Any good quality road bike say from Trek, Giant, Specialized, but my favourite will last a lifetime. But tons of others brands. Also given the depreciation of these things you dont need a new one, refurb an older one with good quality parts (Shimano etc) at a bike shop. At the end of the day the core of a bike is a frame nearly everything else can be replaced. Decathlon’s Tribans are a good alternative on a budget.

Shimano is good for that too. They make bicycle components and fishing reels. I guess Japanese companies can’t figure out what they want to specialize in.

Exactly. One-to-one at the same price delta, Shimano is generally top of the heap. Same with their fishing gear. That said, I always recommend people go up in group set quality because, imo, better group sets always pay for themselves in reliability, serviceability, and longevity.

Nikon, Paul Stuart, American Giant, Look, Shimano, All-clad, and Mauviel are brands I always trust as compared to anything else with which each brand competes (yes, I know they overlap with one another).

BIFL & new hobbies?
This exactly, in most hobbies it's usually best to get the minimum possible for the task (cheapest/used/the fewest tools/etc) and upgrade only when you can articulate why you need the bigger/better/nicer thing I've caught a lot of fish on a zebco reel/ugly stick combo, but a nice Shimano on a St. Croix rod is a significantly nicer experience.
