What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?
I feel this about my Rotring 600

Someone left this plastic piece of junk at my work. Does anyone make a BIFL quality pen with similar features?
Ugh. I wish Rotring didn’t use plastic in their pens though. I’ve shelled out for all metal types like embassy titanium, tuff writer stainless(thing is heavy) and Karas. Rotring disappointed me more than I care to admit. Which stinks cause their main design feels great in-hand.

I came to reply with Rotring.

Yarp. I had a rapid pro for about 7 years. And a 600 now for about 5. Swapped to a Kara’s kustom ultem for the last few months. I love the shape of the rotring. But never found a refill I completely fell in love with.

I have a rotring 800, similar look to the 600 but with a retractable tip. I love this thing, use it daily and carry it in my pocket often. I had an issue with the mechanism after 2 years but Rotring sent me a brand new one after a quick customer support ticket. It's been about another 18 months, no issues so far.

Shape and feel looks close to a Rotring 600. But that is pen only. I’m a bit of a pen nerd. Most if not all high quality pens will be pen only pretty much. All the other features will be missing I’m afraid.

Refillable pen suggestions
I am a bit of a pen snob, but Rotorings are workhorses. I love them.

Refillable pen suggestions
I’ve had my Rotring 600 for almost three years now and it’s literally bulletproof. Being able to swap in my favorite refills (I use Uni Jetstream 0.38 personally) makes it so worth it.

I have been using a Rotring Freeway Rollerball Pen for over 20 years. You can still find them used for $15.

Refillable pen suggestions
Tbh many cheap pens that feels good in the hand should last for a lifetime. If you want to be sure, use something metal. Personally I mostly use a Rotring 600 3 in 1, but anything will do. I also still have pens I got for free 20 years ago that work fine, I just transplant the ink cartridges over from worse free pens. As usual you also need to consider why you want to buy this item for life in order to make the right choice. If it's for environmental reasons: Metal pens will probably pollute more than just any cheap plastic pen because of the energy needed to process metal. Handling is highly subjective, I prefer metal, but I know people who prefer light plastic. And if it's for money, the cheapest option is actually to use free pens.

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
similarly, for the southpaw pencil fans: a rotring 800, preferably with 2H lead (*not* HB/american #2)

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
it's not that I don't enjoy writing or pens that have a nice little heft to them, actually my favorite pen that I use almost daily is a Rotring mechanical pencil that takes those fat 2mm leads, maybe I should give my fancy pens some love too, because I don't want to make a stranger on the internet sad.

Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?
Going on 8 years and 5 refills of my Rotring 800 and no sign of major wear. Still going strong.
