I have a choice to either buy a stationary bike or a treadmill that I want to use for the next 6-7 years. Which one should I get?
Bike all the way. Easier on the joints, great cardio, and way less impact than a treadmill. Quads won’t blow up unless you’re doing crazy resistance, just keep it moderate. I use a Schwinn IC4 and it’s solid 👌👌

If you’re just starting.. buy used. So many people want to work out at home and just can’t stick to it, or were gifted it. We have a nice Nordic track treadmill that has seen lots of use (got it with the purchase of the home lol along with a rower) and I have a recumbent bike top of the line schwinn… got it for like 75. It’s an older year but sees use daily and works like a charm. Prior owner used it quite a bit too per the mileage meter.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
They've always had department store quality crap, but they used to have decent to high end bikes as well. Schwinn Paramounts are still pretty prized among the vintage crowd. But I'm the 90s they got bought out by one of the conglomerates. I forget which. Pacific, I think. Might've been sold a few times since then. They've been solidly Wal-Mart trash ever since.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
I think there's a lot of nostalgia clouding judgement, but the top end stuff (e.g. Schwinn Paramount) was quality stuff. Of course even the old stuff is better than what they are now, just another bicycle shaped object in a department store.

Why are bikes so unreliable?
I have two bicycles, one is a 1973 schwinn road bike and the other is a 1999 Trek mountain bike. While not daily uses, they both see around 1000mi per year. The only things I've had to replace on both are the same things I've replaced on my car due to regular use; tires, brake pads and chains (belts for the car equivalent). Bikes however scale quality with price. A 250.00 bike is very different than an 1000.00 bike. They ARE absolutely BIFL if you dont get a Walmart special.
