Dopp kits usually fail at the zipper or the liner. They all look nice on a shelf, then fall apart the first time they meet steam and toothpaste. Cheap coil zippers gum up fast once moisture gets in. Look for a metal YKK #8 or #10 with a wide tape so it does not tear out. For the body, full grain leather or heavy 1000D nylon actually survives bathroom humidity. Anything “premium vegan leather” just cracks and sheds flakes. Inside, a single piece waterproof liner holds up way better than those glued-in pockets that start peeling in a year. Handles rip when the anchors are single stitched, so box stitching matters if you cram the thing full like everyone ends up doing. If you want Canadian, the older Roots Heritage leather kits were decent, and Repp Sports still does sturdy Cordura travel bags. Everything else in the department store aisle is basically landfill with a zipper.

When I was looking for everyday, quality leather bags, I ended up purchasing a few from the Canadian brand Roots and have been very happy with them. They're not the fanciest, but I think they're cute and seem to be good quality for a reasonable price.

May I suggest Roots? They use quality leather and I do have a 20 year old bag that has held up remarkably well. I purchased a new one about a year ago that looks great! They are often about $300 CAD. I don’t care to spend $$ on luxury bags and to be honest, spending $300 on a purse feels like a spurge to me! Your wife and I may be on the same page here!

I second Shinola Detroit. Their bags are beautiful. I have never been able to afford a bag, but I have a watch and a journal cover. My husband has a wallet. All will last for life. For a more affordable option, I also like my two leather purses from Roots. They are ten years old and just as good as the day I got them.

Roots. I have had one pair of sweatpants from there for 7 years now and they are amazing. Warm in the winter but cool in the summer. Incredibly comfy and they stay on top of their production using natural and sustainable sources. They also are very aware of modern day slavery and have a rigorous standards in their supply chain to assure they are treating the people who make the clothes fairly and ethically. I'm super into that side of things, so it is a huge plus for me. They are on the pricier side, pj set being ~$100, with sweat shirts / pants being ~$80 but they will last forever.
