Chippewa no longer really makes any heritage stuff and has had a drop in quality. No idea who makes LL bean but they still say Goodyear welted but for 200 probably not great. Other brands worth looking at Red Wing (300+, unless you wait for Seconds) Wolverine (notch below, do not pay more than 200-250 for 1000 miles) Thursday (200 and probably close or maybe a bit better than that Bean) Urban Wolf Club (170, better than thursday but long wait times) After than you satrt getting into Grant Stone, AE, etc and north of 500 bucks

Good list. I agree with a lot here. I’ll note that the new Levi’s always wear in the crotch for me. I’ve since switched to Patagonia pants. I’ve heard the USA Levi’s and vintage ones still hold up great though but their elastic or blend jeans aren’t as durable. Patagonia is great. Sent in my down puffer to fix a hole in it. They patched it up and refilled the down. Only downside was the wait, but I did it in the summer after the cold. Patagonia worn wear is great as well. Can get some good deals and the condition is always accurate/great. Boot-wise red wings heritage is awesome. Grant stone is also another company I greatly enjoy their boot quality. Le creuset Dutch ovens are absolute work horses. After getting one, it is my most used pot. Incredibly versatile. Also shoutout to the book all about braising by Molly Stevens. Made me a much better cook. All clad pans as well are tanks. Zojirushi rice cooker if you eat a lot of rice multiple times a week. For an office chair, Herman Miller. I found one on Facebook marketplace for cheap after Covid and it saved my back. I’ve had darn tough socks for almost eight years and I’m finally noticing wear/a hole forming on my oldest pair. So once those wear through I’ll finally use their warranty. Incredible value. Artisan cooking/chefs knives. I got a set from a smith and they hold up so well and look beautiful. Hold their edge much longer too. Only had them a few years but I cook quite a bit and I’m genuinely impressed by their build.

For me, it’s been Origin USA for my clothes & boots. Glock for pistols, kershaw (only the USA made ones) for pocket knife’s, wusthof for kitchen knife’s, Toyota for cars/trucks, saddleback leather for wallet/belt/briefcase/totes. Side note, Saddleback just started making boots but they are more than double the price of my tried & true OriginUSA boots. I still love my iron rangers from red wing as well so they’re a great buy.

I’ve had my docs for 3-4 years and had to replace the insoles once, but you really have to search for the good ones, like the Chelsea. But my Japanese made shoes are amazing, they’re made for walking, it might take some extra research but the Japanese red wings are where it’s at.

Up your budget, look into Red Wing boots. Depending on what you’re looking for, I’d also pick up some Bean Boots for the winter (fur lined). I’ve had my Red Wings for about 10 years now, bean boots for 6. For coats, it all depends on what you want/need and what climate. Are we talking a coat for 0F temps? Get an insulated jacket and a fleece sweater to layer. I’m going to be buying a nice one for myself likely next year, but right now I use an insulated Patagonia better sweater that I got off eBay for like $50, works great and super warm even down to those super low temps. Will replace with something nicer but I’m spending a lot of cash on winter running gear. So that’s a next season upgrade.

Mall brands are the problem, but buying new from heritage brands still hurts on price. Jim Green is a solid call for durability per dollar. Used Red Wings are fine if soles and leather are still healthy. I would rather buy a used high quality boot than a new mid quality one every time.

Well, if you wear a 10.5 D in Red Wing Heritage, I’ve got a pair of Iron Rangers I would sell you for $100. They somehow don’t fit me, and my replacement pair in the same size but different leather are my favorite boots I own. I definitely hear what you are saying, though. The good stuff is out there, but the price is premium these days. At this point, you have to save to get what you need, or just buy subpar options at a higher frequency.

The struggle is real. Brands like Docs and Blundstones are coasting on reputations they built decades ago while moving production to cheaper factories. For a $140 budget, your best bet is to stop looking at mall brands and check out Jim Green boots. They are ethically made in South Africa, fully stitch-down (so they can be resoled), and are widely considered the best 'bang for your buck' in the boot world right now. You might also have luck finding a pair of Red Wings on eBay or Poshmark in that price range if you don't mind them being lightly used

For boots, pay the difference and invest in a pair of Red Wings or something similar. I have both brands and my RW Iron Rangers are WAY nicer than my Thursday Captain boots that look similar. They were easier to break in and have held up really well through over the last few years. My Captains are much stiffer, the leather is thinner, and I think once they do break in, they won’t last nearly as long. (I bought them last year and haven’t worn them as much because my Red Wings are so much nicer that I end up reaching for them instead.)

Comfy boots I can buy in the UK
I'm a convert to Red Wing boots. Full grain, goodyear welt (meaning they can be resoled multiple times). Not cheap (around £300) but you can find many hardly worn on eBay as the sizing is a bit weird and people end up buying the wrong size. Check out the r/redwingshoes sub. There's a store in London but other online retailers too.

The Birkenstocks, I believe, are your only BIFL item here (I hear they are resoleable thus you’ll get good mileage from them). For sneakers, you’re pretty much screwed. I’ve done a bit of research on this front and there are only a few companies that make repairable sneakers, all of which charge way too much to make it worthwhile (unless you’re rich, which if you are: can I have some money?). For the boots, however, Blundstones are arguably your worst offenders here becuase you have options. I love the look of Blundstones and from what I hear they’re also really comfortable and durable—my wife has a pair that she has beaten to hell and they are still going strong 7 years in. In spite of their really good build, they are still not resoleable and thus are doomed to the landfill. Even the Blundstone website says that because of the way the sole is made to be comfortable and durable, the process makes them nearly impossible to replace. It’s basically the same story as with sneakers, except for the fact that you do have plenty of alternatives for boots that can last you a lifetime. Goodyear welted boots are easily resoled by any cobbler worth their salt, and there is no shortage of options. I myself have 4 pairs of boots*, all of which are Goodyear welted and have taken their respective beatings in stride. For something in a similar look and price range to Blundstone, I suggest looking at the boots sold on Huckberry (I own a pair of Rhodes Boone Lug chelseas that I love), or Thursday Boots (they have two chelseas that would stand in for the Blundstones really nicely: the Legend and the General Purpose, with the latter being really close to a Blundstone clone). Obviously you already own a pair of Blunnies, OP, so I say use them to their fullest and take good care of them, and they’ll still last you a good long while—not BIFL but pretty close. When the time comes, I recommend you look into GYW boots for their replacement. *For anyone curious, my goodyear welt collection includes the aforementioned Rhodes Boone Lug Chelseas from Huckberry. These are new and I am still breaking them in, but even with the necessary discomfort that comes during the breaking in period of new boots, they’re pretty great so far. I also have a pair of Thursday wingtip boots for a dressier option, which I’ve had for about 8 years, a pair of Red Wing Chukkas that I’ve had for 7 years, and a pair of Chippewa Boots from 2015 that are only now due for a resoling. Chippewa is the only brand I wouldn’t recommend because it appears they’ve gone in a different direction with their products in the last 10 years and the stuff I see on their site does not resemble my boots in quality or style.

