I’m a side and stomach sleeper, and I have a tendency to slip off pillows in the night and wake up with my neck shaped like a triangle, even with those funky shaped cervical pillows. The only pillow I’ve had any luck staying on at night has been the original Purple Pillow, but it’s a bit too firm for me. My parents just got me the Purple DreamLayer pillow for Christmas, which is shaped like the OG but is a lot softer, so I’ll check back in a few days and let you know.

Hi! I am passionate about pillows for side sleepers. Our guest room pillow graveyard is . . . very well stocked. Lots of people suggesting the Purple Harmony here - that’s the right track! I had the Harmony but it wasn’t high enough for me. Finally landed on the Purple DreamLayer. It has three sections so you can adjust the loft a smidge. I have only one section in and have been anticipating putting in the second section if it collapses over time, but I’ve had it about a year and haven’t needed to. I recommend! I’ve tried them all. I have a running list. the shredded foam kind was not sturdy enough for me. It still flattens out. And for me futzing with filling was annoying. Buckwheat is just not squishy comfortable enough or high enough. It’s quite hard. And noisy. I do keep mine on the bed to prop up my other arm when I’m half on my stomach/half on my side. The PillowCube worked for a while but it eventually did compress a bit. It also just looked funny on the bed and in a pillowcase, but that’s just me. I’m a 5’9” tall person for reference.

I have the original Purple one. It’s a rectangle. Best for side sleeping. It has a couple inserts so you can subtly adjust the height to be perfect for you. Haven’t had a kink in my neck since getting that pillow3 years ago.

I have the Purple Harmony king size pillow and it is awesome. My wife has the Purple Harmony standard size. We've had them for about 4 years, no complaints. If you only side sleep I would recommend one of their pillows that have the inserts you can use to make it taller or shorter. They have gone up in price a good bit, but so has everything else too. The pattern you get on your face while taking a nap is hilarious.

By “heavy” I meant primarily a side sleeper. I took a sleep test (polysomnogram) to help diagnose a sleep disorder. One of the insights from the test was how much time I spent sleeping on in different positions: for me it was mostly the right side (61%), followed by prone (stomach), and supine (back). I went with the med height version of their pillow. I don’t believe the heights have a different firmness level. I have the travel version of the harmony pillow and I think it’s similar in firmness to the king size I purchased. But for your concerns you may want to test both heights out to see if one makes a difference. You can always use the other as a knee pillow.

I don't think they even sell it anymore but I have two and they're the only pillows I use. I have tried almost every pillow on this list, and hands down BIFL is Purple Harmony pillow. I’m a side sleeper and sleep hot. Before Purple I was flipping over my pillow multiple times a night, refluffing (especially Coop),and waking up with pain. Not with the Purple Harmony. It is a game changer. I sleep cool because of its honey comb design that constantly dissipates heat. No memory foam BS with “cooling gel” that will eventually saturate and be warm at 2 am. It also NEVER goes flat. It’s been over a year and I’ve seen no difference in height. My neck feels good when I wake up! The final kicker… my SO is a side/stomach sleeper that runs hot. He’s also a cheap male lol. After we tried them randomly in a store while my mom was mattress shopping, he was so impressed he bought the Purple Harmony low profile version while I got the normal loft version. He loves it! Get Purple Harmony (normal loft height unless you’re larger sized). I buy them for my loved ones and recommend them to everyone.

This. I’ve tried all the shredded latex pillows. While they’re great at first, if you move at all, you’ll be reshaping them or flipping them all night. I’m on my second purple harmony pillow (I like the low loft) and it’s the best I’ve found. I had to replace the first one after 3ish years as the grid did break down a bit. But I love it.

Latex is essentially king, in terms of support and longevity. Memory foam (the proper density and quality) is probably next in line. Mattress underground breaks this all down for you. You can get a latex hybrid which can be a good middle ground.

