Even in my little backwoods area of MN, I was able to go the a nearby city and there was a vacuum store, so we were able to go in and try out and look at what we wanted. Plus we get an annual service for 12 years, free monthly shampoo rentals, a ton of free attachments. I almost ordered online, but so glad I didn't. We went with a Sebo, we have 5 Saint Bernards who all live in the house. Couldn't recommend it more. I think the bagged is critical.

I would have recommended a central vacuum if you have large pets. Especially a German Shepherd. That way the odor is out in the garage or basement vs in your home. And there's all sorts of attachments you can choose from. If you can afford the hide a hose option, it's like using a cordless vacuum but with much better suction. Just out of curiosity, what was the model of the Sebo. And what type of carpet? If a central vacuum isn't possible, the Sebo D4 or Miele C3 Cat and Dog would be my suggestion for multi-floor use.

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
I'm almost positive that you were doing something wrong. Buying the wrong Sebo vacuum for your floor type is a common mistake. You're Shark likely died much sooner than you think. Sharks aren't fully sealed systems and they get worse over time. So it's likely that you were spreading dust all over your home for several years each time you used it. When you started using the Sebo it was actually doing its job. As for the smell, yes that is an issue. Debris in your bag does start to decompose while in there. Changing out the bag more often, especially when you have pets helps. As well as using some vacuum deodorizer beads so each time you start your vacuum you aren't smelling the odor coming from the bag.

Sometimes you can get lucky with Dyson. Its performance is not even remotely equivalent to a Sebo or Miele though. And no vacuum manufacturer compares to Sebo's warranty. You might be surprised at how much your Dyson is missing, especially if you have pets.

A quality vacuum that has a bag like a Miele, Sebo, or central vacuum. They last much longer than any crap you will buy from Dyson, LG, Samsung, Shark, Bissell, or Tineco. Miele and Sebo actually have a warranty and keep spare parts in stock so you are able to fix something if it breaks. You should think of a vacuum like any appliance. It should last at least a decade.

Robot vacuums are good as secondary vacuums, but you still need a good bagged vacuum for deep cleaning. Check out Sebo. They come with a 10 year warranty when you buy from an authorized dealer (not Amazon). They are running a 15% off sale until December 7th. GeekVacuums.com is running a promo on top of that. They’re giving additional discounts on certain models.

It is not that they last, it is moreso they are repairable. For example my Sebo E3 each year requires maybe a 20-30 maintenance for odd things. But each time I get it repaired I know even after warranty the stores who are authorized to do warranty work should still have solutions. So although my Sebo has a 10 year warranty, I’d imagine I’ll also be able to keep it hobbling along after 10 years because it is a familiar brand for shops to repair.

Nice - this set up does semi fix my main “fine dust sandblasting the bearings” complaint. In the case of the CX1 the airflow is basically: floor —- cyclones —- cartridge filter —-motor —— exhaust HEPA. That’s much closer to a bagged layout, just with a rigid pleated filter instead of a big soft bag. The “self-cleaning” is nice too, but it is mostly shaking dust off the surface. The really fine stuff still slowly blinds the cartridge, and because the surface area is tiny compared with a bag it clogs faster. You still need to clean or replace it occasionally or the motor will end up running hotter. So I’d put the CX1 in the “one of the few bagless that can compete with the bagged” bucket. If someone absolutely wants bagless and is happy to keep on top of filter maintenance, it is a decent shout. If they just want something that’ll last 10–20 years with normal-human laziness, I’d still point them to a bagged Miele or SEBO.

I have lots of new carpet and am amazed at what my Sebo E3 premium picks out of it. One thing I think people forget about with these vacuums, since I never see it mentioned - if you purchase in person (which you should for a Sebo as it increases the warranty) you can negotiate just like buying a car. I got a package of bags, the broom head and turbo head for me. One thing that people do not mention often about the Sebo is how quiet it is. It’s about 63 decibels in use at full blast. It can be even quieter on the lower suction settings.

It really comes down to three brands, but the big requirement is that they all use bags. Bagless units eventually kill themselves because fine dust bypasses the cyclones and grinds down the motor bearings. A bag acts as the primary filter to stop that happening. If you have carpets, the consensus splits between Miele and SEBO because they have powered electric brush heads to dig the dirt out. Miele is smoother to use, but SEBO is built like a tank and easier to repair yourself. If you mostly have hard floors, the Numatic Henry is arguably the most durable option. It’s basically just a commercial motor in a hard shell with no circuit boards to fail. It just lacks the powered beater bar for deep rugs.

