  Which Carry On is the Best?

  I have had a Samsonite Freeform Hardside Carry-On for nine years now and taken it all over the world. I got it on sale for like $99. Ultralight, fits the majority of international airlines, wheels have held up even over cobblestones and snowy streets, when it gets dirty I just hose it down and give it a little scrub with dish soap. It has some very basic organization inside, mostly just to keep things from shifting, but I prefer that because it maximizes the usable space.

  Best Carry On Luggage for 2026?

  Carry-on luggage recommendations will inevitably vary a ton based on how frequently you travel. If you only travel 3-4 times a year, you don’t need the same luggage that pilots use. If you’re on a plane weekly for work, you’ll get a lot more benefits from the brands being recommended here. I only travel 3-4 times a year and my Samsonite hard shell carry-on that I bought from Kohl’s 8 years ago is still perfect, zero issues. I’m glad I didn’t spend $800 on a premium brand because it would be wasted on me

  What is the Best Backpack for Laptop to Buy?

  Tumi is really not for everyone. Their bags are nice to look at but are so uncomfortable if you like to get the most of the space in your bag. I’d suggest Samsonite instead, but only if you’re in Europe or outside of the US. The don’t carry their best stuff in the US (at least where I’m at).

  Leather bag for work (i want Samsonite Classic Leather Backpack)

  My 10c: I travel international a lot for work. I have the classic leather backpack and the laptop bag (plus the sling and the duffel bag….). The backpack is well made. The big selling point for me is its leather but still light. In a tropical downpour the contents stay dry, but unlike most leather backpacks it’s nice and light. (Ex army and learned the lesson to keep backpacks as light as you can). The leather does scratch, eg pushing under an aircraft seat. I like it.

  It’s a bit of a dice roll for me. I bought a samsonite two piece and the handle was stuck extended on the large one. It’s not fun hauling luggage around another country with a busted handle or wheel. The carry on size has been fantastic. These days I’ll pay if it reduces the chances of that happening again.

  I have a carry on from the brand away and it’s been good. That bag has been on around 200 separate legs in the past 4 years. I travel quite a bit domestically for work. Not one issue. My buddy had an issue with his, brought it to the store and he walked out with a brand new one. They may not be the “best” but they’re good enough and the warranty is nice. If you plan on international travel, I recommend getting a cheap basic suitcase for a checked bag. Samsonite and the like is what I mean. You don’t need to be carrying around a fancy suitcase abroad. People know a Briggs Riley suitcase is expensive and what’s inside is likely filled with expensive goodies too… A basic beat up suitcase isn’t going to attract the same attention.

  $2k from a Chinese company that's new. Doubt it will be around or take care of anything in even 10 years from now... Seems like you had a good run with your Tumi, why not stick with what is known to be solid? I love my $60 Ross Samsonite, 10 years around the states and Europe, and going strong.

  Leather bag for work (i want Samsonite Classic Leather Backpack)

  I have this actual bag I think. I like it, but I mostly use it for the office when I go in. It fits everything I need in to it for those day. I would struggle to fit a bunch of stuff in it if I wanted to use it to go away for a night or two as it’s a little rigid in its storage set up. Seems designed for office use. Do I regret buying it? No, not at all. Good quality, nice finish, and looks good too.

  Jansport or Samsonite will last for ages. I’ve had a Jansport since 2008 that’s still going strong. I use it when I travel and it’s never failed me. I just bought a Samsonite for daily use earlier this year and I absolutely love it. Great organisation, comfortable to wear when it’s heavy, and it can hold a lot of stuff without getting huge.

  Stuck on luggage choices

  I’ve had my Samsonite for 15 years, which went through regular world travels, from the humid heat of Singapore, the gravel of Patagonia, Lisbon’s cobblestone, Dubai’s sand, London’s mud, and the list goes on and on. Other than the wheels being by now quite eroded, it still looks like a new one and I expect keeping it for another 10 years at least.

  Looking for a recommendation for a leather attache.

