Important Kitchen Essentials?
For kitchen tools and utensils, I would look for items that are 18/10 stainless steel. This will be the most corrosion resistant. This is important if you plan on putting them in the dishwasher using hot washing or drying cycles. If you want 18/10 and save a bit of money, have a look at **Zwilling's ZWILLING Pro** series. I own the Serving Spoons \[2\], Y-Peeler, Lasagna Turner, Silicone Spatula (aware you're avoiding silicone), Universal Tongs, and Pizza Cutter. If you go to Zwilling's homepage, there should be a pop-up offering you 15% off with e-mail signup; turn off your ad blocker if needed. Additionally, **Henckels' stainless steel** tools are 18/10. I own the Large Whisk, Stainless Steel Slotted Serving Spoon, Stainless Steel Skimming Ladle, and Stainless Steel Soup Ladle. *Don't* buy the Henckels Ice Cream Scoop - I don't think it's 100% stainless steel. On Henckels' homepage, there's a blue button towards the bottom right page for 15% off as well. My top 18/10 tool choice is **Rösle**, but it's difficult to find lower prices. I like their Round Handle series. Their strainers and whisks are particularly good. *Avoid* Rösle peelers - they seem to get bad reviews. There's an option for newsletter signup and saving 10% on their website, but you'd still be paying more (probably) in comparison to Zwilling Pro and Henckels.

Rosle (round handle) fine mesh sieve is the best. Had it for almost 5 years, good as new. I wouldn’t throw boiled potatoes or other hard veg in it even though I’m confident it wouldn’t dent or break it’s so sturdy!

Going to university for 5+ years – what are the best affordable BIFL items I should invest in?
I have several kitchen items that I bought in college (or shortly after) over 20 years ago and don’t regret any of them. Adding a few extra items I didn’t know about at the time but that would have been useful, too. - a good paring knife, either Henckel or Wusthof. I recommend going to Williams Sonoma and holding them to see which is most comfortable for you. - a good chef’s knife. Mine is a 7.5” Mac Superior. - bread knife if you’re into bread. I will come back with the name of mine… can’t recall the Japanese at the moment. - simple plates/bowls from Corelle or Crate and Barrel - Pyrex 2-cup and 4-cup measuring cups - a small, fine mesh strainer (Rosle) for loose leaf tea and misc tasks - stainless steel nesting prep bowls with lip to hold them by

Staub 5qt cocotte Rosle stainless steel utensils (made in Germany is best) I can’t pick a number 3… This year I bought Blundstone lug boots in black leather. I love them… And 2 pairs of darn tough socks. BEFORE I found this sub. Lol and I’m British! I’m so glad I found them. Another good pair is “SmartWool” Merino wool socks are very worth it. Same for Mattress topper… I invested in a WoolRoom topper. It’s amazing. Keeping me cool this summer and so comfortable. Maybe Boos maple chopping board and Wusthof classic 8” chef knife! I don’t often splurge but when I do I try my best to make it a buy it for a long time investment

Where to buy stainless cooking utensils?
**Rösle** is a great brand. They use 18/10 stainless steel which is more corrosion resistant than 18/8 or 18/0. The Round Handle series tools have watertight handles and hanging rings. But I would avoid their peelers; I think the designs are sub-optimal, hence the bad reviews. Zwilling has a line called **Zwilling Pro Tools** which is also 18/10 stainless.

Briggs and Riley, Yeti, All Clad, Rosle for utensils, Zojirushi for rice cooker, villeroy and boch for ceramics, Crate and Barrell for platware and their mix and match silverware, Honeywell air purifiers, Lancome and l'occitane for creams and body oils. Random but hope that helps!

Some good articles for Europeans?
Although the sub is very US centric, most BIFL brands in general are European, with some notable exceptions like Patagonia (which you can find in Europe). Kitchen: Demeyere, Le Creuset and Staub. I don't think there's better for cooking than these 3. Rösle kitchen tools. Italian coffee mills and machines from several high end brands. Peugeot pepper mills. Even popular Silestone counter tops are Spanish. Appliances: Miele, Siemens, Bosch... Clothing: (There's a thousand brands, but to name a few BIFL ones) Sunspel, Zegna, Logo Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Brioni, Falke (although Socks are not really BIFL, they are for sure better than the over hyped Darn Tough around here). Luxury items: Any serious watch brands or luxury hand bags are European, just name a brand. Depending on your budget, you have a lot to choose from. And then depending on other niche stuff that you might be looking for, there's probably some local producer from Italy, Spain or Portugal that will have it in word class quality.

Can opener that doesn't break in less than a year
We discovered [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rosle-Handheld-Can-Opener-with-Pliers-Grip-12757/203702461) can opener from Rosle about 15 years ago, and it’s been fantastic. Never needs cleaning, and it takes lids off cans in such a manner you can put the lid back on for storage. Also, no sharp edges. We highly recommend!