Advice for first vacuum purchase in new apartment
Given you already understand that the stick vacs are pretty trash and are looking and corded bagged ones, you’re already over the major hurdle. I’d personally suggest the SEBO Felix. It’s upright so it doesn’t take up as much space and does an excellent job. I’d definitely say spend the bit extra and get the Felix over the Dart. I got a Dart thinking the savings would be worth the compromises but have ended up basically bought the parts from the Felix to turn it into one over time. Would’ve been cheaper to just get the nicer one in the first place. Especially the swivel head. Maneuvering it is a pain without that. Also notable that depending on your carpet, you may need the soft bristle brush for it. The regular one was too stiff and got stuck in my carpet with how hard the vacuum sucks it down. It’s definitely very repairable and does a fantastic job of cleaning. It also takes forever to fill the bag to the point it hurts the performance. It can get extremely full before any loss of suction.

Which vacuum should I go with for an apartment that’s mostly medium pile carpet?
Can't comment on specific models since pricing & models vary from place to place.. but corded & bagged are the priorities imo, and a spinning brush nozzle to help pick up hair from the carpet can help a lot - doesn't necessarily have to be the same brand/come with it, you can buy them separately - just make sure it's the correct size connection. Miele, Sebo & Henry are all good, solid choices. Bags act as another filter which helps prevent rubbish getting to the motor, so bagged machines *always* last longer than bagless. They're also more hygienic and easier to clean. Cordless vacuums don't have the same suction power as corded either, so they simply do not clean as well. Great for convenient spot cleaning in between using a corded vac, but not for whole house cleaning - unless your whole house is hard floors, I guess.

Adding: the Miele and Sebo have specialty stores that also service and repair them often times with parts on hand for little downtime. We’ve had our Miele for 12ish years and cord frayed, button wore out, wand electrical broke and…..that’s about it. Each time was about $100-150 in repairs but that thing sucks! In a good way.

Sebo makes very good canister vacuums. Used to have a shark then it randomly broke and they wanted like 150$ for an entire new head, then the motor died. Sebo has parts that can easily be replaced and repaired too. The filtration is also top notch between the air filters and the filtered bag

Best vacuum cleaner?
I had a cordless for many years when I lived in a small apartment, but once I moved into my current 3 story townhouse, it just couldn’t keep up. I finally upgraded to a Sebo and have been really happy with it. The folks here on r/BIFL convinced me to steer clear of Shark, and the vacuums sub basically sold me on going with a corded, bagged model for reliability. What really helped was the [big database pinned in that sub](https://www.reddit.com/user/lacking_foyer48/comments/1lj76h3/vacuum_cleaners_compared_comprehensive_datasheet/) \- you can sort by type, price, cord length, etc. Made narrowing it down way less overwhelming.

> Miele or Sebo bagged canister vacuum cleaner. Both are amazing, made in Germany. We had a couple of Swedish Electrolux cannisters. Google says those are made today in Hungary, where some of my Bosch power tools are also from, so I'd bet the quality is still there. For bagged upright, Oreck Commercial XL all day. Unlike modern consumer/prosumer vacuums, the Oreck Commercials don't try to be everything to everybody, with all kinds of heavy attachments. They're very lightweight and built durably to do the one task.

I moved into a new place last year and needed everything. Stainless steel pans, cast iron pan. Miele or Sebo canister vacuum I think I’ll go for a Leesa mattress for my next- check the Wirecutter lists and mattress sub Room & Board furniture was by far the most recommended for longevity. There is often couches secondhand on Facebook Marketplace if price is an issue. If you enjoy thrifting, getting secondhand decor, small kitchen items, etc can be really fulfilling. First of all, I’m really sorry you have to go through this! Depending on your budget, I recommend either a Miele or Sebo bagged canister vacuum cleaner. Both are amazing, made in Germany. For sofas, try to go for real leather. Avoid big name furniture chains and go with local stores… the big name ones try to pass off blend/combination products (where part of it is real leather and part is fake). Avoid nonstick pans like the plague. The *only* upside to those is short term convenience.