I have the Helix midnight and I'm a bigger dude, I guess(220lbs) I wanted to return it during the 100 night trial because it was so hot. My partner seems to like it. However, I basically sleep in a valley every night, I feel myself roll into it. I had the original purple for 7-8 years, when they refused to give me a warranty because it didn't sag "enough" I went with Helix, because I was being Petty Betty...and I hate it. I spent so much money though, so I'm stuck with Helix. I personally would not recommend Helix. If I had $10,000, I'd go get another purple because it was awesome, and that was the basic, purple grid only, not any of the new stuff.

GF has had a Helix Midnight and it has held up well for a couple of years. I prefer my Purple mattress as it’s not as firm or as warm as the Helix (not to say the Helix is hot, it’s just noticeably warmer than the Purple in my experience). Haven’t noticed wear issues with either Purple or Helix and I think they both have a generous return/refund policy if I recall correctly.

Mattress recommendations
I can say the Purple Warranty was excellent. My mattress was sagging after 7 years, which is their recommended life span. I hit up customer service who asked to see how much, I threw a level on there and apparently they though it should have held up more. They shipped me a new one. The Matress frame I got form them has failed, but I am on my 2nd mattress and very happy with them.

Purple is worth it! And at least back when I bought mine, super quick delivery if OP is in the US. I don’t think any mattress is literally BIFL but I will say that around 7 years later— and having been moved many times— my Purple mattress feels identical to how it did when I bought it. Also, everyone’s needs are different of course, but I have really bad long term back pain due to medical reasons, but also can ironically only sleep on my back, and this has been by far the best mattress I’ve ever slept on comfort wise.

Oh yeah I started working for them as they were handling that lawsuit for IP and if I remember correctly they had won since they were the ones to come up with/design the purple polymer they use to make the beds and a couple other companies tried to remake it /use it and claim they were the original creators. There was also a lawsuit that they had with a guy who posted a review with fake claims - basically claiming that a white powder that was on the mattress when he opened it, was extremely toxic and was concerned for his health. But Purple also won and put a restraining order on him for the review and other content he made about it since the powder is completely non toxic and it’s for when making the material non sticky.

We had one for 7 years that developed really deep “divots” where we each sleep. Based on my back pain, they probably developed 2-3 years before we asked for a replacement. Purple replaced it under warranty and we’ve had the new one for two years now but it’s having the same issues, even though we went for a higher quality this time. We won’t do Purple again. I do like the purple pillow though!

Personally I hate all 100% memory foam mattresses, so ordering online was a no. I tried purple, nectar, and more at friends houses and wanted to die on each of them. I ended up buying a hybrid mattress (one of few remaining fully spring mattresses + layers of foam) from a local seller who’s been making mattresses for decades. It wasn’t more expensive than mail mattress options and it is simply incredible. Every night I go to sleep and every day I wake up like, “this mattress rules beyond reason!” Any time a friend or date crashes in my bed with me, they’re like “you have the comfiest bed ever.” Spring mattresses for life!!!

Get a jelly cushion, they don't go flat. If you want high quality, go for a purple, like the mattress. I've found mine much more comfortable than any foam cushion I've ever tried.

I am happy with my Purple, although I did need to put a thin mattress pad on top so I didn't feel the grid pattern. If you want extreme durability, you might be better off with an all latex mattress, mostly because while the hyperviscoelastic polymer (the purple stuff) will never wear out, the springs eventually will.

Purple Harmony Pillow in tall. Best pillow in existence. I used to buy new pillows all the time but they would go flat so fast. This is worth every penny. In fact, my husband bought a second one for himself because he wanted the tall version, and he initially bought the regular one. I highly recommend them to anyone who wants a great pillow. We have had them for years now,and they haven’t gone flat. Any time I can take it in a trip (namely road trips), I will. I even had it at the hospital when I gave birth recently. They make a travel version now, and I soooo want it for future air travel so I can have one in even more trips. This pillow is incredible. Definitely life-changing.

well, no mattress will last the rest of your life unfortunately. sleep numbers are close.due to being all component based, so you can swap out individual pieces instead of replacing the whole thing. the warranty is for 25 years with the first two years completely free for any replacement. the trick is to warranty a new top with he padding for free, then save it till you need it. i used to have one and as a side sleeper they were great. out of your list tho, id go for purple or casper

I bought a few Casper years back and still have them around. I also tried the Purple pillows, my wife actually likes them, but it feels a bit too bouncy for me personally. I still keep it in our bedroom though. Saw this cloud-shaped pillow from Mellow Sleep on TikTok recently and figured I’d try it. Not really into the shape and I'm more of a regular pillow person but it’s surprisingly comfy.

