  Simple human has gone to heck, stop recommending them

  I don't know anything about Simple Human in general, tho I'm a big fan of sustainability. We had one of their double trash cans for a few years, and we have toddlers, so it probably got some hard use. When the plastic hinge piece broke, I was disappointed (tbh, I was never a huge fan of the trash can bc its too small), but since it was pricey, I figured I'd take a long shot and see if I could buy a replacement for that part. All that to say, I was happily surprised to learn that 1) you CAN buy a replacement part, and 2) I was able to retroactively register for warranty even without the original receipt and got the replacement for free (bad news: the broken part is out of stock). So, yes, there are grungy parts that are hard to clean, and I wish we had just bought a single can instead of a double in which both sides are too small for my preference, but I'm a fan of any company that offers replacement parts and honors warranties.

  Simplehuman trash can fix

  Hey I found out it’s apparently a common problem, someone posted how they fixed it on YouTube shorts, try searching “simplehuman squeaky pedal fix” you should find the short. Basically, apparently there is a tiny area right in the middle of the bottom part that moves with the panel close to the pedal, the guy sprayed some w40 and it seems to have worked, he posted post application and it’s quiet. Will go get it today and try lol

  Let’s Talk Wirecutter: What Was Worth It and What Wasn’t?

  Simplehuman rectangular step trash can was my reason to start trusting Wirecutter. Such a solid recommendation. I love that thing.  The Brooklinen recommendations were not good for me. The quality is fine, but worse than the cheaper LL Bean ones. Fitted sheet pockets are way too shallow for a pillow top mattress, and the quilted blanket hasn’t held up.

  Is there anything you're convinced is "the cheaper the better"?

  If you also have simplehuman garbage cans, I have used costco trash bags with them. I just size up a little, so it isn't a perfect fit, but it works well. I also buy the simplehuman brand bags on ebay and can find good deals there.

  Check out motion-sensor bins. Simplehuman and Ninestars make solid ones. Battery-powered, hands-free, and lid keeps smells down. Worth it for bedroom use imo 👌

  Simple Human 40L rectangular with the correct Simple Human liners, never had one come loose in 12 years (for full transparency I have fixed the pedal twice but only because it sits under a counter and hits it when opening which places additional stress on the mechanism). Now I’ve replaced the pedal plastic stub shafts with metal bolts it should outlive me.

  They're lasting maybe a couple of years. Maybe. Well that Rubbermaid commercial one is $2k on grainger's website. So between the 2, go for the simple human. But honestly Simple Human is just fine. It's not amazing. It's fine. The reality is that the pedal is a failure point. It will always give out somewhere along that mechanism long before the rest of the can. All metal is better than all plastic for sure. But the need to spend $2k on a trash can is....pardon the pun...rubbish.

  Hands-free soap pump

  I’ve had a simple human touch free dispenser with regular batteries for 7 years, still going. It’s the one with the clear soap dispenser on the back, not the silver cylinder. We bought a rechargeable one shortly after that one and it kicked the bucket years ago.

  Does anyone else feel like it's impossible to buy quality stuff anymore? Seems like every single thing I buy falls apart absurdly fast. I try to get quality stuff, but reviews are all fake, star ratings are bought... how do you avoid buying junk?

  Impulse buys, emergencies, personal experience, and trusted reviewers. I bought a random automatic soap dispenser on Amazon, because a friend had something similar and thought it was cool, and it lasted maybe 9 months,. Then I bought the discontinued Simply Human one, because I used that at some random place, it had better features, and I figured that brand wouldn't put their name on disposable garbage (which I know isn't something you can really count on anymore). Their newer one also looked too much like the random one I first got, so I had an aversion to it. I guess I'll know if I did better this time in another six months or so. On the plus side, Cook's Illustrated reviewed automatic soap dispensers and the one I got was their old recommendation. I like their recommendations, I just didn't expect their would review that kind of product. I think the reason to go for quality, as a company, is either going to count in something niche, or where it's very obvious. Maybe I'm wrong but Oxo and Simply Human have a certain solidness to their products you can't fake, I hope. It's all about the right feel in texture, form, and weight. Clothes are so much more subtle about their quality, at a certain point it's obvious something is cheap, but going upward in quality the improvements can be subtle or unnoticeable if you don't know what to look for. It's easy to tell if something feels good, but that can just as easily pill like crazy the first time it's washed, or last years. What if the a cotton shirt is woven from a specific niche method famous for softness, strength, and flexibility I would probably perceive some nice qualities to it, but have no idea what I'm looking at and figure it's not worth the money when I can get just a shirt for a quarter the price or less. Anyway, I know if I try to analyze something in deep detail I end up just delaying, and I should just go with what ever I think is cool from the start. Maybe my subconscious is smarter than I am about these things. Go read a book by its cover.

  Where to get a laundry basket that lasts?

