  Your best bet for all in one is a pair of trail runners that are comfortable, functional, can be used in the gym/trail/street, and are fashion-forward in a streetwear sense to the point where you could get away with wearing them dressed up to dinner somewhere. Salomon S/Lab Genesis, Tracksmith Eliot, Nnormal Kierag 01, one of the Nike Pegasus Trails in certain colors, etc. These are all sneakers and are not BIFL. The justification for purchasing is not to last forever but rather to not have to pack multiple shoes and check luggage.

  Snow hiking shoes that lasts

  You don't need to go half a size up. Just wear normal medium/heavy wool socks. Also pretty much any gore-tex hiking boot at an outdoorsy store you will find will be good. Asolo and Salomon have plenty of good options for example.

  In my experience, Allbirds are well marketed, comfortable, but lacking on the durability front. Hokas aren’t everyone’s cup of tea due to the thick cushioned soles on most of their styles, I have some and they certainly take some getting used to in my opinion. Salomon makes some great trail shoes that last a long time, and they’re well made, but not BIFL.

  The travel shoe struggle is something I spent way too much time overthinking. Used to pack 3 pairs minimum because I couldn't find anything that worked for both walking miles through cities and looking presentable at dinner. The athletic ones made me look like a tourist everywhere, and the "travel" dress shoes fell apart after one trip. What changed everything for me was getting custom fitted shoes from IAMBIC. Yeah they're pricey but hear me out - I can walk 20,000+ steps through airports, cobblestone streets, whatever, and my feet feel fine. Plus they look professional enough that I don't stick out at business dinners or nicer restaurants. The app fitting process seemed weird at first but the shoes fit better than anything I've owned. I've put mine through hell - Singapore humidity, NYC winters, hiking through Patagonia between meetings - and they still look great. For more budget friendly options, I've heard good things about the Salomon X Ultra for pure comfort if you don't care about looks. My colleague swears by his Veja V-10s for that sweet spot of comfort and style but I haven't tried them myself. The Ecco Soft 7s are decent too if you need something more formal looking. But honestly after dealing with foot pain for years during travel, investing in proper footwear was worth every penny for me.

  Good leather ankle boot for hiking/snow/rain?

  rockports are comfortable but you're right about the build quality concerns - they tend to use more glued construction rather than welted. for waterproof leather ankle boots that'll last, check out danner's trail models (like the trail 2650) - they're resoleable and gore-tex lined. also, merrell's moab 2 mid waterproof are a classic for a reason. if you want to step up, salomon's quest 4d gtx are incredibly durable. the key is looking for 'goodyear welt' or 'stitchdown' construction - it means they can be resoled when the sole wears out, which makes them truly BIFL.

  The 21st Century Ruined Everything 😭

  It feels like you're looking for more of a fashion piece, so you might want to skip this comment, but as far as function I have had good luck with Salomon boots. Boots/shoes aren't really what I think of as BIFL, at least if they are getting used regularly, but mine have been well made and have excellent longevity. Their less heavy duty winter boots start around $140.

  I've tried all different pairs of winter boots. The reality is if you are dealing with ice, get slip on ice studs. I've not found a plain boot sole that handles ice well. Keep them in your backpack or whatever you used when walking to work (my walk is 30 minutes and I love in Ottawa). I keep them in a ziplock. Making sure to dry them when I get home or to the office. Current pair are Solomon's. Low on the ankle. Good for post snow, when it's cleared. Have another I've the ankle pair for during snow.

  Looking for a durable winter boots that will truly last

  It's a bit hard to recommend boots without knowing what you use them for and the environment your in. Personally I use several different types depending on the activity I am doing. Here in Canada, you want winter boots that will keep you warm at -30 c if your working outside or sledding, for that I have an old army pair of white mukluks for the really cold days and a pair of Solomon Toundras for activities that I need ankle support. For shoveling snow I have a 20 ish year old pair of slip on Kamik boots. As you can see use and environment is very subjective. Anything south of Toronto a good pair of Goretex boots would suffice.

  Durable walking boot recommendations?

  Maybe your expectations for a pair of boots are too high. I am a letter carrier who walks 15-20 km a day. I am happy if my boots last 6 months. It depends on the distances involved and what you use them for. I find it's worth spending more on better brands like Salomon hiking boots. They last a bit longer. Also, the size is important to make sure your foot is supported, but you still have room in front of your toes. Sometimes, boots wear faster because your foot is too cramped in the boot, which puts strain on the seams and weak points. I also buy insoles for better support because provided insoles tend to be cheap and insufficient.

  What product would you seriously stockpile if you found out they weren't going to sell it anymore?

  For me two main things: the lace to the toe design is as comfortable as anything I've tried and the technical design of the shoe makes it capable of everything from general hiking to daily wear to scrambling. As an added bonus they are easily the most durable footwear of any kind that I've tried. They outlast my Danner combat boots, they outlast my Thorogood work boots, the outlast my Salomon Quest/Forces,...

  Like others are saying in the thread, for the most comfortable shoe, go to a running store and fitted there. But keep in mind that running shoes wear out after 500 miles of running or \~1,000 miles of walking. If you're looking to have a shoe that lasts longer, tell them you're looking for a trail running shoe with a lot of support. I got \~7 years out of my Salomons as winter running/walking shoes, and these days I use them as yard work shoes since they don't have the support they used to. You might have luck with a good pair of hiking shoes too. Meindl makes the comfort fit walker that should hold up for a long time.

  Lowa, Salomon, Hanwag. Have had many years of life out of all three brands, and comfortable right out of the box. The Salomons run a little tight, but fit like a glove after a few treks!

