  The Best Kids' Clothes Right Now?

  If you have Once Upon a Child go there and look for second hand Primary, Hanna Anderson,  Boden, and vintage Gymboree etc... take your time feeling the fabrics. I recently got a Gymboree shirt for my oldest that I'm confident will make it through all (soon to be 3) of my boys because it's so thick and well stitched. Look for shirts that feel sturdy. Some old Gap and Old Navy will be good too. I've also bought kids Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama second hand and those are durable too.

  How’s Ralph Lauren holding up?

  RL is Great and if you wash a sweater in the washing machine then idc what brand you buy it's all a waste. People complain about garments but forget the washing and the caring is what makes the brand and ralph lauren is on par to perfect. Even there lower end basic sweaters and things of that nature should be hand washed. If so you will see it will last for a very long time. The higher end it is it will last forever. Also if something falls off you can go to realph lauren with the receipt and have it altered or fixed for free actually I just learned that two Christmases ago. If it is some special one of a kind patch or something like that your going to want to try to preserve it bc they might not have it so it depends on the item. I find the womens clothes to be very nice aswell. I will say this though I don't like the outlet stores I think there's something up with that plus you can get great sales around this holiday time and after christmas that you would be suprised on there actual site what you save and can get things those stores will never have. I only mess with the Double RL the WorkWear RL and The purple lable. Aswell as the regular Polo RL stuff none of the RLX or Golf lines I'm not big on puffy big coats and golfing so that would be why.

  It’s hard to find quality construction these days. I have started shipping exclusively at the thrift store. I look for all-natural fibers and good construction, which you used to find on mid-market brands whereas now even high-end brands cut corners. Lots of timeless styles out there, or you can have a tailor adjust the silhouette. If thrift hunting is daunting then look on eBay. Pendleton, Ralph Lauren (not the green label Lauren though), Brooks Brothers. Vintage only: Benetton, Ann Klein, Missoni, Liz Claiborne. Vintage cashmere was higher ply and is more durable.

  I’ve had my Ralph Lauren towel for the last 20 years. I’ve tried 5+ other brands and none of them are as absorbent or long-lasting, so I always go back to it. Wife just got me a replacement for Christmas, so we’ll see if it’s the same quality!

  The best sheets I have were ruined

  It's not the thread count that matters - it's thread quality. That's why high threadcount sheets can feel like sandpaper. Most of my favorite sheets are now vintage moderate thread count, but super high quality thread (old ralph lauren). The have lived forever to the point I look for old new stock on ebay tbh.

  honestly don't get too caught up in brand names - what matters is the construction and materials. look for overlocked seams (you'll see two lines of stitching), and stick with thicker cottons, flannels, or linen. those will outlast the trendy expensive brands. also super important - figure out what type she wants. warm and cozy flannel? silky smooth? that'll narrow things down a lot. and here's something to keep in mind - if she wants fuzzy pjs, they can be a pain with flannel sheets, so maybe throw in some silky sheets if that's the case. ralph lauren and lands end are solid mid-ground options that won't destroy your budget but will acc last. the fancy brands like eberjey are nice but tbh you can find the same quality for less if you know what to look for in the construction. here are [a few options](https://deo9gr5ha90bn.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO1529) to check out that might help narrow things down

  Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Brunello Cucinelli, Loro Piana, Turnbull & Asser. LP has some issues in my opinion more recently with the blends, some are nice and unavoidable like outerwear others I question. Occasionally when traveling I’ve found some niche local brand producing clothing I’ve bought but it’s quite a bit of effort.

  If you started your wardrobe over from scratch, what would you buy? (US)

