Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
RM Williams boots. So many folks get shirty when you say they’re not worth the current $720AUD price tag, but they are genuinely, honestly not. I hear of folks who have 20+ year old pairs and have put them through hell and back without a worry, but a modern pair goes to pot with even basic use in a matter of months. Genuinely believe that when they went the VC route, they lost their BIFL status in the transaction, and now they’re just coasting on the backs of their former rep and hoping that because 99% of their customer base is now other VCs and city slickers who couldn’t tell a cow’s rump from its head and catch a cab the 100m to get lunch, nobody will notice just how bad their product has become.

Prolonging the life of shoe soles
There are dozens of different Vibram sole designs, no doubt also different variations of rubber. Trail running shoes tend to offer less ruggedness equating to fast wearing out. In the Merrell category, I've great experience of the Lowa Renegade (hiking shoes) in the past with rubber like car tyres. If you'd prefer boots that can be resoled then R. M. Williams Comfort Craftsman, proven work boots with a surprisingly long lasting rubber sole. If you live anywhere near Adelaide then its a bonus or just take them to a RM Williams stockist for resole.

Tired of shoes lasting 6-12 months. What to get?
In Australia almost every man seems to own a pair of RM Williams. They come with a hefty price tag, but supposedly very durable and very serviceable/repairable.

Tired of shoes lasting 6-12 months. What to get?
>Any shoe you buy that you wear year-round, for everything, is going to get destroyed that's not entirely correct. if it's a full grain leather and well built (e.g. good year welt) shoe, you can wear it everyday. speaking from personal experience. +1 if it's a tough leather. Look at RM Williams, Blundstone, Red Wing or Thorogood boots. If you're on a budget then Thursdayboots. all you need is to resole it every couple of years and give the leather a bit of care, and you're good to go. unless you're working on site as a tradie.

While not for life, 8 years of daily wear is pretty good for boots
Saddle treatment or similar, not shoe polish, on this rustic type leather. I use RM Williams' saddle dressing that's tallow-based, Blundstone sells a specific cream for it that won't darken them as much as tallow or mink oil based ones will.

RM Williams pants, well over 15 years old.
I've got Pilbara Collection moleskins and they are the only pants I wear, I'm a short 80% of the year kinda guy but moleskins are super comfortable. They're designed for outback cowboys which can tell you about the breathability.

Sneakers or boots for daily wear.
If budget isn’t too much of a biggie, invest in a pair or two of RM Williams Comfort Craftsman. Rotating shoes is the key. I do miles of walking in them and am always on my feet, but still like to look smart. They’ve been a game changer for me. The leather is durable, the boots can take a beating yet still look good. They have a very comfortable insole and they can be resoled and rebuilt. I’ve just had my oldest pair resoled and they look like new. They’ve been through all sorts of weather and conditions, I’m not precious over them, but wanted something that would last and act as my ‘car’ (I don’t drive). Genuinely wouldn’t be without them now.

Ladies, what are the MOST comfortable boots you’ve worn for walking 10k+ steps a day?
My wife swears by her RM Williams specifically their Halle Chelsea boot. But their other offerings are all top tier.

Black non slip work shoes for walking all day
I have a pair of RM Williams Comfort Craftsman that are now 12 years old having been worn on alternative days for around 70% of that time period. They have been resolved one and re-heeled around four times. They are still going strong. I would be firmly in the "spend money on decent shoes" camp.