  For a true hard-sided attaché that will actually last, prioritize Swaine (formerly Swaine Adeney), Aspinal’s Classic Attaché, and vintage Zero Halliburton over Maxwell Scott. If you want leather, Swaine’s bridle attaché with Amiet locks and a full piano hinge is the gold standard, and they’ll service it; it’s pricey but you buy it once.   Check out Saddleback Leather or Korchmar. Both make legit attachés that'll outlast you. If you want vintage vibes honestly just hit eBay for old Samsonite or Hartmann those things are tanks and way cheaper than new stuff that's half as good.

  Is this your main cabin bag or for day trips/sightseeing? While I’m a fan of Samsonite for my suitcase (their warranty delivers!), I think I would shy away from this look for daily use. I like a good beat up school bag from a company like Jansport, Eastpak, LL Bean, or Crate and Barrel that looks like it might just be holding diapers paired with a close-fitting sling/belt bag for the important stuff.

  Yeah, this is why I'm surprised when I read about Samsonite being shit now, in some other posts. Similar - I grew up with them ("third culture kid" - more long-haul flights than I can count before I was 10 years old). Those went everywhere with us... more flights than I could possibly count. They were scuffed to shit, but maintained 100% integrity in terms of the structure. The hard cases were truly hard cases, not something that just wasn't soft but could be compressed and damaged by tossing it.

  I need recommendations for luggage that lasts.

  Late to the party, but what you want is not a particular bag, but a particular design--3-point latches (not zippers), a piano hinge, and a gasket between the shells. The two that we own are the Samsonite S'Cure and the American Tourister Tribus and they've been over a dozen international trips each. These design elements were pioneered on the Samsonite Oyster, which even at 40 years old is being sold on ebay because they're so durable. The original designed didn't have 4 wheels or a tsa lock so they're not in favor today, but they are still indestructable. The make models of the bags that have this design vary, but every few years Samsonite and/or American Tourister has them available in certain countries or the US. The current version I found quickly is the Samsonite Essens.

  Samsonite or TravelPro Suitcase

  Can you get the Maxlite Pro with the two wheels instead of 4? I had two suitcases with the single spinner wheels (not Travel Pro, but Swiss Gear) and they gave out long before the suitcase did (and I ended up donating them). The smaller carryon handled a bit better with the single spinner wheels, but the larger one was a beast. I cant vouch for the Samsonite bags that you linked because I am in the USA but I have had great luck with that brand. I had two soft side checked size bags for probably 15 years and I used them on a regular basis until they finally gave out. It was probably the wheels or the handles that gave out first. I bought them in the late 90s and used them until around 2014. I have had a hardside carryon for the last three years and it has been great. It is a really well built bag. My husband actually uses it more than I do. I don’t have a Maxpro bag but I do have a hard side Travel Pro checked suitcase that I really like and it is well made. I have had that one just about 3 years as well.

The tech space in them takes up less space than in a hard side suitcase. Also maybe it is just me but while I thought I would like the hardside bag with the laptop pocket I decided it was easier if I just kept that in my personal item bag. I also have a carryon suitcase from Beis, and I like it a lot. They make a smaller international size suitcase now so I would look at that. I really like my Beis carryon on and I have zero complaints. The wheels are nice, the handle is padded, I rarely have to use the extension panel. I have a large hardside suitcase from Away and I am super happy with that case as well. I had to replace a handle and they sent me one quickly and haven’t had a problem since. Their carryon suitcases get a lot of love. Quince also makes a duplicate of the carryon for about $150. I have heard good things about Monos as well but I don’t own one.

  ThisTumi bag was stupid expensive but it's seen a dozen countries and been kicking ass for 11 years.

  i've got a samsonite trunk&co backpack from 2001 that survives till this day with nothing more than some fraying on the edges and the zipper handles breaking off so i replaced them with some solid core electric wire :D Sadly, noone makes these kind of bags any more, though mine was nowhere near 600 bucks, more like 50....