Look into heritage workboots like RedWing etc. (Look at RoseAnvil on YT for more) On the more affordable style; Clarks, New Balance, Dr. Martens/Solovair Paraboots are highly rated but will cost you

Birkenstocks will last if you protect the leather (leather conditioner etc) and cork (Kelly’s cork renew or Barge rubber cement). Once the sole wears down 1/4”, get a heel tap or resole from a cobbler. Blundstones are not BIFL. If you want boots, look into boots that have a good year welt like Red Wings. These can be resoled by a cobbler.

Converse are buns because they're non resoleable and are the least comfortable shoe I've worn in my entire life. I'm not sure of any BIFL shoes but for boots look into Red Wing

You can change out the insoles on a lot of boots, I know Red Wing and Jim Green can do it. You might be able customize a better boot to not hurt your feet. Personally I've been getting great results wearing Tread Labs insoles in most of my shoes and boots.

If you’ve not gotten something yet, you could check out arc’teryx. Not really a buy it for life, but I’ve used them in Chicago, they are pretty good. If you want full on walking down the narrow footpath of an un-shoveled sidewalk go with something like a bates gortex g6, again not bifl, you can get 6 Chicago winters out of them. Since redwing got mentioned, I’ll say mine are 9 years old and I’ve resoled once. As far as a non winter office boot they’re solid.

I just commented something similar above because I hadn't seen your post. I love my Tecovas and don't understand why people think they're phony. I get that they advertise to a broader crowd than some of the heritage brands do, but does that impact the quality? From what I understand, they are still handmade with quality leather. I don't do manual labor in mine (Redwings for that) but can walk all day in them. I also love that I've got a store down the street that will polish them up and give me a beer anytime I walk in!

This is the way - once you go welted you never go back. Look into something like Red Wing Iron Rangers or Doc Martens for life if you want boots, or check out some proper English makers like Trickers or Churchs. Yeah the upfront cost stings but when you can resole them 3-4 times over their lifetime it's actually way cheaper than burning through cheap shoes every 6 months

The best would be John Lobb bespoke. When you learn the time and cost to get a pair, when you stop coughing up blood, you'll learn to not use the word best ever again. Your best bet is to visit a Red Wing Shoe store and get a fitting, then ask about their steel toe insulated offerings. Do not skip the fitting as you are not a 6.5. You are likely a different size but 100% you'll find that you are a 6.5C as you are missing 50% of your size.

My girlfriend has a bunch of pairs, and it’s been a mixed bag - some are totally decent/reasonably durable, but others seem much less so. To be honest while they look nice, I don’t personally really categorize them as high quality. I wonder if they used to be much better quality, as my girlfriend insists that in the past she had some really durable ones. To be honest I think you should look for older l shoe companies: i.e. Solovair if you want that Doc Martens or European look, or something like Danner or Hanwag if you want a more hiking style, or Red Wing for work boots. They also go on sales, so don’t balk at the initial price you see on their websites. If you want dress shoes there are a bunch of good suggestions on the subreddit - I have a pair from Glein in Vienna that I really like.

Be mindful of mobility too. If you currently or in the future could need to climb inside vehicles etc, you may want a style on the thinner or lighter side. Red Wing Thorogood and Danner usually get the most praise. I spent a while last year looking for something similar and settled on Keen. I was pretty happy with what I saw from Ariat too. When I worked in a plant where I walked the floor constantly, a few of us settled on a particular style of Rockport at the time as the most comfortable and longest lasting. I put two pairs through hell and still have them 15 years later. That’s not to say they make them like that anymore but don’t be afraid to branch out to different styles than a boot too. Personally for that, I’d look at Merrell, 5.11. Maybe try on some police or military style boots or shoes too. And if you haven’t already, Amazon try before you buy is a huge help.

My red wing super soles are more “boot” like in that they are more rigid but my thorogoods are like really well built protective sneakers in how they feel. I’d take a thorogood moc toe with heals if I was on concrete all day. LL Bean Bucksport as a budget Iron Ranger?
If I were going to choose between the Iron Rangers and Bucksports, I'd choose the Iron Rangers almost every time. That's even when considering the $150 premium for the Iron Rangers ($120 if you consider that I had to buy replacement insoles). The Iron Rangers feel way better and have speed hooks. The only downside is they are fairly loud when you walk on hard surfaces, so I'll likely with with softer soles when it's time.

Depends which ones you buy. That will determine what kind of tread you have. Iron Rangers up to about 6 or 7 years ago weren't great, but I liked them anyway. But now they're probably as good as you'll get in snow as they have decent tread on them. You'll slip as much as you might in sneakers. And as for going out in really cold for any length of time and/or in snow deeper than your ankles, of course you need properly insulated boots. You can buy some from Red Wing, but being in Canada we have lots of good choices in the stores that are properly built for cold winter. But I'll wear the Iron Rangers going from the house to car, or shopping, going to work, etc until ridiculously cold (make sure you treat them well with boot oil before winter). Mind you I'd wear sneakers doing that kind of activity down to -30C in Winnipeg when I was living there... shopping in malls or short walks on the main streets. If it was under 5 or 10 minutes and you were walking on cleared pavement or concrete. Any time you have snow above your soles, you wear proper winter boots.

Good boots. I like to wear boots instead of shoes. Not work boots, but say a good Red Wing. And I say Red Wing because they came from making work boots so they are sturdy, long lasting, and comfortable. I like their Iron Ranger because as I say, it was made originally as a working boot, and it retains that kind of durability (unlike high fashion brands that just want the look and charge double of Red Wings (already expensive) for it). I think of them now as high top casual shoes for every day use. And when you wear it for walking around and every day use, that work boot durability means they last a long time. My last pair lasted 7 years of nearly every day use until a shit shoe repair guy screwed them up royally when resoling them. My next pair is on 5 years now. And that is the last point, they can actually be repaired and resoled (which I have done every few years for less than the cost of a new pair). Unlike shite like Doc Martins etc. Shoes worth wearing are worth repairing. And that's how I buy all my shoes now, with the exception of running shoes, none of which are repairable.