New Vacuum needed and suggestions?
Been doing some research on this lately and I'm coming down on two different - almost opposite - sides of the fence. Either like a miele or sebo bagged canister vacuum. Seriously, people rave about these things being absolute tanks and cleaning better than almost anything else. OR A stick vacuum from ryobi so i can use the batteries that already go with my tools and from what ive read the ones from tool companies are a bit more robust than their fan company counterparts... Not exactly BIFL but my thinking is the ecosystem could be bifl if they keep things standardised and whatnot.

I don’t think any of these stick vacs are BIFL. They’re plastic which can break, use rechargeable batteries which may or may not be able to be replaced at some point and don’t work that well for the price. Seems like a SEBO or a vintage Royal would be the real BIFL.

What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?
Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

Did you end up buying a vacuum? I’m currently getting ready for Prime Day and hoping to find a good deal on a Miele or Sebo vacuum. For anyone else shopping, check out this [reddit user’s work comparing all the vacuums](https://www.reddit.com/user/lacking_foyer48/comments/1lj76h3/vacuum_cleaners_compared_comprehensive_datasheet/). I’m hoping that by narrowing down the brands, I’ll find a good deal on sale day.

Ever Bought Something That Quietly Changed You?
A few things come to mind, all of them purchased or received as gifts decades ago and have been in regular if not daily use since: -Barbour waxed jackets and hat (I live in a climate where it’s wet Oct-at least May. I have them repaired and reproofed as needed, have replaced one barn jacket that was finally EOL after more than 20 years. Even in the nastiest sideways sleet, every part of me covered by Barbour is dry and comfortable. -Set of Calphalon anodized aluminum pots and pans (quality back in the day was different than today, brand has probably changed ownership multiple times since I received these from my parents as an apartment-warming gift). They heat evenly and clean up easily, total workhorses. Still my everyday go-to pots and pans. And I do mean every day - we eat almost all meals at home and I’m the primary cook. -Set of Henckels knives I bought at Costco as one of my first big adult kitchen tool splurges. I’ve kept them sharpened and have always hand washed them. When my brother in law, who is French and an accomplished home chef, visited recently and was helping us prep pizza toppings, he complimented us on the quality and sharpness of our knives. And he’s Definitely not the type of guy who tosses out compliments like candy at a parade, is very opinionated. -The absolute beast that is my SEBO upright vacuum (could probably strip wallpaper with it). -The circa 1920s shell edge Wedgwood china we use every day. It’s beautiful, looks delicate, but still goes in the dishwasher without an issue. Makes even the most basic omelet or tuna sandwich look kinda fancy. My mom bought the whole set (service for 12 with serving pieces!) at a garage sale for practically nothing. -The solid maple queen sized Mission style bed frame my parents bought for me when I moved into my first apartment. Today? Different mattress of course, but bed frame still going strong and practically unscathed, even after multiple long-distance moves.

As a four pet household a stick is for a quick clean and a bagged canister is the only thing I would recommend. Sebo and Miele make bagged canisters that are BIFL and pet worthy. Check out r/vacuumcleaners.

Shop vac are great for a shop but bad for a home. The vast majority don't have proper air sealing, they are huge and cumbersome, they can't properly clean any carpet. You'd be using the wrong tool for the job. The right tool is a sebo or Miele.

Yeah, we replaced the Dyson DC14 with a Sebo (the one at the top of this list, actually) because they were running a sale for their anniversary (the local sew/vac place, that is), they offered a trade-in even though they couldn't fix my old vacuum and my husband offered them cash in hand on the spot, so we got a pretty hefty discount on it (did not pay $1400 for sure). They also gave a 10 year warranty at their shop for free repairs on it. I wish my vacuum had made it to 20 years.. but it certainly did better (with only one belt repair) in the time we had it, which I guess is better than most people's experience.

Any Sebo Machine, or any of the Miele machines that have a power brush head would be a good bet. The Dyson machines are not at all bifl, they are cheaply built disposable vacuums, not recommended at all

That’s what I thought, too. Here’s my math on that: I spent $1k on my Sebo in March. I added up the cost of the 3 Dyson vacuums( I’ve had since 2017) and the parts I’ve had to replace = I should have bought a Sebo sooner. Models I’m literally placing on the curb tomorrow for whoever wants them. I’ve had it with Dyson’s cheap plastic crap: The upright Dyson (2021), V6 (2017) replaced with V11 (2022). All have had their brush heads replaced. 2 of the 3 are broken again. Not sure what’s wrong with the upright, again. We don’t even use them heavily, I have cleaners in once every 2 weeks. It’s absurd.

