Need a lightweight speaker that fits in a backpack (not bulky)
Headphones, like Shokz. They're only a couple ounces, take up almost no space, and most importantly, you can hear the music and the outside and others don't have to hear your speakers. My shokz usually last 3 or 4 years, with 10 hours/day, 5 days a week of use. They're not BIFL by the strictest definition, but they honor their warranties like champs.

I have a set of the Shokz open swim (3?). Tbh I ordered the wrong ones, but it was a happy accident. Taken them swimming, hiking in rain, even wear them in the shower occasionally (please don’t judge) and they’re working great. Had them about a year and a half and still going strong.

Looking for BIFL underwater bone conducting headsets
The weak spot on these isn’t the bone conduction gimmick, it’s water getting in and the battery cooking itself after enough cycles. If you can see any seams around the electronics, it’s on borrowed time. Fully potted guts survive, everything else eventually corrodes. IPX8 on a box means nothing unless they actually state depth and duration. If they won’t list meters, assume it’s marketing nonsense. Open USB ports are a joke for swimmers. Even with a flap, they leak. Go for magnetic docks with physical contacts, they hold up longer. The transducers do better when they’re sitting in silicone instead of hard plastic. Pressure changes crack the stiff shells. Shokz OpenSwim and the Zygo Solo get closer to a real seal. They’re not BIFL, but they last way longer than the Amazon lottery. And skip anything with cute touch controls. Those membranes die long before the audio parts do.

I'm going to suggest that you go with some Shockz OpenRun Pros. They blow every ear bud away. If you're slightly ADHD they can be used at low volume and you can still hear everything around you helping you focus with music but staying in the conversation as they work on bone conduction. You can also use them walking around the city and still hear people coming up behind. They're incredible on planes too. You can wear soft ear plugs and still hear music or white noise. But also can lean to the side and not have ear bud crushing into your head.

Headphones for sensitive friend
I second the bone conduction headphones. Though I think Aftershokz rebranded to Shokz. I like their traditional model called Openrun. But if they're mainly going to be using it at their computer for voice chat, I'd recommend the Opencomm model. Both models offer an open ear design where nothing actually is in the ear canal. As someone who hates earbuds, I can wear these all day with zero discomfort. So much so I can forget that I have them on sometimes.

If you're okay with over-ears I love my Shokz OpenFit 2 pair, I wear them for 10-12 hours a day, I forget they're even in my ears, and only need to charge the case like every 5 days. They were about $180 when I got them

Buy shokz. Bone duction headset or whatever it's called, I think I spent $165 I work in loud manufacturing facilities as a contractor, so dirty environments. They don't cover the ear so facilities with ear covers/ headphone rules allow them & I can hear while wearing earplugs. Honestly, I keep ear plugs in the car so I can hear better with the windows down. Want to listen to an audio book while doing any of the following: using my chainsaw - no problem wood splitter - no problem Operating a skid steer? - no problem Mowing - yep Kids being kids & you need to hear them but still want to listen to your audio book? - yep At the airport & still need to hear the announcements - no issue I even bought a pair for my wife & she jumped in the pool.. they still work.

I have the Shokz mini, I use everyday for 10+ hours and even sleep with them sometimes for a year now. They charge quick and last forever. If you don’t need hearing protection, they are great. Sometimes, they are annoying to connect if you walk in and out of range too many times. But I would definitely buy again if I ever lost them.

If you're using in ears as pseudo hearing protection you'd be far and away better with bone conduction and actual hearing protection. My Shokz Openswims have survived over 3 years of daily 12-16 hour use plus swimming almost every day in both pools and the ocean. Battery still maintains 12+ hour run time and I can actually protect my hearing at work.

I used to have issues with wind noise when biking so bad I would get earaches, so I got a pair of wind deflectors (the original brand name is Cat Ears, but there’s a few now), and it’s incredible the reduction in noise. Makes it really easy to listen to music with my shokz when biking.

Shockz work great for when you need to also hear outside. I use them for cycling, and at work. But long term, every pair I've owned craps out after a year or two, and they are not repairable. When my current pair dies, I'll probably try one of the cheap knockoffs on Amazon.

I apparently have the shokz model s803. I'm not sure what the branding model on them is but that's what the little label on the inside says. They were like $75 on sale at Costco. My only complaint is the proprietary charger means I never move the charger bc I don't want to have to buy a new one. But the life is long enough on them that that's ok, and if they do go low when I want to say so some chores, 10 minutes charging is enough to use them for quite a while.

Here are the ones I’ve tried. Shokz- great headphones. It sits next to your ear rather than over. Forever tethered and that can get annoying, especially if you’re wearing a high collared shirt. Shokz now has a non tethered version - I always see them returned at REI so do with that information what you will. Beats headphones - the ones that have an arm that go around your ear. I put the clip over my ear then let it dangle in front of my canal. If I want total block of ambient, I put them in like they’re intended. Three different soundcore - all very affordable especially if you get them refurbished on eBay. All controllable sound quality and controls through their app. Super super long battery life. I think I’m a soundcore person now, the ROI is just much higher with these considering their price, the way I use them, and my perceived sound quality. 1. Soundcore c30i (there are upgraded versions of it) - I really liked these they rest on the flappy part of your ear and project the sound towards the ear canal. Great sound and control. less than $50 cheap. 2. Soundcore v30i. Love these, they’re the older model but I like these because they adjust on the arm itself so you can make it more or less ambient to outside sound. Sits on top of the ear. Also less than $50 if you get them refurbished. I use these at home. 3. Soundcore Aerofit pro. I use these for work - people say I sounds great on calls and don’t hear my coworkers (I work in pretty busy and noisy office. Great sound - dare I say too great, I get overwhelmed sometimes. It sits on top of the canal so you can hear if you need to (not adjustable). These ran closer to $100 - even refurbished. They come with a strap if you want to tether them. The battery life on these are crazy - I charge once a week and I’m on those all day 5 days a week between calls and music.

