The most reliable ice maker brand?
I think that there are two big differences in ice.... The ice made in your freezer is much colder and doesn't melt away like an under counter ice maker will. Any under counter ice maker will need to have drainage (either gravity or a pump... Which is another point of failure). I've owned an extremely expensive Scott nugget under counter ice maker... The ice was great. My young kids also loved to hide things in the ice, which would contaminate the ice and require cleaning... Which usually took me about 1.5 hrs to get rid of all of the mold at the bottom. Eventually it stopped working, and I got a quote for 2500 to replace a part that "should" fix it.... Just buying the part online would have cost me 1200 and I wasn't confident that I could do it myself. I bought a cheaper ice maker that makes crappier ice, but it is much easier to clean... No issues so far after about a year. Only issue I've had with the small ice maker in my freezer was when someone left the door open too long and the water line froze and I had to thaw it with a hair dryer (and it started working again right away).

Any countertop ice maker that doesn’t turn moldy or break after a year?
HVACR tech that specializes in ice machines here. True makes excellent refrigeration products. they’re the only brand i recommend to my commercial clients for refrigeration. Manitowoc and Scotsman are both great under-counter options as well.

Another vote for undercounter. On my second machine (bought first one second-hand 7 years ago). Just got new Scotsman SCN60 and it is an amazing machine. No appliance will ever be BIFL. These machines require 1. A very clean water source (thing softened/RO), 2. Regular descaling to remove mineral build up, 3. Regular sanitation to clean and prevent mold buildup.
