

  +1 for Puma. Every single year growing up, my mom used to get my sister and I a pack of puma socks for our Christmas stockings. They'd last years, and I'd lose most of them before they got holes. My parents have been gone awhile now, but my sister and I still carry on the tradition of puma socks in our stockings! Bombas isn't all bad in my experience. Try the cushioned ones. Unless they've changed the manufacturing, I got a 6 pack of their golf socks about 5 years ago, and they're still in great shape.

  Trail running shoes like Adidas Terrex, you can find older models new for around 50-60 euro I think, try to look online on their official site first also try the other big brands like Nike, Puma and New Balance, Decathlon isn't bad.

  Are Adidas Sambas still worth it?

  The price on the Sambas is nuts. I was trying to get one on a sale many many years ago and then I was able to get a $35 sale on white Puma Super Ligas. They are basically twins of the Sambas just without the iconic three stripes.

  Going to Europe, suggestions for comfortable, not-ugly walking shoes that will last?

  It's ok to have sports sneakers like Hoka, Nike, etc if you're going to walk a lot. Want to be more European? Go Adidas, Puma or On. But if the "average" American tourist wants to go unnoticed in Europe then better also change clothes to European style (buy them there though). To be honest you're going to end up in touristic areas anyway so you'll be noticed anyway. And in those touristic areas just don't give to beggars, don't sign any paper in the street, beware roms, scammers, watch your pockets, etc. Touristic areas are not like the real life areas. And that's also valid for local tourists.