The red wings may be repairable. Best to check that first. BIFL doesnt mean they dont require maintenance or repairs. Its that the repairs are possible. I went with RW because of this. Im always replacing boots because I wear put the sole, not the leather. So resplable was a requirement for my last pair.

Redwing #2416 boots: $350 8” steel toe/ shank work boots. I bought them one year and I put the little doe cap protector epoxy that hardens etc… they lasted almost 2 years before I had to replace them and it was due to the sole separating and not being able to find someone who repaired work boots. So I bought another pair… big mistake. I contact the seller because the sole started to have issues after 5 months and their line was that redwing had moved work boot production to china as they started to focus on their lifestyle brand… or something but by removing their quality and still charging almost $500 after tax for work boots (which isn’t insane to me as I spend at least 10hrs/ day in my work boots) that are just as bad as Walmarts $60 dollar boots.

I usually buy shoes size 11 or 10.5 if I think they’ll really fit my feet. The mules are 11. They slip a little out the back but it’s less and less the more I wear them and it’s a comfort slip not give you a blister slip. The Redwings are 9.5 and I doubt they will ever give me a comfortable foot home but I am giving them a second attempt to stretch out.

You cannot ask about comfort online ever. Too narrow isn't a thing, you buy shoes that fit your feet. If you need steel toe and BIFL, the easy button is to go to a Red Wing Shoe store locally. Get an in person fitting, don't go in there and say I'm a size 9 as you are likely not a size 9 and your real size comes with a width lettering so you will find out you are 10C vice just a 9. Then you can get 10C steel toe shoes/boots that are goodyear welt construction.

Your budget will not support what you want. The easy button is to go to a Red Wing Shoe store. Step zero is to get an Al Bundy style fitting with a Brannock Device to know your shoe size with length and width. I'll be you $10, the size you have in your brain right now is wrong. Then ask to view/try on waterproof, insulated boots with goodyear welt construction. Women's BIFL boots are hard to find. Add in waterproof and insulated and you are making this even harder. Open your eyes to trying on men's boots if your feet are large enough for smaller men's sizing as well as the entire boot market is catered to men. This info doesn't seem fair, but it is what it is.

Tennis shoes for standing/walking all day
I also like Hokas, as a runner I’ve haven’t found a shoe more supportive (I have plantar fasciitis). Good tennis shoes are unfortunately designed to be replaced after a certain mileage (like 600 miles) and still come at a hefty price tag. For a hiking shoe that will be supportive and also last a while a recommend Merell. If you want something quality that will be comfy and “durable” a price tag has to reflect that. I’m currently in the market for some red wing iron ranger boots at $350 but I know they will last a very long time and can be resoled.

Red Wing, specifically the “heritage” line is a great compromise between so so and full custom boot prices. As others have mentioned, the Iron Ranger is from the heritage line and is a fantastic boot. I will say that it is thin on the bottom just due to the type of construction, some folks love it myself included. If you want a more cushion step check out their wedge sole models.

Durable walking boot recommendations?
Iron Rangers came recommended to be by a friend and it just so happened that the local Red Wing dealer had an insane BOGOF, so I grabbed two pairs and alternate wearing them. Can confirm the break in was absolutely horrendous, but they are by far the best everyday boot I have ever worn. Other than some scuffs, they’re in great shape and I put a few kilometres a day on them at work for two years now.

I am a field engineer, so don't get the steel kicking that a lot of guys do, but I have had them in some caustic environments and they have held up great where others have not. hoka, red wing, dansko all get thrown around a lot but tbh it’s less about the brand and more about what the shoe is actually built like. look for good cushioning that doesn’t flatten out, a solid heel counter, a tiny bit of lift in the heel and slip resistant tread (non negotiable on restaurant floors). avoid anything that bends like a slipper if you can fold it in half your feet are gonna hate you by hour 6. also helps to rotate pairs so you’re not beating one down every single day. linking [a list](https://videoguidelines.com/shoes_s_standing) here that has some decent options

I usually get 5-8 years out of my redwings. Usually have them resoled 3-4 times in that timespan. They take a beating, I'm an air compressor technician so they get put through all kinds of industrial environments, heat, cold, salt, oil, solvents, metal grating, concrete floors, gravel roads etc. plus the driving (adds a surprising amount of wear to the soles and a lot of flex and wear on the leather. And being in them for 12-16+ hours at a time. I swear once they are broken in, they are more comfortable than a pair of slippers.

The 4585s have the closest silhouette to those that I can think of without being $600. It's unfortunate but any boot that is even decently made is gonna be north of $200 or more. I'd also maybe look at Jim Green Boots to see of they have some offerings. They tend to be very well made and not that pricey.

If you want a pair of boots that are built for life, it’s tough to look much further that the Pacific Northwest boot-makers. Nick’s, White’s, Frank’s, and JK all make some seriously tough boots that will last for decades with proper care. But they are also not cheap. So you get what you pay for. If PNW boots are too pricey for you, consider Red Wing or Jim Green. Both are well made. I think of Jim Green as PNW light. The leathers aren’t the same but still well made for a fair price, and many are double lasted. And a lot of first responders seem to like Redbacks if you’re okay with a slip on Chelsea style. I didn’t think I would ever like a Chelsea boot. But I now own 3 pairs because they’re just so comfortable. Waterproof can be a quirky thing. Most waterproof boots have a waterproof liner. Those make your feet sweat and stink. And once you get a hole in them, and you eventually will, all waterproofing is out the window. In fact it’s worse because any water that gets in at that point is trapped and makes a nice swamp in your boot. I would rather have a double lasted boot, leather outside and leather lined. And treated with a good waterproof conditioner like Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP or Huberd’s Shoe Grease.