I couldn't afford a $1400 vacuum if I wanted one but Sebo is way more than 1% gains over a "normal" vacuum. They are also repairable which is a huge factor if BIFL - repair your expensive high quality item instead of buying and disposing X cheaper ones. Everyone has to draw their own line at where X is, before they can't justify the expense. But you did not, in your example, meet any BIFL.

We just payed close to $1k for a Sebo (that exact model, actually) earlier this year because it was "on sale" and our Dyson finally kicked the bucket (and Dyson stopped making replacement parts for it and no one here would work on the damn thing). So yes, yes they are that expensive. Normally, it retails for $1.3k in my area.

It comes down to wanting something that is built to last, easy to maintain and repair, and buying a brand that stands behind their product. When you buy a Sebo from an authorized dealer, it comes with a 10 year warranty. You can take it to any Sebo dealer and they’ll fix it for free. You don’t get that at a $150 price point. It’s not like 30 years ago when most products were BIFL. If you want something that lasts and has a good warranty, it costs more. If you don’t care if it lasts and you don’t mind replacing it often, spend $150. It’s that simple.

Miele appliances are definitely BIFL and their vacuums are high quality. But their warranty isn’t as good and they aren’t as easy to repair by the consumer. You can’t always get parts as models change more often. Instead of being a 10 year warranty across the board on all vacuums like Sebo, some Miele vacuums come with a 1 year, some a 2 year, 3 year, and their Home Care Line comes with a 5 year warranty. Miele’s feel more luxury to use, Sebo’s are more solid and built for commercial use. That’s where it comes down to personal preference.

I haven’t tried out the canisters since our C3 is fine. But I have a parrot and a younger kiddo who is still messy, so in the basement and play area downstairs I use an upright and tested the Sebo’s for that. The X4’s weren’t crazy heavy but I’m getting a Dart or Felix for the downstairs and those were really light/easy to handle (I think they’re ~15 & 17lbs respectively?).

I think one of your comments or posts on a vacuums sub is the reason I even know about them! After that I stalked a few old school repair forums and can’t find a bad word about them and decided when my Oreck bird vacuum (yes a separate house cleaner’s commercial model because my little raptor makes messes I couldn’t bring myself to vacuum with the nicer one…) dies I’m replacing the downstairs one with a Sebo! I just can’t with the canister all the time - so I appreciate your plugs on here otherwise I’d have likely spent more money on disposable options for an upright!

I have one, they’re relatively expensive the USA compared to Europe, but I think they’re still worth it based on the repairability alone. I went down a vacuum rabbit hole when my shitty $200 vacuum broke down and narrowed it down to Sebo and Miele. I’ve had mine for a bit, and it is definitely the first “real” vacuum I’ve owned and have been quite happy with it. Just keep in mind it does require a little maintenance every once in a while.

Sebo vacuums because they are built solid, and built to be repaired, not replaced. They also come with a 10 year warranty (when you buy from an authorized dealer). They never stop making parts so even if you’re outside the warranty, you can get the parts to fix them if needed.

Which Miele hoover is best for pets?
Miele is excellent (I own one). But if you have excessive hair. Buy a Sebo k3, e3 or d4 instead. The brushroll pops out in 2 seconds for easy cleaning. The Miele does not come out at all and you have to cut it with a knife/scissors.

