Help with Leather Jacket Economics?
Hard disagree on the thickness thing - my Schott 618 is like 1.2mm and it's been bulletproof for 6 years now. The quality of the leather matters way more than just raw thickness Those Buffalo Jackson jackets look decent but yeah the elastic parts on the bomber will definitely go first, probably around year 4-5. The flight jacket would be the safer bet if you want true BIFL

These Schott NYC Leather jackets are over 20 years old. They average between 600 to 800 dollars. They have wool inside the pockets and the short collar one has fur inside. Ive havent seen many leather jackets hild up as well as Schott. I do not work for Schott.
It took ten years becoming attached to Schott by reputation, then a month of intense research to buy the new Schott #464 brown bison leather, what a beauty. Weighs just over 7 pounds. Has a low luster oil tan over chrome tan, not shiny. Though not moto style, it is Perfecto. Best looking jacket on the market, it will never look like those urine cured, stretched and wrinkled lambskin p.o.s. from Pakistan/Morocco that are $150-300 +/-. Tip: look at your potential jacket purchase on Ebay/Etsy when it's been used. Does it resemble withered road kill hanging like a dead wrinkled curtain (or albatross) in the photos? In 2025 USDs, one needs to spend $900+ to get a thick, excellent leather jacket that will see your lifetime plus your son's.

Women’s long wool coat
Schott has nice 30inch long 24oz slim peacoat [here](https://www.schottnyc.com/products/womens-wool-peacoat.htm). $498 Macys has a few brands like London Fog, which have good long coats. Quince has some good coats too. Other than that, Artizia also has some good coats.

Check Schott's catalog first since that's the actual brand. Search collarless suede jacket on Grailed/eBay for vintage stuff. Golden Bear and Aero Leather might have similar styles too.

Wool coat for the Northeast
Really? Is LL Bean still any good? I thought they'd been ruined by private equity. Everything I've ever bought from them has been crap. I'm not sure I'd trust them to make a durable winter coat. Schott products are durable and awesome though.

Wool coat for the Northeast
You need to examine what kind of coat you want for the temperatures. It gets really where you are so there are a few styles that can work well: 1. Technical jackets with down insulation - Think canada goose, Fjallraven, Patagonia, and Rudsak. These jackets can last a long time if you buy their higher end jackets. Over time you might find wear in the seams and you can bring it to a good tailor for repair. My gf has had hers for 15 years and its still going, I see small wear and will bring it to a tailor sooner or later. 2. Wool jackets - Wool is a classic coat but will not be as insulating as your down choices. There are many styles of these coats that range from a peacoat to Filson style Cruiser jackets - Schott, Filson, Stormy Kromer, Weatherwool. These jackets last a long time and keep you fairly warm and theyll hold up just as well as the technical jacket but theyre a different style. layering is a must with these jackets IMO when its brick outside. 3. Shearling style jackets - These jackets offer a similar warmth to the wool jacket and relies on wool and leather. Certainly a different style for the Northwest but itll keep you very warm. Being leather, its the most expensive choice if you go with genuine sherling instead of polyester and cotton. N-1 Deck are a style of sherling jackets are very warm and you can find them from Buzz Rickson, The Real McCoys, Iron Heart. Schott also sells different styles of shearling jackets that you should look at Golden Bear is another company that does Shearling. All of these jackets can last a long time with enough care, the technical jackets needing the lesat amount of care to the wool and then finally the shearling which requires the most care. I think you have good choices and when it comes down to it, its about price and style. Used models of all the above are found on marketplace to ebay to grailed/depop/vinted.

Wool coat for the Northeast
Mine’s a vintage Schott and has held up ridiculously well. You’ll want to layer with a sweater when it’s brutally cold, but it’s been worth every penny. Have you checked out any army surplus stores? Sometimes they have legit wool coats that’ll outlast all of us.

Why are good leather jackets either $100 or $1,500? What's the real difference?
Absolutely, thrifting is the best deal. If OP comes across a particular jacket design they love, hit up eBay and pay a lot less than a comparable new jacket. For example, new Schott leather jackets will run $1000+, but a vintage one will be 1/4 the price.

Why are good leather jackets either $100 or $1,500? What's the real difference?
Everything. Leather type, quality, refined design, quality hardware, stitching, cut, service etc. I splurged on a Schott Perfecto years ago and definitely know where my money went.

Why are good leather jackets either $100 or $1,500? What's the real difference?
Just sharing my experience, I bought a vintage (late 70’s) Schott leather motorcycle jacket on Ebay for $150. It had a broken zipper, a torn liner and some minor wear, but the leather was still supple and in great shape. I took it to a leather worker and had it completely repaired and conditioned, which cost another $150, so all in I spent $300. [This one is nearly identical](https://www.schottnyc.com/products/cafe-leather-jacket.htm) so you can see I saved quite a bit of money, and I actually like my worn in vintage jacket better than new. It was something I’d dreamed of owning for years but could never justify the price, I’ve owned several cheaper leather jackets and none of them even come close to the quality, look or feel of this one. [Here’s mine in action](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0CR_SzA2zE/?igsh=MWdhMWZwbGt2OWM4Yg==). It’s one of my most prized possessions, truly an heirloom item.