  I actually did this. After college most of my wardrobe was informal, sweats and loungewear. Aside from one extremely poor fitting suit I used for a final presentation freshman year. Luckily I found the absolute best strategy, I got a sales job at Ralph Lauren. I quickly found out why so many people apply for the role. I got 50% off across the board year round, I only ever purchased things with this discount a few times. The realllll discounts followed each quarterly season. Any remaining inventory goes on sale for the general public. As an employee we got 60% off the after sale price! But it gets even better, twice a year we had an employee luxury sale, and once a year an employee home goods sale. This was 85% off all on sale items in these categories!! Many things which were already 30% off. In my 8 months at the company I bought 4, purple label suits and a tuxedo, 5 blazers, probably a dozen sweaters, a least a dozen suit pants, like 8 pairs of RRL denim, jackets, coats, flannels, endless accessories, I remember buying RRL tshirts in bulk marked from $85 each to $8. Everything that needed to be was tailored for free as well. I even got a few duvets, throw pillows, blankets and more. Of course very very strict rules apply and this is only for our own wardrobe. We could get fired for buying things with these discounts for other people. But i mean… 😉 All in all I probably spent 5 or 6 thousand dollars during my time at the company on clothes. Most of which with the 85% after sale discount. My wardrobe must be worth 40-50k at this point. When I decided to leave I made sure to buy a couple pieces on my way out, many of which still have the tags on them. All that and my new job is virtual so im back to sweat pants most days but I digress, If I needed a wardrobe, I’d get a job in retail!

  Wool, cotton, silk, cashmere, alpaca. Natural fibers constructed well. I would focus only on classic brands I love that hold up forever: Pendleton, LL Bean, Orvis, Duluth, Barbour, Levis, Ralph Lauren, Max Mara, St. John, Lafayette 148, some Brooks Brothers, vintage Armani. I would thrift more. I would buy more classic basics. Wish I would have known about fabrics and good construction in my 20s.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  100% agree on the fluffiness and lack of absorption in most towels, BUT, I implore you to try the Ralph Lauren bath sheet towel. They are huge and fluffy and absorbent. They aren’t cheap by any means, but once I found these, I never looked back.

  Wool Overcoat Suggestions

  You should NOT buy buying one for your wife. That's a recipe for disaster as they are particular creatures when it comes to fashion. Get her a gift card to XXX store and let her do her thing. You should be looking on eBay. Any wool overcoat is basically BIFL as the use case for them is near zero wear. Used will save you a ton of money. Mine is a lovely Ralph Lauren 100% wool that I got for like $40. You buy them based on your suit size, so know that in advance, so if you are a 42L suit, you should buy a 42L coat.

  Yup, I stopped with cheap shit years ago. Only cheap stuff I have are free merch shirts I get for working in. Everything else is typically high quality wool content and from a maker thats been at it forever. Ive found ralph lauren shirts from the 90s and early 2000s in thrift shops for a few bucks and they'll likely be in my closet for another 20+ years

  for some brands eBay can be an amazing way to get good deals… I’m kind of into Ralph Lauren Purple Label on eBay… with some patience, 2500 dollar sport coats, new, I’ve found for $300-$600… still expensive… but I got one Ralph Lauren (non purple label) in very good condition, for 30 bucks. It’s my favorite coat lol. some brands are hard to find good deals on… Arc’teryx maintains its value… although you can still get them at 50%-60% new price, if you’re patient, sometimes. Anyway, eBay is great for good clothes for cheap. I know it feels weird, but you get over it :)

  Patagonia, Marmot, Orvis, LLBean (admittedly hit or miss), Barbour, Eileen Fisher (for women), check Irish import stores. Look at thrift stores for older Brooks Brothers, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, even Gap.

  Hi friend, unfortunately this is the wrong sub for this question. You should go to r/handbags and ask. There are tons of lesser known brands that are absolutely stunning. None of them have been mentioned here lol. I recommend the Ralph Lauren polo id bag. The resale value and construction are very solid. What are her hobbies? What’s her favorite color? Does she wear gold or silver jewelry (this matters for the hardware color of the bag)?

  Cashmere Wrap Recommendations

  I have a Johnstons of Elgin cashmere scarf that’s 9 years old that I love. It’s nice and big, soft and has a great pattern. William Lockie, Begg and Colhays are other solid options. Don’t buy Quince or the other DTC Instagram garbage brands. If it’s under $300-400, it’s probably not very good cashmere.  If that’s your budget, a vintage cashmere scarf from the brands I mentioned or Pringle will be far better. Or find something at Ralph Lauren on sale.