Which Miele hoover is best for pets?
If you’re dealing with a lot of pet hair and rugs, the Miele Complete C3 Cat & Dog is usually the best choice because it comes with the Turbobrush and an active charcoal filter to reduce pet odors. However, since you couldn’t find that model on the website, let’s compare the ones you listed: Miele Complete C3 Starlight – This is a standard C3 model, likely without specialized pet tools. It may still be good for general cleaning but might not be the best for heavy pet hair. Miele Complete C3 Extra – This version often includes additional accessories, but check if it comes with the Turbobrush or Electrobrush for better pet hair pickup on carpets. Miele Complete C3 Flex – The “Flex” models usually emphasize maneuverability and flexibility in attachments, but again, the key is whether it includes the right brush head for pet hair. What to Look For: -Turbo-brush or Electrobrush – Essential for picking up pet hair from carpets and rugs. You can buy this separately but it will be a couple hundred dollars. -Active AirClean Filter – Helps with pet odors. -Bagged System – All Complete C3 models use bags, which are great for containing allergens and pet dander. Recommendation: -If any of these models include a Turbobrush or Electrobrush, go for that one. -If none come with it, you should be able to buy a Turbobrush separately—it makes a huge difference for pet owners. -If pet hair is a serious issue, consider a Miele with an Electrobrush (SEB 236 or SEB 228), but those usually come with models like the C3 Cat & Dog or C3 Powerline. Also, to be fair I wouldn’t get a Miele for pets with lots of carpet and rugs, I would go with a Sebo. But you it sounds like you are set on a Miele. Sorry my formatting is a mess. I’m on my phone.

Sebo Vacuums, I finally broke down and bought one. It’s so well engineered and easy to use. But what I like is it’s easy and cheap to maintain. It’s powerful and versatile. Lodge cast iron skillets Staub ceramic cookware Danner boots, I have the made in USA models that can be rebuilt. Stainless steel plates and cups from India. Only downside is you cannot microwave them but they are easy to clean and virtually indestructible.

I love my D4. I also love how Sebo gives you an exploded assembly diagram with part numbers and will sell them to you directly.

Love my D4. I had local stores with both the D4 and Miele C3 Complete and the D4 was the easy choice. SEBO E3 is the competitor to the Miele C3 for less $ and the D4 is just outright better for the same price as the C3. If you only have access to one or the other you'll be happy no matter what, but if you have the option the SEBO will be the better buy.

Surprised by lack of sebo on this list. I bought a sebo felix and it absolutely destroys my carpets (in a good way)

If you care about actually servicing your vacuum Sebo is easier to actually do things to than Miele. The ET-1 head is worth it alone but the ability to work BETTER with aftermarket bags, the serviceability, the quiet suction that's still high power, and this thing sucks on its sides great too. I bought my Turbo Sebo on Facebook for cheap & will be selling it only because it made me buy the cheap DR that popped up.

Sebo and Miele are BIFL. Dyson is not BIFL. If you buy a Sebo, the manual comes with an exploded parts diagram where you can buy each and every part. Dyson does not have this because when something breaks, they want you to buy a new vacuum. Same goes for Shark, Bissell and other bagless garbage that people keep recommending.

The Miele, Henry, and Sebo vacs are the only ones worth a damn on this list. If you want a real BIFL vac and are willing to shell out, get a Lindhaus.

I have the Sebo X4. I’ve had it for about 20 years maybe longer? It’s great.

Another vote to the Sebo Felix here. It's pretty comparable to the Dart from OP's list. It's powerful, lightweight, serviceable, relatively quiet, and has WAY better suction than my old Dyson.

Try the Sebos with the ET-1 head. The roller comes out super easily and is direct drive. My dog doesn’t she’d, but my wife and daughters do!

Recommendations on Cordless Vacuum
BIFL and cordless are mutually exclusive. Get a Miele or a Sebo.

After weeks of research I’ve finally settled on a vacuum
I bought this vacuum probably 8 months ago - really hard for me to get used to the design but man does it keep my house clean. I got it because we moved from a 900 sq foot house with only carpet in the bedrooms to a house triple the size with tons of carpet. My cordless Dyson would die 4-5 times before I could finish vacuuming the house. What sold me instead of a Miele was that the most commonly broken plastic parts on a Miele were metal on the Sebo. Anyways, I get why people don’t like the canister but once I got used to it I’ve been happy with my purchase.

For years I wanted a Miele. I started doing research and found that they changed to have a lot of parts made in China They also make many appliances. All SEBO parts are manufactured in Germany. They only manufacture vacuum cleaners. I bought a SEBO in October. *** I don't work in the industry or for SEBO. I'm open considering it if they are hiring ;) *** If I am going to pay German quality vacuum pricing, I want one made I Germany.( This is my philosophy on other items that are being outsourced as well.) ***

Im not talking about the stair or upholstery attachment but the ET-1 power brush roll. Are you using the ET-1 power head on your carpet? In my experience it is as good as anything else on the market