Why are good leather jackets either $100 or $1,500? What's the real difference?
It is impossible to get a good quality leather jacket for under $500 new. Even around 500 I would be very suspicious. Also, never buy a leather jacket from a fashion brand (ASOS, Banana Republic, Zara, etc). Their leather is always paper thin and usually not actually leather (I wouldn’t consider “genuine leather” to be real leather). Your best bet if you want to spend under $500 I’d look for used/vintage from brands like Schott, Aero Leathers, Vanson, or something similar. Make sure it specifies the leather type (cowhide, goat, horsehide, etc.). Also, avoid Wilson leather jackets, they were the first mass-market leather jacket brand in the US and are low quality.

Why are good leather jackets either $100 or $1,500? What's the real difference?
$99 “leather” jackets are going to be bonded leather most likely which is just leather scraps glued and sanded together. The overall stitching will be poorer and the pattern won’t be as good. For $1200, you could get a nice high quality leather jacket that uses full grain leather, quality hardware and stitching and good patterns. If youree on a budget I would look at vanson or used Schott

Thinking of buying Lamarque Leather Jacket
Quality leather struggle is real. My jacket from AliExpress uses full grain cowhide, 2 years of daily commutes and the patina's better than my old Schott. Code LKA25 took 25 off when I bundled with leather conditioner to hit 125.

Leather jacket that will last decades?
That’s awesome your dad’s jacket lasted that long, that’s exactly what good leather can do. If you want something that will last decades, look for full-grain or top-grain leather, since those are the most durable. Steer clear of “genuine leather” if you can , it’s usually lower quality and won’t hold up the same way. For brands, you can check out Schott, Vanson, Aero Leathers, or Lewis Leathers if you want heritage-level quality. If you’re looking for something more affordable but still solid, smaller makers like ZippiLeather do custom jackets using high-quality hides, so you can get a great fit and construction without paying big heritage-brand prices. The key is proper care , condition it every so often, keep it dry when possible, and it’ll easily become your own 20-year jacket.

Thinking through induction stove and longevity
Competent induction units will feature a Schott ceramic composite top, not plain glass. They're pretty durable as long as you're not skating cast iron across it all the time. I've had my induction unit for seven years at this point and it's got a couple tiny scratches you can only see if you're really looking for them.

What are your favorite niche BIFL items that are currently available?
Thermarest sleeping pads- Made in the USA and absolutely bombproof. My buddy has had his since the 90's and it still holds air perfectly well. Schott navy pea coats- I've had mine since I was 16 and still wear it. Super thick and timeless looking. I'll pass it down to my son someday. Kennedy tool chests- Still have my grandfather's machinist tool boxes and they're over 60 years old and the drawers are oh so smooth. They still sell the same ones today and the design hasn't changed one bit.

What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?
Schott Perfecto leather jacket This thing could stop a fucking bullet. I call it “pre-vintage” because I bought it brand new but it’ll get passed on to my grandkids. They have other models too but the Perfecto is *the* biker jacket, worn by The Ramones, James Dean, Marlon Brando etc. Also a pair of PNW leather boots, White’s, Nick’s, Wesco’s Frank’s, etc. These are handmade for loggers and woodland firefighter and have been around for generations, they will last forever if you take care of them. /r/pnwbootmakers

BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.
I buy higher-end clothing secondhand, usually on eBay. People outgrow nicer stuff or lose their taste for it but usually take better care of it, so you're more likely to get a like-new item with nicer garments. I found a $500 Schott peacoat for $90, and a Barbour jacket for $75.

[Request] Leather Jacket for Winter
I own a Legendary Black Stallion jacket which is made by Schott for LegendaryUSA.com. Amazing jacket for riding during the winter season, rode 80 miles round trip to work yesterday at highway speeds 65-80mph in 25 degree weather. Wouldn't ever attempt that trip without my Stallion. That said, if you're not a motorcycle rider, I'd strongly advise against leather for the winter. I wear one because wool on a bike is too porous and the wind seeps thru at highway speeds. Leather blocks that wind which is nice, but leather itself also gets very cold. If you touch your jacket after a cold ride you'll see what I mean, it also stays cold for a long time after. While the insulation inside the jacket will combat this, you'd be FAR better off with one of Schott's Wool Pea Coats (model 740N) which I also have. I'm a big schott fan haha. I can say for certain being the owner of a Schott Leather and a Schott Wool jacket that the wool is SIGNIFICANTLY warmer for day to day activities. If you're set on leather though, the Schott 141 is your best bet. While many of their jackets have a quilted liner, the 141 has a thick faux fur zip out liner which is far warmer than the quilted versions. Plus it zips out so you can use the jacket in the summer. Very functional jacket. [link here] (http://www.legendaryusa.com/Schott-NYC-141-Cafe-Racer-Naked-Leather-Motorcycle-Jacket_p_14.html)

[Request] Leather Jacket for Winter
Leather in general lasts well and takes the edge off winter; with a wool sweater and normal thickness/lining you're good to about -10F, at least in the parts that are covered by the jacket. What's going to fail in my experience is the non-leather parts- lining, pockets, etc. I've never gone more than about ten years on a leather jacket, though. My unsupported feeling is that Schott's is higher quality than Wilson's . On the other hand I got some cheap-ass badly made lightweight leather jacket off the street and it lasted me twelve years, so Wilson's might be good enough. (It was a good spring/fall/cold summer night jacket, and it rolled up so small you could hold it in one hand, stuff it in a backpack, etc.)