Clothing and footwear brands that hold up over time
Boots: red wing, bobbies, Thursday. Anything resolable will last forever. Clothes: J Crew especially on sale,Patagonia, madewell, Huckberry has some good men’s stuff too although can be a little pricy. I would generally stick to natural fibers with the exception of technical pieces like a ski jacket or workout shirt Care: the most important piece to lasting as long as possible. Re-oil your boots as needed as they’ll be susceptible to faster wear if they dry out. For clothes, learn when and how to wash different garments. Clean freakz on tik tok is a great source for all things laundry but in short, don’t actually wash your clothes until they need it due to smell or stains. Natural fibers especially tend to be more odor resistant than things like polyester. If you’re just doing a standard wash for stinky clothes, cold wash is probably all you need save those hot washes for when you really need to get stuff out. Also get a front load washer if you can it’s much easier on your clothes then a top loader. Finally lower heat on your dryer if you can adjust that it’s easier on your clothes. Heat and friction are what really kill the longevity of your clothes

Prolonging the life of shoe soles
I wear Vibram 5 finger shoes, they are the best shoes I have ever worn. I’m in my 5th pair, and I am rough on shoes. If you want a true buy it for life, you need a premium leather shoe or boot that can be re-soled. Lots of Redwing boots are super comfortable. I am on my 5th soles and 3rd heel on my main pair of cowboy boots and my 3rd some and second heel on my second pair of cowboy boots.

I had Miyabi, Henckels, all kinds of fancy pants $500 knives. This $26 knife beats the shit out of them. It’s also super thick, so you can abuse it pry bones then go finely chop garnish. I love this goddamn thing. Bonavita Coffee maker - 12 years old works perfect. Outdoors/sports/hobbies: Tikka rifle - will go to my grandkids. TRX - training system - nylon webbing - no reason for it not to last forever Pentax 645 Medium Format lenses. I’ve been using them across camera systems for decades now. Still like new, so smooth and beautiul. Got them new old stock from Japan 20 years ago. Unbelievably cheap at the time. Like $75 a lens. I have 4-5. You can adapt them these days to any mirrorless camera. I have a few RH pieces, like wardrobes, dinner table etc, all great, but from about 15 years ago. Not sure how they are doing nowadays. This is all natural selection. Having trouble finding quality sneakers
Shoes are tough buy it for life unless their boots in my opinion. I have Redwing MocToes that are 10 years old and meant to be repaired rather than replaced. Sneakers though I'm super hard on. I wear them until they get holes or are just too uncomfortable.

There are Timberland pro boots that are Goodyear Welted, can be resoled, and are worn by tradesmen. Even higher end books like Redwings/ Irish setters, etc. may only last one or two seasons if constantly wet and not properly dried, oiled, or cared for.

For boots, I only go Redwing. You can usually find scratch and dent discounts for like 50% off. I just got a pair of Mocs for $140 because there was a 1/16 inch hole punched in one of the tongues. That’s all that was wrong with them.

What's everyone's go-to sneaker?
I walk 6-10 miles daily 4 days a week on concrete and tile. I am absolutely in love with Redwings cooltech athletics. It has a plastic composite toe that makes it more comfortable to sit on my feet and is lighter than steel toe. Ive worn them every day to work for two and a half years before replacing. I am now trying out Salomon xt-slate. Theyre comfortable but too new to recommend.

Red Wing Heritage line, sadly their work line has gone far downhill. I wore 2216s for years and my most recent pair had the heel cup separate after a rather short time. They wouldn't do anything about it and it couldn't be repaired. Thorogoods weren't any better - their steel toe plastic support cracked after just over a year and caved into the boot. Check out my post history for both of these. Now onto Jim Greens. Options for lighter weight safety toe BIFL boots are slim. The PNW bootmakers (Nicks, Whites, JK) are all very good but far too heavy duty, hot, and overkill in design for indoor work on cement.

What the heck are you doing to your shoes? 6-12 months sounds like a you problem, not a shoe problem. I get at least three years out of Crocs which are my house shoes. My Red Wing 6705 work shoes are at least six years old and haven't even been resoled yet. I have dress shoes that date back to the '90s; resoled several times and the uppers are still in great shape. Don't pay more for shoes you're going to abuse. If you follow the care instructions and don't abuse them, Red Wing shoes and boots will last decades.

for longevity iron ranger is better option than blacksmiths, extra layer of leather on the front of boots with quattro stiching. so when it wears out of you can replace it. And definetly Red wings over riekers, Red wings are thick 2.5mm full grain oil tanned leather, with goodyear welted construction (can be resolved easily), triple stiching all over, high quality vibram soles, thick leather incole and cork filling, thick steel shank. Riekers are just shit. I am a cobbler. Making shoes and repairing them.

One pair he has had for over 5 years and one pair he’s had for over 1 year but puts 10-12K steps on them when he works 3-4 12hr shifts a week. Personally I would go with the red wings because they can typically be resoled and the leather cleans up nicely with polish.

I have two pair of redwings, iron ranger and moc toe 1907. The sole on the model 1907 is very soft and wears quickly. They’ve been resolved twice, and about to go back for a third. The iron ranger, I’ve had them for 4 years and still using the original soles, minimal wear. I have no experience with Reikers, but if it’s a leather boot, with a goodyear welt, it’s probably a decent boot. I wear them daily. I also apply the leather conditioner/paste…(I can’t remember what it’s called.) using a brush, all bought from the redwing outlet.

I have two pairs or red wings and they are worth it IMO - assuming you take care of them. Red Wings service warranties are awesome - I get mine cleaned and conditioned ones every 2-3 months (can be every month per policy). I wore the Iron Ranger nearly everyday for ~5 years, less so now - look great and are one of the most comfortable shoes I have. NOTE: Helluvah break in period due to the cork soles - worth it in the end though. I also have the rio flex pull on - favorite boot I have, but warm in summer.

I’m come to this conclusion as well. Most sneakers while initially comfortable are made of PU and are designed to fail and break down. I also have been going back and forth between Red Wing BlackSmiths and Iron Rangers. Just be aware the thick leather will be stiff and break in period will be a bear. Recommend thick wool socks. Darn tough makes socks specifically for boots.

Extended width sizing like myself I've liked Grant Stone or jump up to see if Whites has anything at a comparable price to the Red Wings (on sale maybe?). Mission Mercantile any good?
If someone asked me what I thought about Red Wings, I’d say, “It depends on the model, but as a whole they make pretty good shoes.” I would also add that Red Wings has a heritage line that is hard to go wrong with. Mission Mercantile really only has two lines - fully leather and canvas and leather. A better example would be Frost River. If you said I am buying a product from Frost River, I would “Well, all their stuff is great so you can’t really go wrong.” - because all their stuff is pretty much the same. I agree that there aren’t many brands like that, but specifically Mission Mercantile has such a consistent catalog that I feel like it’s the perfect brand to ask about as a whole.

