  How do synthetic base layers compare to merino wool base layers?

  Yeah but I use about 10ish in rotation, standard kids expeditions are 4 days plus 3 days training with only a day between. Cross country expeditions 6 day paddling plus 2 days set up. I’ve had a pile of different brands and materials and the drawer is filled by all the tough kit as the weaker stuff dies and the Marino stuff falls down by far the quickest and for the highest cost. Rohan, Quechua, Helly hensen and Lowe alpine are the 10+ year stars. Patagonia and Paramo sit somewhere between - hanging in there but not holding up to the rigours of constant use. They’re newer items bought when the new breed of pro scheme discounts came out but not going to make it to 5 years. I love the feel of Marino but it has no place in a BiFl groups - except perhaps darn tough - I’ve just worn through my first pair so we’ll see if the guarantee is worth the extra cost.

  decathlon bags are good. their quechua bags are backed by a 10 year warranty and are way cheaper than other options

  Which moment made you switch to the "buy it for life" mindset?

  A wardrobe full of somewhat deteriorated/damaged clothes, tiny holes in seams or on visible panels, socks with worn out heels and toe holes, always annoying, but never enough to just trash it. I made an inventory on stuff I bought in the past that still remained in good state, so far I opt for Uniqlo Airsm short sleeve oversized t-shirts, they feel more synthetic than organic stuff, but after three years look as good as new besides the neck imprint being washed out (plus they dry over night when traveling). Socks were a surprise find, the Quechua Sock Hike 100 High from Decathlon have lasted as well multiple years on me now. I have one pair of airism boxers with a buttoned front, don't ask me about the exact classification, not skin tight, but very thin and smooth in material. Uniqlo doesn't stock them in this style anymore, and I'm open for alternatives. Pants are usually Levis 501, I can easily buy them blind as I know the model size that fits well, but they usually wear out around the center seam between the leg pieces after two years. I still have other clothes of course, but by putting more rotations on the proven items, I can reduce overall wear on what I need only occasionally.

  Is a second hand Patagonia jacket worth it?

  If torrentshells are still too pricey, look at Marmot Precip, Columbia Outdry, or even Decathlon’s Quechua line. Not as "lifetime" as Patagonia but decent budget-friendly rain gear

  gear isn't BIFL, unless you never use it. the best you can hope for is reasonable repair costs and good warranties. good european brands: tents: vango, quechua, hilleberg (most expensive but very high quality) pack: deuter, berghaus cooking: your current canister stove is great. wood is really hassle for frequent backpacking. given that you're in the UK, what if all you can find are rain-soaked twigs? trangia stoves are popular but alcohol is more fussy.
