Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?
Rainbow sandals - just hit 20 years with my first and only pair. Daily use every summer

What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?
We've got two Meile canister style vacs from the early 90s. They'll probably last forever. Grew up with a Rainbow from the late 70s. My parents got it as a wedding gift and it lasted til I was at least 22. Hell, it still worked but my girlfriend and I go it her a modern bag less vacuum for Christmas just because they're simpler to use. Point being, there are a handful of great brands of vacuum cleaners that can suit our individual needs.

Finally stopped buying cheap vacuums and invested in a better one, does it actually last?
Problem is any vacuum that uses a filter system will lose its ability to work quickly. The way to mitigate this is to use a larger filter, or let more fine dust bypass the filter. Vacuums with multiple filters like 3+ do this better than those with just 2. (I dont know of any vacuum that only has 1 filter right now) I currently use a Rainbow Vacuum, it uses a HEPA filter and a water basin, this thing is 25 years old and hasnt lost any suction yet. But their vacuum heads aren't great. So I bought an old Hoover that was broken, and rewired the Rainbow to match the hoover input, stripped it to just the head, and now that's what I use.

Finally stopped buying cheap vacuums and invested in a better one, does it actually last?
We have a ~30 year old rainbow and it still runs like a champ. It's more setup/teardown to use than a cheap upright, but it works so much better. In that time we've gone through probably a half dozen cheep vacs we used for small task/spot cleaning.

Should Birkenstock soles look this bad after 1 year of occasional use?
Are you on the heavier side? Did you get your Birkenstocks from someplace like Costco or TJ Max? Those two things make a big difference. I had a pair of Birkenstocks I bought from Costco and they wore out in about 3 years. My dad is probably 100lbs overweight and he wears out his sandals, especially on the outer sides of the heel area, quite quickly. Unless you wear them several times a week for long walks, and they’re well fitting, and you aren’t shuffling over gravel … yes, that looks like too much wear. I have a pair of Rainbow sandals that I got in 2009 and their soles look like this now.

I know they’re controversial in this sub, but this Rainbow SE vacuum is a beast that won’t stop. Was my parents, they bought it in the mid 90’s and recently passed it on to me and my wife. We use it multiple times a week and it’s still great nearly 30 years on
My grandparents have one, it was expensive back in the daym but it is build as a tank. The only thing that had broken is a power cord and it has a small crack on the hose near handle. Nowadays they're build much worse.

My favorite vacuum cleaner was a fixer upper and now it will outlive me. Hoover Constellation Model 86.
I sold Rainbow Vacuums to friends and family 20 years ago, they are still going strong! The old line of vacuums really outdid themselves.

I literally live in my flip-flops; what brand is genuinely odor-proof, even after being put through the paces (so to speak)?
I've left my Reefs in direct sunlight, didn't wear every day, etc, and they just still stunk - and I'm not a smelly foot, or smelly guy in general. Granted, they were the all-rubber model, but all Reefs I've had stunk. Reef Rot is real. I'm hear Rainbow is good for the funk

Chacos Worthless Warranty
Stay away from Chacos! I bought mine on Amazon and a year later the sole came apart. Here is the email exchange with Chaco. Apparently whenever they change styles, they no longer warranty the old style. I just got very (un)lucky with the particular style I chose. (Chaco email 1) Hi Daniel, Thank you for reaching out to us concerning your Chaco footwear. We appreciate your time and diligence required to file a claim. In order to be approved for a replacement pair of Chacos, our assessment team considers when the shoes were purchased and the nature of the defect. Our assessment indicates that your product is not eligible for replacement as its an older style and is out of our warranty period. We are sorry that we cannot proceed with replacing your footwear and appreciate your understanding. Alea Chaco Consumer Relations Representative (My email 1) Alea, The website says the warranty is good for "The entire life of the product." When did the warranty change to only include purchases within a specified period of time? These sandals are just a yearold. Are you suggesting when they fall apart due to defect, that is the effective end of the life of the product and the warranty no longer applies? Thanks for clarifying. (Chaco email 2) Hello , Thank you for your email. The lifetime of a flip is considered to be 1 year anything beyond that is considered wear and tear as they have surpassed the life expectancy of our flip styles. I apologize for this inconvenience. If you have any other questions please reach out and we would be happy to assist. Thank you, Caitlyn Chaco Consumer Relations Representative (My email 2) Thanks for your response. Will you be updating the verbage on your warranty page to replace "lifetime" with "1 year"? I purchased these flips from Amazon 1 year ago expecting they could be repaired or replaced if they fell apart suddenly. Your apparent stance on environmentally friendly and repairable products was the entire draw towards them. Very disappointed. My replacement pair will be from rainbow and I will no longer cater to your business. Have a good day. (Chaco email 3) Hello Daniel, Thank you for reaching out! We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. The lifetime as mentioned in our warranty is referring to the lifetime of the footwear, not the wearer's lifetime. Since we sell many footwear styles with varying lifetime expectations, we are unable to update the warranty to reflect just one style's lifetime expectation. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Have a great day, Tyler Chaco Consumer Relations Representative

Looking for durable mens shoes
Depending on what kind of sandals you're looking for I would say rainbow sandals or chacos. I own both for different reasons. My rainbows are probably 6 years old and still have life in them, I wear sandals most evenings and weekends for 3 seasons. The chacos are probably 3 years old but my wife has a pair that is 8 or 9 years old now and still have tread on them.

My birthday is coming up. What brand of Sandals should I ask for?
My inlaw's are a HUGE rainbow family. I honestly thought they were all a little silly for being so hard-core about a freaking sandal. After 10 years, I bought my first pair 2 months ago... I wear them as often as sandals are appropriate. They're worth the hype!

Rainbow Sandals are now made in China
Check out their website as it is up to date. Like I said, don’t rock them anymore so not sure whether or not they might have switched over all of the standards to China. They used to manufacture some in Cali and some in China where the only way of knowing is to have them in hand. [[Rainbow Made in USA](https://www.rainbowsandals.com/signature-series)

Searching for a Great Pair of Flip Flops - Reefs?
Flip flops are my shoe-type of choice. Reefs are decent. I have owned a pair of Scott Hawaii flip flops since 2020. They were about $35 and are still my go-to shoe when I am forced to wear them. Haven't looked to see how much they cost now. Olukai are pretty good too. Rainbow also last well.

Are there comfortable house sandals in this style that I don't have to replace every six months?
Rainbow offers cross straps that are very comfortable, but they're leather so they have a lifespan. Their rubber options are extremely comfortable and last forever, but they're traditional sandals. I'm wearing the East Capes right now. They're stupidly comfortable and very durable