I got a helix twilight luxe. my back is messed up from rugby/ having horrible desk chairs and couches. The discs in my back and neck kept trying to escape their assigned seating. Best decision ive made in a LONG time. this plus a purple hybrid pillow. i sleep great and don't wake up in pain anymore.

From what I’ve seen, back pain usually improves with medium-firm hybrids. I’ve tested Tempur and Saatva with clients and Saatva tends to win when it comes to support and pressure relief. Purple is great too if you want a more flexible surface. Did you notice any difference in your sleep posture?

Great choice going with Purple—they’re known for great support and pressure relief, especially for side and combo sleepers. Purple mattresses cool really well, to the point that I have to use a fur blanket on my top of my comforter to stay warm. My fiance sleeps hot and it's perfect for him. Cannot recommend it enough. We have the Hybrid Premier 3 and love it.

I can’t say if this is truly BIFL, but I honestly think the best pillow is the Harmony by Purple. Their pillows are heavy, but they seriously don’t deflate. I’ve had many other pillow brands (including Saatva, Tempurpedic, some other famous company I can’t remember the name of right now) and they’ve all eventually deflated. The purple pillow I got my husband as a gift is 8 years old and still good as the day we bought it. I know because I got another one for my husband recently (our son kept stealing the pillow), and they feel the exact same. They also come in different heights, which is awesome for different preferences. I’m a back sleeper, so I do the low height. My husband is a side sleeper so we did the medium for him. The high is probably for side sleepers on a firmer mattress.

For me, the Purple pillow solved my neck pain issues when sleeping at night. It does come in a couple different thicknesses as well. Very breathable for me and if you flip it after sitting your head down until you get slightly tired the opposite side it's like a chill box!

A Purple seat cushion! It massively upgraded my chair when I couldn't afford a new office chair in grad school and has been with me for 8 years now. I actually prefer how it feels over my Steelcase chair and it's great for long car rides too. I love to recommend it as a gift to students who spend a lot of time studying and are stuck with dorm furniture.

Super mega expensive but my purple mattress hasn’t dropped at all even though it’s over 3 years old. It feels very different given the material used in it. Others have described as feeling like a water bed if you’re curious.

I've only had my Purple mattress for 4 years, but I can say there are no indentations, even where i often sit on the side of the bed, which is a different material than the purple grid and is most prone to wear from what I have read. I fully expect it to last 8-10 years at least at this point. If heat is a problem for you, I'd really encourage you to up your budget and consider Purple. I also can't tolerate the heat from memory foam (and honestly can't understand how any human being can), but Purple has been great for me, sleeps neutral to slightly cool, not cold. I'm a side sleeper, 6'3 230 pounds, no issues with lack of support or anything like that. Honestly, if Purple announced tomorrow that they were going out of business, I'd run out to buy another one for when this one does eventually wear out.

All the major brands have 5-10 year warranties which cover against developing depressions. We bought Purple mattresses with a 10 year warranty, and bought the extended insurance against virtually any other damage. Your next problem is *under $1000*. Good luck.

Pillow for side sleepers
I have a bead pillow or something to that manner. It's an old one, but I like it because when sleeping on my side, I can put my hands around it to shape it how I want if that makes sense. Easy to raise or lower as needed from my head. Feels cool, and you can kinda adjust the firmness based on how tight you form your hands around it. Hope some of that made sense. Not sure if it is beads. It's an old pillow that was handmade by one of my older aunties. It feels like beads or something if I press into the pillow. Do note though, while I also use normal pillows such as the purple twincloud (it's okay, side sleeping isn't too bad, and you can adjust up to 4 firmness levels, but it's a bit too high for me sometimes), I'm also a fan of just kinda layering blankets to sleep on.