  BIFL luggage: Fabric over hard plastic?

  Any decent brand with hard shell will give you enough water resistance for most trips. I’m currently using Samsonite, but this sub recommends Briggs and Riley pretty frequently and I may look at that for future needs. I will say, though, that you should look at the construction for each individual model—it seems like most brands have at least a couple cheaply made lines these days. You want solid construction around the wheels, studs, and handles, and very limited fabric around solid zippers. For a leather duffle, I carry a Kodiak Yukon 60L on most trips (and just don’t fill it when I don’t need to). I could probably make do with the 45L the vast majority of the time, though.

I have a 2pc set Of samsonite I got for less than US$200 The airlines will beat the crap out of your luggage so your best bet is to think about the wheels and construction and see if you can get a better deal on some kind of Samsonite if not go for the heavier duty one make sure it isn't too big for your needs

  Will this fit most major international airlines as a carry-on? My family won't let me get a brand that isn't Samsonite and I think this is the lightest weight option for me

  As a professional traveler (200+ nights a year), I back Samsonite as a moderate quality product with a decent warranty. But don't buy this type of soft luggage. After a few uses, the fabric loses its shape and starts to drop and drag. It will also pick up rain or liquids and dirt and is difficult to clean And your contents become soiled. I'm not a huge fan of soft luggage in general like the other comment says you can cram more in than a firm case, but I watch people fight to fit it in the overhead on a weekly basis. My first suitcase was the Samsonite outline pro global. It lasted 8 years before a wheel blew and they replaced it, no questions asked, it just took 2 weeks for the warranty to process. It does expand by an additional 2 in when needed. I recommend spinners, they're much easier to push down a narrow aisle and navigate airports. The Theorym Global Carry on spinner looks like a great alternative. If you go with soft luggage buy a can of Scotchgard and give it two or three coats.

  Pretty sure travel pro is the brand pilots and flight attendants use for travel bc of how durable they are / good the warrenty is. Personally I buy Samsonite, def not BIFL but the one I got from marshals 9 years ago is going strong, might have to replace the wheels soon but that’s not bad

  I finally bought a Samsonite 2 years ago after having every suitcase die somehow in a year. I travel a lot for work. The Samsonite still looks new, 2 years later. May not be as high end as some others but I'm happy.

  If you want something affordable that will last decades then Samsonite is a great choice. I’ve had my Samsonite luggage set going on a decade now and it has survived a few international trips, and more domestic trips than I can count, both in the air and on the road. I fly probably 3-6 times a year for work and do cross country road trips 1-4 times a year. It’s still going very strong. No issues with the wheels, zippers, or handles. Some scuffs from the flights but that’s to be expected. I don’t foresee having to replace any of it for a long time. You can find Samsonite sets at places like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx, too, if you’re in the US, and save a shit ton of money that way. Don’t believe the people telling you that you have to spend $400 on a carry on size to get quality that lasts.

  Samsonite. The guarantee is really helping. After 10 years of traveling with my hard shell lightweight Samsonite, one hinge got broken by the airline. Surprisingly at the complaints counter there were other travellers from the same flight with broken suitcases. That maybe says how frequently suitcases get broken... Anyway, the company didn't want to hear my complaint, so I turned to Samsonite. Until this point I thought that this would be another bullshit guarantee not covering any actual damage. But noooo, the website offered me either to send the replacement part or go have it fixed at a shop. So I had it delivered at my place entirely for free, and fixed the suitcase in a few minutes. And now it's back to business... Amazing. Conclusion: suitcases will break at some point if they are handled by the wrong company. But the guarantee makes a difference, and you pay for it in the price. I have another small Samsonite for cabin, made of fabric. It's also doing great. And it doesn't rot (yes literally rot) like cheap Chinese brands I had in the past. Another comment... My only complaint about the hard clamshell design is that it takes more space when opened and it's sometimes not easy to find this space in hotel rooms, probably particularly in Japan... Just sayin...
