  Around your budget - Bean boots. Specifically the thinsulate version. More importantly is layers. You need a polypropylene base sock, then a wool sock. Also circulation is key. If you can stretch your budget, Hoffman or Schnee’s pac boot.

  Alternates to LL Bean duck boots?

  [Schnee's](http://www.schnees.com/category/Schnees-Pac-Boots) are very similar and look well-built. They're made in Montana, but they're also more expensive than L.L. Bean, if that matters. The soles look like they would have better traction though.
