What are the Best Robot Vacuum Right Now?
I’ve had a Roomba 960 for almost 7 years now. We’ve replaced the wheel treads, roller bars, and side spinning brush thing regularly along with filter changes. It’s running strong still. It looks beat up a bit but works well! I’m guessing like a lot of tech, the new stuff is a lot more dependent on software, whereas the older stuff just does its thing and has a lot of replaceable components.

Automatic floor cleaning
I've had my Roomba 600 (650?) for 10 years now. The only issue is the battery is certainly not BIFL. I think I'm on my 3rd or 4th one. I figure the current battery has got another 6 months left in it before I buy a third party replacement off eBay. The unit itself still works great.

Stuff you will continue buying for life
My simple, early generation roomba vacuum is going on 8 years old. The parts are easily replaceable (sold by company or knockoffs online) and you can EASILY take it apart, remove pieces, clean it, replace, and put back together with a YouTube video. Incredibly simple. It picks up so much dog fur, it's crazy.

I have a nearly 6 year old Roomba i7+, but I would not bank on any new robot vacuum to match that. Roombas at the time were known as pretty serviceable for a consumer electronic product. In the time since then, the market really exploded and iRobot didn't keep up. Were they built better than a Roborock? Maybe, but no one cares if it didn't have the latest features. So now they might not be around much longer. Now it seems like there is a new product from Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs, etc. every other week. I'd guess at that rate, they are intended to be pretty disposable even if they cost $1k.

I rarely vacuum my house even though I had a dog and child because my Roomba is so good, and it only cost me $300! Thankfully we don’t have a large house but we do have a good amount of carpet unfortunately so the house gets super clean from the 1 hour and 40 mins our Roomba does while we are at work during the week. Our first one worked hard for years and then died and omg the house got gross so quick without, it was very eye opening.

tbh, i have a roomba and you do not need the internet for it - wifi is required for firmware updates and smart home control, but firmware is not something you need long term unless it's breaking often. I operate hours disconnected most of the time as they are all memory based. I have x2, the older model I have is on year 5 without any issues and I keep it maintained (like any other vac)

I've had one of the cheaper roombas for about 5 years now. The key is to keep them maintained and cleaned. You can't just set it and forget it. You have to constantly pick them up and inspect all the moving parts. Take off the rollers and get all of the hair and whatnot out of the spindles, take off the spinny brush completely and clean underneath it, change the filters, use an air canister or air gun to dust off the innards, etc.

These may seem random but they’ve improved my life so much: -good quality nail clippers and tweezers- they get the job done the first time and my nails aren’t jagged! -a roomba- I deal with a couple of different mental illnesses and physical ailments so vacuuming usually falls behind. Having one of these bad boys gives me extra time in between nerving to vacuum -cord free swivel vacuum. Vacuuming is actually enjoyable now. And our new one is much more powerful and doesn’t get hair stuck in the brushes. Not having to constantly clean it makes it much more enjoyable

Do smart home items really work in long term?
No. They're usually designed for an ideal that doesn't exist. I have a Roomba and it's more of an inconvenience than a benefit - it expects the floors to be completely clear and if you have a lot of clutter, it's terrible. Its navigation program is essentially random because in a clear space, this actually works better than methodical. But when it's running, I frequently have to grab the remote and steer it out of the box it's gotten stuck in. It does do a pretty decent job of cleaning, even on carpet. Easily comparable to the big hoover. But if I have to pick up everything off the floor beforehand I might as well get the big hoover anyway. Most of the other 'smart' devices on the market are cloud-linked. I have avoided all of those and made sure they will work without internet access - there is no reason for a dishwasher/oven/grill/lamp/whatever to require internet access to perform its primary function. And honestly, what possible reason could you have for wanting to turn on a desk lamp while you're in another country? Or turn on your oven when you have to put the food to cook in it anyway? They are often completely pointless and are in fact a solution in search of a problem. I have a bunch of WiFi sockets which I bought specifically to run with open-source firmware (Tasmota) and be controlled by Home Assistant (also open-source). The original manufacturers can and routinely do give up with their products and shut down the servers they depend on, and you have no recourse other than buying another device. The e-waste is horrific. It's planned obsolescence, pure and simple. My approach is a lot more work but the devices will still be ticking long after the cloud service is gone.

Most smart items I’ve bought have lasted considerably past the point of “I wish they would fail so I could justify upgrading to new tech.” My original Ring doorbell and cameras are going on 8 years old. My first Kasa outlets are going on six years (did replace some when doing other outlets). Upgraded smart locks for new tech, old one went to MiL’s house and is 10+ years old. Original Ecobee going on nearly 10 years old. Our original Roomba was probably the biggest new tech casualty - good and bad, it worked just as well brand new as it did 8 years later. I couldn’t justify buying a top Roborock while my Roomba was still kicking, so I ended up with a Eufy like 70% off - barely smart but it is so much quieter and does an awesome job cleaning.

We have a robot vacuum (base model roomba) that I basically use to sweep under the king size bed only because I’m really allergic to dust and it’s just too hard to sweep with allergies. That being said, the first week we brought my daughter home it threw itself down the basement steps and still works after bouncing across the room. Scared the crap out of me when it happened but it’s a funny story now. Also with a preschooler it doesn’t work in any other room because of all the toys and furniture she leaves around.

We've had our Roomba for 3 years now and it is just the best. You have to keep the floors clean and obviously it might depend on the homes layout how useful it is. But I think it's worth it. We also got a couple of smart bulbs just for the bedroom and it's cool to ask Alexa to turn them on or dim them, but not anything life-changing. It also gradually brightens as your alarm is getting ready to go off to help you wake up (of course that's more annoying than anything in the morning lol)

Recommendations for a repairable robot vacuum?
I have the roomba i7+ and repairing it is good except for the charging contact pads. It’s difficult to reach them on the robot as it’s deep inside. I had to remove almost everything just to see it and even then the mess of wires and sensores made replacing them more trouble than their worth. Hoping the charging base’s contact tips are much easier to replace.
