  Respectfully, nobody that you know. Plenty of older folks in New England are. When I worked in a gear shop, I sold plenty of old school Lowa, Meindl, Scarpa, etc. Again, I agree with you that comfort is more important. I go through 2-3 Lone Peaks a year. But it depends on what OP is looking for.

  shoe recommendations ‼️‼️

  You need to get a footbed insert, look at Superfeet, to replace the standard insole in any shoe you buy. Try and size them by your heel size - there should be guides online. I think hiking/trail shoes are a good option as they typically have higher density foam and are more durable than typical lightweight running shoes etc. New Balance have a good selection of wide options, or look into brands like Meindl, Scarpa, La Sportiva for really high quality.

  What product would you seriously stockpile if you found out they weren't going to sell it anymore?

  I did stockpile Scarpa Zen Pro approach shoes when they discontinued them, as someone who walks 2500+ miles a year losing "the shoe" is rough.

  I love my Scarpa Terra’s - I’ll upgrade to the higher spec line when these give up the ghost. Do NOT wear them on concrete/asphalt if you want the soles to last. They are sticky Vibram rubber made for dirt, and will wear prematurely on the road, so just don’t do your daily 2-4 miles of walking in them unless it is on a trail. They will feel fine, just wear more quickly.

  I bought a pair of Scarpa SL-M3 boots in 2010 for a trip to hike the W trail in Torres del Paine, and they only get used very occasionally. Still in great shape, still keep me dry as a bone, and other than some minor scrapes on the leather and the aglets coming off the laces, they’re still in excellent shape. I’ll probably still own them when I retire.

  That sucks to hear, as they were one of the best. Scarpa and Lowa are two other great brands of hiking boots. I'd also check out Oboz - I've been very happy with mine.

  Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)

  Rather than looking at running shoes, try looking at hiking/trail running shows- these will typically have a higher density/sturdier sole because they are designed to move over rough terrain for long distances. This will significantly increase the longevity of the shoe compared to running shoes which typically have lighter, lower density soles and are really not suited to prolonged use by heavier individuals. These hiling/trail running shoes will also typically have wider options available, some brands to look out for; Garmont, Scarpa, New Balance, La Sportiva, Merrell, Danner, Salomon. Avoid On Cloud like the fucking plague, they are terrible shoes. Also, combine the shoes with a good foot bed, like Superfeet, which will offer much better support and help regulate posture and foot alignment, increasing overall comfort and longevity of the shoe.

  Experts in niche specialties- Are there any products you feel strongly about, for or against?

  Fair enough, in the past their products haven’t been the highest quality. My recent sharks have been harder and longer wearing than scarpas I’ve owned. I haven’t put a ton of use into their draws, but they feel nice to use, are smooth, and are rated/certified. I have a handful of friends with their newer crash pads too, and they are equal to any other pad we have out at the crag.

  Brands you swear by that have Buy It For Life quality products

  Scarpa shoes/boots (as much as something like this in regular use can be BFL) Crux approach shoes - outlasted 3 pairs of laces. Regular use, 5 years plus Mæstrale ski boots - 1st version, still going strong. Great light comfortable ski touring boot. Gonna last decades. Zodiac approach shoes - very robust, perhaps too stiff. Had them a couple of years now, not a mark on them. Also gonna last for years. Manta tech GTX mountain boots - the new version of the classic mountaineering boot. Not had these long, but they also feel solid. The one thing that may be a limiting factor for very long life in modern boots/shoes, is the high density foam sandwiched in the sole. I had a pair of Meindl mountain boots that were otherwise in fantastic condition, except that the foam in the sole completely disintegrated at about 20 years of age. They could have lasted another 20 years except for this foam layer. Seems that it's not practical to fix this type of sole.

  Saucony, Brooks, Mizuno, Mammut, Innov8, Salewa, Scarpa, Sportiva, Lowa. All of those have a particular reputation for longevity and general quality. Bear in mind it may depend on the particular purpose, for instance more specialist/high performance models of those brands may be comparatively short lived, i.e. shoes that are intended to help you win a race at all costs. :)  But in truth the BIFL answer is to buy cheap when sales come around. Combine with the above, there's your answer. Shoes don't live forever, it's about making your money go further.

  I have had a pair of Scarpa mojito for ages. Keen are pretty indestructible too, I have the sandals boots and I wore the he’ll out of Jaspers. I am really hard on shoes.

  I'm currently super happy with my Vivo Tracker Forest ESC, it is barefoot style, so it depends. For standard style boots, the best I've had were Scarpa, search for the Made in Italy, resolable models.

  A list of BIFL not made in the USA

  I'm following this. For headphones/audio stuff, one of the few categories where tech is BIFL, Sennheiser, Germany is not only BIFL but also way better sound than the alternatives! Meze, Romania are also built like pieces of art and their new models sound like a dream! and Beyerdynamics, Germany are the choice for indestructibility for a reason. For tools, PB Swiss and Knippex, Germany, dominate for a reason. For knives, Victorinox, Switzerland and Opinel, France are not only top notch but also super affordable, and plenty of small French manufacturers if you want something fancier. For clothes, Fjallraven, Sweden deserves the reputation it has, and I'm very happy with my stuff from Seagale, France. If price is an issue, do not understimate the higher end of the Decathlon, France catalogue, it may not be as fancy as the alternatives, but durability is not compromised! For shoes, Carmina in Spain deserves a shootout. Same as Scarpa from Italy for more practical shoes. I know tech is not BIFL but Fairphone, Netherlands makes a repairable phone, and Nokia/HMD, Finland has done some nice repairability upgrades too. Tuxedo, Germany and Slimbook, Spain also sell computers based mostly on Clevo, Taiwan designs that tend to be more repairable and upgradeable than the alternatives.