  Lowa, Salomon (more lightweight but durable), Danner, & Raichle. I think Asolos had their day, but no longer. There are plenty of newer brands but I’m out of the hiking game now days. Low cut speed lace Salomon GTXs were my favorites.

  Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)

  Rather than looking at running shoes, try looking at hiking/trail running shows- these will typically have a higher density/sturdier sole because they are designed to move over rough terrain for long distances. This will significantly increase the longevity of the shoe compared to running shoes which typically have lighter, lower density soles and are really not suited to prolonged use by heavier individuals. These hiling/trail running shoes will also typically have wider options available, some brands to look out for; Garmont, Scarpa, New Balance, La Sportiva, Merrell, Danner, Salomon. Avoid On Cloud like the fucking plague, they are terrible shoes. Also, combine the shoes with a good foot bed, like Superfeet, which will offer much better support and help regulate posture and foot alignment, increasing overall comfort and longevity of the shoe.

  Shoes always seem to wear and soles delaminate at that flex point near the forefoot. It’s weird that no one has designed a shoe with a rugged flexible joint there. As many have said, I’ve found Salomon shoes to wear for a long time. Lowa does well too.

  I also use Salomon for daily wear and also get 6-7 year out of each pair. I honestly think that’s pretty much as far as it can go for daily sneakers and I’m happy with it. This pair may have been defective or they aren’t meant to be used daily. I get one of the trekking models and those handle pretty much everything from daily wear to hiking on jagged karst and still last me that long.

  Salomon Hiking gear. Great customer service

  I wear them every day and put some serious miles on them. I bough one pair from REI on clearance and found another pair at their “returned gear” that was new and a different color. After three years, my older pair did have some of the rubber on that toe peeling up, I shoe goo’d it back. They are very comfortable. The way the lace on top of the foot is “deleted” with the parallel eyelets is what makes the biggest difference in comfort for me.

  I prefer trail runners. The usual failure point is the sole-glue coming apart. Nike acg used to be good but very overpriced. Merrell, Salomon are excellent... Right now I'm wearing a pair of Adidas terrex free Hiker 2 - gore-tex (last year's model, sold a huge discount because less popular color combo.... Msrp 180, bought for $90) Incredibly comfortable and supportive with cloud foam... My daily shoes are overpriced red wings. (shouldn't prices have dropped, when they moved production overseas??)

  Best hiking boots for men - Suggestions needed.

  I hike and backpack a ton across the American mountain and desert west. I've stopped wearing boots entirely unless I'm doing a winter summit attempt here in Colorado where snow and ice will be prominent on the route. I wear a particular brand of Salomon trail runners.  I go through one pair a year between all of my trail running, hiking, summiting, and canyoneering. Outdoor equipment that is light and effective at its job is just not durable.  If you go for durable gear - you will end up carrying a lot more unnecessary weight.  I do not subscribe to a BIFL philosophy when it comes to my outdoor gear. As for your other questions - waterproof boots keep water in and don't dry out.  That's a far worse situation to be in then just having wet shoes for a bit until they dry out.  Work on ensuring you have strong ankles and good balance instead of relying on the shoe.  The show eventually will give way anyway.

  Need new boots for dessert hiking.

  Any of the top tier hiking brands should be good. Keen, asolo, Salomon and others few things I'd recommend... 1 get a boot that fits well (don't pick a brand, pick the boot that fits well from one of the top brands). 2 unless youre worried about the sides getting torn, get something breathable (I would avoid heavy leather use and waterproof boots especially for the desert.) It's going to be dry and if you step in water your feet will dry out quick. The breathability will keep your feet healthier. Lastly and this depends on you but if you'll be doing a lot of miles. . .consider a lighter weight boot to save your legs. Most shoes/boots are really only good for a few hundred miles before the supportive layers in the sole wear out and some lighter weight top materials will last that long anyway. Hiking shoes/boots are something you want to be good shape to not hurt your body long term. That includes not wearing them past when they are no longer supportive. O btw get lighter weight wool socks to pair with them. personally I'd be out there in some trail runners that are comfy allowing the sides to get torn on rough terrain a bit before I'd wear a heavy non breathable boot. Your feet will love you for it. I've done lots of desert miles over my life. Including a number of week(s) long backpacking trips on and off trail. My thoughts on this aren't really traditional bifl but I do have that mindset for a lot of things. My experience says get a really good brand and don't make it do more than it should since bifl isn't entirely appropriate here.

  Hiking shoes - all my footwear gets a worn out heel from the inside and I am desperate to find something that lasts.

  See a podiatrist to make sure nothing fishy going on, otherwise invest in good boots. Uneven wear exacerbates stress on your joints, so it is good you are investigating solutions to this. I am big on the Salomon Quest 4DGTX boots, and put a couple hundred km between pairs, minimum. The downside of these boots is the sole is nonreplaceable. With an orthotic insert, I go any distance and have zero problems with my joints or uneven wear. My hobbit feet sweat a lot, and the Salomons breathe well, which is why I stay with that model. I used to wear Vasque boots with replaceable soles but they were too hot and didn’t breathe enough for my feet.  Also vibram soles on hiking boots are trash on damp rock for some reason. Solomon has some special sauce in their soles that makes them more grippy.

  I, a European, wear Salomon trekking shoes almost exclusively. They’re not pretty but not ugly either. Just extremely functional. Comfortable, light, non slip and waterproof. What more can you ask for.

  If you're expecting to walk serious distances you might look at the more casual models from hiking brands such as Lowa or Salomon. Just for around town a simple retro model from any brand (Adidas Samba?), Sketchers or even just All Stars will do fine.  To me behavior screams American more than outfit, maybe except for elderly travellers with their cruise ship tour guide wearing a baseball cap, New Balance dad sneakers and oversized kaki slacks pulled up to their armpits.