The Mongrels are fine, but not a great deal if you look at construction. They are just leather glued to the sole. The Red Wings are Goodyear Welted and can be resoled - plus they will also last long enough to be resoled. You can buy one pair of Red Wing boots that last as long as three or four pairs of the Mongrels.

My vote is for the Red Wings. The leather is from a tannery they own called SB Foot, which is in the same city (Red Wing, MN) as the boot company. They make some of the best oil-tanned leather there is which is particularly good for wet/humid weather. The build quality is great for the price and the price is higher because they are made in the USA so the wages are reflected in the cost. I own a few pairs of Red Wings and they have been excellent. They wear in really nice, and they have easily been worth the cost for me.

My first pair of shoes that could be re-soled. Red Wing Iron Rangers. I honestly had no idea what I was missing with shoes until I was properly fit and wasn't buying cheap junk. I loved these so much I didn't want to wear them out immediately, or have potential mold issues living in a humid place and wearing them every day, so I bought a few more pairs of boots that I can have repaired. Of course, with nicer shoes, I wanted some nicer clothes too, so I starter paying more attention to higher quality natural fiber pants and shirts. 6 months later and I live an almost entirely plastic free life other than my electronics and car. I couldn't be happier. I expect most of this stuff to last until I die.

I have a beautiful pair of Redwing farmer boots that are 30+ years old. That is, high topped with relatively smooth soles for ease of scraping mud off. I tried to replace them a couple of years ago only to realize that Redwing has realized the money is in douchebags who buy their boots for style reasons without ever doing a bit of hard work in their lives. So, I guess the money is in discontinuing actual working men's boots, while coming out with "work boots" that appeal to posers.

Pioneer 10mm lever lifting belt - I think I am at 8 years with the thing and it is as good now as it was the day I bought it (better even, its broken in). I will not squat or deadlift without it. I will NEVER use another brand, If these guys ever go out of business I am going to buy an extra in my size and one a size up or a size down from my size so I always have one. They released a better lever (or so I hear, it looks like it can be more finely adjusted) and while I want it, I literally have a perfectly fine belt that looks like it will never die. The only way I would get the new one is if I lose enough weight/ gain enough weight to need a different size (slim/fat chance that will happen any time soon). Red Wing Iron Rangers - No other boot or shoe has lasted me this long, and it is not close. Customer service is outstanding and the only shop that has ever made me feel like they cared about me after I have spent money. I bring the boots in once or twice a year and they clean them up, oil them, and put on new laces for free, last time they even replaced all the rivets for free. When the sole finally goes I will have them re-sole it, and while that will cost it will be no where near what I would have paid for anything comparable. These boots have saved me money in the long run, which is saying a lot given they are like over $300. Rogue Gym Equiptment - I have a RML-490c rack, an Ohio Bar, a stainless steel power bar, some adjustable dumbbells, a sandbag, and all of it is top notch. I went with "buy once cry once" so I do not know how other stuff stacks up, its mostly steel after all, but Rogue has been wonderful and looks very nice. Titan is probably also great, but I haven't bought yet. Vitamix - After burning through three magic/nutri/whatevername bullets in a year I found a Vitamix on market place, and it just goes and goes and goes. I really could blend anything. I thought it was a little extra at first, because it was more than I had spent on any other counter top appliance, even used, but it is well worth it. It sure was less than the three broken blender combined. Steelcase Leap 2 desk chair - I got this chair used about 6 months after covid turned my workplace into work form home. It is just as good as the day I bought it. Watched some videos on how to properly personalize and adjust it and it is great. Well worth the spend. Honorable mentions: Bedrock Sandals. I lost my first pair during a float, but they were two years old and still going strong. My brother in law has had his for about twice that time and has had them resoled by the company at a decent price. Again, I tear through shoes, so two years out of that first pair is remarkable for sandals. Second pair is only a couple of months old, but they feel just as good. I really love all of my modular synths. Every time I have reached out to a maker for support they have replied so quickly and with such a good attitude. Make Noise, Joranalogue, Intellijel, Doepfer, NerdSEQ (seemingly one person, hello Thomas), and Erica Synths. Special shoutout to Erica Synths who saw that I could not get a piece to a shop and just sent me the exact part number to order so I could fix it myself. Special shoutout to NerdSEQ because Thomas is a monster developer who just gives his whole heart to this thing. He is still making better firmware, he is still answering questions in the discord and the forums. This is his baby and it shows every single day, what amazing work. It is an expensive hobby because of this, and I got most of my set up through some really lucky (for me) auctions and trades, but when I do buy new I love supporting these guys.

I wasn’t impressed with the Blundstones I bought last year. I’m in the US and Redwing boots have become my daily boot for work. Haven’t needed to resole them. They are heavier than Blundstones but definitely a tier higher and BIFL

In that case your best bet is a higher end boot, redwings are always a solid choice but there are lots of high end boots that you can resolve. You can also extend the life of your sneakers by swapping out the insoles, often these wear much more quickly than the outer part of the shoe. I have Reebok sneakers that go a few years with new insoles before I wear the rest of the shoe out.

Here's the easy button answer: 1. Take him to a Red Wing shoe store in person. 2. Get him fitted. Don't tell the salesman his size, get him fitted via a Brannock Device as I bet you $87 that whatever size he thinks he is, is not the size he actually is. 3. Now that the size is known, ask for goodyear welted or recraftable boots with a lean to grip and toe protection and buy what appeals to those three metrics.

Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)
Measure your feet with [brannock](https://brannock.com/pages/instructions-fitting-tips) device. Then you know your perfect size, go true to size. The leather will mold after your feet and give you the best support. Look for good year welted shoes or boots, they will last you a lifetime if you take care of them. Best thing is to have two or more pairs, so they can rest 2 days on and off. Recommend Red Wing for boots and Alden for Oxfords, or any other private own producers, not that many left so support the quality they offer. Sneakers are made of plastic in south asia by people with lousy work conditions, the production cost is 5 dollars for the expensive ones. They charge you 150 or more, so they can use insane amounts to hype their shit. Buy less, but better. You will feel better too

Yes, you can wear them in the rain or the snow without trashing them. You can also clean and reapply different leather finishes as necessary. Spending $350 on a pair of boots you can't wear in the rain would be ridiculous. At that point, just buy an expensive pair of shoes instead.

