What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
SAS ankle boots. From the store that used to only sell old-people shoes. The moment I put these boots on, they were comfortable. Some days I forget I have them on. I took them last year to Mexico along with my hiking boots. Didn't wear the hiking boots even once. https://sasnola.com/products/jade-chestnut?

Prolonging the life of shoe soles
I've used SAS for banquet catering, fast food, and restaurant work. I liked them so much that I bought the other styles just for walking. Hope you find what you need.

Prolonging the life of shoe soles
My feet would hate me using sandals that long. SAS shoes are designed for long-term on your feet. The soles are thick, supportive, and help you feel like you are on air. The shoes are made of real leather, so you could potentially still resole them.

What brand of shoes that lasts?
I've had white Adidas sneakers for years now. I agree with all the comments about rotating though! Another trick to get more life out of shoe is to replace the laces and the inserts. You can get memory foam ones on Amazon for like $10! As for other quality shoe brands, I love my Tao sandals and leather sneakers (they are only made for women though, which is interesting), SAS, Sorel, and Naot. All of them are on the pricier side, but they are worth it for the comfort and craftsmanship! My most recent work shoes are Under Armour from their outlet, and they've actually held up incredibly well for the last year or so (I'm a nurse, so they get a lot of wear!) If you are looking for shoes made in the US d/t the cost of tariffs right now, Pikilinos are made here.

PSA: avoid buying Ecco shoes.
Ecco soles detiorate .UNLIKE. ANY other shoes I've ever owned. Ecco has known about this over a decade yet has never cared enough to correct and fix their problem. I no longer buy the inferior Ecco brand. I buy Taos and SAS all of which have lasted well and ARE quality. Shame on Ecco for continuing to make crap and rip off consumers.

Going to Europe, suggestions for comfortable, not-ugly walking shoes that will last?
Sanita or Dansko clogs. Also, SAS makes shoes in many different styles. Their Duo sandals are very comfy.

I love these. https://www.zappos.com/p/womens-sas-bliss-slip-on-comfort-wedge-black/product/8867492/color/3 Not terribly ugly but comfortable from day one.

Best simple, not overly-engineered shoe for walking 12k steps/day?
I love my SAS shoes! I had bad feet 2 decades ago and learned about good footware. Currently my obsession is SAS shoes as they are really well made and their customer service is great.

Looking for good dress shoe with removable insoles and repairable sole
Thank you. I see that there is an SAS near me and I will go look. They do have a Venetian, too.

Looking for good dress shoe with removable insoles and repairable sole
Depending on the size of your insole you may be able to fit it in some shoes without removable insoles if you size up half a size. Allen Edmonds can be a good place to start since they offer a range of widths and have a lot of physical stores where you could go to try on shoes without removable insoles your insole. Another possibility is having a custom dress shoe orthotic made. I also use custom orthotics in many shoes and have one pair that is rigid and very thin that I use with dress shoes/boots that don’t have removable insoles. Also, many dress shoes (especially slip ons) only have a sock liner (insole) at the heel that is glued down and could be torn out if necessary. For Venetian loafers, you could also take a look at some of the Maine moccasin makers like Quoddy and Rancourt. For expensive but well made lace up shoes, you could check out some of the removable insoles your insole options from Alden shoes. There should be some shown on the official Alsennstore site and at Moulded Shoe. Finally, I’ve seen a lot of posts raving about the comfort of San Antonio Shoes (SAS) but I’ve never tried them as I don’t like the look. And if you want to go down the shoe rabbit hole check out r/goodyearwelt. I hope this helps!
