What’s the best sunglass brand to bifl? I’m not even sure if there’s any with a very durable design
Im from MA originally and I’ve been on the Randolph train for 6-7 years. Sent my first pair (Concords) in for a tuneup after bending them bad and losing a lens a couple years ago. My third pair (P3s) is about due to go in for a refresh, and I’m eyeing a fourth pair for prescription sunners. Love that they have some good non-polarized options and repairability. Don’t love that they’ve done the Portnoy partnership, but I get it. America hoo rah is a powerful buying demo and he has the MA connection.

Agreed! Randolph’s are really the best independent brand and they have no interest in selling. They actually were the original military “aviator” style. They were the ones who made military pilot sunglasses (non-polarized).

Randolph will replace a broken pair even if you sat on them. Speaking from experience.

I chose Randolph since they were the only metal and glass combo with styles I liked

+1 For Randolph. The glass lenses are heavier than I was used to, but they’re great. I’ve even dropped them a few times straight onto concrete with no real damage to frame or lens.

I went with Randolph and if they're in your price range I highly recommend them. It was a big spend for me but the quality of construction is seriously good.

What’s the best sunglass brand to bifl? I’m not even sure if there’s any with a very durable design
I own two Randolph sunglasses (aviators; 23k gold and gunmetal) and they are amazing. I characterize them as sturdy rather than heavy, insofar as they don't slide down my face. And that's coming from someone with a low nose bridge and oily face. The nose pads are larger than what I am used to (RayBans), but I don't notice them after a day. The "standard" bayonet temples that come with most of their frames are also larger than average, so you will feel discomfort if and only if the frames are too small for your face. There's a smaller margin of error in that regard, compared to sunglasses with skull temples where it still "works" if otherwise small on your face. If the standard bayonet temples, try out Randolph sunglasses with the slim bayonet or skull temples.

American Optics & Randolph are both non-luxottica brands to explore.

sunglasses recommendations?
I have used Randolph sunglasses for almost 10 years. I sent them in for a refresh ($25) and they replaced the screws, nose guards and gave them an overall tuneup. The frames have a lifetime warranty. I’ve bought an additional pair of prescription sunglasses for my other car. The sunglasses nor the company have disappointed me.

Any suggestions for high-quality polarized sunglasses that don’t have a huge markup just because of the brand?
Randolf these are the best sunglasses I’ve ever owned. Military grade and look amazing

Buy it for life sunglasses?
To add to this, their frames are known as tank frames. Known for being robust. Randolph themselves market their glasses as built for a lifetime, not a season. I bought a pair of their Concordes for 50% off during Thanksgiving. By far, it is the best pair of glasses I've ever owned. Incredibly comfortable and solid.

Buy it for life sunglasses?
Do you remember is the lenses were glass or polycarbonate? My Randolph’s are glass and have been incredibly durable. Though I can’t remember any drops, I guess like you said if you get “the one” bad drop that’ll just about ruin a glass lense. Maui Jim’s polycarb lenses should be able to take that drop a little better I’d imagine.

Sunglasses that allow me to actually see but don’t break the bank…
I was about to get one of these because I thought the price was superb and there were lots of positive reviews. I do have my eyes on Randolph’s now

Sunglasses - Polarised with glass/scratch resistant lenses?
I love my Randolph’s. They are built like a tank and feel as BIFL as any sunglasses can be. If prescription sunglasses weren’t so damn expensive, I’d have bought more

What are some BIFL brands that are manufactured cradle to grave in the USA?
I believe Randolph sunglasses are all made in MA. I used to do morning rides near their manufacturing facilities. Great sunglasses. Iconic aviators.