I have had a pair of Iron Rangers for over 4 years. I really like them, but I think we should be honest about what they are. They're a fashion boot for people who work in offices to wear on days with mildly poor weather. In that role, I think they're great. They look good, they keep my feet dry in the rain, and they seem like they'll last a very long time with "light-duty" use. But from my experience, traction is poor on snow, ice, or mud. They are uncomfortable if I'm on my feet all day (unlike sneakers or other work boots I have). They aren't insulated for cold weather. And I doubt they'd hold up with heavy-duty use. I'd definitely rather beat the shit out of a ~$100 pair of work boots than a pair of ~$300 Iron Rangers. Basically people should avoid them if they are looking for an actual work boot or hiking boot.

Lol I have them. And wear them. Bought them last year. But get hesitant to wear them if it looks wet out, or snow on the ground. Not heavy snow, but even a light snow. Feel like they're meant to be "roughed up" a bit to have that "rugged" look. But I can't do it 😂 I have the Red Wing chukkas and took me like, 4-5 years to relax and take them even in a light snow.

Best walking/daily shoes for traveling?
This will be personal preference but my go-to travel shoes are: 1. Stan Smiths. Not garish, easy to wear with most clothes. Plenty comfortable. Easy to find on sale. I have a lux white & green pair and a grey suede pair I rotate. 2. A loafer or Chelsea boot (mine are both Grant stone). These are good enough for walking all day and any nicer restaurant where I’d feel weird in Stan Smiths. Prior to the Chelseas I took Red Wing Heritage Chukkas to Paris.

They get cleaned regularly, and treated with Sno-Seal in the wintertime, and Dubbin in the summer. I don't wear them full time and also have an ancient pair of Zamberlan hiking shoes that I also use for working around my place. I look after these boots, but I don't baby them - they are for work and have performed admirably for many years. When I got them I thought that I might need to replace the Vibram soles, but I think they'll last as long as the uppers.

The main thing to look out for with Redwings is that they have rebranded a lot of cheaper shoes/boots these days. Anything from the Heritage line is great and they still make breat work boots, but I would be wary of any thing they sell that costs less than $300 as they may not be that actually manufacturer.

What are some items under $500 you’ve made so far that changed your life?
High end steel toed boots. For anyone here who has worked long days needing steel toes all shift, Redwing boots changed my life. I would be on my feet for 12 hr days and multi-week shifts so after that first week in anything, my feet would be fried. One of the things I would do once they got bad was roll them out with a lacrosse ball (hard rubber baseball sized) at the end of the day. I just don't get to that point anymore. To the inevitable nerd that says 'well actually they're 550$ where I am': Just get the boots, they last a lot longer too so you're really saving money when you think about it.

This thread quickly turned into life advice, of which most is sound. The Roth is a great idea. I am a young engineer in a cold climate too. I love my Red Wing boots. Have a couple pair but I got a pair to wear in the plant (automotive). Got the soles for concrete and have custom inserts and everything. Holy shit do they make a difference during shutdown season (12+hour days). If you love to cook like I do, raw cast iron pan (Lodge) and/or enameled dutch oven (Staub or La Creuset). Expensive but you'll give them to your grandkids. Instapots are amazing! Can make a roast in a few hours that taste like you roasted it for a day. Tools are also a great one. A nice socket set, or the combo Drill/Impact Driver kit.

I'm only commenting on this year old post because I also want to say F these boots and hope that someone reads this while trying to make their buying decision. I had a pair for a little over a year that I conditioned and cared for. One day I walked through some wet grass and the moc toe just collapsed... Maybe they were defective? Either way Thursday said take them to the cobbler and that it's "normal". Spend an extra $70 and buy some red wings, thorogoods, jim greens... really anything else.

Are red wing boots worth it?
I've had 2 pairs of Red Wing work boots, each of which are in the new "not as good as they used to be" era of Red Wings. Both pairs (1 safety toe & 1 non-safety toe) lasted multiple years and were the most comfortable work boots I have ever owned- and I've tried a number of work boot brands through the years. I'm now on my 3rd pair and I don't see myself buying from anyone else any time soon. Whether modern Red Wings are truly lower in quality than they previously were, they still hold up and give you long term support and comfort. No need for Dr. Scholl's with a pair of Red Wings. Should you choose to invest in a pair I highly doubt you'll be upset with your purchase.

In my experience, you need to be at the $250 mark, and that was 5 years ago, so $300 is probably more likely. That said, my buddy loves his Georgia boots that were $190. I personally love my US made Carolina boots. I have some Thorogood boots, but they are too narrow. If they fit, I'd like them a lot better. Thorogood and Red Wing are the starting point of quality boots from what most people say. I personally like my Carolinas, but they were only $15 or 20 cheaper than the Thorogoods. Goodyear welts and as much leather as possible is key to BIFL. Also, unless you need it for comfort, wedge soles tend to wear out. The Thorogood and Keen soles are about the best from what I hear, but a hard leather will last longer.

The secret to comfortable boots is good insoles. And if you get foot chaffing double socks. The heavier you are the more wear you'll put on shoes. It's just inevitable. Heavier trucks go through more tires. And millage matters. I personally like redwings for the money. But if you work a construction type job you'll probably still destroy them before the ten year mark even with re doing the soles and proper leather upkeep. Get fitted in-store if they still do that and expect a break in period where they aren't comfortable right off the bat.

Best shoes for walking/standing all day?
Depends a lot on what you're doing. In general I'd recommend a wedge sole and avoid things that are waterproof. Water resistant will be much more comfortable and keep the vast majority of people perfectly dry. Thorogood, Keen, Red Wing, Danner and Carolina are good choices. Nick's and White's are great choices. For casual/dress boots I'd check out Thursday Boot Company, Red Wing Iron Rangers, and Grant Stone.

They'll put new soles on them and treat the leather and gives them a bit more life Otherwise, I'd look through redwings catalog of work boots. I've had good luck with them. In NZ it’s pretty difficult sorry! I have a few pairs of red wings which I love but I bought them all overseas. And you’re right Docs aren’t worth the money. Instead maybe look into Solovair but you’ll have to import them. Or yeah red wings ideally but locally you’re looking at $6-700.

I’ve only had one pair of redwings but I’ve worn them regularly since 2011. Though only one or two days a week now. Any boot that I’ve owned that uses synthetic materials like Ariat, last me about a year give or take. Only reason I don’t buy more redwing 10875 is because I prefer to have a safety toe.

I wear Redwings.. Specifically the resoleable steel toe boots for my job. Have had them for 11 years now and resoled them once during that time and almost ready for a second time. They and other similar shoes are the closest you can get to a buy it for life shoe and they are VERY comfortable.

