Something you didn’t expect to be BIFL but outlasted your expectations?
I’m in my 30s I’ve had the same alarm clock since middle school, it was expensive my mom told me I better make it last. It’s a Sharp atomic alarm clock for those who are curious.

Best microwave that’ll last long??
Panasonic inverter microwaves are probably still the best option imo. Toshiba and sharp are good as well. Id go with an inverter microwave

Microwaves recommendations?
I had a Sharp Carousel for 20 years and used it every day, but replaced the mica card twice over the time I had it and always kept it clean. I don’t know if Sharp still produces such high quality microwaves, or how to find out, but I’ve always wanted to find another like that. I left it behind when I moved, to save on weight. I’ve heard you should replace them after several years anyway, but it didn’t have any issues except the mica card wearing out, and you can buy those for almost nothing from the manufacturer (or you could back then).

Low light, as annoying as possible, alarm clock
This $10 sharp alarm clock goes off like the old GE radio alarm clocks I dragged when I was a kid, and has not yet failed to get our 17 year old up and out of bed to walk across their room to shut it off. https://a.co/d/1q0eeH7

How are everyone’s OLED Televisions?
We have a Samsung oled panel we bought in 2017 and it’s still fine. The LG’s we’ve had haven’t lasted long. TCL is about 6 years old and fine but low quality. Best I ever had was a Sharp Aquos, bought in 2008 and sold to a neighbor in 2019. It’s still in his son’s room.

Actually good retro style countertop microwave? (Pic for reference)
Why not just get an actual period one? I have a Sharp and a GE from the ’90s and both are in regular use. The Sharp, I’ve been using for most of my microwave needs for the last 26 years. (The GE is my office microwave, it is as old, but isn’t used as much.)

Request - Refrigerator Recommendation
We've had a Sharp fridge that has so far lasted around 10 years, and I really hope it continues for a long time to come. The thing that makes me recommend it is the plasma ion technology. I was dubious initially, but not any more. It's not something I'd ever thought about before, but it's noticeably better at keeping food fresh than any other fridge I've owned, and by some margin. It must have payed for itself many times over in how much food we've saved that would have otherwise have spoiled.

Sharp Carousel II: It was given as a wedding present to my parents in 1988. I reheated my dinner in it tonight. BIFL? It's older than me and lasted 25 years longer than their marriage.
I house sit for an 80+ lady. She has one of these in her kitchen. Still works. Bulletproof. It is now 2025....so that's...37 years running, no problems.

What's the most expensive item you've bought with the intention of keeping it for life?
Probably the Sharp 5-CD hi-fi system or Zojirushi water heater.

What's the oldest appliance you own?
I have my mother’s original Cuisinart by Moulinex from the mid 70s. I use it regularly. I also have her chrome Osterizer 3 speed blender from like 1960, I don’t use it, but it works. And I have a Sharp Half Pint microwave (looks like a blueberry iMac) that’s 25 years old, I use it every day.

Alarm Clock without Snooze
Sharp still has a few options: https://sharpclocks.com/alarm-clocks/ Otherwise, check your local charity shops! I recently picked up a Sony Dream Machine with radio capabilities for $8, and the profit is going directly towards my communities’ most dire needs. You can still order similar models from Casio if you order directly from Japan. Use Google Translate browser extension, assuming you don’t speak Japanese. My 43 years old microwave, hoping to last another 40
I bought a Sharp brand 'Carousel' Microwave from Goodwill for $9 that is apparently roughly 40 years old. There were three there, and I have no idea how or why. Best microwave I've ever used hands-down.

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
Sharp 1500w Microwave. Bought it 20 years ago. The display went out after a few months but I never got around to getting it fixed. Keeps on microwaving and you can’t get consumer models that powerful anymore.

At In Laws This beast of a machine at my wife’s rents house. They say it been here 30+ years.
Ours is just like this, but sharp brand. Got as a wedding gift in 1982. We have a nice new microwave at our lake house, which only reinforces how much we love this old one! We’re doing a full renovation of our kitchen and I swear I’m planning in our old beast of a microwave. It will now be more hidden, but it’s not going anywhere. One of our kids has asked us to leave it to them in our will. I love this thing.