  I’m looking for a sweater that will last me a long time & is very comfortable - an investment (:

  This has been my fixation for the past couple of years. Recs for women/anyone looking for a slightly more feminine look below. I also have a bias towards natural fibers which is a little irrational. Buying new: - Expensive but good quality and on trend: babaa wool sweaters. Oversized chunky knits from Spain, more fashion forward in the sense that their sleeves trend towards bat wing. They have sales throughout the year at regular times, always 25% off. Mid 300 euro range. Softens as you wear it. I bought one last year and wore it several times a week, it’s among my favorite purchases ever. - Aran knit sweater- classic Irish wool sweaters. Unfortunately I find that a lot of these have trended towards merino blends (which is not what I want in a durable chunky sweater, give me some heavy regular wool!). But it’s always well priced and excellent quality. - LL Bean’s cotton sweaters are a favorite Buying vintage: - expensive option: you can find vintage Loro Piana in the 300-400$ range on eBay, among the highest quality cashmere available! Definitely not indescrructible but timeless and will last a lifetime with care. - Pendleton wool sweaters are dirt cheap on resale, always at my Goodwill and shopgoodwill.com, and high quality. I do find them scratchier than my other wool sweaters. - Ralph Lauren and Pringle of Scotland are brands I’ve had luck with in the vintage category

  Best winter jackets?

  Apparently Uniqlo's down jackets are really good. My husband literally only wears that and he's used it through both Chicago and Boston winters. It's lightweight, so easy to travel with and folds down into a bag so, it's very convenient. It looks really nice too. And for the extremely cold days, just layer the down jacket with a wool sweater. Marmot has great jackets as well but they're really bulky. I have a Ralph Lauren one from Macy's that looks nice and pretty good for harsh winters but it's so bulky. Honestly if you can wait till after winter around February/March, Macy's has sale on their heavy winter jackets and you will get great deals on some expensive ones.

  I really like cotton button down shirts from Ralph Lauren, and you can usually find great deals for them on Ebay. I have some vintage ones that are so incredibly thick, they will last forever. I assume the mens are the same. They look great for casual days at work or weekends.

And I seek out items that are not obnoxious with logos or branding like has become so popular. If that fits your style.

  The purple label stuffs are still good, but pricey. For men there are decent alternatives at lower price points (Spier & Mackay, Suitsupply for sub-$1k, Ring Jacket, Anthology, Carrara above $1k) but I'm not too familiar with the choices for women. I suppose some of those brands making men's tailoring do offer made to measure to fit women, but the garments will still be based on men's patterns so I don't know how flattering that would look.

  If you're going for BIFL, skip the mall-tier Ralph Lauren and check secondhand Ralph Lauren from the early 2000s or 90s. That stuff was built to last. Look for it on Poshmark, eBay, or ThredUp. The quality difference is immediately noticeable

  I have lots of men’s Ralph Lauren button downs and polos. They last several years, never pill, and are good quality natural fabric. You do have to look though. They’ve snuck some polyester into some of the clothing, but the cotton ones last really well for me.

  purple label is still good (not great), RRL is good, standard RL depends on the piece, the outlet type pieces are not made to the same standard as some of their staples, hit or miss. avoid the cheaper diffusion lines altogether

  2ndhand ralph lauren has been holding up pretty well for me, u can tell how the clothes hold up coz its 2ndhand too The zippers are rusted but hopefully thats an easy fix with jewellery cloth for rust There are diff types of ralph lauren clothes? I mostly buy men stuff and i do have an idea of which fabric from which line i prefer. Also yea good idea to browse before buying to get an idea of the fair price range

  I've had a similar experience with their women's clothes. Some of the cheaper stuff looked nice at first, but it didn't take long for little things to start falling apart, seams coming undone, buttons falling off, etc. I do have a nice houndstooth blazer from their higher end line. I got it second hand at a consignment shop, but it still wasn't cheap. It seems like a BIFL piece though, with the proper care.

  For realz. Finding a good fitting, long lasting t shirt is impossible it seems like. Best shirt I ever owned was a Ralph Lauren cotton/wool blend T. Great fit, not too casual, not too formal, so great for any outfit occasion and good, long lasting materials. Wish I had bought ten bc they stopped making them after one season. Maybe since it was so good there were no repeat customers bc they didn’t need to buy another??