Comfy is the first win! My wife says I am "easy" on things. I do maintenance. I don't slam the door of the microwave. I clean my tools and put them away. I bought a steamer for my professional clothes - good tailoring is worth the investment, folks - and use it per instructions. I think that's part of BIFL. You should RTFM and be gentle and things will always be strong when you need to push hard. Like my steel toed shop boots. Third set of Vibram soles, but they hold up. Goose oil every few months, and newspaper inside if they get soaked. Those RedWings are probably 30 years old as well. It's that Terry Pratchet line in "Guards Guards" about how rich people don't have to spend as much money because their things last forever.

Does your employer offer a voucher for work shoes/boots? Many do. Either way, you’re going to want to go to a boot store that sells work boots like red wing. Be prepared to spend two to $400. If you want something more comfortable than steel toe you can get composite toe shoes which are light and easier to lace than boots

I currently rotate 8 pairs of Iron Rangers. I’m in operations management and walk around offices 90% of the time and worksites about 10%. Would highly highly recommend. They can be easily dressed up and dressed down depending on the day. They also break in pretty quickly and are easy to care for. A bit spendy up front, but they pay for themselves.

Love my Red Wing Iron Rangers and they are similar but not exact to your example. They took a couple weeks to break in, and I mean they really had to break in. But now they are insanely comfortable and formed to my foot. I highly recommend them but don’t want to undersell the break in period. They will also re-sole them for you and are made in the USA.

Best shoes to buy???
I would get some merino socks for starters. Smartwool, Darn Tough, Icebreaker, etc. Then I would get a pair of moc toe boots with a wedge sole. Danner Bull Run, White's Perry Select, Red Wing, Thorogood, etc. The Danners and Thorogoods feel great from the get-go, the others will take a week or two to break-in. I might consider adding a cushy insole if I felt so inclined. Then After a month or so, I would buy a 2nd pair...maybe something completely different - Lems or Xero, zero-drop maybe? I would rotate them. If they have to have safety-toes, I'd probably get another boot with a wedge sole. I work outside on a golf course year-round. I have a locker full of shoes/boots, with more in my car. Like you, I do a lot of miles on my feet. I have a lot of conditions to contend with, however, I am constantly changing my shoes. If my feet start to hurt or I don't have the right shoes on for what I need to do, I change them. I wear a pair to/from work, and might wear 3 different pair in a day. Again, being on my feet all day, I can't afford to have any issues with my feet/footwear. The only thing worse is just being cold and wet all day, lol.

Find your men's size is step 0 for you as that opens up the aperture much wider. Maybe you'll find some men's brands with sizing for you. Allen Edmonds, Alden, Red Wing and Frye are ones that jump to mind. BIFL means goodyear welt construction as the only brand mentioned that is 100% goodyear is Alden, so you have to look carefully to the others for country of origin and construction method.

Buy good quality leather shoes such as Red Wing, Oliver, Blundstone, and so on, then look after the leather with a good quality cleaner like Lexol and conditioner such as Bick 4. Use a horsehair brush to apply. Then when the soles wear out, fillet the tread off a car tyre (cut down to just above the steel wires - see YouTube for instructions) and glue it on with good quality glue such as Shoe Goo or Barge. That's how you make shoes that can do tens of thousands of miles and last up to 10 years with low running costs (pun intended).

Well, the easy button for most is to go to a Red Wing shoe store. Get an actual fitting as I'm 99.7% sure what shoe size you have in your head is not the shoe size you see that day when your foot hits the Brannock Device. Once you know you are say a 10EE, you can then buy 10EE boots from them or use that knowledge to buy from another source. Ask them for Red Wing shoes/boots that are recraftable under $500 and pick what you like, even if they have to be ordered if not in stock.

I actually did go into a red wing store, they sized me at a men's 10.5 and had me try that size. It fit well but I wasn't enthused enough on their shoes to pull the trigger on full price at that time. My ariats, sized for in a high end equestrian store, are a size men's 10 so I'm somewhere between 10 and 10.5. I also got my ariats when I was 100+ lbs fatter so believe it or not my feet got a lot thinner too.

Uniqlo basic tees and their selvage jeans are good everything else is sub par quality. Muji has better quality shirts. Charhartt wip are pricey but worth it. Work boots. If you can afford redwings those are amazing. If you cant, wolverines are good intro boots. Ive had a pair for 10 years and counting ive only had them repaired once. Watch I chose a seiko automatic not too expensive but reliable easy to maintain and relatively stylish. As someone that walks as a main mode of transportation there are NO BIFL sneakers/shoes so buy whatevers comfortable and just trust that youll need to replace them after a year (or 2 max) and since everyones foot is different youll need to find a shoe that you have tried before buying. Rain coat columbia is the best IMO. North face is literally the heaviest out of the rest. Patagonia is OK but theres something about it im not comfortable with. Backpack. Waxed canvas. Just remember to check the wax on it regularly. No specific brand in mind its more of the upkeep I have literally 20+ different insulated tumblers ive only used 2 on a daily basis. One is a standard 22oz silver one with no paint coating. Its all beat up but it has character and since it doesnt have paint my ocd doesnt get triggered. The second one is an old hydroflask back when they were just starting and not a money grab company they are now. Its an open top cap one for coffee. Lunch box, zojirushi lunch jar. Yes this is pricy but as someone who is well in his 30s and brings lunch to work this is awesome cause it keeps food hot for 8hrs (warm till 12hrs) ive had mine since college. This thing is pretty indestructible im pretty sure it would out live me. Also since im also part asian zojirushi rice cookers are built to be handed down generationally. Right now im out of what else to recommend but let me know if youre looking for a specific item ill let you know my thoughts on it. Yeah other people would recommend the best most expensive but on an actual practical level im a pretty safe bet to ask.

+1 r/goodyearwelt You prob want redwing iron rangers (10y+ on mine, amazing) or wolverine 1000 miles (it was between these and the rangers for me). Allen Edmonds is a slightly more formal looking brand, and usually runs more expensive, but they have factory seconds for cheaper and those go on sale sometimes. Getting your size takes patience, but I got a $500 pair for $200. Idk what women's options these brands have, but they're usually pretty clear that they recommend just getting the narrower size of the unisex styles. Thursday is cheaper and fine but you really get what you pay for on boots. You'll be happier longer with the good stuff.

I would go with Red Wings but it looks like most lines have been outsourced to other countries, and as such I am worried about the quality possible having dropped. Thorogoods look good but I'm just worried about their winter abilities, as I plan to use these boots for daily use, so that way I can get good traction on concrete, mud, and ice should the need arise.