  The best plastic laundry basket that I have owned came with the LG washer stand. That is so perfectly stows away under the washer is a huge bonus. The most useful fabric style one that I have used is from SimpleHuman.

  Is there a automatic foam soap dispenser that's BIFL?

  My simple human soap dispensers that run on AA batteries are still going strong 5 years later. I’ve used the same rechargeable AAs that while time without issue. My Li-ion rechargeable one died about 3 months after the warranty ran out. I called their customer service dept and they were like lol sucks bro, here’s a 20% off coupon to buy a new one. I have learned that the most environmentally friendly, cost effective option, BIFL in most cases to buy things with replaceable batteries, rather than built in rechargeable ones which die after 2-3 years, bricking your whole device.

  Foot Pedal Actuated Trash Bin

  Except the mechanism isn’t plastic. It’s metal rods connected to a (sturdy) plastic lid that just pops off if you do something stupid like hold the lid down while you stomp on the pedal. I have four kids that abuse these daily. Bought a few of the smplehuman cans in 2017 and added some more in 2019. Zero are broken.

  In a similar vein, several years ago got a $100 SimpleHuman trash can. When it closes the odors actually stay inside.  Recently bought cheap charcoal filters, put one in it and it legit helps odors even when opening it

  Is a dual trash can necessary?

  We live in an apartment so space can be limited. We bought the dual Simplehuman can (trash / recycling) and it’s a real space saver. Also the lid seals well so no smells coming out (again, apartment where rooms are closer together).  I call ours the “Cadillac of trash cans”. It’s a great purchase imo.

  We have one from Amazon. We do use a trash bag in the recycling side just to keep the can itself clean, but we don’t throw it out every time we take out the recycling. We just replace it when it looks gross or tears which is every 2-4 empties. We had just a oner for a long time, but we just let the recycling pile up on the counter instead of taking it directly out. This is a lot more efficient. We have one that has a larger side for trash and a smaller side for recycling, but my mom has one that is the same on each side. When she takes the trash and recycling out, the recycling bin with the dirty bag becomes the trash, and the empty trash bin that no longer has a bag (because it was thrown out with the trash) gets a clean trash bag and becomes the recycling!

  I have the dual simple human trash can. I use a plastic bag in both. The plastic bag in the recycling bin side is “just in case” there’s anything wet or trash accidentally put in there. It usually stays on for a month or longer and then I use it for trash before throwing it out and replacing with a fresh bag.

  This is EXACTLY what we do. We e had ours for years and won't go back to bags other than the simple human because they just don't rip. One side is trash, one side recycle. Our recycle aide had an insert that comes out and you wash out, so you don't need a bag on that side.

  I have a dual trash can from Simple Human, which has a smaller bin meant for recycling and a larger one for garbage. I do the opposite, since recycling is so much bulkier. I put bags as liners (not the ridiculously expensive ones from SH) and put them into the big cans before putting them on the curb. Specifically, the bag with the garbage goes right into the big trash receptacle as is, and I upend the bag with the recyclables into the recycling can, then put the trash bag in the garbage receptacle. This has worked for me over the 10 years I’ve had the Simple Human dual trash can.

  Simplehuman Trash Can 45L

  We have a “butterfly”? (split top) opening one from them that we love, as it fits and works perfectly in the one spot we can put a trash can. I’ve not seen others currently on the market with this type of closure. But, as you say, the soft close broke after ~2 years. I can’t even figure out how it worked, mechanically, so I can’t attempt a ratchet fix.

  The stainless one I have looks very nice, and I like the proprietary magnetic charger works... But it's an unnecessary "one more proprietary charger to lose" And... The sub twenty dollar Chinese one works Just as well. Good to identify "at this stage in my life" because wasting money on a "looks a teeny bit fancier" Is unnecessary :)

  Have the stainless steel touch free rechargeable 9 oz soap dispenser since 2021, in kitchen, used regularly (at least weekly) with no issues. Works great, only use simplehuman dish soap refills. Just needs polishing now and then, the exterior picks up water stains.

  I have the mirror. It worked great for a year, stopped charging, I threw it under the bed, rediscovered it, tried to charge it again, and now it works. I'm sure it was user error, but...it was basically plug it in to charge and boom done for maintenance as I never got it wet. Idk why it stopped working or why it started again

  Their stuff is usually pretty great in my experience. My wife had a makeup mirror that lasted over 10 years. Only reason she gave it away was to get a larger one. The new one is also from SH and it's been excellent. I don't have their trash can, but I use their bags and they are the best garbage liners I've used. If you want a rock solid soap dispenser. I have the OXO stainless steel one and it's brilliant. Doesn't have "no-touch" sensor, though. May be a deal breaker for you.

  I actually love our simple human trash cans and soap dispensers. when the trash can broke recently I emailed customer service and they helped me figure out the problem and fix it myself (just a screw fell out)!