  Try to look for vintage pieces very specific to the colors you want, in 100% natural fibers like silk, cotton, and wool. I have an orange Banana Republic zip up that I got secondhand that has to be 20 years old that is indestructible and still vibrant as new. Most clothes made before 2008 will have sturdier construction and better quality materials. I have two 100% silk tops from the 80s that are also vibrant as ever. Older items also won’t have buttons and strings hanging off and open seams if you know how to spot the well made ones, too. Find things online or irl thrift that are over 20 years old but in good brands like Land’s End, J Crew, Ralph Lauren, even Gucci, Dior, Armani but old enough to be priced well now. My closet is 60% thrift and BIFL and that Venn Diagram is a circle! The slightly older items last so much better I’ve found.

  Us it "Worth It" to Purchase a "Nice" Bath Towel?

  Very worth it to buy a good towel. Not only for texture and performance, but for durability and size too. 100% cotton. Synthetics don't absorb water, so synthetic towels are really only suited to use as a floor mat, like a beach towel, where you just want something to lay on. Drying towels need to be absorbent like cotton. Otherwise you can scrub and scrub and they just push the water around. I got a gigantic Ralph Lauren towel that has been amazing for like a decade now.

  One of the best gifts my husband has given me was two robes: a velvet one for winter and a silk one for summer! The velvet one is from Ralph Lauren and is SUPER good quality. It’s dark green, and makes me feel like a literal QUEEN! The silk one is from a brand I’ve never heard of and can’t recall at the moment, slightly less high quality but I love it in the summer. I definitely recommend getting 2!

  Boy is this spot on. I used to have Brooks Brothers stuff last years, now I'm lucky if they make it a year. Allen Edmonds is sadly the same now, used to be extremely good quality, the new stuff is not even close, the nice part with older Allen Edmonds is you can get them resoled and they will last, but buying new ones is off the table for me now, sadly. I will say the Ralph Lauren and Club Monaco stuff, while not quite as nice as they used to be, are still fairly decent in terms of quality/longevity from what I've seen with the past few things I have bought from them recently.

  Beyond frustrated trying to buy percale sheets

  Hi you reached out to me asking about RL vintage sheets. There are 2 things I look for. It has to say either made in USA or ITALY. Most are now made somewhere else. Look up photos of the “country collection” vintage RL 1990s and make a list of the pattern names and screenshot the designs. Then search on ebay or etsy for those patterns using new old vintage RL etc. They are not cheap but they last with no toxic sludge. Respond here if you need more information.

  I buy the Laura Ashley or Ralph Lauren percale sheets from tj Maxx and I personally adore them, about $60 for king. I have 3-4 sets in rotation, I get about 5 years out of each set. To be honest, my husband works outside and is pretty tough on our sheets.

  BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.

  The obvious clothes, but especially ski gear. I've found personally on sites like vinted, I can get loads of clothes for work that are second hand. Because the majority of the vinted audience is young people looking for trendy clothes like lacoste, ralph lauren, and they want T shirts, jeans and jackets, I almost hit an untapped market I got a pair of RLX (ralph lauren golf) chinos for 10 quid, I wear them to work and golf, and they're my favourite trousers. I got a spyder half zip (about 150-200 new) for 40 quid, and all of these clothes you could pick up in a store and be happy with, no signs of aging at all. Trendy fashion is hard to get but for smart gear, or ski gear, people don't know what they're missing and the massive oversaturation isnt there, so you can pick up some nice ski and smart gear on sites like vinted.

  What did you buy not realizing you bought it for life?

  Beautiful Ralph Lauren sweater from 2001 when my daughter was a newborn.  She took it from my closet a few years ago proclaiming it was hers now:-). Also Ralph Lauren shorts and sleeveless polo shirts which lasted for years until they became too tight.

  Bed stuff I'm thinking of buying

  I HATED my weighted blanket!! It made me feel like throwing it off of me, but where do you put it? It was huge, hard to fold up and store. Absolute garbage. Spend your money on nice sheets, I buy Ralph Lauren and they last me forever. Bamboo might be nice and cooling, idk. If your bed is a queen or larger don’t bother buying sheets under $50; they will be crap. They will tear quickly. I know bc my husband has tried many times to buy cheap sheets. You get what you pay for. Also, TikTok influencers suck.