At 19 I'd recommend buying cheap shit, then figure out what things bother you When I got out of the Navy I had to figure out how to dress like an adult. I bought crappy fast fashion boots and they disintegrated in like 6 months and it drove me nuts. I bought Redwings, and they lasted much longer, but I didn't love the style, and they stretched out the uppers when I sent them for a resole Fast forward 3 or 4 more pairs, and I love my Whites CMPs. I genuinely enjoy watching their website for new leather or style options But I still wear cheap shirts, because for whatever reason that doesn't bother me My wife and I have some IKEA furniture from 20 years ago, because it's good enough for the bookcase we don't use But the stuff that we use every day - the stuff that's important to us - we did the research and bought much better brands

Ladies, what are the MOST comfortable boots you’ve worn for walking 10k+ steps a day?
Any “Buy it for Life” boot is going to be full leather and leather typically requires some sort of break in period. If you want cushioning in them you’re also likely going to need a separate insole that is easy to replace. That said I own both red wings (Clara) and Canada west boots (6807 Romeo) and they’re great (once things are broken in). I’ve had Blundstones in the past and I didn’t like them at all, I felt they were not worth the money I spent on them. Please check out RoseAnvil on YouTube for breakdowns on boots and what makes them quality. He predominantly speaks of mens footwear but you can take those lessons and apply them to women’s.

Tactical boots for security guard
I've had great experience with Red Wing. Waterproof is easy. Stores throughout the US, EU, JP, and the Pacific. They ask good questions to find you the best product. My 6706 shoes (I need toe protection, waterproof, slip resistant, grease and oil resistant but not boots) are six years old and not even close to being ready to resole much less replace. Maintenance so far has been brushing them off when I happen to be wearing them while sweeping out our garage.

They’re not rugged, they’re not heavy duty, they are just the most comfortable, lightweight work boots I’ve ever owned, and they look good and use good quality components. If you beat the hell out of your boots, Red Wings aren’t for you. If you’re a field engineer who spends 30% of the day walking around job sites and the other 70% in the office, they’re fantastic.

1. There are waterproof boots and non-waterproof boots. There is no such critter as mostly waterproof as that's literally not a thing as every non-waterproof boot is waterproof...until its not. 2. We have no budget nor style recommendations. I'd recommend you go to a Red Wing store and get a fitting then discuss options after you specifically state that you want shoes that can be resoled.

I'm not even sure you can get $30 boots these days. Even fake welted boots from mall brands you might get for $30 on deep discount, but not every day. I have TS as well, though my motor tics are a bit different. FWIW, I've had a pair of Red Wing boots for about 20 years. They can be reconditioned. FWIW, I would recommend looking for a brand that will repair and resole the shoe/boot as the wear on it will be inevitable, but the ability to service it means you don't have to throw them out once they wear.

Can confirm that Docs stopped putting shanks in their boots after a pair I bought had the sole split open. Which is why I went with Red Wing lol.

Well it has been a while. I did work at the original factory at Cobbs Lane among others. Kinda weird to put no shank or midsole in them. The worst thing they did imo was outsource having a lot of the uppers made in China. It was then that they experienced big quality issues. This was around 2000 i guess. Back then workers could buy one pair a month for £15. Crazy the prices they ask for them now. Honestly i'd rather buy a pair of Redwings.

Bought some Darn Tough Socks and can never see myself going back
My redwing's get the most compliments out of my entire shoe collection, and I have some cool ones including some retro 3s and a few other pairs of Nike. I get way more compliments on my boots in general, and they get beat up due to work.

I had Red Wing pull on boots when I worked in a seafood joint. They were very splash resistant and slip proof. The leather went to hell in a year from all the fish juice and salt. It's still way nicer than a 3 month duty cycle.

Redwing will resole your boots and they're the most comfortable I've had. Especially with the custom orthotic inserts. I get a new pair every year from work.

How do you feel about buying things?
When you put it like that, guess I'm both. For example, boots... I purchase Red Wing Heritage because they're Made in USA by hand, crazy high quality, and I can resole them if/when I'd like a new look/feel. Do I NEED brown and black? No. Do I want both for options? Yes. In that sense, I may be over consuming, depending on how you look at things, but I will most definitely wear both regularly so they're not "just sit in your closet" excess. And it may go a little deeper, actually. For instance, one could easily get by with Moc Toes alone but why not also have cap toes for a different look? Again, are they needed? Absolutely not. Do I like to pair certain boots with particular outfits? Yes. Same principle goes for even basic Goodwell t-shirts. Once I found a basic high quality miUSA solid color option, I snap up about a half dozen options. Mind you, I've now worn each of them on a regular rotation for the past 4 years and they barely show wear. So... "Buy It For Life" (for me) is more synonymous with extra high quality than buy once.

Redwing makes a logging boot that's aluminium toe and steel shank with rubber toe caps. [Photo 1](http://i.imgur.com/xZ1yS83.png) [Photo 2](http://i.imgur.com/n9ofZ2G.png) They're also waterproof, which is a must for me. The only other boots I've had that I like more are Haix. I've still got my Haix that I bought in 2007/8 and had them resoled 4 years ago. Not because they needed it, but I just wanted to see what they'd come back like. The Redwings replaced them because of a worker's comp injury.

A Red Wing dealer near me has a yearly tent sale where you can get all kinds of great deals on a bunch of different brands of shoes & boots. A couple of years ago, I was there and they had a stack of Red Wing steel toe boots that had the metatarsal guards removed (I think they are common for logger boots - it's a guard that covers the whole top of the foot). Anyways, they were really cheap because they were obviously altered (I think like $40) but the toe seemed like it has double or triple thick leather - I don't wear mine everyday but they have held up really well and are still quite comfortable. I doubt that it would be easy to find a similar deal, but I suppose you could look at a boot like that and maybe remove the metatarsal guard, so you still have an extra thick covered toe. Mine is very similar to style 6889.

Stitching blow out here after 5 years. For the price a good pair of boots though. I have two pairs of Chippewas and a pair of Red Wings so I will not need boots for a while. After reading through the White's catalog I will be ordering from them. One problem I had with the Chippewas is that the lining is fabric and tore all up after a couple years. The lining on White's is about the same as the exterior leather of the other boots. The exterior on the White's is much thicker than the other brands. I think that the price difference is justified for around $350 or so for a substantially better build quality.
