What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
I haven't had a puncture in over 10 years since I upgraded my bicycle tires to Schwalbe Marathon Plus. I have a few different Schwalbe brand ones, and I've never had a single puncture. I toured all over France and Spain, thousands of kilometres without a single flat.

Why are bikes so unreliable?
I don’t cary anything on my rides. Get the right parts and change them well in advance of anticipated failure. Just like with a car. I switched to Schwalbe Marathons 20 years ago and have never had another flat.

Has everything we buy reduced in quality over time? Has anything increased in quality or stayed high quality and durable?
Bicycle tires too! A bicycle used to have a flat ever 500 km in 1990. I haven't had a flat tire in four years. It must be every 3000 km now. Both are the Schwalbe basic model.