The open dots shokz are earbud style but still open. I have a pair! They sound awesome. They don’t block ANY outside noise so I found them challenging to use while hiking because the wind was so loud o couldn’t hear my podcasts or music. They’re great for running especially in a more quiet neighborhood or wooded area where you really do want to hear everything to be safe. Battery life is good. They connect easily, they feel like nothing on your ears.

I really like my bone conducting headphone. Shokz makes very good ones, they wrap around the back of your head and rest below your temples in front of your ears. I use these all the time when I need to hear my surroundings but would like to listen to music, etc. Great for when I'm riding my bike.

I love my shokz. The benefit and the drawback is that they don't block out other sound. This is a benefit for my wife who likes to be able to get my attention while I'm doing chores with headphones on, and I generally don't mind it, but it was a major drawback the first time I got on a plane after I started using them and realized "doh, I really needed to bring earbuds for this."

Shokz, they are connected together and use bone conduction instead of having them in your ears. I prefer them for the fact that I have small ear holes and any buds bug me after a few minutes. The bonus for me is zero noise cancelling so I can use them on a construction site. I’ve got the basic model, my wife has two sets, even with my big head her “mini” fits me and they’re more comfortable as they’re rounded over your ears. My next set will have the rounded ear part as opposed to the flat. They’re still not bad for wearing all day, even with a hard hat and glasses.

Shokz customer service is fabulous. The actual device might not quite be BIFL, but their customer service sets them apart. Shokz has been my main headset for 6 years now. Airpod Pros and high end Bose noise canceling hardly get any use since buying Shokz OpenRun Pro 2. Use Loop earplugs when I need noise reduction.

I love your story! A pair of red Shokz has quietly changed my life too. Headphones are my ADHD cryptonite and I’ve had to replace them every couple of months from losing, washing or breaking them. If you work from home and are fine with open ear. Get a shokz opencomm2. Not s different pair of shokz or the regular opencomm. Must be opencomm2. I've had I don't know how many headsets and none are better. I used to even handle the VoIP so I decided on headset models and have had a ton. Would not buy these for a cube farm since they do not cover your ear and isolate outside noise. Fir that Plantronics are the best. Jabra is meh but work. If you're going with one of these I recommend dect instead of Bluetooth for range and lack of interference. If you need distance shokz will be limited to typical bluetooth distances.

Bone conduction headphones! I only have about 20% hearing in my right ear, so I'm functionally deaf in that ear. Never used to listen to music outside of the car bc wearing headphones would block all sounds from getting to my good ear, and also anything in stereo would give me vertigo. About 8 years ago tried on a pair of Shokz at a kiosk in the mall and I heard music perfectly in my right ear for the first time in decades! They've had Shokz headphones at Costco recently. I think they still do. Don't remember the price, but I'm pretty sure it was less than that. I've had mine for 4 years and love them. I have to say, they're not good for high volume, but I listen to music at a reasonable volume and the spoken word works great. They vibrate your ear at higher volumes.

I have had shokz for a little over a year. I love them but the downsides are 1. The rubber-ish padding on them tears and blocks the ears, 2. The arch on the back of the headphone can be annoying when laying down or if you have long hair. 3. The sound is not as pronounced as earbuds or regular headphones. I wish the arch back was adjustable. Otherwise they’re good bone conducting headphones. I’d love to try the ones on the neck through because of the back arch of them sticks out.

Have you tried OpenFit. Much better sound than the bone conduction, no band wrapping around your head, still really good battery life. I have the original OpenFit and the OpenFit 2 is supposed to be even better. They still have the issue that they are open to outside sounds so loud external noise can overwhelm them. Unlike bone conduction, you cannot plug your ears (which actually improves the sound of bone conduction).

Shokz are the type I use. Get a couple days use out of them before they need to be recharged. Not the best sound, but you can still hear everything around you while wearing them. I was able to wear them hours at a time during my first try. Not the greatest to lay your head on the seat behind you, though. Nap limiting.

I dunno, I've used a lot of earbuds and none are really good to wear for an extended period (2+hrs). My ears just start aching, but maybe it's just me. I've had very good experiences with the Shock (used to be OpenShok) bone conducting headphones, but those aren't probably what you're looking for.

Osprey has never let me down with a bag. I travel a lot for work and their bags have been perfect for both business travel and hiking travel. Shokz - When they finally abandoned MicroUSB for Charging they've never let me down. I have 2 OpenComm2's I rotate for work, and I have OpenRun for fitness, and OpenFit2 for if I am wearing a hat that covers my ears.
